Nada Surf are always the indie-rock grown-ups in the room—the band who know exactly who they are and what they’re doing. Their excellent new Moon Mirror has all the tropes that go into a Nada Surf album: exquisite guitar chimes polished until they gleam, melodies that kick in and stick, songcraft in the finest Big Star/Kinks/Spoon tradition. Matthew Caws sings his impeccably witty tunes about being in love (with a person, with a song, with a feeling) and how it changes over time, without ever settling...

Omar Apollo is honoring some of his favorite choreographers with his new video. On Tuesday, the Mexican American star released the visual for God Said No‘s “Drifting,” featuring choreography by Keone and Mari Madrid.
“I’m so tired of climbing/I can’t let go/Maybe I should let go,” sings Apollo on the track. Shot in the desert, the video features a group of dancers performing interpretive choreography to the song’s lyrics about longing.
“I grew up watching all of Keone and Mari’s videos,” Apollo wrote on X about the video.

BTS’s parent company, Hybe, has been at odds with one of its subsidiaries, Ador, for months now. The dispute became public on April 22 when Hybe audited its subsidiary over suspicions that CEO Min Hee-jin was planning a hostile takeover. Ador denied these allegations and attributed the issue to Min’s concerns that Hybe’s Illit, a girl group signed to Belift Lab, had copied NewJeans’ style and elements.
But all of this has been put on the back burner now as the eldest of the K-pop boy band BTS member, Kim Seok-jin, a.k.a Jin, was discharged from his mandatory military service on June 12. Just two days prior to his discharge, Hybe’s stock value saw an increase of 2.79% after a month-long downfall ever since the news of its feud with Ador hit the headlines.

Avril Lavigne’s upcoming Greatest Hits tour will span the biggest hits of her career — from “Girlfriend” and “Sk8er Boi” to “What the Hell” and “Complicated.” But the singer is also considering turning the catalog-spanning run into a celebration of the hits that she didn’t even end up releasing herself. During a recent appearance on Call Her Daddy, Lavigne revealed plans to perform Kelly Clarkson’s “Breakaway” on the tour.

“If you thought you’d seen me do sword work before, you haven’t seen anything yet.”
Such were Henry Cavill’s promises about the new Highlander movie he’s doing with Lionsgate and John Wick director Chad Stahelski, as the star made an appearance Wednesday at the studio’s CinemaCon sessions in Las Vegas.
But there was more. The actor’s new movie due in 2025 with Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza González, directed by Guy Ritchie, got a title: In the Grey.
The pic centers a group of gunmen who, when billions are stolen, steal them back. The trailer kicks off with a kick-ass sting by Gyllenhaal, Cavill and González in the skinny streets of Europe.
Cavill also stars in Ritchie’s upcoming The Minstry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, about the UK’s recruiting of a small group of highly skilled soldiers to strike against German forces behind enemy lines during...

Singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne, who released her debut album, ‘Let Go’, back in 2002, has explained the thought process behind her trend-setting personal style.
The ‘Complicated’ hitmaker said: “I just wanted to be comfortable. I didn’t want to dress ordinary or, you know, too plain,” reports Female First UK.
She told Entertainment Tonight: “I was definitely in touch with my sportier, more tomboy side, so I was wearing a lot of, like, kind of skateboarding clothes and hoodies and baggy pants.”
As per Female First UK, Avril’s style proved to be hugely popular with her fans, and the singer confessed to being surprised by her own influence.
The chart-topping star shared: “I remember playing my first concert at a little club and looking out the window and seeing fans lined up down the street all dressed like me – tank top, necktie, straight hair, black eyes – and I was just like,...

