Steps forward, steps back and a standstill.
MadValkyrie26 October 2022
There can be no sitcom style happy ending to a story of this complexity or even one that is completely satisfying. But that is the point of The Patient. In this final episode, Sam faces his literal and psychological demons and eventually finds himself truly understanding himself on a new level. Alan has evolved into a man who finally truly understands himself and as such, can finally help both Sam and his own family. The performances of the entire cast in this episode are phenomenal; powerful and gut wrenching. While the last minute of this episode was initially frustrating, it speaks to the true message of this series: healing and self understanding through therapy is perpetual. Nothing in life is ever 100% resolved and this episode of The Patient reminds us of that.

The Ending Was Inevitable!
Mehki_Girl26 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
As the producers have said, this was the inevitable ending to the story.

Once Alan was resigned to his fate after trying to manipulate Sam into letting him go, he decided to proceed to his inevitable fate, not that he wasn't hoping it wouldn't result in his release.

I was pleased when he told Sam's mother that she failed to protect her son; that she didn't leave, but allowed her husband to brutalize him.

I suppose that since she created him is one of the reasons why she lets him keep killing innocent people in her twisted logic. I thought at one point Sam was going to kill her for allowing him to be abused.

I think if his dad had been drunk, living in squalor and verbally abusive, it would have triggered him enough to continue to kill him until he was dead, but he didn't.

I don't think he progressed. He's a serial killer with no conscience and would eventually kill again. Killing Alan and Alan as human-being meant nothing to him.

His feeble attempt to not kill again will be ineffective and once the mom stops feeling guilty for her inaction in his childhood, maybe she'll finally take pity on the victims who's blood is also on her hands and finally dial 911.

A truly fascinating ending to a Pretty Good drama
KonoPez26 October 2022
The Patient was a Pretty Good show. Very firmly in that quality zone. Better than a lot of garbo streaming shows, but far from making the cut on anyone's shows of the decade list. This meant tahg often took itself more seriously than it could pull off- occasionally too an unintentionally comedic extent. Most prominent is the recurrent Holocaust imagery. Like, they were doing something with it, and the thing they were attempting was interesting, but really? Like he's in a literal concentration camp? Like I get that it's about mortality and finding comfort in faith and whatever, but it always just felt a little weird.

However one area they certainly weren't lacking in was committing. They had a very specific show they wanted to make, and they went for it. And of course, this is exemplified by the ending. They did something truly unique and interesting with it. I'm not really convinced they totally pulled it off, but it at least earns a genuine emotional impact.

I'm not sure many people will come back to watch this show years from now, but I think it will persist in discussion about televisions for a good while if only for the ending alone.

Best episode
wvj326 October 2022
I don't know why this episode got bad reviews. It was the best by far. It was definitely the most realistic. I don't want to give spoilers but this episode was full of emotions. I did like many of the previous episodes but for me this episode spoke the most. It could have had a happier but also a more unrealistic ending but then that wouldn't have been true to what the series was about. I think it ended the way it needed to end. I still think this snow would have been better as a movie and I don't know the purpose in 20 something minute episodes but all in all it was a good mini series for the most part.

The Acting & Actors are phenomenal
presleylennonej25 October 2022
The acting & actors are phenomenal. Having said that, the story is quite disturbing & I don't know why I kept watching, except that I wanted to see how it would end.

If anyone had any question as to whether Steve Carell could pull off quite serious roles, this show, added to his other more serious roles, should leave you with little doubt.

