Whimsical and cute! Some suspense without being too scary for younger children. Short for a "movie", but feels long enough when you watch it.

My son just loves Thomas & Friends. He collects the trains and has watched a number of the original series. This was our first foray into the newer Thomas adventures, and I thought it was well done and kept much of the original flavor and ideals.

Animation (versus the original's use of real-life models) has both pluses and minuses. On the plus is the allowance for greater flexibility in camera shots, more animation of the figures themselves and a wider allowance for possible story lines. On the negative, there will always be something magical about real-world objects when done as well as the original series was.

As for this particular outing, it involves a mysterious island, colorful new characters and adventure as always. The narration is well done, as are the character voices (one major difference with the originals, which are all voiced by the same narrator). The scariest moment being a near "deadly" plunge off the train tracks to the cliffs below.

Nothing too frightening, good values (usefulness, obedience, friendship, etc) and charming visuals should appeal to younger children. It's also nice to have storytelling without frenetic action... a good choice for parents.

A very derivative entry compared to anything else
With the release of Thomas & Friends: Hero of the Rails (2009), productions were definitely underway at that point for the new era of the show. All episodes were being made completely in CGI and the production changed hands. And from an initial standpoint, that specific feature impressed enough to convert even some of the diehard fans. However, that would change drastically with the next feature that came along. Not only did it annoy the fans of the original series, but even some of the newcomers found it to be an odd direction. There were just too many things going in the execution that did not resemble what used to be the show a year ago. Thus in accordance with all other features released, this was considered a very low point. And quite frankly, it is still seen as one.

The story begins with Sir Topham Hatt making an announcement about his new rescue center that is being built. The center will be made of a certain kind of wood that is very special and difficult to retrieve. Of course the engine asked to bring this cargo was Thomas. However Diesel is up to his usual behavior and decided to take the special wood himself, only to cause a total disaster. After that Sir Topham Hatt has Thomas head to the mainland to get more, only to be lost out at sea and land on a mysterious island covered in fog. While there he meets three new engines by the name Bash, Dash and Ferdinand and learns what they do on the island. Written this time completely by Sharon Miller, the writing is unfortunately not to the standard any of any other Thomas feature to come before. This also includes the quality of the tv show as well.

The pros to this feature are really the supporting elements and the voice cast. The actors who reprise their roles as the engines of Sodor continue to do an adequate job for the characters. The problem though is in the writing itself. The structure of the story starts off okay, but quickly degrades and becomes very elementary. After making a decision that gets recognized by Sir Topham Hatt, Thomas begins to get a big head. Every chance he gets from then on, he would brag about how he makes good decisions. This is repeated so much so that it becomes obnoxious. On top of that is rhyming dialog, which was something the show and other features never included. Worst of all is that it's not even continuous rhyming; it's just clumps of lines that happened to be paired and up rhymed occasionally. This doesn't make the experience any more fun.

Bash, Dash and Ferdinand, could have been interesting characters but the way they communicate is also frustrating. All three will speak together to form sentences and Ferdinand will more often than not finish it with a "That's Right" line. This provides no development at all to these engines and turns them into characters no one will care for. Adding to that are contrived sequences that make no sense and goofy gimmicks. As Thomas discovers misty island, the rail bed raft that he's on, docks perfectly in line with the rails of the land. Something like that is never that perfect. Then there's things like the "shake shake" bridge, a construct that is so feeble looking it still manages to let Thomas and other engines cross it. How is that even remotely possible? It's these types of moments that are downright questionable.

Even with Greg Tiernan returning as director to this feature, it feels like nothing could overcome the silliness that was the writing. Also the blame can't be put on narrators Michael Brandon or Michael Angelis because they were just reading what was given to them. Thankfully the animation and music were acceptable. With the show and other features now being fully converted to CGI, there really isn't anything to point out that looks wrong. Iconic locations like Brendam Docks, Tidmouth Sheds and the Sodor Search and Rescue Center are some of the biggest sights to see. As for misty island, when the fog clears the main place to be featured there is the logging station, which is unique but nowhere near is visually pleasing. The music composed by Robert Hartshorne was nice. Although the whole bit of using iconic themes for characters has been kind of forgotten, the cues still work for the scenes at hand. The ending song though to this feature is middling at best. It depends if you like country music.

Of all the Thomas & Friends features to be made, this is weakest. It has good animation, music and all the right voice actors, but the script is what fouls it all up. The new characters are not developed, the dialog contains unnecessary rhyming and several moments feel too improbable to belong to this series.

Reverend Wilbert Awdry is rolling in his grave!
benultimate28 August 2016
Where to start with this garbage?!

It introduces 3 incredibly annoying characters that almost rival Fred Figglehorn's obnoxious voice, it has a surprisingly disturbing racist quote against the diesel engines, any sense of logic and reason is completely ignored, there's an endless stream of irritating rhyming and alliteration, and even frickin' GRAMMAR ISSUES. That is just pathetic.

It's Sharon Miller's absolute worst piece of writing, and it needs to be forgotten forever. I imagine this lazy broad burning in a fire whenever I think of this abomination of a film! This is a movie that goes against EVERYTHING the Awdry family envisioned for Thomas the Tank Engine. DO NOT see this. It's not canon, it's not interesting, and it's extremely degrading for your children. Skip this one at ALL costs.

