There are Christmas movies and then there are Christmas movies -- as in, the ones you can't escape knowing about even if you tried, like "Home Alone," "It's a Wonderful Life," "Miracle on 34th Street," and, of course, "A Christmas Story." You may not love them all equally; in fact, you might actually outright hate some of them! And yet, there are moments and quotes from these films that will remain burned into your brain until the day you die. It's also inevitable that you'll end up having to revisit them during the annual winter holidays, whether it's because you legitimately love them or because you've finally given up trying to convince everyone to agree on something new to watch during one of your family gatherings and just thrown on "Elf" for the umpteenth time instead.

It’s not just about those repeats of A Christmas Story on TNT anymore.

And if the classics are all that you are looking for, there are still airings of It’s a Wonderful Life, Elf, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Home Alone, The Santa Cause, The Wizard of Oz and Miracle on 34th Street scheduled for the boomers and Gen Xers.

Nick Schenk, a film and television screenwriter with an affinity for grit, has signed with Agency for the Performing Arts.
Schenk has penned three scripts that became director-star vehicles for Clint Eastwood: “Gran Torino,” “The Mule,” and “Cry Macho.” 2008’s “Gran Torino” revived Eastwood as a leading man at the box office, earning nearly $270 million worldwide on a reported $33 million budget. Schenk also wrote “The Judge,” a 2014 feature teaming of Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, earning the latter an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor.
Most recently, Schenk co-wrote ‘”A Christmas Story Christmas” for Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment. An update to the holiday classic, the HBO Max original saw young Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) all grown up trying to recreate the Christmas magic of his youth for his own kids.
Schenk’s TV credits include co-executive producing the Discovery anthology series “Manhunt” about Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, starring Sam Worthington and Jack Huston.

Sad news today as it’s been reported that Melinda Dillon, best known for her roles in Close Encounters of the Third Kind and A Christmas Story, has died at the age of 83.
Melinda Dillon played Jillian Guiler in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, a mother whose child is abducted by aliens. She was cast in the role just three days before filming began on the recommendation of Hal Ashby, who had directed her in Bound for Glory. Dillon’s performance would earn her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also played Ralphie’s mother in Bob Clark’s A Christmas Story, memorably telling him that he would shoot his eye out if he got a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle. She received another Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Sydney Pollack’s Absence of Malice.

“Top Gun: Maverick” can’t slow down. The Tom Cruise-led action flick just hit Paramount+ last Friday and it’s already breaking streaming records — just like it did at the summer box office.
Here’s what you need to know: First, “Maverick” closed last weekend as the third-most streamed movie in the U.S., according to Whip Media’s weekly movie ranker — which is based on first-person data from its TV Time app, a movie and TV tracking app with more than 24 million global registered users. That’s a big deal, because it’s the first time a Paramount+ movie finished within the top three most-streamed movies in the U.S.
Another feather in Cruise’s cap: Paramount+ announced on Wednesday that “Maverick” had the best streaming debut in the platform’s history. The streamer said “Top Gun: Maverick” had smashed the previous viewership record for Paramount+ — which was...

Holiday favorite “A Christmas Story” is the tale of a typical boy Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) as he deals with the typical struggles kids face during the Christmas season. One of the many thorns in his side during the film is his issues with bullies Scut and Grover Dill, played by Zack Ward and Yano Anaya, who harass him throughout the movie. In order to create real tension between the two and the other child actors, they were kept separate from the rest of the cast, as Ward revealed in a recent interview with Insider.
“Most of the time Yano and I were not hanging out with the other kids. They had different shooting schedules than we did,” Ward said. “[Director Bob Clark] told our parents, ‘I just want Yano and Zack to hang out and be friends, and if possible, without being rude to the other kids, don’t really...

Here’s when and where you can stream more than 20 new holiday movies and specials this year, including at least three new versions of “A Christmas Carol:” the Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell musical “Spirited;” Netflix’s animated “Scrooge” with the voices of Luke Evans and Olivia Colman; and “A New Diva’s Christmas Carol,” where the mean old miser is now a faded music star who’s now a mean old judge on a reality TV show.
And — “Mean Girls” alert — Lindsay Lohan, Lacey Chabert and Jonathan Bennett each have a holiday movie out this year. And don’t forget “Hannukah on Rye,” about two deli owners who get matched up for the holidays, featuring singer Lisa Loeb.
If you don’t have the Hallmark channel, which is Christmas movie central, their new movies will be available on-demand on Peacock for 72 hours after their network premiere and on subsequent re-airings.