Honestly, I truly enjoy Carell's humor so I love him in that type role. Or even in a serious role such as Mitch Kessler, over this kind of serious. Either way, the acting among all on the show is fantastic, the way the story plays out or how the scenes of Alan talking to himself are shown, all of it is great. I'm just not sure how I feel about the story itself... yet... I still have to see the final episode & see how this all wraps up to really say on that one...

slow burn, holes galore
dollfacecrafter8 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I dont mind a slow burn, but this could have actually been shorter, I would have liked to see more family background and explanation for both the captor and the captive..........poor kid didnt have a chance with a Mother who enables him and a father who beat him and doesnt know why, because he was weird ?? Wow, some people should not have kids. Some of the holes are how come the father didnt report that his kid tried to kill him ? And what about his boss ? There were no consequences for this kid. And this story is from the doctor's point of view, but he dies, so how can he be telling the story ? Did I miss something ? The performances were very good and I did like the story overall.

Nerve-wracking, heartbreaking, tear-jerking finale!
adibencun25 October 2022
The Patient is one of those rare shows which I followed week to week, as the new episode aired.

Then, due to its run time, which to me was uncharacteristic, but nonetheless convenient (for drama TV), I decided to do the best thing ever invented by people watching program.

Meaning, of course, patiently wait (pun intended) until the finale to binge-watch the entire series.

That day has finally come, and I remembered first reading about The Patient, when somebody wrote, as I recall, how there isn't a single dull moment or even a single frame that is wasted, or otherwise used as an unmemorable filler.

And now, after watching the series finale, which was almost double the length in comparison to the earlier episodes (yes please!), I am convinced!

This is, however, a spoiler-free review, and my first ever on this glorious site.

Actually, it was thanks to the brilliant writing of Joel Fields and Joseph Weisberg that I created my IMDB profile in the first place.

And, after watching over 750 movies and a bit over 30 different sitcoms, various miniseries, and drama TV shows, it is my hope that I am able to distinguish and recognize the content that I like, and enjoy sharing with others.

As every previous episode reached a suspenseful boil, leaving us craving for more with the plot thickening, the series finale finally provides the inevitable conclusion that we both anticipated and dreaded, but not without its signature quirky moments, heartfelt conversations, and timely cliffhanger-like cut-offs.

This short but intense course in psychotherapy, parenting, and overcoming hardships of life, brought me, back and forth, to both laughter, and muffled tears.

Extra special attention is advised for Doctor Strauss food-for-thought monologues, that were equally emphatic and calming in an uncanny way, for a man in such a desperate situation.

This, once again, goes off to show the brilliance of Steve Carell, after the role in Foxcatcher (2014) and proves his undeniable range as an actor, often wrongly seen a one-dimensional due to his celebrated success in the globally acclaimed series The Office.

And with that, the only thing left for me to write is: 10/10! - and thank you for reading.

I hope you enjoy the show as much as I did, whatever the reviews (or lack thereof) might have to say.

Disappointing Climax!
Laqshayaroraofficial25 October 2022
Finale episode is interesting and engaging but the climax could have been better.

Problems: Family drama of Dr. Strauss was kinda boring , writers could have made it way more engaging

Documentary style filming

Climax didn't make much sense to me (I'm talking about the last person who died, I mean the way he died and what he was asking for was inconsistent to what he was asking before.

I don't understand why they always have to make us hear the sound of Sam urinating... I mean why?

They didn't leave anything for season 2. That was pretty sad. Should have ended with a cliffhanger or something to look forward to.

It would have been better if they had released all the episodes on the same day.

Overall, an average finale but still a binge worthy show. I loved the performance of Domhnall and Steve, award winning performance by both.

okay ending to a fascinating season
nerrdrage14 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This show gets bonus points for going with a non-feel-good ending, but one that does make sense for the characters. There won't be a season 2 or at least not with Steve Carrell, which means even if it happens, I'm out. He's the reason I stuck with this the whole season.

Even if there was a season 2, it would be very short, because Sam left more than enough clues for the police to track him down. He failed to show up for work right after his boss mysteriously vanishes. Isn't that worth a knock on the door from the local cops?

Was there really no evidence at all that Sam visited Alan in his home for the first session? No Ring doorbell cameras in that upscale neighborhood? No traffic cameras anyway between Sam's house and Alan's? At minimum, they should have Sam's face on camera if not his license plates.

