Chicago – We’re back. Last month’s list of ten interesting new additions to the Netflix library was a huge success and it’s time for your October edition. Every one of the ten films/shows listed below has been added in the last 30 days, and the emphasis this time is on things you may not have seen.
So, don’t consider these the “best” movies when compared to one another but the best choices for your time. I mean, who hasn’t seen “Evil Dead 2,” “Ghostbusters,” and “Fargo,” all new to Netflix? You should totally watch those masterpieces again and then check out something new…

After Spellbound became a runaway cult success, documentaries about niche competitions have sprung up all over the place. When done right, the director manages to craft a compelling story by showing us the struggles of each participant or team and showing their rise or fall, resulting in films like The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, Wordplay, and Louder Than a Bomb. Where these films succeeded was in the establishment of the characters and then unraveling of their respective stories through the course of a feature-length film. With its mandate to fit within an hour-long time slot, Mariachi High, about a group of high school students shooting for the state title in Texas’s competitive mariachi tournaments, doesn’t have the time to help the audience embrace the kids or to show the competitions in their entirety, resulting in a sloppily edited mess that fails to enrapture or even...

Slam poetry. It can be a misunderstood art form, exalted in places like Def Poetry Jam, or snubbed as a silly high school phase. But what Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel's documentary "Louder Than A Bomb" does so well, is point out how something like slam poetry can offer an outlet, and a way out, for kids trapped in their circumstances. The film follows the Chicago area high school slam poetry competition of the same name, during a particularly dramatic and glorious run in the fall of 2007 and spring of 2008. Focusing on four teens from different Chicago high schools and their experiences with the Louder Than A Bomb competition, the film offers a look into this world and the impact it has on the lives of its participants. The four teen poets-- Lamar, Nova, Nate and Adam-- are clearly the standouts of the competition itself, true success stories for...

Since your plans to go meat bowling fell through, why not stay home and watch a thrilling documentary about high school students in Chicago delivering their experiences through the energetic art of spoken word? Is Louder Than a Bomb a tough sell? Of course it is, unless you’re already a slam poetry fan, but this is the kind of movie that you have to give a chance because it will richly reward you. Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel have directed a movie here that is genuine down to its bones, equal parts heartbreaking and triumphant, and engaging beyond its concept. You can watch it tonight (Jan. 5th) on Own at 9pm Et/8pm Ct. Plus, if you’re so inclined, you can ask the directors questions and make comments on The Twitter during the broadcast by hashtagging with #Ltab. A movie about high school poetry sounds dreadful, but these kids really are talented beyond their years...

Why not fold documentaries into my list of the "Best Films of 2011?" After all, a movie is a movie, right? Yes, and some years I've thrown them all into the same mixture. But all of these year-end Best lists serve one useful purpose: They tell you about good movies you may not have seen or heard about. The more films on my list that aren't on yours, the better job I've done.
That's particularly true were you to depend on the "short list" released by the Academy's Documentary Branch of 15 films they deem eligible for nomination. The branch has been through turmoil in the past and its procedures were "reformed" at one point. But this year it has made a particularly scandalous sin of
omission. It doesn't include "The Interrupters" (currently scoring 99% on the Tomatometer), which has received better reviews and been on more critic's Best lists than any other.

2010 DocuWeeks alum Louder Than A Bomb won the Humanitas award in the documentary category on Friday, September 23. Started in 1974, The Humanitas Prize celebrates “television programs that affirm the dignity of the human person, explore the meaning of life, enlighten the use of human freedom, and reveal to each person our common humanity.” Louder Than A Bomb is the story of four Chicago-based high school poetry teams who are preparing for the world’s largest slam poetry contest for youth. Exploring the ways writing shapes their world, and ...

Movie review of Louder Than a Bomb. Filmmakers Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel walk the hallways of various Chicago-land high schools, both the high achieving and the struggling, throughout their rousing documentary Louder Than A Bomb but don't think they're making a socio-political film about the declining quality of public education. That topic has been covered in other worthy films. Instead, Jacobs and Siskel borrow a page from popular network talent shows and reality series to showcase four talented teens and their school teams who compete in the Louder Than A Bomb competition, the world's largest youth poetry slam founded by Young Chicago...

