Updated: Paramount/Hasbro Entertainment’s Transformers One is out of the gate with a $39M global start. From just 50 international box office markets (representing only 40% of the overseas footprint), the first animated Transformers movie in close to 40 years grossed $14M.
The Josh Cooley-directed origins story came in below projections domestically and international is off to a softer start than hoped.
While there are still major markets to come including Brazil, Italy, Korea, China, Germany, UK and France, it’s still a bit of a head-scratcher that the offshore opening wasn’t bigger given reviews, word of mouth and how much perceived anticipation there has been for the movie. A work-in-progress screening at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival had the room on its feet in June. However, we are hearing about general softness in the marketplace — and the back-to-school period can be a tricky one. The hope here is...

Optimus Prime and Megatron put up a fight, but in the end, the robots were no match for everyone’s favorite bio-exorcist.
After an unusually close box office race, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” emerged victorious over newcomer “Transformers One” to retain the No. 1 spot for three consecutive weekends. The spooky Warner Bros. sequel added a strong $26 million from 4,172 theaters, bringing its tally to $225 million domestically and $329.7 million globally.
Meanwhile, “Transformers One” kicked off behind expectations with $25 million from 3,978 venues. It’s a meager start for Paramount and Hasbro’s animated movie, which cost $75 million and was targeting a start of $30 million to $40 million. It only brought in $14 million internationally for a worldwide total of $39 million. Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry and Scarlett Johansson lead the voice cast of “Transformers One,” the franchise’s first theatrical animated film since 1986’s “The Transformers: The Movie.” That film was a box office disappointment, though its...

Aside from extremely positive reviews, the film is also slated for a strong opening at the domestic box office. As a result, the film might be able to give some stiff competition to the likes of Disney and Pixar, especially in a year where the House of the Mouse has dominated the box office in the animation medium. Here is how The Wild Robot‘s opening weekend predictions are shaping up to be.

A film open about mental health, Inside Out 2 has been a huge hit for Pixar – but a new report about crunch culture suggests a price may have been paid by the animators that made it.
Here’s a troubling story that has emerged via IGN that alleges that Pixar is guilty of treating some of its hard-working and talented workforce in a pretty disgraceful fashion.
The beloved studio has endured a rocky few years off the back of the gobal pandemic, but recent releases such as Elemental and this year’s Inside Out 2 have restored the studio’s fortunes to its former glories.
Inside Out 2 in particular has been an incredible success, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in history. It’s currently made over $1.6bn at the global box office.
Sadly though, it seems that not everybody who worked on the film will get to enjoy the spoils of success.

Just one month before Pixar’s hugely successful “Inside Out 2” was released in theaters, the animation studio laid off around 175 employees. This represented approximately 14% of Pixar’s total workforce. Many of those let go had spent over a year working tirelessly to get the film ready for its summer 2024 premiere. According to former employees, some animators were regularly working seven-day weeks for months straight.
The sudden layoffs in May 2024 left the affected workers feeling betrayed and struggling financially. As part of their compensation, Pixar employees could earn bonuses tied to how well a film did at the box office. However, being laid off just before “Inside Out 2” made over $1.6 billion globally meant the former staff missed out on those incentives. One ex-employee told a news outlet the bonuses “partially make working at Pixar worth it.”

“Hacks,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Black Cake” and Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” were among the big winners on Thursday as Humanitas revealed its 2024 Humanitas Prize recipients. The ceremony, held at Avalon Hollywood, revealed honors in nine juried categories, including TV, film and documentary fields.
“We actually got something friends,” “Origin” filmmaker Ava DuVernay said in accepting the award for drama feature — which had been previously snubbed through last year’s Oscars season. “We went through that whole awards gauntlet, and then this popped up in the summer, and I thought, ‘wow, they’re kind of off kilter for the award season!’ Because they don’t care about that… they’re doing something different. Over the past few years, Pixar has seen some rather dark days. The Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 caused their film for that year, Onward, to be pulled from theaters early, leading to it flopping at the box office. Their following three releases, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red, were all released directly to streaming to supplement the recently launched Disney+ service. In 2022, they returned to theaters with Lightyear, which burned up on impact at the box office. Then 2023’s Elemental, while not a flop, was a disappointment to many.
But now the studio seems to have its mojo back, with Inside Out 2 breaking multiple box office records from being Disney’s most successful animated film since the pandemic to their most successful Pixar movie to their most successful traditionally animated movie of all time. Now, after an extended theatrical run, has dethroned the 2019 remake of The Lion King and is now...

