The Match Factory has picked up international rights to Anup Singh’s third film, The Song Of Scorpions, which will receive its world premiere in a Piazza Grande screening at the upcoming Locarno film festival.
Starring Golshifteh Farahani and Irrfan Khan, the film follows a carefree, independent tribal woman who is learning the ancient art of healing from her grandmother, a revered scorpion-singer.
A camel trader in the Rajasthan desert hears her sing and falls in love, but before they get to know each other, she is poisoned by a treachery that sets her on a perilous journey to avenge herself and find her song.

Luc Besson's EuropaCorp has entered exclusive negotiations with France's largest exhibitor, Cinémas Gaumont-Pathé, to sell off its multiplex business. Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the rights to Paul Verhoeven‘s new drama “Elle,” the studio announced Wednesday. The film was written by David Birke based on Phillipe Djian’s novel “Oh…” It will screen in competition at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Isabelle Huppert, Laurent Lafitte, Charles Berling, Virginie Efira and Anne Consigny. It is produced by Saïd Ben Saïd of Sbs Productions and Michel Merkt, and co-produced by France 2 Cinémas. Sbs International is handling sales. Early in the market, in one of the first major deals for a competition title, Sony Pictures Classics has swooped to acquire Paul Verhoeven’s Elle.
Spc has taken rights for North America, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe (excluding Russia) and Asia (excluding China and Japan) to the film.
Elle screens late in the festival but which is already generating considerable buzz and controversy, both for its rape scene and for a performance by Isabelle Huppert that is said to be remarkable.

The Kering Foundation, in partnership with the Cannes Film Festival, created ‘Women in Motion’ as a five-year initiative to advocate women’s rights and fair representation of their perspectives and stories in the film industry. Kering is a luxury goods company, originally called Ppr when founded in 1963 by French billionaire François Pinault. Now run by his son François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and CEO, it has recently changed its name to Kering to signify the profound change in the strategy of the group. Its two segments include Luxury and Sporting Groups. Think of the luxury offered by Balenciaga, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Bottega Veneto, Boucheron, Brioni among others in this group and Sport & Lifestyle which includes Puma, Volcom and others.
When Thierry Fremaux of Cannes introduced the Cannes Film Festival line-up this year at the official press conference, he also introduced Kering as a Cannes Partner and in doing so unleashed accusations of commercial opportunism Never before has Cannes linked its festival films in the press conference with commercial sponsorship.
When Kering made the announcement that they would work with Cannes, critics closest to them, that is, the French press particularly, accused Kering of being opportunistic in taking up the banner of women, their rights, stopping the violence against women, as if jumping on the band wagon of a cause for reasons other than those of altruism was not legitimate for a commercial entity.
Thierry Fremaux is also the constant target of criticism on the woman front and has stated (erroneously) that only during Cannes does the subject of the paucity of women directors and in the industry at large make headlines. In fact, women have been weighing the imbalance of women in this public form of entertainment for the past five years and at every key event they have been making public statements and holding meetings about the disproportion of women to men in a concerted effort to bring continued momentum to the movement toward equal representation.
Furthermore and for the record, Kering has expressed its strategic shift to a new sort of advocacy away from outright branding to showing its interest in events of value to society in other ways beyond this important event in Cannes.
François-Henri Pinault was the first to stand up publicly against Shariah law of active discrimination of the Lgbt community by forbidding Kering employees in all its companies from entering the Dorchester chain of hotels such as the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, Beverly Hills Hotel, The Bel Air Hotel, the Peninsula, St. Regis, Raffles, Claridges, Mandarin, Principe de Savoie, Adlon Kempensky and other worldwide luxury class hotels owned by the Republic of Bahrain which enforces its religious (Shariah) laws of discrimination with cruel and unusual punishment against homosexuality, lesbianism and transexuality.
He is also married to Salma Hayek, one of our most socially committed, feminist actors. Kering’s privileged position is a visible asset in standing up and out for women’s equality. And in today’s world of social networking, the nature of “advertising” is changing drastically. Attaching companies’ logos to every event and every item is often crassly “in your face”. (I won’t go into FIFA here). To quote one of my favorite brands, Bottega Veneta, also one of the Kering Group: “When your own initials are enough”, then you can attach value to more than a brand name product.
By attaching the name Kering to issues that matter on the level of humane well-being, the luxury products of Kering are enhanced by a benevolence for those who buy them or want to buy them. Caring people today are more consciously allying themselves with products which support humane causes for well-being rather than going for brand-names announcing their ability to pay high prices for things. I would prefer to buy Puma than a sports shoe whose company flaunts humane labor laws for example.
This trend in fact was recently elaborated upon by Johann Rupert, chairman of Richemont, owner of Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels who warned of the damage the luxury goods industry faces from growing wealth inequality and resentment among the have-nots of those who flaunt luxury watches and jewellery. Read more about this side of the discussion in the Financial Times reporting from the Ft Business of Luxury Summit in Monaco as Rupert discussed his fear that artificial intelligence will kill jobs. At the same time he appealed to Kering and Lvmh to join the online retailer being created by the merger of Yoox of Italy and Richemont’s Net-a-Porter in order to increase their 6% market share online to reach its 32% share now held through branded stores.
Today’s ubiquitous commercial opportunism takes a break at the great cultural event taking place every year at Cannes. And so, let us move on to the content of Kering’s Women in Motion.