Bob Clark’s 1983 holiday classic, A Christmas Story, is one of the most beloved family films of all time. While not a blockbuster upon its initial release, the film immediately became a cult classic thanks to cable, and close to forty years later, it is so well-regarded that it still airs 24 hours a day on Christmas Eve on TBS. But what happened to the cast of A Christmas Story? Recently, fans had the chance to see many of them in the sequel, A Christmas Story Christmas, with some exceptions.
In this episode of Wtf Happened to this Celebrity, we take a look at what happened to the film’s talented cast. Notably, star Peter Billingsley, who was one of the most immediately recognizable kid actors of the eighties, and went on to significant success as a director and producer, being an executive producer on Iron Man and having directed Couples Retreat and more.

The iconic house from A Christmas Story–inarguably one of the greatest Christmas movies ever–is up for sale, but local government and a hefty price tag mean it will take a miracle for you to be the new owner.
The A Christmas Story house went up for sale last month but it doesn’t seem there has been a whole lot of movement. In fact, the listing price itself is a secret. But to give an idea of what it will set you back, a mock bid of 4 million was rejected by the owner, saying that amount couldn’t even operate the property annually.
The sale includes not just the house, but rather a 1.3 acres “campus” that features five total buildings, three parking lots, two empty lots, and, presumably, a partridge in a pear tree. The owner purchased the surrounding areas as a long-term plan to prevent inconsistencies, saying,...

Let's be real — "A Christmas Story" never left the public eye. Sure, its original release was almost 40 years ago but, much like Michael Bublé, who goes into hibernation between holiday seasons, Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) is always there, ready to entertain the moment the temperature starts dropping again. In fact, Ralphie's story is as much Christmas now as the story of Santa Claus. So while it would not be inaccurate to say that "A Christmas Story" is extra hot right now because of the recent HBO Max sequel release, it would still be disingenuous.
But that's not to marsh anyone's mallow. By most accounts, "A Christmas Story Christmas" is a solid, if not repetitious, nostalgia flick. At the very least, the project got Billingsley back into the holiday spirit, so much so that he's co-hosting "A Cinematic Journey" with Nick Schenk. We should probably tell you what that is,...

If you are one of the people who watch "A Christmas Story" yearly as a holiday ritual, you are in good company — really good company.
Peter Billingsley, who starred as Ralphie Parker in the 1983 film, and his Wild West Picture Show Productions partner Vince Vaughn have started a new video podcast called "A Cinematic Christmas Journey." They're tackling films like "Home Alone," "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation," "Four Christmases," "It's a Wonderful Life," and "The Grinch." Of course, they're also breaking down "A Christmas Story."
Joining this episode are Ian Petrella, who played Randy, Scott Schwartz, who played Flick, and R.D. Robb, who played Schwartz, with Billingsley as co-host, along with Nick Schenk, who wrote the script for the new sequel "A Christmas Story Christmas."
The guys begin by talking about how the film did at the box office, and despite good reviews, it wasn't expected to do well, it seems.

If you grew up anywhere around cold weather and snow, you might already know this, but if you're new to icy conditions, here is a public service announcement: Do not touch your tongue to a flagpole when it drops below freezing. Even if someone triple-dog dares you. Of course, if you've seen the 1983 film "A Christmas Story," you probably already know this. You likely have, as TNT and TBS do a marathon of the film every holiday.

Although "A Christmas Story" was not a big hit when it first released in theaters in 1983, it's long since become one of the most famous holiday movies of all time. We can credit the TNT channel for this; in 1997 they started airing 24-hour Christmas marathons of the movie, and throughout the whole month of December "A Christmas Story" still plays on the channel seemingly every day. The TNT executives decided that everyone was going to learn to love this movie, whether they wanted to or not.
Of course, the movie would never have caught on as well as it has if it wasn't legitimately good. As /Film's own Demetra Nikolakakis put it, the reason it's so great is because it "chooses nostalgic realism over rose-tinted glasses." The movie is about an adult Ralphie reflecting on his childhood, and it never sugarcoats just how terrible so many parts of childhood are.

There is an irony at play with Bob Clark's 1983 film "A Christmas Story." Set in 1940, "A Christmas Story" told an aggressively unromantic story of what childhood looked like at the time. It was a movie meant to undo any notions of warm nostalgia, freeing Christmastime from its halcyon and clichéd Rockwellian idylls. The young Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) was no well-behaved moppet, but a foul-mouthed, bratty child who longed to fire a weapon. He hated his school, and vengefully beat up schoolyard bullies. Santa was scary. The family Christmas tree was ruined. Christmas dinner had to be eaten at a Chinese restaurant, one of the only places open on December 25. Tradition, "A Christmas Story" posits, is an embarrassing joke.
The irony comes in with the film's eventual reputation. "A Christmas Story" became a seasonal classic, and the Gen-x children who grew up watching it happily proselytized its comedic power. Eventually,...

