“Good Fortune” has encountered some bad luck. Writer-director Aziz Ansari’s original comic feature, starring himself, Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen, has shut down production amid the ongoing Writers Guild Association strike. Lionsgate made the call Thursday, and all parties are hoping that production will resume at a later date.
According to sources familiar with the film, who also confirmed the shutdown, the production had been operating according to strike rules, with Ansari directing but not writing any additional material or scenes. Picketers previously interrupted production on May 16 and May 17 while it attempted to shoot in Koreatown. While several films have been delayed due to the strike, most notably Marvel’s “Blade,” Lionsgate’s “Good Fortune” is the first studio theatrical that was halted midfilming.

Lionsgate will release Aziz Ansari’s directorial debut, an original comedy titled “Good Fortune” that will star Ansari alongside Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen.
Plot details are currently secret, but the film has been greenlit with principal photography beginning next month in Los Angeles. Along with starring in the film and producing it, Ansari will produce alongside Anthony Katagas and Alan Young.
Lionsgate will launch overseas sales at the Cannes Film Festival.
Lionsgate Film Group co-chair Joe Drake remarked: “We have indeed found good fortune with this film. We love the script and believe strongly in Aziz as both a performer and a director. And when you add in Seth and Keanu – two incredible world-class talents — toplining alongside Aziz, this has the potential to be a very special film for us. We moved quickly to land this project once it was available.”
At Lionsgate, the film will be overseen by Brady Fujikawa and Jon Humphrey.

All three seasons of the acclaimed Israeli drama Shtisel, Nickelodeon sitcom Big Time Rush and Oscar winner Brokeback Mountain are among the titles leaving Netflix in March 2023.
Shtisel, which follows a Haredi family living in an ultra-Orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem as they deal with love, loss and daily life, was a hit on Israel’s Yes network, drawing in viewers and awards locally. The series also seemed to attract an audience in the U.S. once it started streaming on Netflix. All three seasons are set to exit Netflix on March 24.
The next day, fans of the Nickelodeon sitcom Big Time Rush, which launched the band of the same name, will have to bid farewell to watching the bandmembers’ fictional antics from 2009 to 2013 on Netflix, just as the group recently reunited.

March marks the change in seasons and in Netflix’s lineup. Several popular and/or critically acclaimed series are leaving the streamer this month.
Among them are “Lee Daniels’ The Butler,” starring Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, a Black butler who worked in the White House for 50 years. Oprah Winfrey plays his wife Gloria. The star-studded supporting cast, which was nominated for a SAG Award, includes Mariah Carey, John Cusack, Jane Fonda, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Lenny Kravitz, James Marsden, David Oyelowo, Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Redgrave, Alan Rickman, Liev Schreiber, and Robin Williams.
The gay cowboy movie “Brokeback Mountain” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger is also leaving Netflix. At the 78th Annual Academy Awards in 2006, the film was lost Best Picture to “Crash” but won Best Director (Ang Lee), Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score. (It entered with the most nominations — 8 — and tied for most won — 3.)

Summer is about to finally, blessedly be in full swing. And to honor the occasion, Hulu is showing up big with its list of new releases for June 2022.
Hulu is bringing two major TV titles to its stream this month. The first is The Orville: New Horizons on June 2. Seth MacFarlane’s sci-fi/comedy started as a simple Star Trek parody on Fox before blossoming into its own entirely sincere space adventuring beast. Now “New Horizons” promises to be a fresh start for the series on Hulu. Next up is Only Murders in the Building season 2 on June 28. Season 1 of this Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-starring series was a big hit. Let’s see if our favorite podcasters can pull it off once again.

While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.
Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.
Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.
That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.
In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.

Critics are already dishing out praise for the latest block of episodes of The Karate Kid spinoff, which had its premiere date bumped up by a week. The first month of a new year is a good time to make a new impression. And that’s just what Netflix seems set on doing with its list of new releases for January 2021.
The streamer is coming out strong with a third season of Cobra Kai, formerly of YouTube Premium. The next installment in Daniel Larusso and Johnny Lawrence’s story is set to arrive…eventually. Netflix has not unveiled a released date yet but it will be during this month. While Cobra Kai is the highlight among Netflix’ original series, it’s not the only one by a long shot. Last year’s fun Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous returns for a second season on Jan. 22 and it will be accompanied by Fate: The Winx Saga. Also, if you’re a fan of things that will one day be .gif’ed to death, the Nicolas Cage-hosted History of Swear Words drops on Jan.

