Episode 200 deserved much more care.
pedrohfpires6 January 2022
I sympathize with James being a father and choosing to have more time with his kids and all that. I know he needs the sponsors, I don't mind that. Just skip the first minute. And I know he has to keep doing these to make ends meet.

But this was episode 200. It deserved much more. We've been following and supporting him for years and it was supposed to be an special occasion. Hell, he did an epic "fear and loathing in las vegas" parody episode in the same season. They took months to do that one. Why not make that his episode 200? It would have showed that he still cared about this.

I'm glad he's still doing the angry nerd but in a perfect world, it would be better to do these occasionally, so he would have more time to do the episodes property and with more quality.

About the episode: 3 videos. Don't even bother watching the first two ones. They're not funny and a mix of old clips and new clips (the new ones are boring btw). All of this encompassed by a story that the angry nerd bought LJN and tried to remake back to the future for the NES. This story is also boring and uninspired. He only acts with another guy who is supposed to be the game developer who has 0 acting skills or humor.

The third one is actually funny. The aerosmith references and parody songs are great. I guess he was more inspired that day and we get a glimpse of james' passion once again. But splitting it into 3 parts was cruel. Only to get 3 sponsor messages. Well, a man's gotta eat I suppose.

Disappointing
rexressel3 January 2022
What a letdown. I can understand showing the previous LJN games the Nerd has played via old clips but some clips just kept going for almost a minute. I liked them but it feels like they tried to show as much archive footage as possible to stretch the runtime. Also, if you're gonna make it as long as possible why not just combine the three parts? All three videos where like 25 minutes, they could've just combined that into one video if they wanted to make it so long that badly.

Also, ALL three parts started with a sponsorship video. Really?? I feel like for the last 2-3 years every damn AVGN episode has started with a sponsored ad, they really couldn't make an exception for the 200th episode? Come on man...

I love the AVGN but I think it's time to just stop. James has been doing this since 2004 and he has a family now. Every show has a point where the episodes start to become worse and worse, and the fact that episode 200 has sponsored ads on all three parts and is 50% clip shows makes it obvious that the AVGN is now at this point.

Not a Good Episode like I Tried Telling Myself
justinagable-987059 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Here is the Nerd reviewing all LJN games. This is his forte. It was basic with the Nerd reviewing video games, without too much overdrawn skits (unlike "Shrek" & "Las Vegas") Also, it was nice learning about the history and the entire library of LJN. This episode is split into three parts (1 - Movie Games, 2 - Sports & Marvel Games, & 3 - Wrestling & Miscellaneous Games). I did like the twist of how the Nerd now owns the LJN trademark. The Nerd gets one of his Screenwave assistants to develop a new Back to the Future game, and it turned out to be a disaster. I do have to say that it wasn't too drawn out, and that did help make this episode better than the others from the same season. I know a lot of people hated this episode, but Episode 100 (ROB) was disliked when it came out as well. I myself don't mind clip shows. I myself enjoyed it when "The Simpsons" and "Malcolm in the Middle" did it.

(DISCLAIMER: This was the original review in December 2021. The next part is my added portion as of February 15th, 2022)

Everything said, I haven't went back to rewatch this three parter again. That's because I did not enjoy it much in retrospect. I liked the premise of the AVGN doing an LJN marathon. Clip shows are good when done right. The setup of it was good. It did remind me of an old episode. I was unhappy about the 2021 season of AVGN. The overdrawn skit episodes were terrible. Those Screenwave actors feel like props, and not engaging characters. I started enjoying the season when James went back to the basics & reviewed the Commodore 64. So, the LJN library was very exciting for me. My biggest problem with this special was that James seemed clearly burned out & lost his charm. I saw that he lost track of the game numbering farther into the special. I was disappointed with the execution. If James didn't clearly have the burnout, this episode would have been great. Even though this episode was better than the skit-heavy ones (such as "Shrek" & "Las Vegas") and the lazy rushed ones (such as "Pac-Man 2"), I wouldn't consider this episode to be one of James' finest, but not his worst either.

As a fan of the AVGN series, this is very difficult to come to terms with this. I think Irate Gamer is better than last year's season of AVGN. I'd take Wisseau-style acting of Chris Bores, every character being played by Chris Bores, & the ludicrously stupid storylines over watching a series that has completely lost its soul. For the future, James should cancel the AVGN series since it seems clear that his burnout is getting the best of him. On the other hand, James could follow the route of "SpongeBob SquarePants" and try reinventing the charm of the earlier seasons. He can focus more on the games he's reviewing themselves and get rid of all the pointless skits from these Screenwave assistants. I think rehiring Mike Matei & Kyle Justin can help with that since they knew the show during its golden years. I'm fine if Screenwave stays for filming and editing purposes, but these people shouldn't act and contribute heavily to the plot.