It's the holiday season, which means you're probably enjoying your favorite Christmas movies, whether it's a new favorite worth seeking out like "Christmas with the Campbells" or an old favorite like "A Christmas Story." Of course, the podcast begins with an episode looking back at "A Christmas Story" with some of the film's original cast members reminiscing about the making of the movie and the...

What do you want for Christmas this year? Is it a Red Ryder carbine-action 200-shot range model air rifle? Is it a fuzzy pink bunny costume? A very sexy leg lamp for your window? Heck, you may even have The Old Man's leg lamp in your own home already. But maybe you'd like all of that and more inside the actual house from the 1983 film "A Christmas Story." If so, we have good news. The Parker household -- now a museum centered around the classic holiday film -- is up for sale, according to Variety. Don't celebrate just yet, though. There are a lot of conditions, and you'll probably have to sell all your other presents to afford it.
If you don't watch "A Christmas Story" several times each holiday season as I do, the modern classic is set at Christmas in 1940s Indiana. Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley) wants nothing...

As the holiday season descends upon us, engulfing everything in sight with a deluge of frost and good cheer, we've officially reached the time of year when it's socially acceptable to watch "A Christmas Story" again. The 1983 comedy, which follows a young boy's pursuit of a non-lethal firearm in 1940s Indiana, achieves the rare combination of being both Christmas-y enough for children and not so cloyingly sweet that it forces parents to reconsider their life choices.
The movie has maintained its popularity over the years, with TBS having aired a 24-hour marathon of the film every Christmas since 1997, a tradition that has long plagued people trying to find the Christmas Day NBA games. This year, the film received a long-awaited sequel (we're all agreeing to ignore some of the previous attempts), "A Christmas Story Christmas," which features the return of much of the original cast, including the first film's star,...

As expected, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever finished its second weekend on top with an estimated 67.3 million, losing 63 of its audience. That drop is in line with most of the MCU as these big openings tend to have fairly large second week drop offs. As of right now, Wakanda Forever is still trailing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness at the same time in their runs by about 2, which is kind of shocking given how anticipated Wakanda seemed to be before it was released. The good news is: there really is no big tent pole release until December 16 when Avatar: The Way of Water is released. Barring any sort of big surprise, Black Panther should be able to hold the top spot for a while

Christmas and Hanukkah came a bit early for Netflix this year, with the streaming giant dominating the top 10 most streamed movies of the past weekend, according to Whip Media’s weekly ranker, which is based on more than 23 million global registered users of the TV Time app, which allows fans to track their favorite TV shows and movies.
Altogether, Netflix claimed six spots on the list — including the top two positions, with “Enola Holmes 2” earning the gold and “Falling for Christmas” coming in second.
This was the second straight week “Holmes” grabbed the top spot for Netflix, while “Falling for Christmas,” a new rom-com starring Lindsay Lohan, got off to a strong start on the service, following its release late last week. It was also the second straight week the original “Holmes” flick, which came out in 2020, was boosted into the top 10 on the momentum of the sequel. (The...

It’s hard to imagine now, but A Christmas Story wasn’t exactly a hit when it opened in theaters in 1983. It’s mainly due to the film’s constant rotation on cable television during the holiday season that it achieved its current status as a beloved Yuletide classic. So it makes perfect sense in the current streaming era that its long-belated, awkwardly titled sequel A Christmas Story Christmas should make its debut on HBO Max. (Yes, there was 1994’s My Summer Story and 2012’s direct-to-video sequel A Christmas Story 2. But this film ignores them, and so should you.)

Review: Bob Clark’s A Christmas Story has gone from an obscure 1980s cult classic to a stalwart of cable marathons and quotable moments in the thirty-nine years since it premiered. Despite two feature film sequels, a half dozen made-for-television movies featuring the Parker family, and much despised live broadcast musical special, nothing has lived up to the nostalgia and wholesomeness of the original. With HBO Max serving as the perfect platform for such a sequel, Ralphie Parker is back for the first direct sequel to the 1983 original. You could be forgiven for thinking A Christmas Story Christmas is nothing more than a streaming service’s attempt to trade on nostalgia and pad out its offerings. Even its lazy title suggests that it exists solely so HBO Max can give viewers an easy piece of content to click over to after watching Bob Clark’s 1983 original A Christmas Story.
But in a minor Christmas miracle, Clay Kaytis’ sequel is a little more than a quick, cheap cash-in. While it’s not going to take its predecessor’s place on the holiday movie throne anytime soon, A Christmas Story Christmas has its own charms and a sweet spirit that makes it a welcome return to Cleveland Street.
Peter Billingsley returns as Ralphie Parker, now a 40-something adult living in Chicago with his wife, Sandy (Erinn Hayes), and their two kids. No longer a bright-eyed young kid dreaming of a Red Ryder Bb gun,...