Fans may be waiting a little longer than expected before joining [Spider-Man} on another adventure, with a new report claiming that production on Spider-Man 3 has been delayed until winter of 2021. This means that filming will begin in either January or February next year, and while the delay is not too surprising, it is a far cry from the initial plan of a production start in July 2020. Production was then rumored to begin this month, but evidently that has not turned out to be the case.
Originally, Spider-Man 3 was set for a release date of July 16, 2021, as part of the much-anticipated Phase 4 of the McU. Due to the ongoing global circumstances, the entire Phase has now been dramatically reshuffled as a result of Black Widow being delayed several times with the movie now due for release on November 6. The plan is to now have Spider-Man 3 swing into UK and US cinemas on November 5, 2021, though whether this potential delay in production affects this remains to be seen.

Fans have been awaiting the arrival of a movie based on the popular video game franchise Uncharted for what seems like an eternity. With the current global situation having brought Hollywood to a standstill the upcoming adaptation starring Tom Holland starring Nathan Drake has once again been delayed, but, worry not, as a new deepfake video has been created to bring you the Uncharted movie you have been waiting for. Well, maybe not quite that, but it's all you're going to get for now. The video superimposes actor Nathan Fillion's face onto the body of Nathan Drake in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and the results are equal parts impressive, and uncomfortably uncanny.
The video, which has been put together by YouTube deepfaker Jarkan, uses a late-game cut scene from the fourth game in the Uncharted franchise and gives many fans what they have always wanted, Firefly star Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake.

Stranger Things season 4 will be here at some point this year, but Netflix is keeping things mysterious, as usual. The streaming service was kind enough, however, to release another teaser video that showcases the cast who are coming back for the new season. What's more, we've learned that Brett Gelman, who we met in season 3, has been promoted to series regular. So we haven't seen the last of Murray.
Last month, we got the first Stranger Things Season 4 teaser. Now we get the table read video featuring VHS footage, which appears to be shot on actual tape, of the cast all gathered together for a table read. Everyone looks quite happy to be together. It doesn't reveal much in...

“Venom” director Ruben Fleischer will likely direct “Uncharted,” the long-gestating, oft-delayed adaptation of the popular video game of the same name.
There’s no deal in place and Fleischer is said to be atop a list of other candidates being considered by Sony Pictures, but insiders say the job is his if he wants it. “Uncharted” is set to star Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.
The film has had a devil of a time keeping filmmakers. Six directors have previously been tapped for the project before taking the exit ramp — a collection of auteurs that includes the likes of David O. Russell, “Limitless'” Neil Burger and “A Night at the Museum’s” Shawn Levy. “Bumblebee’s” Travis Knight was the most recent director attached, but he left when production needed to be pushed back because of Holland’s Spider-Man schedule.

The zombies have evolved in “Zombieland: Double Tap”; the comedy not so much. But that’s Ok, because Ruben Fleischer’s 2009 breakout hit — which gobbled up $75.6 million in a genre fast approaching its pop-culture saturation point — was already a few steps ahead of the curve: Its central quartet actually knew they were living in a walking-dead movie and were therefore armed to defend themselves against a breed of modern horror baddies to which previous film characters had been frustratingly slow to adapt.
Even zom-com classic “Shaun of the Dead” recycled the drawn-out routine where characters take a long time to catch on to the fact that an infected loved one is gradually transforming into a flesh-eater, too. “Zombieland,” by contrast, was blessedly meta — and downright irreverent about it — taking place it a world where the idea of zombies was already widespread, giving its ensemble a Darwinian advantage for the termination of the species.

