Billed as a gender-swapped Lost Boys, or The Lost Boys meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, In Nightfall was published by Penguin Random House/Delacorte Press in March 2023, going viral on X and being springboarded into the publishing zeitgeist when no one showed up to the author’s book launch in Tempe, Arizona.

The film considered too shocking for the world! Written, edited, produced and directed by Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi of Mondo Cane fame, this epic recreation of the American slave trade atrocities was both condemned as depraved exploitation and acclaimed as an unprecedented cry of Black anguish and rage. The Detroit Chronicle hailed it as “a graphic, moving, nerve-paralyzing film.” Legendary film critic Pauline Kael called it “the most specific and rabid incitement of the race war.” It became one of the most reviled and misunderstood films of its time. Five decades cannot diminish Goodbye Uncle Tom’s impact or quiet its controversy as it has become even more relevant today!
Goodbye Uncle Tom is available on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray and Digital on April 23.

Blur took the stage at Coachella on Saturday, and to close out their portion of the night, they brought out performers from the Torres Martinez Cahuilla Bird Singers.
It was Blur’s first time at Coachella since 2013 (though Damon Albarn has made a few surprise appearances in recent years), and the band delivered renditions of some of their most beloved songs, like “Song 2,” “Girls & Boys,” “Beetlebum,” and more.
The Britpop legends first brought out a group of Bird Singers to perform a traditional piece titled “Bird Song,” honoring the culture and history of the indigenous tribes of the Coachella region. From there, the Bird Singers loaned their voices to Blur’s “Death of a Party,” and then returned at the end of the night to close out the set with “Tender.”
Elsewhere in Blur’s set, Albarn made an appeal for mutual understanding in a time of political polarization,...

Another standout of this approach is definitely “Goodbye South, Goodbye” a film, however that was the last of the Taiwanese auteur that was not successful.

It’s a good time to be a Sofia Coppola fan. Alongside last fall’s release of one of her finest films, Priscilla, we got an expansive book detailing her career. Now we have two new updates related to other peaks of the director’s career.
First up, a New Yorker profile has revealed that a documentary on the making of her 2006 feature Marie Antoinette is in the works. Sofia Coppola’s mother Eleanor Coppola shot behind-the-scenes footage from the production, as she did for her husband Francis Ford Coppola’s films, most notably resulting in the documentary feature Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse. For Marie Antoinette, she captured around 80 hours, and both mother and daughter are now in the editing process. Here’s hoping it arrives by the film’s 20th anniversary.

There have been plenty of films set in the classroom over the years, from Goodbye, Mr Chips to The Dead Poets Society, not to mention female-led films such as Mona Lisa Smile or Dangerous Minds. In all the above, the teacher is the hero of the piece. In German director Ilker Çatak’s The Teachers’ Lounge, however, the teacher is far from being a hero, despite her good and honourable intentions.
The film opens with the camera following maths teacher Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch) as she strides purposefully into school and makes her way to the teachers’ lounge before heading to class. Before the film has even got going or a line has been spoken, Çatak alerts his audience to the fact that this film is no School of Rock. Thanks to Marvin Miller’s truly disturbing score, the tone is set for a psychological thriller that will set the nerves on edge.

It's easy to forget that "M*A*S*H" was actually a period piece. The acclaimed sitcom was filmed in the '70s and borrowed liberally from compassionate discussions surrounding the Vietnam War, but it took place two decades earlier, in 1950s Korea. Despite anachronistic '70s mustaches, a timeline that reimagined the relatively short Korean War as near-endless, and the occasional not-retro-enough prop, the show still worked hard to bring a fairly accurate vision of the 1950s to life.
Sometimes, that meant referencing movies that were made in the 1930s and '40s, like "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Good Earth." In other instances, though, the series got ahead of itself, name-dropping movies that hadn't been released yet. The show's masterpiece series finale, the feature-length concluding story "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen," apparently almost included a reference that straddled the line between anachronism and timeliness. According to The Hollywood Reporter's 35th-anniversary spotlight on the finale,...

To make a film critical of oneself and the values instilled in you by family and society is not an easy task. But that’s exactly what Mohamed Kordofani set out to do with Goodbye Julia. “I wanted this to be a mirror for Sudanese people. I think we, as a community, care too much about how people view us but we don’t care at all about what the people we oppress think.”
The film–screening for free this Tuesday, December 12 as part of Film Independent Presents!–tackles the macro issues of racism, colorism and prejudice within Sudan while concentrating on the growing friendship between two women in Khartoum. The first Mona (Eiman Yousef) is a privileged Sudanese housewife of Arab descent. The other, Julia (Siran Riak), is a poor woman originally from South Sudan and of African descent who ends up being her maid.

In a notable prestige project package from Chile, Gonzalo Maza, co-writer of Sebastian Lelio’s Academy Award-winning “A Fantastic Woman,” has boarded “I Don’t Know How to Say Goodbye,” a drama thriller non-fiction series to be directed by Carola Fuentes and produced by Rafael Valdeavellano, re-teaming after their collaboration as co-writers and directors on the admired “Chicago Boys,” (2015) and “Breaking the Brick” (2022).
Both doc features were nuanced studies of the impact of Chicago school of Neoliberal thought on standard economic policy in Augusto Pinochet’s Chile. “Goodbye” turns on another often deleterious mindset, the highly codified and often cruel power dynamics seen in the online representation of fellow high school students.
Set up at the partners’ La Ventana Cine in Santiago de Chile, “I Don’t Want to Say Goodbye,” now in development, is executive produced by director Marcela Said, who has helmed episodes of “Gangs of London,” (2022), “Lupin...