The series opened with a Presidential Dinner:
Presidential Dinner honored Jane Fonda, Olivia de Haviland, the first female Jury Head in Cannes 50 years ago and Megan Ellison of Annapurna Productions. Olivia de Haviland was one of the most influential women of the world of cinema. What became known as the "de Havilland decision" was a court ruling in the 1940s that studios could no longer treat their performers as mere cattle. She and Joan Fontaine are the first sisters to win Oscars and the first ones to be Oscar-nominated in the same year. In 1965, she became the first female president of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival.
The first Women in Motion opening conference featured Isabella Rossellini, this year’s President of the Jury for Un Certain Regard. She spoke with French producer Claudie Ossard about Female Discrimination in Media. That was a very closed affair as was the exclusive and star-studded Presidential Dinner.

When her serial rapist becomes eligible for parole, Linor has to track down his previous victims in order to help keep him behind bars.
o “India's Daughter” (2015) is the story of the short life, and brutal gang rape and murder in Delhi in December 2012, of an exceptional and inspiring young woman. The rape of the 23 year old medical student and her death sparked unprecedented protests and riots throughout India and led to the first glimmers of a change of mind-set. The film examines the society and values which spawn such violent acts, and makes an optimistic and impassioned plea for change.
o “Mustang”(2015) sold internationally by Kinology, is a French-Turkish movie to be released in 2015 that tells the story of a family of five teenage sisters in a small Turkish village. The film highlights their fight to break free from social constraints and sexual taboo. It screened in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

The production company was founded by Gustavo Lombardo in 1904, and Locarno will celebrate the company’s history as well as its present day output.
The Festival audience will have the opportunity to see melodramas starring the screen couple Nazzari-Sanson, directed by Matarazzo, the Pane amore and Poveri ma belli series directed by Comencini and Risi.

The 27th Tokyo International Film Festival (Tiff) will be held from October 23-31. Tiffcom will run earlier than last year, from Oct 21-23.
The festival revealed that its 2013 edition drew 121,771 people, up 14%. Tiffcom 2013 hosted 316 exhibitors, up 15%, and 1,074 buyers, up 9%. More info here.
Locarno to celebrate Titanus
The 67th edition of the Locarno Film Festival (Aug 6-16) is planning a retrospective on the Italian production studio Titanus.
The production company was founded by Gustavo Lombardo in 1904, and Locarno will celebrate the company’s history as well as its present day output.
The Festival audience will have the opportunity to see melodramas starring the screen couple Nazzari-Sanson, directed by Matarazzo, the Pane amore and Poveri ma belli series directed by Comencini and Risi.
It will also screen films that revealed auteurs such as Fellini, Visconti, Lattuada...

