Well, at least they tried...
paul_haakonsen25 June 2022
Right, well the cover/poster for the 2022 horror movie "Revealer" was interesting, especially given the 1980s vibe and the tentacles in the background. And being an avid horror fan and a Lovecraft fan, of course I opted to watch "Revealer", despite of never having heard about it prior to watching it.

I wasn't sure what I was in for here, from writers Luke Boyce, Michael Moreci and Tim Seeley, but I do believe in giving a movie a fair chance. And since "Revealer" was a horror movie, then I was already interesting in watching it.

The storyline told in "Revealer" was a bit too far out there for my liking. I mean, the end of days apparently takes place in the 1980s, and all we get to see, essentially, is the insides of a sleazy strip club. But wait, it gets better, then suddenly the demon Asmodeus shows up. Right.

Well, it might have worked if anything interesting actually took place during the slow paced progress of the narrative. But it didn't, and that means that you are stuck with a somewhat dull and monotonous storyline that takes forever to get nowhere and tells nothing worthwhile while doing that. Not really the recipe for a top of the line narrative.

The acting performances in "Revealer" were actually fair enough, despite of the cast ensemble being very small, and the actresses and actors virtually had next to nothing to work with. So at least that counted for something.

Visually then "Revealer" was okay, I guess. If you look aside from the inarticulate rubber mask that they used for Asmodeus.

All in all, then "Revealer" is not a fabulous horror movie, nor is it actually particularly scary or entertaining. If you enjoy horror movies, then I suggest you get your kicks elsewhere, like "Stranger Things" for example, as "Revealer" seems to be somewhat influenced by that series.

My rating of director Luke Boyce's "Revealer" lands on a three out of ten stars.

Not revealing

Warning: Spoilers
The formula is simple; sassy stripper and uptight religious nut get trapped together in a crisis and have to figure out how to work together to escape.

I'm not sure if this should be billed as a horror-comedy or not. The premise and situations and dialogue certainly make it seem like that's what they were going for. The problem is, it wasn't very funny. Maybe they shoulda switched the leads so the religious chick was the sassy one. Or just make them both sassy, with humorous banter and quips. Alas, we didn't get that here.

The first act in the peep show kinda drags, with really only one or two exciting moments. So its lite on action too.

In the second act in the tunnels we learn a little more about our characters. +1 to drama.

When we get around to the finale, our villain is a demon.. or alien.. or evil god.. its not clear. But apparently can be killed with conventional weapons like a crowbar, so... not that powerful..? Threat-level = 2

There's a twist in the end, that i didn't quite get. There's a bunch of people in similar tunnel-mazes as our heroines, in a network of mazes that stretches as far as you can see. So did they escape? Did they get out only to find themselves trapped again? Who knows? Who cares, really? Not me, not so much.

5/10 could've been worse, but wouldn't watch again.

Also, the stripper 'reveals' that she is raising her nephew since his parents are deadbeats. She claims he's 12, but when we hear his voice he sounds 5 or 6. Annoying.

Also also, for a movie titled "Revealer" that features a stripper as the lead, there's nothing 'revealing' about this one. Not.one.single.boobie. Thumbs down 👎🏻

Judgment day theme is not my favorite type of movie. Especially when it's on a budget and having no serious plot twist. The horror is kinda boring. The scares are only effective against 5 year olds. And the ending didn't give the audience any closure they deserve. The only good thing we can get from this movie is just the moral lesson. Which we can get from any other sources without having to go through the boredom.

You will squint for days after watching

I know it's a low budget horror film and the rules are that you don't turn the lights because you will see the shonky effects. But, this is way too much.

Predictable stereotypes make it play out as you would expect.

A dull Stranger Things inspired bore-fest
MG_8423 June 2022
The basis for the film is fairly straightforward. A condescending religious protester and the arrogant peep show performer she dislikes have to work together to escape an apocalyptic invasion by alien creatures.

Neither of the characters are particularly likeable, nor are their characters developed particularly well. The amble their way through the peep show store in an attempt to escape the demonic mega creature that wants to kill them.

Ultimately, nothing interesting happens, the dialog is uninspired and the film as a whole feels incredibly dull. It was clearly trying to ride the Stranger Things wave, with its 80s setting, music, and creatures, but it creates none of the likeable characters and character interactions, you see in the latter, and its horror elements are no match.

Throw in an unnecessary "religious girl who is secretly a lesbian" character arc (because that ticks one of the "popular things to add" boxes), but adds nothing to the overall film; along with a deliberately phallic looking attack on the peep show dancer, and that's about as much excitement as you'll get out of this one.

Not one I'd recommend watching, and certainly not one that will get a rewatch.

A netflix original perhaps?

Warning: Spoilers
The moment I saw the protesters and the premise was clear I realized this was going to be anything but a horror movie.

This was a piece of crap is what it was.

Instead of a well written horror movie about the end, it was mostly focused on the fact that this religious girl was indeed a sinner herself and moreover, she was a lesbian who hid behind her religion and felt shame and judged herself...

I don't even know why I didn't get up and punched myself in the gut for continuing to watch this...