Lee “Scratch” Perry’s final album, King Perry, will be released posthumously on February 2nd, 2024 via False Idols. As a preview, the lead single “100lbs of Summer” featuring Greentea Peng arrived today, along with a remix of the track by Tricky.
King Perry was written, produced, and recorded by an 85-year-old Perry in the months before his death in 2021, and was the final product of the reggae icon’s decade-long collaboration with UK-based producer, Daniel Boyle. Aiming to expand the framework of dub to incorporate new sounds and experimentations, the two musicians began the project by sending files back and forth from opposite sides of the Atlantic. Over time, it blossomed into a full-length celebration of Perry’s style, featuring collaborations from Greentea Peng, Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder, Fifi Rong, and more.

Summer is long gone and it’s time to look beyond the blockbuster. Our latest study of recent books about or related to the world of filmmaking is full of artistic titans––Sofia Coppola, Whit Stillman, Clint Eastwood, Christian Petzold, Kore-eda Hirokazu, Wes Anderson. This column also boasts a lengthy rundown of noteworthy novels, many of which will surely be brought to large and small screens in years to come.
Archive by Sofia Coppola (MacK)
In recent years this column has covered several books focused on the iconic, inimitable Sofia Coppola, including a hardcover career overview and interview collection. Archive is constructed from the personal collection of the writer-director of The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette herself. And as one would expect from a filmmaker known for her sense of style, fashion, and design, the result is positively gorgeous. It is packed with photos, ephemera, collages, and text––nearly 500 pages’ worth.

The popularity of "M*A*S*H" is well-documented: Its record-setting finale telecast, which captivated 125 million people in total, is cited in media studies lessons, bar trivia games, and world record books alike. But when we talk about how "M*A*S*H" went out on a high note with the most-watched non-Super Bowl telecast of all time, we don't often talk about what those viewership numbers make clear: The show ended while plenty of fans were still clamoring for more.
"M*A*S*H" ran for 11 seasons before bowing out with the feature-length finale, "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen." But unlike most shows that fizzle out after a long run or are canceled after a short one, "M*A*S*H" didn't have trouble getting audiences' attention. According to classic TV ratings databases, nine of the show's seasons were among the top 10 most-watched shows on TV, and millions of fans tuned in regularly even before its big finish. By all indications, the...

Sudan has submitted Mohamed Kordofani’s Khartoum-set drama Goodbye Julia for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.
The film made history in Cannes this year as the first Sudanese film to play in the festival after it was selected for Un Certain Regard.
Its premiere took place just weeks after fighting broke out in Khartoum due to a clash between rival generals, which has led to the deaths of 5,000 people and uprooted seven million people.
Since Cannes, the film has also played at Karlovy Vary in its Horizons section and will make its Mena premiere at Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival in October ahead of a theatrical release in the country on October 25. It has also been selected for the BFI London Film Festival.
The selection was made by the Sudanese National Committee which is operating in exile.

Goodbye Julia, the first-ever Sudanese feature to screen at the Cannes Film Festival, has been selected by Sudan to be its second-ever Academy Awards submission for best international feature film.
Earlier this year, the film, directed by Mohamed Kordofani, also won the Un Certain Regard’s freedom prize at Cannes.
Set just before the secession of South Sudan in 2011, Goodbye Julia follows Mona (Eiman Yousif), a well-off woman from the north, who seeks redemption after her husband shoots and kills a southern man. While in distraught, she hires the man’s wife Julia (Siran Riak) as her maid. The film depicts the complicated relationship and differences between Northern and Southern Sudanese communities.
Kordofani previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the film is “about the transformation of someone who realizes that they have been unknowingly racist and want to overcome this racism. A transformation of someone who first abides by social norms and traditions,...

Kelly Clarkson enlisted her daughter River Rose for a special familial collaboration, “You Don’t Make Me Cry,” from the new deluxe edition of Clarkson’s latest album, Chemistry, out today, Sept. 22.
River opens the track with a heavily auto-tuned vocal run, giving the song an early-2010s pop vibe that continues with snappy, atmospheric production laced with piano. Like many of the songs on Chemistry, “You Don’t Make Me Cry” finds Clarkson holding nothing back, as she sings on the chorus, “And you don’t make me cry...

The Chemical Brothers have unveiled their 10th studio album, For That Beautiful Feeling. Stream it via Apple Music or Spotify below.
Recorded at their own studio, For That Beautiful Feeling is The Chemical Brothers’ shot at bottling up “that wild moment when sound overwhelms you and almost pulls you under yet ultimately lets you ride its wave, to destinations unknown.” In simpler words: It’s all about losing yourself in the music, in this case by way of delightful chaos and spellbindingly psychedelic instrumentals. Pick up your physical copy here.
The record includes contributions from Beck on the recent single, “Skipping Like a Stone,” as well as French psych-pop singer Halo Maud. The latter sings on “Live Again,” which arrived with a music video alongside the album announcement in July.

If getting (mostly) on the other side of a pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that the looming specter of mass death really has a way of realigning your priorities. That mood hits especially different in the world of Montreal-based developer KO_OP’s Goodbye Volcano High, a game which posits that prehistoric life on Pangaea was a very modern, 21st-century kind of situation. Prehistoric high school in particular is a perennial genderqueer maze of entanglements, crushes, awkwardness, puberty, half-formed ambitions, and parental expectations that just so happen to be populated by anthropomorphic, animated dinosaurs.
In the middle of it all is Fang, a burgeoning musician who spent their summer vacation undergoing a full-blown mood change, from a very femme pop-punk to a moody, sardonic enby who keeps being deadnamed in the notes left on the fridge by their ever-absent parents. With their friends scattered to the four winds for the summer,...