The good news for the makers of "Louder Than a Bomb," a stirring documentary about high school poetry: Oprah wanted them to join her club. The catch: Oprah's new club charges dues (read: a cut of DVD revenue) that can complicate things for a movie with theatrical aspirations. Producer-directors Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel went with Winfrey, of course. And if her endorsement is even a fraction as valuable in independent documentary film as it has been in publishing, inclusion in the newly-launched Documentary Club on Oprah's TV network could give an...

One of two notable documentaries out this week follows in a big trend of late, that of competition-based films. Sure, it's a genre, one I addressed last week in my "Make Believe" review, but it's a genre that seems to be popping out a lot of examples right now. Of course, I already mentioned "Louder Than a Bomb" already in that review, referring to it as "'Spellbound' with poetry." Since then, I've been made aware of the upcoming film "Jig," which follows an Irish dance competition. I'm sure it's not the last comp-doc we see this summer, let alone this…...

The world’s largest youth slam poetry competition is the subject of Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel‘s audience-pleasing doc, Louder Than A Bomb, a high school competition pic in the tradition of films like Spellbound and Mad Hot Ballroom. For a decade now the Louder Than A Bomb competition has brought together budding young slam poets from over 60 Chicago high schools for a series of juried team and individual readings. The contest is highly competitive — one school goes home with the prize — but the event itself provides something far more valuable than competition; it is one of the few non-sports related outlets for teenagers from vastly different backgrounds in the largely segregated Second City to forge bonds that transcend societal divisions. Allowing us to glimpse the event through the experiences of three compelling, diverse young slam poets and the team from the wrong side of the tracks who are the defending champions,...

This week Captain Jack returns to theaters to face off against – well, no one really…That’s right. Not one single studio feature wanted to do battle with Pirates 4 at the box office. High-school life as depicted in movies or TV rarely has anything to do with actual high school; it’s more about some middle-aged writer’s memories of old teensploitation flicks, mixed with an unhealthy dose of wish-fulfillment. The documentary Louder Than A Bomb is a different kind of high-school movie, brimming with life and hope instead of social-climbing, bullying, and furtive first kisses. It should hit home with anyone whose experience of adolescence involved creativity, intellectual exploration, and getting to know and love people outside their immediate social circles. Directors Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel spent a year documenting four ...

There's really only one movie hitting theatres this weekend, because who wants to compete with one of the biggest flicks of the summer? Well, apparently Woody Allen does. But aside from his new movie Midnight in Paris in select theatres, there really aren't many alternatives out there. Will people still flock to see Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides despite the poor early reviews? I think you can count on it. Of course, whether or not it will break any records still remains to be seen. Do you have high hopes for Pirates 4? Have you already seen it? Feel free to discuss this weekend's moviegoing prospects in the comments below. Title: Louder Than A Bomb Directors: Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel We all have a need to be understood. That is the underlying essence of being human. For some it comes easy and for others, it’s difficult to convey especially if you’re a teenager. In these adolescent years, adults, teachers and parents are preparing you for the real world. For wonder why teens are rebellious and anxious, just itching to express them but held under strict discipline and rules. But finding the one thing that makes you happy and shows who you really are is important to teens especially at this young age. This is what’s ultimately going to make...

I own hundreds of books and not a single one of or about poetry. I have no favorite poets or poems. I can't and don't write poetry. Basically, there are few things I enjoy less in this world than poetry, something that will probably come as no surprise to anyone familiar with the assortment of poop jokes, "Seinfeld" references, and comic book-isms that I call writing. I am such a Philistine, I may as well be from Philistia. I say this not to boast (I'm frankly a little ashamed), but so you understand my approach to the documentary "Louder Than a Bomb," a film about high school poets. And that approach was this: an open mind and complete and total disinterest. So if this movie can win me over, it can win anyone over.
This movie won me over.