I sincerely hope that, after this, the 'writers' and the 'actors' have already secured their jobs at McDonalds. That's all I have to say about this piece of trash.

Well handled exploitation movie.
Mozjoukine20 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
In 1989, the protestors outside The Revealers Bookstore & peep shows harass booth girl Caito Aase on her way in for a day performing for coin in the slot customers.

Manager Bishop Stevens still hasn't fixed the door. However this happens to be the day of the Apocalypse and Aase finds herself locked in the building with Shaina Schrooten, the protestor girl she exchanges insults with as she arrives, and menaced by yukky unclean (digital) spirits.

The two characters are given motivation. As she gets more covered in dirt and gore, Schrooten resents the humiliations being piled on her. "All my life I've lived as if he was watching." Their growing together is quite involving. Staging of the scary journey is passing convincing and till an ending which is a bit of a let down.

As exploitation fringe film making goes, this one shows quite a bit of skill. It's not hard to imagine those involved doing something more substantial.

This was painful to watch.

I give them credit for making a movie.

It's more than I've done.

Go in expecting Manos the Hand of Fate and you should get a more enjoyable experience.

Sometimes you just need some fun.
TipToeThroughHell26 June 2022
Really fun 80s set buddy movie (a stripper and a religious fanatic) with a dose of apocalyptic horror and two great leads. The two main actresses completely make the movie with their campy, but believable personalities and killer chemistry.

The Movie The World Needs!
thebhopodcast23 June 2022
A story of 2 opposites - 1 just trying to get by and another who judges and lies to themselves to appease God. This movie Pushes Boundaries that aren't in many films and frankly are too afraid to touch. It's a story about how we all need to loosen up, live life and respect each other, regardless of our beliefs and views on life and the world.

This is my favorite movie of the year (so far) and I don't think anything will nudge it out. I hope for those who watch this can pull something from this to improve how they interact and talk to others. We are all different and when times are rough, we need to have each other and not isolate and judge just to feel better about ourselves.

Revealer is a movie we all need in our lives! - Dustin from TheBarrensHideout_Podcast.

Last dance!
BandSAboutMovies21 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
By all rights, Angie (Caito Aase) and Sally (Shaina Schrooten) should never be friends. Angie dances as Precious at the peep show booth of The Revealers Bookstore, Sally is a religious zealot that yell at her nearly every day and their lives couldn't be more different. But maybe they aren't. Maybe they have more in common than they think. It only takes the end of all there is for them to realize that.

Using one location - which was demanded by the COVID-19 outbreak - to its best advantage, the film separates the two leads via the peep show booth as they work together to try and escape the store, then attempt to see what's left of the world. I mean, the horns of the angels have been blasting non-stop, so one imagines that Chicago is an inferno by this point.

Directed by Luke Boyce (The Pooka and the upcoming adaption of the comic book Revival) and written by Michael Moreci and Tim Seeley (who created the aforementioned Revival with artist Mike Norton, colorist Mark Englert and cover artist Jenny Frison as well as Hack/Slash, which is about horror movie survivor Cassie Hack and her mission to destroy slashers; it's even better than it sounds and is required reading), Revealer is a dark movie with a light heart, awash in neon color, dirt and blood. It's not a big movie but that's because it stays small in the face of the biggest thing that ever will be. And it's a blast.

Interesting 80s vibe
pixikinz3 July 2022
Funnily enough, the end credits are almost better than the whole rest of the movie.

Other than that, pretty predictable plots points, special effects are good though.

A disappointing addition to the horror genre that missed an opportunity to be good
kevin_robbins2 August 2023
Revealer (2022) is a movie currently available on Shudder. The storyline follows a stripper and a Bible pusher who have known eachother since high school and can't stand one another. They harass each other every time they see each other. One inauspicious day while the stripper is working an outbreak of sorts occurs and the infected start killing people causing the Bible pusher to run into the strip club for safety. Now the stripper and religious fanatic will need to work together if they hope to survive.

This movie is directed by Luke Boyce, in his directorial debut, and stars Caito Aase (Black Mold), Bishop Stevens (Girl on the Third Floor), Buzz Leer (Silent as the Grave) and Shaina Schrooten (Scare Package II).

This movie actually had some potential with interesting characters, dynamics, settings and an outbreak that reminded me of Slither or the Faculty. Unfortunately, the entire movie focuses on the characters going back and forth and less on the horror elements. The horror elements, when there are any, are actually pretty good. The tongue sequences and floor slithers scenes did have redeeming elements. We just didn't get enough of them. The ending is a bit cliche and too predictable.

Overall, this is a disappointing addition to the horror genre that missed an opportunity to be good. I would score this a 3.5-4/10 and recommend skipping it.

It's Like It Was Meant To Be Cheesy- with too much cheese!
tiskec22 September 2022
I thought finally, a movie with the biblical end times! Couldn't wait to see it. Well, let's just say, "well then..."

I think it was meant to be a cheesy movie, but it was too much cheese with an awful mixture of lame. The setting is really cliche - a stripper in a peep show house.

I do give the film credit for giving a little bit of emotional background to the two main female characters. However, that seems to be the only effort put into the story. I'm not sure if this was done on purpose or not. It is fun though.