Palehound have shared “Independence Day,” a new look at their upcoming album, Eye on the Bat. Check it out below.
“Independence Day” is a breakup song for the ages. Over violently strummed acoustic guitar and thumping bass, El Kempner recounts the night their longterm relationship ended with painstaking detail: “Crying while the next door neighbors raged/ Our cat running under the bed with his tail between his legs.” Despite their sadness, they refuse to pretend the relationship didn’t happen. “Even if I could, it would kill me to look back,” they sing. “No, I don’t want to see the other path.”
Kempner explained the single in a statement. “The ending of a relationship that spanned the majority of my 20s illuminated a forked road that daunted me,” they said. “In the aftermath of our breakup, I found myself dwelling on what that other life would have been like...

Palehound have released “My Evil,” the second single from their forthcoming album, Eye on the Bat. They have also unveiled dates for their 2023 autumn tour. Check out the full list of dates and stream the new song below.
Built around a soft-strummed acoustic progression, “My Evil” puts vocalist El Kempner’s raw, lyrical introspection at center stage as they observe the contradiction between their idea of themself and the reality of their actions.
“‘My Evil’ is about the extremely humbling experience of realizing that yes, you are the asshole,” Kempner explained in a statement. “I found myself acting in ways I was ashamed of, and realizing how capable I was of hurting somebody when I was trying so hard not to. Sometimes when you try so hard to be a ‘good person,’ you’re actually swinging so far and recklessly that you make a full circle back to being a shithead.

Claud is turning from Super Monster to Supermodels with their second album, due out July 14th on Saddest Factory. Ahead of its release, the Phoebe Bridgers associate has shared the new single “Every Fucking Time.”
Thematically, Supermodels deals with the universal trials of growing up, though Claud’s subject matter is likely turned up to 10 since they’ve grown up in the public eye. The LP — written after the artist toured with Bridgers and Bleachers and released on the heels of opening gigs for Paramore and Le Tigre — tracks Claud’s journey from their childhood bedroom to their own apartment in New York City. Pre-orders are ongoing.
“Every Fucking Time” begins with melancholy acoustic guitar as Claud looks back on a fraught relationship — if you can’t agree on the merits of Regina Spektor, how are you going to make it? “I can’t believe it when you say you love me/ ‘Cause with you,...

Avril Lavigne has made it very clear she’s a huge Shania Twain fan.
The ACM Honors, which took place last month in Nashville, were televised this week, with Lavigne sharing a clip of herself belting out Twain’s “No One Needs To Know” onstage.

Avril Lavigne revisited her breakout hit “Complicated” for a performance on the Japanese YouTube channel, “The First Take.”
As the channel’s name suggests, the point of the video series is to get artists to perform a song in just one take (Harry Styles appeared earlier this summer, doing a rendition of “Boyfriends”). Backed only by an acoustic guitar, Lavigne gamely embraced the challenge and breezed through the 2002 classic with plenty of ease.

Pop-punk star Avril Lavigne celebrated the 20th anniversary of her groundbreaking debut album, "Let Go," in a lengthy Instagram post that was all about expressing gratitude for her fans and collaborators. When "Let Go" was released in 2002, it earned a Grammy nomination, went seven-times platinum, and kicked open the door of what had essentially become a boys-only club for modern female punk artists. Lavigne's songs - including "Sk8er Boi" and "Complicated" - remain popular today, which is something the singer admitted she never could have imagined when her album was first released.

In 2002, Avril Lavigne’s skate-punk aesthetic and emo-but-energized angst quickly made her the queen of the aughts pop-punk revival scene. Since her third album, 2007’s The Best Damn Thing, she’s ebbed and flowed, dipping her toes in bubblegum pop and more self-serious pop rock. Her seventh album, Love Sux, brings her back to her roots, bridging the gap between her early emo vibe with the bubblegum confidence that brought her away from it.

Except now, things have gotten a little more complicated. “And we’ll be together never,” she quips. “So baby you can bite me.”

Best known for his stand-up and countless comedic roles, Kevin Hart, has rarely treaded into the territory of dramatic films. The closest he’s gotten is 2011’s “Let Go” and 2017’s “The Upside,” an American remake of the French film, “The Intouchables.”