Peter Billingsley, the blond moppet from “A Christmas Story,” was 11 years old when he starred in that 1983 holiday-sleeper-that-became-a-classic (though it depends who you ask — I’ve always been something of a Scrooge about it). The image of Billingsley from “A Christmas Story” — goggle-ish glasses, beaming gopher grin — became, in its way, as iconic a movie signifier of raucous kiddie-culture spirits as Macaulay Culkin’s cheeky gaze of frozen horror in “Home Alone.” But that was 40 years ago. Billingsley is now 51, and he’s the dad in “A Christmas Story Christmas,” a latter-day sequel to the movie that a lot of people (maybe too many) think of as their all-time favorite Yuletide TV bliss-out.
In “A Christmas Story Christmas,” Billingsley, as the grown-up version of Ralphie Parker, is still a likable actor, but he’s lost any trace of that rascally Bb-gun exuberance. He now resembles the former NBC News anchor...

When Bob Clark’s “A Christmas Story” hit theaters the week before Thanksgiving 1983, no one could have foreseen the cultural impact the family comedy would have on the holiday film canon. A modest box office showing (it took in 2 million its first week and failed to crack 20 million during its full run), mixed reviews, and some awards attention from Canada’s Genie Awards added up to a hazy picture of a film that was good enough but hardly a game-changer. Later, of course, came the television airings, landing the film in near-constant rotation during the holiday season and turning it into an unexpected holiday favorite. Familiarity, it seems, didn’t breed contempt when it came to this TNT and TBS staple; it only inspired outright adoration.

Because 1983’s “A Christmas Story” has achieved iconic status among holiday movies and has become a nostalgic cornerstone to millions of fans who revisit it every December, it’s easy to forget that the film’s initial success came from its skewering of nostalgia itself.
The original tagline ironically called the film “A Tribute to the Original, Traditional, One-Hundred-Percent, Red-Blooded, Two-Fisted, All-American Christmas,” and director Bob Clark’s adaptation of Jean Shepherd’s comic reminiscences struck a chord precisely because it revealed the greed, venality, occasional cruelty, and recognizably human behavior that lurked beneath the Norman Rockwell façade of hazy Yuletide memories.
After several unsuccessful attempts to craft a sequel to Clark’s film, we finally get “A Christmas Story Christmas,” which brings back several of the original movie’s cast members. While it spends perhaps too much of its running time either recreating or directly quoting moments from its 1983 predecessor,...

The irony of Bob Clark's 1983 film "A Christmas Story" was that it was initially intended to be a satire, a wicked deconstruction of the placid, false, Normal Rockwell-ian idyll of 1950s Americana. Christmastime was not a time of peace and ease in "A Christmas Story," but a bitter world of selfishness, childhood greed, bullying, and disappointment. Over the years, "A Christmas Story" grew in estimation to such a degree that it now is run in Holiday-season 24-hour marathons on certain cable TV stations. What was once meant to dismantle nostalgia is now just a new generation's nostalgia.
The film was adapted to a stage musical in 2009, which was, in turn, broadcast on live TV in 2017. Some who pay close attention will also have noted that 2012 saw the release of the straight-to-video "A Christmas Story 2," with actor Braeden Lemasters playing a teenage version of Ralphie, the star of the first film,...

Peter Billingsley plays Ralphie, a boy who desperately wants a Bb gun for Christmas. Melinda Dillon plays his mother and Darren McGavin his father.

Perhaps you've watched the 1983 film "A Christmas Story" over and over again. It would be no surprise. It's often on a loop on Christmas Day. Heck, it might have been on enough in the background of your holiday celebrations that you've seen it more than "Star Wars." From the leg lamp that graces so many of our windows around the holidays, to the terrifying store Santa Claus, to saying, "You'll shoot your eye out" in reference to a rather dangerous Christmas toy, you've definitely heard of it. Today we have a new trailer for the sequel from Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Max, "A Christmas Story Christmas," a name that could be a theme for many of our actual Christmases.
(Let's not dwell on the fact that there were a few other sequels, including "My Summer Story" in 1994, or the direct-to-dvd sequel that takes place six years after the original...
