Spoilers for War For The Planet Of The Apes lie ahead
Long before the arrival of VHS and DVD, it was tough for fans to relive their favourite movies once they left cinemas. Occasional television airings and novelizations were typically the only options, and for a time movie novelisations were a big thing. Of course, with the advent of home media, their popularity began to wane as watching a movie was always going to be preferable to reading it.
Novelisations tend to be mocked in fan circles too because many of them they were churned out to make a quick buck. There are plenty of examples of badly written paperbacks that just parrot the script, with little invention on the author’s part. That said,...

It may only be October, but Gwen Stefani is already prepping fans for the Christmas season! On Friday she released her new holiday album, You Make It Feel Like Christmas. The festive record is filled with old classics and new romantic odes, packed with plenty of Blake Shelton references.
The couple already released their duet, but perhaps the most telling tune is the original song, “My Gift Is You,” which was written by Stefani.
“I can’t wait to give all my lovin’ to my best friend. All I want is you to take my love and give it back again,” she croons in the chorus. "Don't need no money, don't need a thing. I don't even need a wedding ring. All I need is love and the truth, and I got it, my gift is you."

President John F. Kennedy‘s tendency toward extramarital romances has been well-documented in the decades since his assassination – but did one of his relationships play a direct role in his untimely death?
Judith Exner famously had a 2½-year affair with JFK, ending in 1962 – just one year before his assassination in Dallas.
Now – ahead of the 18th anniversary of her death at age 65 after a battle with breast cancer – People is looking back on her stunning 1977 memoir, which was full of revelations about the president’s much-debated relationship with the mob.

Ugh, President Trump is going to be even more insufferable this week, given how neatly Sunday’s Game of Thrones finale proved one of his most favorite theories: If you don’t have a giant wall on your border, bloodthirsty creatures bent on destruction will flood into your lands.
How does it all come about? Who has sex? And who dies in a most satisfying manner? Read on for the highlights of the Season 7 finale, “The Dragon and the Wolf.”

From “Wichita Lineman,” to “Rhinestone Cowboy,” Glen Campbell‘s wealth of hits too often overshadows his prolific early career as a session player in the 1960s. The exclusive story published by Titan Books tells events following Rise of the Planet of the Apes and continuing in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. This official prequel was plotted, and written, in close collaboration with the film team. For fans of the film franchise who have questions about the characters from the film franchise, this book does a great job of filling in the blanks.
Overall, this is a nice bridge between Dawn of Planet of the Apes and War for Planet of the Apes, with the beginning of the story following Malcolm, Ellie, and Alexander from Dawn. We find out that they are still with the apes in the days following Dawn, even though the end of the film seemed to imply that they fled to search for a new territory to live in. Throughout the book there are easter eggs from the original films, such...

Disclaimer: This post contains spoilers for War for the Planet of the Apes.
War for the Planet of the Apes premiered across the United States last night, and since Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is one of my favorite movies, I was front and center to catch the latest film in this incredible series (literally, I was seated in the second row from the front, dead center). By the time the credits rolled, I was convinced I had seen not a modern day classic, but an all-time treatise on filmmaking. War is the best reviewed film in the series, and director Matt Reeves is firing on all cylinders, doing things with CGI characters that other filmmakers aren't even conceiving.

Twin Peaks Recap is a weekly column by Keith Uhlich covering David Lynch and Mark Frost's limited, 18-episode continuation of the Twin Peaks television series. So that's how David Lynch does an info dump. First, with a cheeky, knowing scene featuring the brothers Horne: "Jerry, what's going on?" asks Ben (Richard Beymer) after his cannabis-infused sibling (David Patrick Kelly) phones him from the woods. "I think I'm high!…I don't know where I am!" Jerry screams, perhaps speaking for a good subsection of the Twin Peaks revival audience, who have, over the six prior installments, been given only glimpses of a larger picture. Narrative momentum comes in asides; the more prevalent longueurs are reserved for atmosphere and mood, for full immersion in apparent stasis.Part 7 shakes things up, following the brotherly freak-out with several story reveals that come in quick succession. But there's a niggling sense throughout all the...