Step into the enchanted forests and mountains of an epic fantasy world with Elemental Exiles. Developed by Final Game Studio, this indie card battler drops players into thrilling magical skirmishes where the outcome hinges on shrewdly harnessing the elemental forces of nature, fire, and water.
Taking on the role of brave heroes from races like elves and dwarves, you’ll forge into battles wielding a deck containing attacking and defensive cards. Mastering the elemental strengths and weaknesses proves key, as fire scorches nature but sizzles against water. Positioning cards in just the right order can also trigger bonus effects, like a water card that deals extra damage following a fire spell.
Energy limits the number of cards you can unleash each turn, demanding care in your strategy. Opponents thoughtfully signal forthcoming moves, affording opportunities to cleverly counter incoming assaults. Outmaneuvering foes rewards you with gold for upgrades, along with new cards granting your powers growth.

Disney now has three hits currently in theaters. “Alien: Romulus” exceeded expectations to hit about $41.5 million domestically in its opening weekend. Globally, the film reached about $108.2 million.
This is a good start for the film, which has an estimated budget of $80 million (not counting the millions in ads). If you use the normal estimates to predict break even, the film must bring in about $160 million—$200 million, and it’s already halfway there.
As I mentioned, Disney currently has three “hit” films in theaters. “Deadpool & Wolverine” has earned about $1.1 billion and is now the top box office for an “R-rated” film.
“Inside Out 2” is still in theaters over two months later and is at almost $1.6 billion, making it the biggest animated film in history and number ten on the top films of all time list.
The success of these films is good news for the Walt Disney Company, which...

Led by Disney’s “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” with a big assist from Universal’s “Despicable Me 4,” this has been a terrific box-office summer. It gives real hope for the future when it was in short supply.
However, there’s a fly in the White Claw. The foreign takes are way, way down, to the point that it may force studios to reassess the budget parameters that can actually turn a profit.
We looked at the top 10 summer grosses in the U.S./Canada for 2019, 2023, and 2024 to date (skipping the Covid-impacted 2020-2022). The results show a sharp drop in share of foreign gross even as domestic recovers.

Zootopia 2 is making a splash at D23 with new and old characters, not to mention teasing new cold-blooded animals.
After Strange World, Lightyear, and Elemental disappointed at the box office, Disney decided to go all in on animated sequels, which has already proven successful with Inside Out 2. Plans are already in motion for sequels to Frozen and Moana, plus Zootopia.
It's already had a spin-off with Zootopia+ on Disney+, which explored many of the lives and backstories of the side characters from the first film, with Zootopia 2 being promised that it'll "take it to another level."

Disney and Pixar's "Inside Out 2" continues to be the story of the year at the box office. The animated sequel has had an impressive run and, even if it had stopped making money weeks ago, it would still sit atop the rest of the competition as the highest-grossing movie of 2024. The cash keeps flowing, though, and the film keeps making its way deeper into the record books. Now, Pixar's latest has officially cracked the top 10 of all time, passing Marvel's seminal 2012 superhero blockbuster "The Avengers."
As of this writing, director Kelsey Mann's "Inside Out 2" has earned $1.524 billion worldwide, per Deadline. That total includes an astonishing $905.1 million overseas to go with $618.8 million domestically. That puts it at number 10 all time on the global box office chart, unadjusted for inflation. It most recently passed "Furious 7" ($1.515 billion) and, most importantly, "The Avengers," which shattered records by pulling in $1.52 billion globally in its day.

