One is a young actor who is scoring what will be his biggest break yet. The other is a young actor who is already accustomed to large-scale films. There’s good news for both Osy Ikhile and Ben Whishaw, as Ikhile has won a role in Ron Howard’s In The Heart Of The Sea and Whishaw has locked in a deal to play Herman Melville in the film.Ikhile, who has worked on the likes of The Fear, Misfits, Fresh Meat and Twenty Twelve on TV and has appeared in films such as Victim and School Without Walls, is set to play a sailor named Peterson in the fact-based tale.In The Heart Of The Sea, which has been adapted from Nathaniel Philbrick’s novel by Charles Leavitt, chronicles what happens to the crew of the Essex, a whaling ship attacked and sunk by a giant sperm whale in...

Victim
Stars: Ashley Chin, Ashley Madekwe, Jason Maza, Anna Nightingale, Michael Maris, Letitia Wright, Shanika Warren-Markland, Natasha Sparkes, David Harewood | Written by Ashley Chin, Michael Kyei, Michael Maris, Adrian Scott | Directed by Alex Pillai
It’s quite strange watching Victim after recently viewing GBH because that was a British film that escaped the trappings of being a normal “urban” drama that is almost drowning the industry right now. You expect Victim to be very “urban”, giving an impression it’s about a life of crime, gangs and a typical almost cliché view of “life in London” which is almost threatening to be over used, but surprisingly it’s a film that pulls you into the security of thinking yes; it’s just another one of those typical “urban” films then blows that misinterpretation away.
When Tia a country-girl (meaning rich, lives in a big house in the country) moves to...

Here's another in our occasional series of Brits to watch... this week, Ashley Madekwe:
"I was in McDonald's in Earl's Court, and had my handbag stolen. I just felt completely violated."
Ashley, British actress on the rise with a starring role in E4 breakout hit Revenge, describes how she felt when she was herself the target of crime, as her film Victim appears in cinemas this week.
Ashley Madekwe in Victim
Victim tells the story of Tyson, a young man enjoying a lifestyle supported by the profits of crime, but inspired by his romance with the less worldly Tia (Ashley's role) to look for another, less destructive existence. The film shows both sides of the story, giving the perspective of both perpetrator and victim of criminal acts, but Ashley describes it as "a hopeful tale, which will hopefully inspire people to realise they're not trapped in the direction they...

Silent Souls (15)
(Aleksei Fedorchenko, 2010, Rus) Igor Sergeev, Yuriy Tsurilo, Yuliya Aug. 78 mins
Even by Russian standards, this lyrical road movie is a strange world of its own. It's a journey back in time, as much as across a remote landscape, with a friend helping his boss to give his deceased wife her last rites, according to their ancient tribal ways. Along the drive, we're steeped in strange folklore involving vodka, rivers, small birds and ornamental pubic hair. Is it for real? Or an elaborate joke told with a very straight face? Does it matter?
The Five Year Engagement (15)
(Nicholas Stoller, 2012, Us) Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Chris Pratt. 124 mins
The obstacle to true love is built into the title of this romcom, but it's at least smartly handled, as high-flyer Blunt keeps her fiance in perpetual limbo.
Where Do We Go Now? (12A)

Alex Pillai's urban melodrama has energy, despite the EastEnders-ish moments
Alex Pillai's urban melodrama Victim has a bizarre and overwrought ending and a few EastEnders-ish moments. But there's some energy there. Ashley Madekwe plays innocent Tia, who comes to London to study, staying with her tough cousin; this is Charmaine (Shanika Warren-Markland) who seems to be living the high life, partying and hanging out with male friends including Tyson (Ashley Chin). The awful truth is that Charmaine and her mates are running a honey-trap scam: they seduce drunken City types in clubs, go back with them to their expensive flats, then Tyson and his crew move in, beat them up and steal everything. Inevitably, a romance develops between Tia and Tyson. It doesn't quite come together, yet there's some rough'n'ready force.

From the moment that producer Danny Donnelly’s name is plastered all over the opening credits of Victim, it’s probably best not to expect too much, given his previous producing credit on Adam Deacon’s horrid vehicle Payback Season earlier this year. Though it is better-assembled than many similar derivative crime dramas, there’s nothing here we haven’t seen done better elsewhere.
When nice country girl Tia (Ashley Madekwe) comes to stay with her cousin Davina (Anna Nightingale), her kindly, naïve attitude disturbs the indelicate balance of Davina’s life, which primarily involves acting as a distraction while her gang of friends commit robberies. Meanwhile, lad Tyson (Ashley Chin) – who has caught the eye of both Tia and Davina – is trying to escape a life of crime altogether, and inevitably, this tension all comes to a head with unpleasant results.
It tries painfully hard...

Roughly 3 months after its world premiere at the Raindance Film Festival last October in London, British action/drama Victim, which stars Ashley Chin, Ashley Madekwe, Jason Maza, Adam Deacon, David Harewood and others, was acquired for UK distribution and international sales by Kaleidoscope Entertainment, for a spring 2012 release. First written about on S&A back in September 2011, the film's synopsis reads: When "country-girl" Tia comes to stay with her cousin in the city, little does she realizes that her naivety will disturb the delicate balance of cousin Davina and her group of friends. Living the good life on a career of crime, Davina's friend Tyson...

Victim is the debut feature film from director Alex Pillai and co-writer and star Ashely Chin, it stars BAFTA winner Adam Deacon, Jason Maza, Shanika Warren-Markland and David Harewood, who was recently seen in terrifying form in The Man Inside.
Jason Maza, who alerted us to the film’s trailer a few weeks ago, took to twitter to unleash the first look at the poster which you can see below. The film’s trailer is available online here, the film is being released on the 8th of June and you can read a synopsis below,
A young man’s attempt to break out of a cycle of violence. When country-girl Tia comes to stay with her cousin in the city, little does she realise that her naivety will disturb the delicate balance of cousin Davina and her group of friends. Living the good life on a career of crime, Davina...

By our reckoning, Jason Maza must be the hardest working actor in Britain. He’s in just about every small British film being made at the moment, and never seems to stop. He’s also a thoroughly nice chap, so when he contacted us to let us know about his new project, Victim – a film he not only starred in, but also produced – we were instantly interested.
The film played at last year’s Raindance festival to positive reviews, and is being released in June by Kaleidoscope. Here’s the synopsis, as per IMDb

Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Eddie Redmayne (right), Chris O'Dowd, and Adam Deacon are the five contenders for the British Academy of Film and Television Awards' Orange Rising Star Award — now known as the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award. The public selects the winner, who will be announced at the BAFTA ceremony on February 12. [You can vote here.] Two of the contenders were directed by Kenneth Branagh in the summer hit Thor: Hemsworth, who had the title role, and Hiddleston, who played Thor's villainous brother, Loki. Hiddleston kept himself busy last year. In addition to Thor, he was featured in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, Steven Spielberg's War Horse, and Terence Davies' The Deep Blue Sea. Hemsworth, for his part, appeared only in Thor last year. However, 2012 has in store The Avengers, Snow White and the Huntsman, Red Dawn, Rush, and The Cabin in the Woods. Eddie Redmayne stars opposite...