"I refuse to accept the end of man." 20th Century Fox has revealed one final trailer for the new War for the Planet of the Apes movie, directed again by Matt Reeves, continuing (and likely ending) this latest trilogy of Apes movies. The last trailer for this is one of my favorite trailers this year so far, and this movie is most #1 most anticipated of the year (followed by Blade Runner 2049, The Last Jedi, and Dunkirk). Andy Serkis returns to play Caesar, and the cast includes Woody Harrelson as his adversary, the Colonel. Also starring Judy Greer as Cornelia, Max Lloyd-Jones as Blue Eyes, plus Steve Zahn, Chad Rook, Ty Olsson, Aleks Paunovic and Sara Canning. I'm completely sold on this movie already, so I don't need to see any more. But this is an superb trailer that plays up the epic feeling of this man vs ape war.

I first met Gérard in 2001. Alexander Pierrepont brought my wife Yuko and me to his radio show to be interviewed sometime in the middle of summer in the middle of the night. We immediately hit it off, both of us loving jazz and justice just equally. I always made him laugh… we always understood each other despite my non-existent French and his almost non-existent English. We would see each other every time I went to Paris, and I'd always go to a concert he'd booked at Sunside/Sunset or La Java. He was very generous to me and would always give me CDs from his incredible label. I had already had some LPs on Marge/Futura but knew nothing about the man behind the label; as I said, we became fast friends. Sometime in autumn around 2013 Gerard offered me a gig at La Java. He said there would be little...

Well, that was quite the ride.
There was a lot going on during The Vampire Diaries Season 8 Episode 12.
Seriously, if you blinked, you probably missed something.
Watching everything with Bonnie was just heartbreaking. I was so sure she had her magic back, but she had actually opened up a door to hell and Enzo was communicating with her.
It was about time Abby showed up to help Bon-Bon through a tough spot, but it's doubtful Bonnie will be able to get over Enzo's body being burnt.
For Bonnie, there was a real chance she could save Enzo. In reality, there was no chance, and that's what made it even sadder. She spent much of her life helping those around her, so she deserved a happy ending.
I can't be the only one who thought she and Matt were going to unite against the Salvatore brothers in the final moments of the hour.

Niche subscription video on-demand (Svod) services have become a major trend over the past year, and for American consumers, it is time to another another name to the list of platforms that offer hyper-specific content to viewers. John F. Kennedy hobnobbed with plenty of superstars during his presidency, but perhaps one of his most famous friendships was with Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. In the new book JFK and the Masculine Mystique: Sex and Power on the New Frontier, author Steven Watts takes a closer look at this relationship, and how the two men influenced ideas of masculinity in the Camelot era.
On the night before his inauguration, Kennedy took a moment to thank Sinatra for his work on his campaign, particularly for spearheading the night’s concert that featured big names like Ella Fitzgerald, Gene Kelly and Nat King Cole.

With “Silence” finally seeing the light of day on the big screen in about a month’s time, it’s worth remembering the film is not the only project Martin Scorsese has been developing for years. In the background for quite some time, the filmmaker has been keeping an eye on “Sinatra,” a biopic about Ol’ Blue Eyes. Early on, Phil Alden Robinson (“Field Of Dreams,” “Sneakers“) had penned a draft of the script, and Scorsese had named Al Pacino as his choice to play Sinatra in his older years, with Robert De Niro as Dean Martin.

We asked All the questions (except Delena. Sorry guys! I can explain!) and got as many answers as we were legally allowed to reveal, including: flashbacks, Top 3 Favorites, preferred ships, and Hero Hair!
Somerhalder is quite the chatty guy, and you never quite...

“Put me out of my misery!” begged Gwen Stefani, over and over again, as she opened The Voice Top 12 results telecast with a performance of her new single.

It’s hard to argue with the programming behind the newest art house theater making cinephiles across the country wish they lived in New York City. Opening earlier this month in the Big Apple, The Metrograph has instantly become one of the new hotspots in NYC, with everything ranging from a film like Carol being presented in gorgeous 35mm to a new, week-long run of legendary cult classic from unsung director Stephanie Rothman, The Student Nurses. However, it’s their first major retrospective that has film nerds buzzing.
Marking the first career-spanning retrospective for the director in over a decade, The Metrograph is launching, this week, a lengthy dive into the career of filmmaker Jean Eustache. Much of French cinema history revolves around the New Wave filmmakers ranging from Jean-Luc Godard to Agnes Varda, but with names like Chantal Akerman and Philippe Garrel marking the heights of the filmmakers just a generation removed,...