The return of Chicken Run after a 20-year hiatus saw viewers flock to the movie, which was crowned the most-watched streamer title in the UK last year by Ofcom’s Media Nations report.
Aardman’s sequel Dawn of the Nugget starring Bella Ramsey and Thandiwe Newton drew an average audience of 7.5 million within the first 28 days of its release, according to the regulator’s annual report. The movie was met with a warm critical reception, coming more than two decades after the 2000 original.
Chicken Run landed around 1 million more viewers than Pixar’s animated pic Elemental, which was in second place and was Disney+’s only title in the top 10.
Having generated more than £1B ($1.3B) for the first time in the UK last year, Amazon Prime Video’s sole entrant was Clarkson’s Farm, with a most-watched ep of 5.6 million. TV shows were rated via their most-watched episode rather than taking the overall series.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” landed on top of the South Korea box office in a weekend double header with “Despicable Me 4.”
But, if the idea of opening two Hollywood franchise movies against each other was to shock Korean audiences back into the cinemas, it was a misfire.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” earned $5.48 million between Friday and Sunday, accounting for a nearly 45% share of the overall market, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). Over its full five-day opening session, it accumulated $8.18 million.
“Despicable Me 4” took second place with $2.42 million, representing 20% of the nationwide weekend total. Over its five-day opening run, the film earned $3.98 million.
Overall box office at the weekend was $12.2 million, a week-on-week improvement of 17%. But final figures for July are likely to significantly lag those of last year, when “Elemental,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1” and “Smugglers” were the top titles.

It's official: "Inside Out 2" is now the biggest animated movie of all time at the box office. After just five weeks in theaters and a run for the ages under its belt, Pixar's sequel has now amassed $1.46 billion worldwide, according to a press release from Disney. That puts it just ahead of 2019's "Frozen II" ($1.45 billion worldwide) to become the new champion of animation at the box office, as well as the 13th highest-grossing movie ever overall, unadjusted for inflation. While there is a small caveat that we'll get to in a moment, this is a huge deal for a slew of reasons.
Director Kelsey Mann's "Inside Out 2" has not left the top three on the domestic charts since it premiered on June 12. It had already set a record for an animated film, crossing the $1 billion mark globally and becoming the first movie since "Barbie" to reach that milestone.

More than five weeks into its theatrical run, "Inside Out 2" continues to break records. Disney and Pixar's blockbuster animated sequel has become the single box office story of 2024 for a variety of reasons, from bringing the storied animation studio back to its former glory days to becoming one of just a small handful of films in the pandemic era to cross the $1 billion milestone, it's been an unbelievably impressive run. Now, the film has delved even further into record-breaking territory as it has entered the top 15 all-time list of biggest global grossers.

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has proved to be the box office smash of the year thus far, bringing in huge numbers from its theatrical run.
Pixar’s Inside Out 2 is now officially the studio’s most financially successful film of all time. Earlier this week the film passed the global total of Incredibles 2 at $1.243 billion to take the number one spot atop a list of beloved and successful movies. That’s not the only achievement that the film earned this week, either, as it also became the first film this year to go beyond the billion dollar mark on its theatrical run.
As noted by Forbes, Inside Out 2 already sits comfortably atop the 2024 rankings and could yet double the totals of 2024’s current runner up, Dune: Part Two. Should it continue to perform well this week, there’s every chance it could surpass the theatrical gross of 2013’s Frozen at $1.285bn,...