Dud of a milestone episode
MuhReviewz16 December 2021
I don't give a 1 star review lightly. This episode was pretty much been given a year of build. All year James Rolfe would constantly mention how we are "almost to episode 200".

On his podcast, James even made mention of hard he was working on it and made reference to how long it was and how it would be broken up into 3 parts because it was so long. Sounds pretty epic!

Well, its so long because like 70% of it is a clip show. This really could have been one decent half hour episode of even the slightest bit of effort was put into it.

Instead, with AVGN Episode 200 we witness a microcosm of what the series has become the last few years. Lazy, unfunny, unimaginative, stale and simply living off the fumes of a legacy created from being an early YouTube sensation.

Seeing those old clips again were sad in a way, too. You can hear how lively and spontaneous James used to be when playing the Nerd. Now he is just sitting on a couch doing the same monotone phrases, forced fake anger and barely commits to character like he once did. During the clip show, the comparisons were night and day.

All that said, the series is dead and there's no reviving it. The jokes are old. The concept is dated. The writer and lead actor lost his passion for the series. It's YouTube's version of The Simpsons or Family Guy and like them will probably be around forever just because there's some level on name value left in AVGN.

So much buildup and masterbatory self-reverential "Wow! -We- made it to 200 episodes", weak, contrived AVGN "lore" and all... so disappointing, but not surprising.
therskybznuiss13 December 2021
Read my title - it says it all. Though the fact that the hyped to crap '200th episode' starts with a 'sponsered by' really shows you where James Rolfe's priorities are - that he has no love left for the series and that he's doing it for the $$$ at this point, has no love for, and no fun making the series...

He dosen't even do the writing. F___ Screenwave and F___ Cinemassacre.

I owe James this -one- la st view for all of those early years of good Youtube times, but unlike the early episodes, I have and will not watch/rewatch any of the newer (eg. Last 3 years) of Cinemassacre Content.

Hot garbage.
robdamanii9 December 2021
It's a clip show. They recorded maybe 4 minutes of actual new content and made a clip show out of it with a 2 minute ad read in the beginning for padding.

Also setting up to sell a game in one of the future episodes as confirmed by Justing Silverman on the slobwave podcast.

Avgn has lost his touch for years but this is the nailing point.
vivifan2 January 2022
Avgn is a great guy. I'm pretty sure he is and his reviews were always great to me because not only were funny but informative as well as making sense in what he was talking about. I have been watching his content since I was. Young teenager and now as an adult. It's been nearly 15 years since I started watching him to. His content started going down for years around say 2015 or so. But review is proof that he is running out of ideas and he is doing it to help his family which is fair. But regardless this review was hot garbage, the writing in it is so forced and he is trying way to hard to be funny, it was anoyying if anything and the review didn't much to it. Just a dull, flat, boring, waste of time. I still like going back to his early content say 2006 to 2013 ish. But I do think avgn needs to step his game up or if not needs to get a game over if he is going to continue with these episodes. Not worth the watch and very disappointing.

Disappointing garbage!
ninjacakestudios14 May 2022
The concept is a good concept for the 200th episode. The execution is alright. I hate that a decent amount is just a clip show of older episodes, but when he talks about games he hasn't before, it's alright. But as a milestone episode, it completely falls on its face. This is such a rushed episode. You can tell they wanted to finish this before the end of the year, when they really shouldn't have. They should have taken more time to truly make this more special. The polar opposite of this is Scott the Woz Episode 200, Borderline Forever. Scott simply took an extended break at the beginning of 2021 then took an extra month or so April-May of 2021 to make the episode. For Scott, it was done when it was done, and Borderline Forever was awesome! Fantastic original songs, a fun plot about a staple of his videos, an enjoyable 20 minute review segment about all of Nintendos main systems, insane special effects for a YouTube video, hilarious cameos, brilliant original compositions, and a clear passion for the project. AVGN 200 is embarrassing lame. Scotts 200th episode had his friends fighting the Green Bay Packers with a dope ass cover of his song. AVGN had a shitty looking encounter with himself in the lamest climax ever. It's so ironic to me that this is the lowest rated AVGN episode. It isn't exactly horrible, but as the 200th episode, it is such a letdown.

Disappointment at best
thejellyfishalfred11 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is a huge letdown for me, since this is the big 200th episode of avgn. For me, I think modern avgn is a mixed bag, it's not good but not necessarily bad. The thing that I find wrong with this episode is that it is not interesting in the slightest. It feels like he thought 'well if I reviews LJN games, why don't i just make my 200th episode about playing every LJN game?' I don't like the idea because he puts all the games in one big episode, even though he could just make regular episodes for each game he didn't already cover before. His 100th episode didnt need this to be a good time, neither did the 10 year anniversary episode.