French director Guillaume Gallienne's Me Myself And Mum won the Art Cinema Award, the top ‘unofficial’ prize in the Directors’ Fortnight side bar programme during the 66th Cannes Film Festival. The films were selected from a list of Latin American feature films with a minimum of 60 minutes in length that were premiered between April 1, 2011 and March 31, 2012. The winners and final nominees were selected by a six-member jury panel from a list of fiction and documentary films compiled from the selections of a nominating committee composed of 14 film professionals from Latin America, the U.S. and Europe (see list below).
Fiction Jury
Dennis Lim writes about film and popular culture for various publications including The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times. He is the founding editor of Moving Image Source, the online publication and research resource of the Museum of the Moving Image and was formerly the film editor of The Village Voice. His work has also appeared in The Believer, The Oxford American, Blender, Spin, Espous, Indiewire, New York Daily News, The Independent on Sunday, The Guardian, and the film quarterly Cinema Scope, where he is a contributing editor. A member of the National Society of Film Critics and the editor of The Village Voice Film Guide (2006), he has served as a member of the New York Film Festival selection committee and he teaches in the Cultural Reporting and Criticism graduate program a New York University.
Matías Piñeiro is a filmmaker and professor at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires. His first feature-length work, El hombre robado / The Stolen Man (2007), won awards at the Jeonju International Film Festival and at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival. In 2009, his second feature, Todos mienten / They All Lie, premiered at Bafici (Buenos Aires Festival International de Cine Independiente), where it won two awards. It also won a prize at the Santiago Festival Internacional de Cine. In 2010, he was selected—along with James Benning and Denis Côté—to screen his third film, Rosalinda at the 11th Jeonju Digital Project. Piñeiro recently premiered his most recent film, Viola, at the Toronto Film Festival, and it's slated for a Us release in 2013. He earned a filmmaking degree from Universidad del Cine. His award-winning films have been screened around the world, including at Anthology Film Archives, Festival des 3 Continents, the Festival del film Locarno, the London Film Festival, Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, the Museum of Modern Art, Rencontré Cinémas d’Amerique Latine de Toulouse, and the Viennale.
Frida Torresblanco served as a producer in Spain working on film including The Dancer Upstairs, directed by John Malkovich and starring Javier Bardem, as well as Susan Seidelman’s Gaudi Afternoon. She moved to New York City in 2002 to launch and lead Alfonso Cuaron’s film production company, Esperanto, where she served as Executive Producer and Creative On-Set Producer for The Assassination of Richard Nixon (directed by Niels Mueller, starring Sean Penn), among others. In 2006, Frida joined Alfonso Cuarón and Guillermo del Toro to produce El laberinto del Fauno / Pan’s Labyrinth (Three Oscars & another three Oscar nominations; three wins & five BAFTA nominations; a nomination for the Palm d’Or and a Golden Globe). The Hollywood Reporter named Frida one of the 50 most powerful Latinos in Hollywood. She also produced Rudo y Cursi (directed by Carlos Cuarón, starring Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna). In 2010, Frida launched her new film production company, Braven Films, with partners Eric Laufer and Giovanna Randall. Her next project, Magic Magic, produced through Braven Films, will star Michael Cera, Juno Temple and Emily Browning.
DocuMentary Jury
Ryan Harrington is the Director of Documentary Programs at the Tribeca Film Institute where he oversees the Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund, the Tfi Documentary Fund, Tribeca All Access documentary program and the Latin America Media Arts Fund while developing other initiatives and programs that support non-fiction filmmaking. Recent Tfi successes include Give Up Tomorrow, If a Tree Falls, The Redemption of General Butt Naked, The Oath, Enemies of the People, Marathon Boy and Donor Unknown. Independently he is currently working on the feature doc Hungry in America, with filmmakers Kristi Jacobson & Lori Silverbush and Participant Media, that explores why so many people in the USA go without food, and what can be done about it. Harrington managed production for A&E IndieFilms, the theatrical documentary arm of the A&E Network, for four years. Throughout his time there he championed the Oscar-nominated films Murderball and Jesus Camp, and the Sundance hits My Kid Could Paint That and American Teen.
Paula Heredia is a director and editor based in New York. She was awarded an Emmy for the HBO documentary In Memoriam, NYC 9/11/01, and an Ace Eddie Award for the acclaimed documentary Unzipped. Her directorial work includes the documentaries George Plimpton and the Paris Review, Ralph Gibson, and The Couple in the Cage. Her dramatic work includes Having a Baby, Tras La Ventana, Slings and Arrows, and La Cena de Matrimonio. Her short film La Pájara Pinta premiered at the Lincoln Center Film Society LatinBeat Film Festival. Heredia’s editorial work can be seen in the HBO feature-length documentary Addiction, which received the 2007 Emmy Governors Award, and Alive Day Memories—Home from Iraq, executive produced by James Gandolfini for HBO. Her new edit, The Art of Failure: Chuck Connelly Not for Sale and Jacques D'Ambois in China, will air on HBO this summer. Other editorial credits include: Modulations Cinema for the Ear, The Vagina Monologues, Finding Christa and Free Tibet. Paula’s work and creative process is featured in the book: The Art of the Documentary by Megan Cunningham. With partner Larry Garvin, she co-founded Heredia Pictures, heads the international committee of New York Women in Film and Television and serves on the board of advisors of Tribeca All Access and Clementina, Inc.

Having just had the lovely first poster for Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom this morning, we now have more great news for the film in the form of its world premiere.
Anderson’s latest offering will be released in the UK at the end of May, but before then, Cannes have announced that Moonrise Kingdom will be opening the 65th Cannes Film Festival on 16th May, taking the same slot Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris held at last year’s festival.
If you haven’t already seen the first trailer for the film that surfaced in January, I’d highly recommend watching it now. Anderson is one of my favourite writer-directors, and I cannot wait to see what he brings us with his first feature since 2009’s highly critically acclaimed Fantastic Mr. Fox, and his first live-action feature since 2007’s brilliant The Darjeeling Limited.