Pixar’s latest runaway success, Inside Out 2, has now become the studio’s highest-grossing movie in history. The nearly decade-long follow-up to the 2015 original has seemingly surpassed everyone’s expectations and has, in a way, saved the studio from a long streak of failure.
In recent years, the studio has been having some major box office duds, beginning with 2020’s Onward being pulled from theaters early due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Their following three movies, Soul, Luca, and Turning Red, were released straight to streaming. 2022’s Lightyear was a massive flop, and 2023’s Elemental, while not outright bombing, failed to meet expectations.
Inside Out 2 opened to $154 million and has since made $543.5 million at the domestic box office and $708 million internationally, for a current total of $1.251 billion at the box office. It has since become Disney’s highest-grossing animated film since the 2020 pandemic and is now Pixar’s highest-grossing film of all time,...

“First time in a long time I didn’t hear any buzz at all about a July 4th blockbuster movie,” a friend texted me last week. His message struck me as odd, since I can’t turn a corner without being bombarded by mutant Minions: The yellow pranksters keep showing up on billboards, product tie-ins, pop-up ads. My friend is engaged to be married, with a baby on the way, but he’s not a parent yet, and he’s clearly not thinking like one.
The reality is this: The weekend that once belonged to Will Smith — and which hosted a geriatric Indiana Jones’ return last year — has long been the domain of “Despicable Me” movies. For seven of the last 14 years, Illumination Entertainment has planted one of its toon tentpoles (which also include “The Secret Life of Pets”) on or immediately after Independence Day weekend. Their latest behemoth,...

Joy, meet Euphoria. “Inside Out 2” has become the highest-grossing film in the long and distinguished history of Pixar, the studio behind the animated phenomenon.
The hit family film has earned $1.25 billion globally and passed “Incredibles 2,” the animation studio’s previous record holder that earned $1.24 billion worldwide over its run. “Inside Out 2” now ranks as the fourth highest-grossing animated movie of all-time, behind “Frozen” ($1.29 billion), “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($1.36 billion) and “Frozen II” ($1.45 billion). The “Frozen” franchise was released by Walt Disney Animation Studios, which shares a parent company with Pixar, while “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was produced by Illumination and Universal. Expect “Inside Out 2” to keep climbing up the charts, shattering records as it ascends.
Domestically, “Inside Out 2” has earned $543.5 million. Its international gross stands at $708 million. The sequel, which follows the emotional life of a teenage girl as she struggles with fitting...

Disney and Pixar's "Inside Out 2" remains the feel good box office story of the year. After the first half of 2024 made it feel like the sky was falling, with ticket sales coming in far below 2023 levels, this animated sequel arrived to save the day. On its fourth weekend in theaters, despite heavy competition from Gru and the Minions, Pixar's latest has made its way into the history books as one of the 25 highest-grossing movies of all time. What's most impressive is that the movie still has a lot of gas left in the tank.
Even though "Despicable Me 4" had a record-setting, chart-topping debut of $75 million domestically over the weekend (and $122.6 million across its full five-day Fourth of July opening), "Inside Out 2" managed to hold onto the number two spot with an estimated $30 million domestic haul. It dropped just 48% from the previous weekend despite a new, family-friendly animated film entering the marketplace.

The other night I was having dinner with a couple of industry veterans, both Oscar voters, who told me they had been talking to a top producer-financier who had seen two big studio movies coming out later in the year and both were fantastic.
The producer very enthusiastically praised Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, said Paul Mescal was terrific and Denzel Washington extraordinary in it. He also saw the new Robert Zemeckis film Here, which stars and de-ages Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, also reuniting them from the 1994 Zemeckis film Forrest Gump. Both that one and Scott’s 2000 Gladiator took Best Picture and now it appears both veteran directors will be back in the race — big time. Scott still has yet to win an Oscar, having been overlooked four times in the director race.

Disney is back to being the unquestioned champion of the box office as "Inside Out 2" has crossed a hugely impressive milestone. Pixar's latest animated hit has sailed past the $1 billion mark globally, becoming the first movie of 2024 to do so. It is also the first movie to do so since "Barbie" did it at the beginning of August last year. After a rough start to the year, it looks like things are finally turning around for theaters with the help of this animated juggernaut.
Director Kelsey Mann's "Inside Out 2" has taken in $469.3 million domestically to go with $545.5 million internationally for a grand total of $1.01 billion worldwide to date. That includes $57.4 million from its most recent weekend in North America, with Pixar's animated sequel topping the charts for a third weekend in a row. "A Quiet Place: Day One" opened with a very solid $53 million, but had to settle for second place.