This is not what Britt would have wanted.

First, this movie has so many plot holes and a bad story. So the story was a mess and three american engines are sent to an island to rot. That is messed up, turn them into generators like Smuger. Second, how is the tunnel under water and the smoke comes from the island, and how is whiff the oldest engine on sodor know( he was a season 11 character) and theirs another thing, in the movie, how is a crew on a boat not hear 5 yards behind them so it is their falt this movie happened. Thanks Sharron Miller for the hell of all Thomas movies.

It really doesnt hold up well

Warning: Spoilers
This movie does not have much going for it. I mean seriously Thomas saves diesel and then is sent towards the mainland (England) by boat instead of using THE BRIDGE TO THERE. Then the rusty chain on the raft he's on (WHILE STILL IN STEAM) breaks (who could have guessed (sarcastic sarcasm is sarcastic) that would happen). Then the raft just happened to line up with a rail dock on misty island. I could go on and on about all of it but basicthings just happen because the major plot points need to happen somehow, even to the point of disregarding all logic.

Goodies: The Idea Of Thomas Getting Lost On An Island Is Interesting

The Opening Credits Are Awesome

The Camera And Harold Both Flying Towards Thomas And Topham Are Cool

The Seriousness At The Scene Where Thomas And The Logging Locos Are Stuck In The Tunnel Is Amazing

The Score By Robert Hartshorne Is Still 👍

The After Credits Scene With Diesel 10

Baddies: Everything Else In This Film, Especially Thomas, Who Is Infamously Known For Saying Something Racist To Diesel "No Diesel, I'm sure The Fat Controller/Sir Topham Hatt means a really useful steamie! You'll never be that!"

My Rate: Bad.

This film is just GARBAGE! I once thought Magic Railroad was the worst but no. This is the worst. Everyone make stupid decisions and EVERYONE rhymes at some point in the special. The only things I like about the special are the intro theme and the end song. That is it. I can't stand this film. It was just a cash-grab to try and expand the island. It is awful! I just scream at this all the time. STH is stupid and the logging locos are the most likeable characters in this film. And I hate them. A LOT of work needed to be done to fix this mess of a film because it is so grating to watch. It hurts my brain!

Awesome Thomas and Friends Movie, A Must See!!!
anchovyd19 April 2011
This movie totally houses the lame Thomas and the Magic Railway movie. This is what a Thomas movie should be. Fun, adventurous, creative, and with a hint of evil at the end...

My son and I love this movie. He is two and a half, I just about 40. From the first act where Sir Topham Hat introduces the "jobi" wood, you know that this movie is in the pocket. Hiro mentioning that jobi wood only grows on one or two locations in his now radioactively challenged island while a tear streams from his eye was genius. Then the not so subtle hint of racism as Diesel says that he wants to win the "Most Useful Engine" of the day contest and have the privilege of pushing the jobi wood to the construction site but Thomas says that Sir Topham Hat was really meant the most useful steam engine as diesels are noisy and dirty...

There are only two faults with this movie; Sir Topham Hat's terrible overacting (like he's on a soap opera) and Thomas mindlessly repeating the rhyme about how he makes good decisions. The res of the movie is brilliant.

Misty Island is great and the hillybilly inspired Logging Locos, Bash, Dash, and Ferdinand are funny and really interesting. Great characters who teach Thomas to let his hair down and not be so uptight and proper.

This movie has a great story, great characters, and great animation. The icing on the cake is at the end of the movie when all the trains are celebrating at the dock, the evil Diesel 10 rolls into frame looking down on the steamies from atop a mountain and vows his revenge. Sure it was probably just a teaser to get everyone interested in th upcoming Day of the Diesels movie but it was still an awesome touch.

I have to say that when Thomas moved from real models to CGI, I was disappointed but this movie shows you how good CGI can be. The trains and sets look like models and sometimes it is hard to tell, it is so well done. Bravo. Bravo.

This movie is fine but also one of the best movies ever made.