This year’s Oscars have set a new record for the largest number of entries ever in the Best Original Song category, but the 105 eligible songs do not include Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ “(If Only You Could) Save Me,” a 1930s-style big band song from “Mank” that was recently nominated for the second annual Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards.
The song is heard briefly coming from a radio in the background of one scene and plays for only about 40 seconds. Academy rules require “a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody,” and the song was judged to not fulfill that requirement.
Other songs that didn’t make the list, although they were thought to be in the running, include “Uh Oh” from “Promising Young Woman” and “Boss Bitch” from “Birds of Prey.” Even without those, the list of eligible songs tops 100 for the first time...

Sharon Van Etten has released renditions of the holiday classics “Silent Night” and “Blue Christmas.”
“Silent Night,” which she recorded in 2018 for Eric Paschal Johnson’s short film The Letter, is haunting and stark, as she sings against synths. “Blue Christmas,” the B-side, takes on a lighter feel, her lithe vocals backed by guitar. Van Etten recorded it over a decade ago for 2009’s Do You Ear What I Ear, an album for the Association to Benefit Children.

Sharon Van Etten has released a new song, “Let Go,” which will be featured in the upcoming documentary, Feels Good Man, about the history behind the internet meme Pepe the Frog.
As anyone who was too online during the 2016 election knows, Pepe the Frog, originally created by artist Matt Furie, began as a peaceful, stoner-related meme before being co-opted by alt-right and Neo-Nazi communities on websites such as 4chan. As documented in Feels Good Man, Furie has spent much of the past few years trying to regain artistic control of...

For every previously unknown single that reaches ubiquity after earning the affection of TikTok users — from Sub Urban’s “Cradles” to StaySolidRocky’s “Party Girl” to Claire Rosinkranz’s “Backyard Boy” — there seems to be a random oldie that experiences a sudden resurgence thanks to the app: Ciara’s “Get Up,” Ke$ha’s “Cannibal,” La Roux’s “Bulletproof.”

The Boy Who Sold The World is an entertaining look at boy genius Ben Pasternak, a master of the universe in the making (or has he already arrived?). One has to wonder if director Adam Barton got to the game too late or left his story a little too early despite chronicling his subject of the course of several years. The cameras start rolling when mom Amy drops the then-16-year-old Australian boy off at his new high-rise apartment in the heart of New York City. Known for his Apple unboxing videos and his iOS game Impossible Rush, which topped the app store charts, he declines multiple Silicon Valley internships to head to East Coast where venture capitalists throw money at him to develop Flogg, a social network similar for teens to buy and sell goods.

Sitting down with a cup of coffee and clicking onto Rakuten TV to watch Don’t Let Go was nice and simple. A quick search for the film, a few clicks of the mouse and I was ready to go. The interface is slick and finding what you want is easy, but I also like the lists that are available to scroll through, similar to streaming services such as Netflix, which allow you to have a look through popular films, new releases or specific genre-based titles. It’s a service I’m new to, but one I had a nice time exploring, and the HD quality is delightful too. Oh, yeah… onto the film itself.

It’s been nearly 20 years since Nada Surf’s wonderful alt-rock one-hit-by-design “Popular,” a song that perfectly embodied/parodied the underdog ambivalence of the post-Nirvana era. They’ve been making excellent music ever since, years and years after so many other alt-rock one-hits don’t even exist as trivia questions. The run of albums they made during the 2000s — 2003’s Let Go, 2005’s The Weight Is a Gift, and 2009’s Lucky — is especially worth returning to, full of sweet songs about grappling with the muted joys and weird perils of...

Stephen Colbert didn’t even wait for his monologue to mock Hallmark Channel for its initial decision to pull a Zola ad featuring a lesbian kiss. No, CBS’ “The Late Show” went right after the cable channel in the cold open.
“Hallmark really wants you to know that we value traditional, heterosexual relationships,” a voiceover read. “To show you how much, Hallmark is proud to introduce Hallmark After Dark.”
The soft holiday music soon gave way to some of that ’70s bass-and-horn stuff. Yeah, it’s on.