On the cusp of July, a 2024 movie has finally joined the One Billion Club.
Disney/Pixar's Inside Out 2 opened strong when it arrived in theatres on June 14, and has performed consistently well over the past couple of weeks. Now, the critically-acclaimed animated sequel has officially become the first movie of 2024 to pass the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
After 19 days on general release, Inside Out 2 has grossed $469.3 million in North America and $545.5 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $1.015 billion. It has now become one of 11 animated films in history to pass this milestone (eight of which are Disney titles), and is the fastest to do so.

Talk about a mood booster. Disney and Pixar’s emotion-laden “Inside Out 2” is the first film of the year to hit $1 billion at the global box office.

When “Inside Out 2” opened in theaters on June 14, the film shattered expectations with $151 million domestically and overtook “Dune: Part 2” ($711 million) as the biggest opening of the year. It was also the first movie since last July’s “Barbie” ($162 million) to debut above $100 million. Since then, the second “Inside Out” has retained the top spot on box office charts for three consecutive weekends and became the highest-grossing movie domestically and globally of 2024. Disney had a pretty rough year at the box office in 2023, suffering huge flops with films like "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" and "The Marvels." But things are looking up as we enter the second half of 2024, as "Inside Out 2" has already become the highest-grossing movie of the year, dethroning "Dune: Part Two" to take the crown in a mere nine days. In the process, it has managed to accomplish something that no movie has accomplished since 2019 when "Avengers: Endgame" hit theaters en route to becoming (for a time) the biggest movie in history.
Director Kelsey Mann's "Inside Out 2" cleared $101 million domestically in its second weekend, dropping just 35% after its record-breaking opening. It is now just the seventh movie in history to make at least $100 million on its second weekend in theaters. The last time that happened? When "Endgame" pulled in an astonishing $114.7 million on...

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new 2024 box office champion. After less than two weeks, Disney's "Inside Out 2" has managed to outgross every other movie released this year so far, overtaking Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two" ($711.8 million) to take the crown. The only question now is just how high Pixar's latest can fly.
Director Kelsey Mann's "Inside Out 2" took in an absolutely ridiculous $100 million in its second weekend domestically, dropping just 35% from its record-breaking $154.2 million debut. Pixar's latest also pulled in a stellar $164.4 million overseas in its second frame. That brings the movie's running total to $724.3 million and counting. That number includes $355.1 million from domestic ticket sales. This is to take nothing away from "Dune: Part Two," which made $282.1 million domestically and $429.7 million internationally, coming in well above expectations. It's just no longer the king of the hill.

Inside Out 2’s box office takings streak past Dune: Part Two globally, putting Pixar’s sequel on track to the hallowed $1bn mark.
The good news for cinema owners continued this weekend, as Pixar’s follow-up to 2015 classic Inside Out easily leapfrogged Dune: Part Two to become the highest-grossing film of 2024 globally.
Inside Out 2 – already the largest opening of the year in the US – fell just 35% there in its second week of release, with domestic takings now hovering around the $355m mark. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that makes it the best hold for a film opening to $150m or more in history.
Globally, meanwhile, the film’s total now stands at $724m – easily surpassing Dune: Part Two's previous record of $711m after almost doubling its take in its first weekend.

Disney and Pixar have finally emerged from a hole dug by a series of box office flops! Inside Out 2 is dominating the box office and claiming a 2024 record!
Variety reports that Inside Out 2, in its second week in theaters, has now reached over $285M domestically. The opening week saw the sequel to one of Pixar’s best films rakes in around $250M.
However, the totals are still falling short (at the time of writing) of the $90M+ that The Super Mario Bros. Movie claimed last year. The long-awaited sequel did manage to outperform Dune: Part Two by a few million dollars.
Regardless, it’s good news for the animated movie genre! The good fortune may also be needed for Disney/Pixar to reevaluate its approach to future projects.

