Far fewer directors in Australia get the chance to make their second feature, or more, than the global average.
According to a new, ground-breaking study of worldwide trends by UK analyst Stephen Follows, while 63.5 per cent of directors have one feature film credit, 36.5 per cent made a second feature.
Just 8.6 per cent directed more than five and only 0.1 per cent have more than 20 feature credits.
By comparison, Screen Australia’s most recent research found 62 per cent of directors had one credit in the five years to June 2017 and 44 of the 144 surveyed – 19 per cent – had made a second feature.
Broken down by gender, that equated to 42 male directors (22 per cent) and just two women (6 per cent). Some 8 per cent had three credits, 4 per cent had four and 7 per cent had 5-plus.

Jeremy Sims (L) with Sam Neill on the set of ‘Rams’ (Photo credit: Merlyn Moon).
Jeremy Sims was promoting his drama Last Cab to Darwin on the international film festival circuit in 2015 when he noticed Icelandic film Hrútar featured in nearly every program.
His curiosity piqued, he watched writer-director Grímur Hákonarson’s film – the tale of two warring brothers, both sheep farmers – at the Busan festival in Korea, and was hugely impressed. The same year it won best film at Un Certain Regard in Cannes.
So it was a fortuitous coincidence when one of the producers, Wbmc’s Aidan O’Bryan rang his agent earlier this year to ask if he would direct a re-imagining of the film entitled Rams after acquiring the adaptation rights.
Sims loved the screenplay by Western Australian-born writer Jules Duncan, which is a complete reinterpretation of the original, and readily accepted the offer. Produced by O’Bryan and Janelle Landers,...

A stylish piece of sci-fi pulp fiction made with a sense of scale that belies its indie budget, the sophomore feature from Aussie filmmaker Ben C. Lucas consolidates the promise he showed in his debut, 2010's Wasted on the Young. That film was a memorable dissection of high school horrors set in the glass mansions of Perth, Australia's mining-enriched Western capital, with a final act that was a little too dense for its own good. OtherLife likewise boasts a non-linear structure that is just explicable enough until one too many late reversals, though its puzzles could prove catnip to genre...

Australian actress Georgina Haig has scored the key role of Queen Elsa of Arendelle, the icy powered character from Disney's "Frozen," in the upcoming fourth season of ABC's "Once Upon a Time". The character was previously teased in the third season finale.

Australian-Singapore horror film Bait 3D has bombed at the box office, grossing less than $370,000 in its opening weekend.
The film, about sharks attacking a group of people trapped in a supermarket and car park flooded by a tsunami, grossed just $365,187 across 283 screens for a screen average of $1290. It is one of the worst recent performances by an Australian film in wide release.
Distributor Paramount also had a poor result with teen drama Wasted on the Young, which grossed $52,907 across 54 screens in its opening weekend of March 2011 (for a screen average $979). Fox's Matching Jack opened with $261,505 across 186 screens (for a screen average of $1405) in September 2010 and back in 2008, Disney's $6 million teen drama Hey Hey It's Esther Blueburger took $302,033 across 134 screens (for a screen average of $2253).

Janet Pierson, the producer of the SXSW Film Conference and Festival, will make her first visit to Australia in August, attending a Screen Australia forum where she will talk about the event. In 2012, the influential festival screened 270 films (including 132 features) and attracted an audience of more than 68,000. She told If Magazine about her views on the Australian industry and the changing role of the festival.
If Magazine: How does Australian screen content compare to the Us and other territories? Have you noticed particular strengths or weaknesses that should be addressed, or particular themes?
Janet Pierson: SXSW Film always pays close attention to Australian films. It's hard to reduce "Australian film" to a specific set of themes, but I would say that again and again we see a fearless, uncompromising sensibility.
There's definitely a real wave of fascinating, edgy filmmakers coming from the region. Genre films are incredibly strong, and filmmakers,...

Australians are big fans of local screen content . they.re just not big fans of paying to watch it. While Screen Australia has previously estimated that Australian films were viewed more than 72 million times last year across multiple platforms, their share of the total box office remains embarrassingly low at less than 4 per cent.
So Screen Australia.s latest research into viewing habits should come as welcome news for an industry desperate to grow its paying audience. What compels someone to go to the cinema, watch a DVD, turn on the TV or download content online? And how can Australian producers use that information?