Who ever said that poetry and basketball don't mix? Nate, one of the central figures in the upcoming documentary "Louder Than A Bomb," certainly doesn't think so. Granted, he wasn't able to pursue both his hoop and penned dreams, but he was able to combine those two passions for one of his poems.

The 2011 edition of a movie critic's dream unreels again this week. In my own home town, I'll be able to show the films of my choice in a classic movie palace, flawlessly projected on a giant screen before a movie-loving audience. To paraphrase Orson Welles when he was given the run of Rko Radio Pictures to make his own movie, it's the biggest train set a boy could ever want.
Ebertfest 2011 runs April 27-May 1. The passes have been sold but we've always been able to find room for everyone in line inside the 1,600-seat Virginia Theater. Its long-term renovation continued this year with work on the lobby, the concession stand and the upstairs lobby. The marquee is a work in progress.
The preservation of theaters like this is invaluable; such buildings will never again be constructed, and most of our filmmakers will never have seen their films with such a large audience.

The Time 100 list always fascinates me, the whos and whys of the list never failing to hold my interest. First point of reference though is, okay, who from our world of film made it… James Cameron? Morgan Spurlock? Johnny Depp? Who???
For those of you who are similarly inclined, here are the folk from film on this year’s list, do you agree with their inclusion???
Amy Poehler – although known primarily for her work on “Saturday Night Live” and “Parks and Recreation,” she is, of course, a familiar face on film. “Baby Mama,” “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” “Blades of Glory” and “Mean Girls” come most easily to mind.
Geoffrey Canada – not quite a known entity in film, this incredible educator is featured heavily in a film of which we’re fans, Davis Guggenheim’s documentary “Waiting for ‘Superman.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Louder Than a Bomb tells the story of four Chicago high school poetry teams as they prepare to compete in the world's largest youth slam. By turns hopeful and heartbreaking, the film captures the turbulent lives of these unforgettable kids, exploring the ways writing shapes their world, and vice versa. Louder Than a Bomb is not about "high school poetry" as we often think of it. It's about language as a joyful release, irrepressibly talented teenagers obsessed with making words dance. While the topics they tackle are often deeply personal, what they put into their poems-and what they get out of them-is universal: the defining work of finding one's voice...

Balcony Releasing has unveiled a trailer for the Greg Jacobs and Jon Siskel directed doc Louder Than a Bomb, hands down one of the best documentaries I’ve seen in a long while. This exhilarating true life story was the winner of a Jury Award at the 2010 Austin Film Festival, as voted upon by a jury upon which yours truly served. The vote was unanimous, if I remember correctly. It tells the story of kids from schools around the Chicago area who compete for school pride in slam poetry competitions. If you do any one thing today, I’d recommend breathing (it seems necessary). But if you’d like to move on to a second thing, I’d recommend checking out this trailer. But...

“It is my intention to do for documentaries what we have been able to do for books.”
That’s what Oprah Winfrey said during an Own launch party at Sundance Film Festival this weekend.
“My goal, my dream, my intention is to bring documentaries into the mainstream, to have them stimulate new ways of thinking .”
She went on to say celebrity Rosie O’Donnell will be Own‘s “curator” of non-fiction films. O’Donnell will host specials in which the films’ makers and subjects are featured when the Own Documentary Film Club launches this spring. Forest Whitaker and Barbara Kopple have already begun working on documentaries for the network.
We’ve discussed one of the newly acquired docs, Family Affair, here. Now, we’d like to profile Louder Than A Bomb.

poetry slam n. – A spoken-word poetry competition.
Many young adults going through high school (which is often referred to as “the suck”) begin career paths that set them on the way to their future. Depending how they dedicate themselves in those four fast years, it could lead them towards something they’ve always wanted, or hit with a complete halt from a series of very bad decisions. In Louder Than A Bomb, we’re shown four young teenagers who, even being so young, were given a new chance at being someone in a poetry slam contest of the same name. All puns aside, Ltab is very explosive.