Inside Out 2 continues dominating the box office in its second weekend, with Deadline reporting that the movie is looking at a $98 million weekend – some say it could even break $100 million. This would make it the highest grossing second weekend for an animated film of all time, after The Super Mario Bros Movie’s $92 million second weekend last year. Certainly, the animated sequel is shaping up to be one of Pixar’s biggest hits ever, which is quite the coup for a studio that everyone thought was on the downslide just a few months ago after a series of underperformers like Lightyear, Elemental, and more.
Meanwhile, Bad Boys: Ride or Die is holding on to second place with an $18 million-plus third weekend. The movie is turning out to be a major moneymaker for Sony, with it looking to end as the second-highest-grossing Bad Boys movie of all time, just below...

Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” (Disney) grossed $254 million in its first seven days in U.S. and Canadian theaters. By as early as Saturday, it will best “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.) as 2024’s biggest success, and by Sunday, the film should reach at least $315 million.
The surprisingly strong animated sequel (top industry projections gave it a shot at $300 million) now looks certain to gross at least $500 million for its run. That would make it the sixth to do so since theaters reopened.
Buttressed by summer vacation and the mid-week Juneteenth holiday, the seven-day total is $14 million better than “Super Mario Bros.,” and stunningly only $4 million below “Barbie.” But at this point, odds are against “Inside Out 2” equaling “Mario” ($574 million), much less reaching “Barbie” ($636 million). Embarrassed? Hardly. Sad and fearful? No way. Joyous? Absolutely. That was the vibe on the morning of June 17 when Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman cracked open the champagne to toast those who had worked on the making and marketing of Inside Out 2, which is the year’s first box office blockbuster. “It’s been a while since we did this,” says one person attending the celebration on Disney’s Burbank lot, in reference to rough times for the once-invincible Pixar, where Pete Docter also arranged a toast.
For its part, Pixar delivered a film that has won over both critics and audiences in continuing the story of Riley, who is now 13 and must contend with a new crew of emotions invading her head in addition to the old standbys, led by Joy (Amy Poehler). And Disney orchestrated a marketing campaign that stayed on message and resonated with moviegoers around the globe.

The American box office needed a win, and my word, did it get one with "Inside Out 2." The latest film from Pixar had a record-breaking weekend, pulling in nearly $295 million globally and marking the best opening weekend ever for an animated film. That number includes $154.2 million domestically, which means director Kelsey Mann now holds the record for the biggest opening weekend ever for a feature directorial debut. In short, it was a home run for Disney and Pixar. It's also one that comes with an important lesson that could easily be ignored by the powers that be: Pixar needs to invest in original ideas now more than ever.
Given the insanely huge opening weekend, positive reviews, and instantly strong word of mouth from audiences, "Inside Out 2" now has a real shot at becoming the biggest movie of 2024 overall and a likely $1 billion global grosser, assuming it doesn't fall...

Yorgos Lanthimos’ latest film Kinds of Kindness debuted at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival following Oscars buzz for the director’s film Poor Things. The filmmaker’s last project to premiere at the French festival was The Killing of a Sacred Deer starring Nicole Kidman, Barry G. Kinds of Kindness marks reunions with Emma Stone, Joe Alwyn, Margaret Qualley and Willem Dafoe for the director. It was a little touch and go during the first couple of years of the pandemic, but it feels relatively safe to say that Pixar is back. Director Kelsey Mann's "Inside Out 2" hit theaters this past weekend and delivered a massive, most welcome boon to the box office with record-breaking $295 million global opening. It ranks as the biggest global opening ever for an animated film. That number includes an estimated $155 million domestically, which is the second-biggest domestic opening for an animated movie ever behind only 2018's "Incredibles 2" ($182.6 million). It also means that Mann has earned his place in cinema history as the film secured another pretty impressive record over the weekend.
While Mann has been working at Pixar for more than a decade, "Inside Out 2" serves as his feature directorial debut. That being the case, that $155 million number is very important as it means Mann now...