Chicago – Australian actor Alex Russell has a penchant for exploring the darker sides of the teenage psyche. He made his film debut as a loathsome bully in Ben C. Lucas’ “Wasted on the Young,” before landing a lead role in Josh Trank’s surprise hit, “Chronicle,” about three teens who suddenly acquire superpowers and are excited by the dangerous magnitude of their mysterious abilities.
The dynamic between high school buddies Matt (Russell), Andrew (Dane DeHaan) and Steve (Michael B. Jordan) feels wholly authentic, and Trank finds ingenious ways of fusing in-camera effects with the naturalistic visual style inherent in the found footage genre. Chicagoans who missed the film during its initial theatrical run this year will be able to catch it at midnight June 8th and June 9th at the Music Box Theatre.

Aussie actor Alex Russell has been cast in the upcoming remake of Stephen King's prom night horror story Carrie.
Russell will star alongside Chloe Moretz (Kick Ass, Dark Shadows) and Julianne Moore (The Kids are All Right, Crazy, Stupid, Love) in the remake as Billy Nolan - the same role which kickstarted John Travolta's career in the original 1970s film.
"I'm really, really happy," Russell told If last Saturday, the morning after hearing the news. "I celebrated quite hard last night."
Carrie is the story of a timid girl with telekinetic powers who destroys her hometown after being pushed too far by the school's popular kids on prom night.
Russell, who was seen recently in found footage film Chronicle and last year's Wasted on the Young, will play one of her tormentors. Filming commences in June, with Boys Don't Cry director Kimberly Peirce directing.

The ghost-themed independent feature Muirhouse, written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Tanzeal Rahim from The Media Collective, is one of the Australian films that will be screening in the market at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival.
Muirhouse feels like a film made from "found-footage": shot on location by cinematographer Dan Freene (Wasted on the Young), the film actualizes the real-life horror themes of one of. the most haunted -- reportedly -- homesteads in Australia, The Monte Cristo in Junee, Nsw.
The history of the house is littered with stories of foul play, murder and painful death, all of which are explored with a hand-held camera style reminiscent of The Blair Witch Project.

Ben C. Lucas has been signed to direct The Duelist, a neo-Western developed at Gold Circle Films. According to Variety, Shawn Linden sold the initial spec this past Spring and Lana Shadgett performed recent rewrites.
Lucas directed the 2010 Aussie thriller Wasted on the Young about two brothers left to the mercy of their classmates after a traumatic event at a high school party. The film played several film festivals, including Sydney, Toronto and SXSW, and received middling reviews from both critics and users on Rotten Tomatoes, praised for its impressive visual style and slammed for its incoherent script.
Linden’s wrote The Duelist over four years ago (it was a finalist for the Gotham Screen screenplay contest in 2007), but I got my hands on a July 2011 draft with Shadgett’s revisions. As an obvious disclaimer, details may change in its adaptation to the screen.

Take two talented, young, British-born Gold Coast based filmmakers. Add a double-crossing darkly humorous plot worthy of the Coen Brothers. Sprinkle it with a touch of David Lynch and a generous heap of Hitchcock and you have the spine-tingling suspense thriller Crawl - the mightily impressive feature debut of twin brother movie-makers Paul and Ben China. Crawl headlines Love Serenade actor George Shevtsov as a mysterious Croatian hired to commit murder by a seedy bar owner (Paul Bryant). Georgina Haig (Wasted on the Young) plays the unfortunate young waitress who becomes embroiled in the double-crossing plot when she is taken hostage at her isolated forest residence.