Warning: Spoilers
Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue my be a fine movie but it's also one of those movies that if you watch it you my find yourself with an ironic enjoyment with it. The story of Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue is that a rescue centre is being built on Sodor and the Fat Controller wants to use Joby logs to build it. Later that day Three flat beds have been lodded with Joby wood and Diesel really want to take them to the Sodor Search and Rescue Centre but Thomas says no I think it's because Diesel has been naughty. However Diesel doesn't listen and decides to take them there, but Thomas then gets worried but he's going the wrong way so this leads to Diesel losing the Joby wood as it falls of a broken bridge and Diesel nearly falls of but Thomas just manages to save him but the Fat Controller is really cross that the Joby wood is now lost. The Fat Controller also rewards Thomas with going to the main land to do some special jobs. The next day when Thomas is at Brendan Docks Salty tells Thomas a story about an engine that go lost and saved when he made smoke signals with his steam and that lead to people seeing him and also lead to him being saved. The dock manager then tells Thomas that there's no room for him on the boat and that he will have to wait for the next boat, however Thomas sees a rail raft attached to the end of the boat and tells the dock manager that he wants to ride on that this since he makes good decisions. The ship then sets of but later that night the chain pulling the raft with Thomas on breaks. Thomas then whistles for help but no one can hear him and soon the waves turn and twist and soon he falls fast asleep. The next morning Thomas's rail raft bumps into to dock with rails and he then puffs forward onto lad. Thomas then goes looking around the island until he meets three logging loco engines named Bash Dash and Ferdinand and they tell Thomas that he's on Misty Island. The logging locos then ask Thomas if he needs help but Thomas decides that he can get back to Sodor by him self however later one he finds out that he actually needs help and so he goes back to logging locos, but while Thomas is there he finds Joby wood and he tells that logging locos that Sodor needs Joby wood for the Sodor Search and Rescue Centre and so now Thomas and the logging locos decide to load flat beds with Joby wood then go through the underground tunnel that leads to Sodor. Meanwhile on the island of Sodor the Fat Controller gets call says that Thomas is missing and so him and all the engines have to try and find him. The story for this movie sounds great on paper but it's exuded strangely. The story is exuded Meh for the first act, then it's exuded Fine for the Second act and the third act is Bad. The first act has some questionable things in it but it has a lot of great character moments in it. The second act is slightly better sense it's very hear pounding and sad when you feel bad for Thomas getting lost and all the Sodor Island scenes are good even if there are way to many of them. Plus the hollow tree scene was pretty cool. There's also some things that are questionable in the second act such as the how has the Shake Shake Bridge not collapsed, why do the logging locos have a railway for them to play on and why do they have to crane that throws logs in the lake. The third act has fantastic action scenes and the scene wher the Fat Controller tells Thomas he can find another hat but he will never find another Thomas is really heart felt. Although it is stupid that when the Fat Controller finds Thomas smoke signals he decides to send Whiff and Percy down the tunnel that leads to Misty Island and yet he's also going to Misty Island by boat with Edward Gordon and James why is he doing that. I guess you could say that he's doing this to try and get his engines look everywhere for Thomas from top to bottom on Misty Island. The story does have a lot of unrealistic things in it but is also has some realistic things in it as well. So while there's only like 35% realistic things in this movie this movie definitely has more things in it more than that abysmal travesty know as Thomas and the Magic Railroad or should I say Thomas and the Tragic Failroad hah hah. The characters in this movie are bad but also baffling. Thomas is Meh for the first act, Bad for the second act and Meh for the third act. He may be stupid in some scenes like for example when he and the logging locos get stuck in the tunnel he then realises that his decisions where wrong oh really oh your just now realising that now. The scene of him looking around Misty Island when he's lost are fine and the scene when he has the idea to whistle to find Edward, Gordon, James and the Fat Controller is good because he's actually being smart and not dumb like he was earlier. Percy is probably the best character in this movie because of how sympathetic he is because he really hopes that the Fat Controller or someone will find Thomas. The Fat Controller is Fine for the first and second act but he's really stupid in the third act of the movie like I just said before. Edward, Gordon and James are fine. The scenes of them looking for Thomas with the Fat Controller are fine mainly because of how worried they are because they don't know how to find Thomas because of the fog in there way. The logging locos are Bad. Ferdinand is definitely the least bad one because he's got a less annoying voice and he's actually more smarter than Bash and Dash. I should also mention that Ferdinand reminds me of Meowth from the Pokemon anime series because he has the same catchphrase as he does except Ferdinand's catchphrase is ''That's Right'' and Meowth's catchphrase is ''Meowth That's Right''. Bash and Dash is practically the same they have stupid voices and they also love to joke and use dangerous equipment. The logging logs do have some moments where they are smart like how they tell Thomas they don't use He Har because it uses a lot of oil and again when they tell Thomas they don't have enough oil to chuff to Sodor, but the best scene with them in when they give Thomas the idea to make smoke signals through the hole in the top of the tunnel to call for help. The logging locos may be bad characters but there definitely better than that stupid idiot character known as Junior from Thomas and the Magic Railroad because at least the logging locos actually think about the problems that might happen if Thomas uses the oil on He Har and they tell Thomas he they don't have enough oil to puff to Sodor through the tunnel. Also the logging locos actually help Thomas a lot in the movie is trying to get back to Sodor and they also come up with the idea for Thomas to send the smoke signals. What did Junior do to help Mr. Conductor in Thomas and the Magic Railroad yeah exactly absolutely nothing at all. The animation for this movie doesn't look as good as amazing now but none if it looks cheap. There's a lot of really nice looking shots in this movie. The music and songs for this movie are fantastic. The sad heart music and the act music is this movie are fantastic. The Misty Island Rescue song does sound a bit to American but it's still catchy and great to listen to. The voice acting is just as good as it was from Hero of the Rails but the voices for Henry, Toby in the us dub are really weird. The voices for the logging locos like I said before are annoying. Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue many have a lot of baffling things in it but it's also movie that if you watch if you will find yourself with an ironic enjoy all over all of the questionable things in this movie from the story, the realism and the characters. Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue 10/10?.