Despite the emotional turmoil of growing up, it would seem little Riley of the Inside Out flicks is living her best life. She’s certainly bringing a much needed win to Pixar Animation Studios. After what has undeniably been a rough post-covid era for the house of Woody, Buzz, Coco, and so many other beloved animated characters, the return of Amy Poehler’s Joy had no sadness in sight when Inside Out 2 opened to $155 million this past weekend.
Debuting to the second best animated opening day of all-time with $62 million—behind only another Pixar sequel, 2018’s Incredibles 2—the film went on to gross the second best weekend ever in animation, again behind Pixar’s Brad Bird-directed superhero sequel. This debut is also above last year’s animated juggernaut, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It’s in fact the best opening of any movie since Barbie last July.

Where to begin in describing the emotions that Hollywood and theater owners — not to mention Pixar and its parent company Disney — are likely feeling over the stunning start of Inside Out 2 at the box office. (Hint: Sadness isn’t one of them.)
In a joyous comeback for Pixar, the tentpole opened to a massive $155 million domestically over Father’s Day weekend — well ahead of an expected $90 million — to secure the second-biggest animated launch of all time for a three-day weekend, not adjusted for inflation. It also did historic business overseas, where it opened to a record $140 million for a global total of $295 million, the biggest opening of all time for an animated film in like-for-like markets when accounting for exchange rates.
Fellow Pixar sequel Incredibles 2 is the crown-holder for top animated domestic opening ($182.7 million). That was previously followed by Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie...

The Annecy Animation Festival, the most important eight days of the year for the global animation industry, wraps up tonight, so we’re looking back at 10 themes that dominated the dialogue around this year’s event.
Annecy is Hollywood’s Favorite Animation Showcase
In interviews held before this year’s festival, several representatives from Hollywood studios, speaking on background, told us that Annecy has now replaced Comic-Con as their most important promotional event of the year for animation.
During a backstage interview with Variety at a “Transformers: One” panel, festival artistic director Marcel Jean explained that building that reputation wasn’t a quick or easy process. “It’s a long-term work to convince the studios that Annecy is a place to be for them,” he said. “I think we are building a very strong relationship with Paramount, and it’s the same with most of the studios now.”

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have emerged as quite the duo in recent years. The director and actress managed to turn both "The Favourite" and "Poor Things" into rare, original box office hits that also went on to garner some major awards season love. Now, they're back together again with another dark comedy in the form of "Kinds of Kindness," which is rolling out in select theaters next weekend before expanding nationwide in the coming weeks. The question is, can Lanthimos and Stone pull off a hat trick and go three for three?
Disney's Searchlight Pictures is making a couple of wise decisions regarding "Kinds of Kindness." For one, it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to build some buzz, with Jesse Plemons winning Best Actor for his work in the film. That has teed up the ball for a limited release next weekend, with Lanthimos' latest work playing in...

Move out of the way, Sadness: “Inside Out 2” just scored the biggest box office previews of 2024.
Disney and Pixar’s latest animated outing grossed $13 million in Thursday previews domestically, plus $22.3 million internationally. The family-friendly sequel is projected to launch between $80 million and $90 million this weekend.
A debut on the higher end would give “Inside Out 2” the biggest opening of the year. Warner Bros. currently holds the top two spots of 2024 with “Dune: Part Two” at $82.5 million and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” at $80 million.
For reference, “Inside Out 2’s” $13 million in domestic box office previews outpaced last year’s “The Little Mermaid” ($10.3 million), “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($10.8 million) and “Toy Story 4” ($12 million). It falls a bit short of recent animated superhero sequels like “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” ($17.4 million) and “Incredibles 2” ($18.5 million).