The Sundance Film institute has released the line-up of film for the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. Going to Sundance is one of my favorite events of the year. I love going because you never know what kind of movies you're going to see. Sometimes they are great films that amaze and entertain, other times they completely suck ass, but that's all part of the fun of going to the festival. It's an awesome experience for any hardcore movie geek, and if you ever get a chance to go, you need to.
The event takes place in Park City, Utah next year from January 21st to the 31st. It looks like there's a great line-up of movies at next year's event. My favorite portion of the event is the Midnight section because it deals more with geeky genre type movies, but I also enjoy the various sections of other line-ups.

Chicago – The significant HollywoodChicago.com show business interviews of 2012 – eclectic, independent and varied – flowed throughout the year from the perspectives of Matt Fagerholm, Brian Tallerico and Patrick McDonald. All three contribute to this year-end survey of the 15 Best Interviews of 2012.
With so many promotional tours, conventions and shows coming through Chicago, the opportunity to get a wide range of celebrities, filmmakers and up-and-comers is one of the privileges of covering TV and film here. The following interviews – often enhanced with the photography of Joe Arce – were memorable for the timing or circumstance, and the shared give-and-take between HollywoodChicago.com and the representatives of the entertainment world.

Chicago – Bring up the name Ed Asner, and immediately his legendary TV character Lou Grant comes to mind. Asner created the only TV character to successfully transition from a sitcom – “Mary Tyler Moore” – to the cutting-edge TV drama “Lou Grant.” But Asner has also been steadily working since those days, including his latest film “Let Go.”
“Let Go” is a crazy quilt ensemble comedy, following the exploits of a parole officer (David Denman). One of his clients include Artie, portrayed by Ed Asner. The iconic TV and film actor gives a subtle late career performance as a small time robber who can’t understand why things change. There is a beautiful scene with Asner and actress Peggy McKay at the conclusion of the film, as Artie makes one last attempt at redemption. Ed Asner is no lion in winter, he is still roaring.

For writer and director Brian Jett, he couldn't have asked for a better ensemble with which to make his feature film debut, "Let Go." Starring David Denham (aka Roy from "The Office"), Kevin Hart, "Community" star Gillian Jacobs, Ed Asner and more, the indie comedy finds a number of characters and lives interconnecting. "Let Go" follows Walter Dishman (Denman), a melancholy parole officer struggling with the doldrums of married life, and three eccentric ex-convicts that were recently placed under his supervision: Darla DeMint (Jacobs), a sultry femme fatale on the run from a psychopathic ex-boyfriend that she stole from and whose heart she has broken; Artie (Asner), a cranky geriatric criminal whose feeble attempts to resume his life of crime are continually thwarted; and Kris Styles (Hart), an Ivy League-educated doctor who is forced to take the most menial jobs imaginable to satisfy the conditions of his parole. These two.

One of the great things about indie films is they give That Guy a chance to become The Man. Case in point: The new indie romcomdramedy "Let Go," which takes a whole legion of That Guys and throws them together for a timely meditation on life, love, loss and, you know, whatever.
And if the new trailer for "Let Go" is any indication, one of the stars may very well go on to become A Star.
Set to premiere this weekend at the Austin Film Festival, "Let Go" tells the story of a parole officer and the three very different ex-cons he is mentoring, as they all lead intersecting lives of quiet desperation and whatnot. If there is anything more lovable in the world of entertainment than the Pixar film "Up" and the NBC sitcom "Community," we don't want to know about them; surely, their sweetness would trigger some sort early onset diabetes.
We will, however, make one exception: anything that combines the two quirky romps cannot go unappreciated. The film, despite its low budget and lack of Us distributor, boasts an impressive cast that features gorgeously quirky "Community" star Gillian Jacobs and the irascible voice of everyone's favorite globe-trotting crank, Ed Asner.