The main characters come off as annoying as hell. Other than having them reveal a little background, I wanted to tear my hair out while listening to them argue with each other most of the time.

Finally, the demon aesthetics were terrible.

Belying its title...
MrGKB3 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
...and its premise by spending more time telling rather than showing, and ultimately revealing next to nothing of great import or interest, this Covid-era effort feels like it spawned from the shadows of higher-budget releases like Seth Rogen's "This is the End." Its script isn't as clever, though, and that's a fairly low bar, to be honest. The two relatively unknown leads acquit themselves pretty well despite said script's weaknesses; I was impressed that the peep show worker didn't sport a stereotypical toned and sculpted body and that her closeted antagonist was equally nondescript, despite sporting a rack that cried out for attention. Adolescent sexism to the side, casting was one of the strongest aspects of this production, with a special shout-out for casting a very likeable Bishop Stevens. It's a shame the story chose to shy away from the true horror of the situation. Oddly enough, at times I wondered if "Revealer"had originated as a stage play, though that may have been the effect of the "tunnel" walls that the ladies spent too much time in. It just felt...tame.

Don't Judge me!
Max_Lucas27 June 2022
The movie screams to the 80's low budget horror fans and no one else. And that's ok. The best part for me, the ending, during the credits. Not the credits. But what's played during them. You know. The part no one ever watches.

Loved it! Rooted for the Female Leads
jjenk9117 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It looked interesting to me when I saw the cover art of the movie and read the synopsis. I was not expecting a grandiose horror movie; rather, it's a pretty good movie with two leads I rooted for to get out of their hellscape. At first, I didn't like the lead of Sally Mewbourne, but when she revealed that she was a lesbian, I understood her plight. Being a part of an ultra-conservative, religious family, being gay was very taboo during the '80s.

I give this a recommendation if you're into late '80s nostalgic horror movies, with some charm and heart. Hopefully, Angie took Sally out for tacos, but the ending... doesn't translate as such. Who wants tacos from Hell?

An enjoyable enough if still somewhat flawed effort
kannibalcorpsegrinder12 July 2022
Getting annoyed by the constant criticism, a stripper at a local club trying to dodge the constant religious protests against the club finds herself stuck with one of the protestors when a religious apocalypse starts leaving them to put their differences aside to escape the situation.

Overall, this one was pretty decent enough when it really tried to. The main factor to be had with this one is the highly enjoyable and fun setup involving the series of contrasts that exists throughout here. This one spends so much time informing us of the differences between the two of them, with the carefree and rebellious stripper in charge of herself while the self-righteous and uptight religious zealot leading the protests against her coming across as the perfectly diametrically-opposed opposites that can be stuck in a situation like this. The series of religious taunting and morality-based accusations against each other that make up the majority of the conversations throughout here which become all the more likable as time goes on and they find themselves stuck together. That leads to the actually fun series of encounters and confrontations that emerge once the two are forced together. This not only manages to tie together the non-horror scenes where they try to break her out of the booth that she got stuck in while the whole cataclysm started while still fighting each other for their beliefs, but the later scenes involving them trying to battle back against the creatures spawned to kill them. With several impressive scenes in the underground tunnels while they try to make their way to safety offering some rather likable sequences, this one manages to get some fine genre elements in play while utilizing the concept of the impending religious apocalypse to offer up plenty of fun elements that hold it up overall. There aren't a lot of flaws here but it does have some issues. The main detriment to be had here is the overlong set up in the first half that focuses on the two trying to get their differences out that comes off as utterly bland and dull. The constant arguments and put-downs that the two of them spout off to each other signal that this one will be going through the same motions regarding their fight for the entire segment. It's not that appealing or creative to have the two go through the same arguments numerous times over, especially with the second half going through a redemption arc for the one character to make her change her ways that turn everything into a rather familiar sense of religious persecution. Hardly any of this comes off as thoughtful in regards to how it all pays off with the apocalypse taking place which just undoes a lot of the positives and ends up knocking this down overall.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language and Graphic Violence.

Not bad, not great either..
arrmeen9 July 2022
Saw this one on Shudder, this is a hard movie to rate. Because, it swings between some good stuff and mediocre at times. Casting and performances are good from the two leading female actors, but the script seems boring at times, some decent dialogues and screenplay is fine but nothing much in terms of horror or thrill. CGI looks okayish at times, but the main creature was disappointing, kinda clumsy and childish looking.

An average watch on a lazy afternoon. Although I would say the ratings and some hard comments here on IMDB don't necessarily say the truth.

Low Budget 80's Goodness
rytmany3 October 2022
It's pretty simple. You've got a good cast, fun story, 80's setting, and all the neon lights you could ever want. This has lovecraftian vibes, but it really hinges on the back and forth between the two leads. Caito and Shaina have wonderful chemistry in the film. You're not going to see tons of kills or gore because this is more of a character study between the two. The comedy worked, the horror elements popped, and a lot of care went into the making of this film. I would highly recommend this film to others. There's also a one off comic book tie in, which the nerd in me just loves. PS. We need more queer horror. Indie horror is really thriving this year.