Composer Ludwig Goransson is moving from one major comic book movie to another. Goransson recently composed the original score for Marvel's Black Panther, which isn't just the biggest hit of the year so far, but it's one of the biggest superhero movies ever. Now, Sony has tapped the Swedish composer to score the soundtrack for their upcoming Venom movie, which stars Tom Hardy in the titular role. Maybe a little bit of that Black Panther magic will rub off.
Venom will reunite Ludwig Goransson with director Ruben Fleischer, who directed Venom and is probably best known for his work on Zombieland. The two worked together previously on the 2011 comedy 30 Minutes or Less, which starred Jesse Eisenberg and Aziz Ansari. Goransson has also worked on movies like Death Wish and Central Intelligence, in addition to two previous collaborations with Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, scoring both Fruitvale Station and Creed.

It has been one helluva summer for R-rated comedies with some big successes ("The Hangover Part II," "Bridesmaids," "Horrible Bosses") and some notable misses ("The Change-Up," "30 Minutes Or Less") and Jason Bateman has been on the receiving end of both. He was part of the ensemble who off their employers in 'Bosses' but opposite Ryan Reynolds, the duo couldn't compel audiences to come out to their bawdy body switching comedy. But Bateman is a savvy, smart guy who has certainly been around the industry for a long time, and now ready to move into producing, he has smartly snagged one of the season’s biggest breakout stars to co-star with him in yet another high concept laffer.
Melissa McCarthy—who walked away with pretty much every scene she had in “Bridesmaids”—will team with Bateman for “ID Theft” which he will also produce.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes fended off an onslaught of four new nationwide releases to top the weekend box office again. The Help won the debut dust-up, blind-siding a tepid Final Destination 5, while 30 Minutes or Less and Glee The 3D Concert Movie floundered. Descending 50 percent, Rise of the Planet of the Apes packed an estimated $27.5 million. Though steep, the sci-fi thriller's second weekend slide was less severe than Planet of the Apes (2001), I, Robot, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and X-Men: First Class, among comparable titles. With a $104.9 million haul in ten days, Rise is tracking ahead of fellow 20th Century Fox prequel/reboot X-Men: First Class ($98 million) and has out-grossed most of its key comps through the same point, aside from the last Planet remake's $123.7 million (or $174.2 million normalized for ticket-price inflation). The Help picked up an estimated $25.5 million on approximately 3,100 screens at 2,534 locations, exceeding...

What was Sony thinking? Like predecessors Superbad ($121.5 million domestic B.O.) and Pineapple Express ($87.3 million), raunchy comedy 30 Minutes or Less, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari and Danny McBride, looked to be building some summer bad-boy buzz until online needles rattled over a potentially devastating controversy. Anthony D'Alessandro has more:
Instantly, the set-up of 30 Minutes, which looked like a heightened version of Neil Simon’s Seems Like Old Times, took on a new light when the family of Brian Wells, a late Pennsylvania pizza man who met his fate after being coerced to rob a bank as a bomb hostage, revealed that the 30 Minutes filmmakers were satirizing their real tragedy. Editor's Note: Ad Fidelity is a new movie review feature that compares the core elements of a movie's marketing campaign with the reality of what's on screen. The purpose is to show whether or not a movie lives up to the promises of its advertising and to shed light on a movie's potential long-term playability. Sony/Columbia's marketing campaign for 30 Minutes or Less has focused on the outrageous circumstances surrounding the central bank robbery, the director's well-regarded prior credit (Zombieland) and the comedic interactions between the four lead actors. Here's how the movie aligns with those expectations: Marketing: With a bomb strapped to his chest by some incompetent criminals, a pizza delivery boy (Jesse Eisenberg) recruits his ex-best friend (Aziz Ansari) to assist in a bank robbery.Reality: 30 Minutes or Less's actual story closely follows the one detailed in previews, with Eisenberg's character stuck with the bomb for the vast majority of the movie's runtime.

A red band trailer has arrived giving us our first look at "30 Minutes or Less," director Ruben Fleischer's R-rated comedy follow-up to "Zombieland"--and can we say we want a little bit more? Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Aziz Ansari, Danny McBride, Nick Swardson and Michael Peña, the film centers on two white trash fledgling criminals (McBride and his lapdog lieutenant Swardson) who kidnap a slacker pizza delivery driver (Eisenberg) and force him — by ticking bomb — to rob a bank. Ansari plays Chet, the history teacher best friend of Eisenberg’s character who has his shit together, but gets roped into…...