When the cops realize Sam might have something to do with his boss' disappearance, all it would take is for them to cross reference him with Alan's case, and boom they've got a match.

Plus we have to assume Sam's dad didn't report him for attempted murder. And that the disappearance of Elias didn't lead to suspicion of the inspector who he had recently had a run-in with. The local cops would have to be comatose not to zero in on Sam, too late to save Alan, but shortly after the end credits roll.

Episode 10
bobcobb30126 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The Patient has been a fun and wild ride for the last two months on Hulu. It has been appointment TV for me every Tuesday morning and I did not fall behind like I did for a lot of shows out there.

But the ending did leave me a little bit underwhelmed. I guess we should have known it would have ended with a death, but we did not even get to see a real fight sequence between Alan and Sam. Even if Steve Carell wasn't up for it, you could have done something more physical than we got here.

Not a bad finale by any means, but I am just not sure what the right ending was. This didn't feel like it though.

Slow burn with questionable ending
coryreedcaughie25 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It took me while to really get into this show, I don't mind a slow burn drama and I get that the focus was on Sams recovery with him not wanting to "hurt" people anymore. However I felt that I grew bored watching this series as a whole and the conclusion was very sloppy and mundane with no real satisfying conclusion with no real sense of justice. When I finished the episode I blinked a few times and uttered a couple of expletives. I created this account to give my two cents which is something I've never felt I needed to do until now. I will say the acting was top notch and compelling but all that lead up was a massive let down. I feel my rating as a whole is fair as I would rate the entire show as a 7 but this specific episode was very blasé.

Rough Ending
seanalpiner26 October 2022
I've been invested in this show since the beginning. My wife and I watch every episode and for the most part, we've been very intrigued by the writing and direction. What makes the show great is the internal dialogue that Steve Carrell faces throughout his time. We learn more about his prior life and he comes to realizations throughout every episode. Unfortunately, the last episode disappoints and erases all the good from the rest of the show. Not only is the storytelling boring and predictive, what really disappoints is that at the pivotal moment of the show, the showrunners decide to skip forward and betray all the characters involved. Unfortunately, the show went from a 6/10 to a 1/10 because of this ending.

disappointing
sixmeows25 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Very Intriguing first half episodes, then predominantly padding til absurd finale, as pretentious as anything on tv, excepting maybe lifetime 'oh no, he's really a bad guy?' movies. If you can distill pop therapy theories from this ridiculously unbelievable, out-of-character finale, after Alan takes 9 episodes to realize the absolute value of his life, while mass killer Sam faux-progressively "wavers", then you must've enjoyed the blackout cuts, the nazi concentration camp allusions and illusions, and especially the shabbat dinner of death and hilariously chichi coda of the son. Hey, let's put an incongruous shocking ending on this.

Ridiculous waste of time
PetersonML26 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I watched all 10 episodes to be presented with the most ludicrous ending. I can't understand the negative sensationalism of killing the psychiatrist instead of at least having some satisfaction of killing the lunatic mother. Who writes this crap anyway! I would have given this anthology of garbage a negative 10 if the option were available. Steve Carell should very obviously stick to comedy. Will there be a 2nd season of this...if so, new writers should be hired and a story line that has some sense of satisfaction for the protagonist. There is enough grief in the world right now...let's have a bit more justice if you please.

Pointless but engaging waste of time.
dancaroleshealy9 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I hated the mother so much; she and Sam's father are the only ones that should have died. She is a such a pathetic and weak person that killing her would give the audience some closure. And what is with Sam telling the family where the body wasn't. ??? I kept hoping he'd given the location of the Greek man's body and kept waiting for the scene where the medical examiner finds the note in his mouth and we could have a decent ending. And is anyone else sick of the director's sick fascination with urinating? We are all human and adults and get what happens in the bathroom- such an insult to viewers to have to spell it out.