There’s a decidedly oriental tinge to this year’s Gold Coast Film Festival. Jiang Wen’s extremely successful rice-noodle Chinese comedy western Let The Bullets Fly (which had its premiere at the Brisbane International Film Festival – read my review Here) has been chosen as the opening night film and there’s a ‘Cool Japan’ line-up which features the Australian premieres of Makoto Shinkai‘s (Voice of a Distant Star) exquisitely rendered anime Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below - a nostalgic and mystical adventure concerning family loss which firmly places the young director in a league with the laudable likes of manga masters Katsuhiro Ohtomo, Mamoru Oshii and Hayao Miyazaki. On the non-animated front we have the welcome return screenings of Anh Hung Tran‘s Sydney Film festival favourite Norweigan Wood and Takashi Miike‘s kinetic Seven Samurai throwback 13 Assassins. Studio: Paramount
In Ben C. Lucas’ feature debut, the Australian writer and director attempts to add to the recent deluge of strong, serious Aussie thrillers, but his prep school-set flick never reaches beyond anything that’s gone before it. Wasted On The Young introduces us to two very different stepbrothers, geeky cute Darren (Oliver Ackland) and big man on campus Zack (Alex Russell). The boys have nothing in common besides their mutual membership on their upscale high school’s swim team and the looming, tricked out mansion they live in with no parental supervision. When Zack throws a roaring party, things spiral out of control amidst a haze of driving techno beats, flowing booze, and piles of cocaine. Darren, usually content to hide out in his room playing video games during Zack’s epic parties,...

Adelaide Clemens has revealed that she is excited about her role in the Silent Hill sequel Revelation 3D. The 21-year-old Australian actress, who is best known for Wasted On The Young and Love My Way, said that her character in the horror remake is nothing like any acting job she has ever had before. Clemens told The Daily Telegraph: "It's going to be very different from all the other roles I have done. Most of my work will be running and screaming. Mainly it's just getting fit enough to be able to do a running sequence for 18 hours straight. But I am looking forward to getting my teeth into some kung fu (more)...

Aussie intense thriller Wasted On The Young continued its disappointing run at the local box office in its second weekend, taking in just $26,869. It is still screening on 55 screens across the country, giving it a screen average of an unfortunate $488, despite positive talk. This is down on opening weekend where the Ben C. Lucas film took just over $52,000. Johnny Depp animated comedy/western Rango, also distributed by Paramount, cleaned up more than $2.7 million in its opening weekend from 296 screens, giving it an impressive average of $9154. Also featuring the voice of Australian Isla Fisher, the big budget film is Industrial Light And Magic.s first feature animation. Warner Bros. Hall Pass only slipped one spot on the box office charts, still taking in $1.5...

The second Australian feature film shown at cinemas this year has posted a disappointing result in its opening weekend. Western Australian film Wasted On The Young, written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Ben C. Lucas, made just $52,118 from 54 screens, giving it a low screen average of $965. Despite positive reviews, this is a disappointing result for the Paramount film, which ramped up its television advertising campaign over the weekend being seen in primetime. The film, shot by cinematographer Dan Freene on the Panavision Genesis, tells the story of a traumatic high school incident that sets off a fatal chain of events for two brothers. Starring Oliver Ackland (The Proposition) and Adelaide Clemens (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), the film has sold to overseas...

Wow, that's a lot of flicks. Everything from Peter Mullan's Neds to Benedek Fliegauf's Womb (that's right, it's a trailer!) to more Greek weirdness in Athena Tsangari's Attenberg. I wish I was going.
It's late so I'm not writing much of a post here.. Maybe I'll update tomorrow.

I've been sitting on this film for a while, waiting for a trailer which noone has yet provided, so I'm just going to go ahead and break it now. Wasted on the Young is about to premier at the Sydney Film Festival and is by first time director Ben C. Lucas, and the buzz is good. In fact, Fortissimo has already picked the film up. What's it about? Rich kids and guns from the looks of the pics, but here's a breakdown.
Wasted On The Young is set in the socially conscious and disaffected society of an elite high school. Zack (Alex Russell), a member of the cool clique and Darren (Oliver Ackland), a geeky kid are step brothers who occupy opposite ends of the school hierarchy. Bullied by the cool kids, Darren finds himself forced to act when his tormentors go too far by drugging and assaulting his best...

Compared with last year, Fortissmo Films come packing with only a single title, but that doesn't mean their sales agent won't be spending pretty much the entire festival from their rented office balcony. They signed a fairly ambitious deal with Fox - first time I've heard of a major studio outputting their titles to a films sales company of this nature and they've got one receiving a world preem at the festival in Sergei Loznitsa's My Joy. - Compared with last year, Fortissmo Films come packing with only a single title, but that doesn't mean their sales agent won't be spending pretty much the entire festival from their rented office balcony. Among the hot titles on the sales side of things is Anh Hung Tran's Norwegian Wood – a pic that I was sure was going to land a spot in Cannes this year, but appears to still be in post prod.