Each weekend we highlight the best repertory programming that New York City has to offer, and it’s about to get even better. Opening on February 19th at 7 Ludlow Street on the Lower East Side is Metrograph, the city’s newest indie movie theater. Sporting two screens, they’ve announced their first slate, which includes retrospectives for Fassbinder, Wiseman, Eustache, and more, special programs such as an ode to the moviegoing experience, and new independent features that we’ve admired on the festival circuit (including Afternoon, Office 3D, and Measure of a Man).

Killer Mike, we're on to you. We see your soul-food hangouts with Bernie Sanders, we see your attempts at running for local office, we see your all-around wokeness, and it's all starting to make sense. Atlanta rap legend Killer Mike, of Run the Jewels, wants to be president. Sure, he hasn't gone rogue mid-VMAs speech to announce such plans, but the signs are all there. Take, for example, his appearance on last night's Late Show. He wasn't there to promote an album (though he says RTJ3 is coming) or himself (though he is excited about back-to-back Coachella performances). No, he simply stopped by to charm Stephen Colbert, representative for all white people, and Colbert's white constituency, with his supreme knowledge of racial politics. In practically one breath, he educated Colbert on the Blue Eyes–Brown Eyes project, institutional racism, empathy, barbershop politics, and why Mlk would've been feeling the Bern,...

As we turn the calendar to a new year, instead of looking back at the year that was, 2016 starts on what is a quietly interesting theatrical release date. With Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight expanding from its original limited release roadshow run into theaters across the country, and The Force Awakens still tearing up the worldwide box office, one smaller documentary has started 2016 with a wonderfully quiet bit of counter programming.
Entitled This Is Bossa Nova, director Paulo Thiago sends viewers headlong into the world of Bossa Nova music, in what is both a quietly engaging, and shockingly dense, journey into one of world music’s most beautiful genres. To many people, at least here stateside, Bossa Nova music is a genre that is a relatively large blind spot. This year’s festival season has seen a major influx of documentaries focused on musical artists. This is hardly a surprise to those that have followed the Oscar winners for best doc in recent years as 20 Feet from Stardom, which followed the lives of background singers to famous acts, took home the award in 2013 and Searching for Sugar Man, chronicling the investigation into the death of American musician Sixto Rodriguez by two Cape Town fans, won the prize in 2012.
This season boasts a slew of new musical documentaries hoping to achieve the same Oscar success of those in previous years.
Here’s a rundown of this year’s sonic documentaries:
Amy: Director Asif Kapadia presents the story of superstar British songbird Amy Winehouse, who passed away at the age of 27 in 2011 from alcohol poisoning, told in the singer’s own words in archival footage and never-before released tracks.

It’s a blessing that the first Die Hard film even got made, let alone that it blossomed into a film-movie (and counting) action franchise that it is today. The original film began as an adaptation of the second book in a crime series – the first book of which was brought to the screen with Frank Sinatra starring. So Old Blue Eyes very nearly wore the vest.
The script wasn’t finished when production began, director John McTiernan hated the project…it’s truly miraculous it came out the platonic perfect action movie it is (what excuse does A Good Day To Die Hard have?) Since then, the ongoing adventures of John McClane and his multiple bad days have built their own rich, self-referential mythology.
In fact, it’s an action movie series with a much stronger continuity than any other, with recurring villains, nods to the...

It seems like only a few weeks ago that documentarian Alex Gibney was taking down Scientology. (Oh right, it was.) What better way to follow up than with a four-hour paean to Ol’ Blue Eyes? The multi-hyphenate pop-cultural icon known as Frank Sinatra would have been 100 this year (he died in 1998), so the time is right for a look back at his varied career. Gibney’s doc, spread over two nights, mostly concentrates on the singer-actor-activist’s first 60 years, using his 1971 “Retirement Concert” (a premature farewell performance, as it turned out) as the

When a documentarian is making a film about one of the most recognized figures of the past century, he or she has a few approaches to avoid repeating the same biographical points. They can structure the non-fiction film around a unique moment in that person’s life, moving from a centerpiece to fill in the historical dots that made this figure so essential. Another method would be to go for breadth, covering a wide spectrum of aspects of this person’s life to tell the most comprehensive story one can.
