no tension drama
SnoopyStyle22 January 2017
Philip Markoff (Jake McDorman) is a top Boston University medical student beloved by his professor. He zeros in on Megan McAllister (Agnes Bruckner) and pushes to get married. He seems like the perfect guy on the surface but nobody sees the darkness beneath. He becomes obsessed with Craigslist and starts attacking the women on those ads with escalating violence. Police detectives Bennett (William Baldwin) investigates.

The start is way too slow. The tension is too low at the start. There is basically no tension. This should a horror story or a dramatic thriller. There is nothing close to that here. These are all perfectly functional actors given rather bland material despite the scary subject matter. It's a movie of the week at best.

Decent for a Lifetime movie
meganjohnstonn4 January 2011
Like the rest of the world (it was a trending topic on Twitter) I was anxiously awaiting the world premiere of The Craigslist Killer. I'll give it this: for a Lifetime movie, it wasn't half bad. Could it have been better? Yes. At times the acting was bad, the music was cheesy, and it was a bit slow for the first thirty minutes. I was expecting the killing scenes to be a bit more intense than they were, but I guess that's what you get with a woman's network. I think if this had been taken to the big screen and directed by Scorsese it would have been a box office hit. You have to remember that Lifetime is a network directed towards women, so the movies are directed towards women as well (hence all the romance in the beginning.) All in all I'd say it was a decent movie. It wasn't something I would pay money to see, but it was something that filled my time and kept me semi interested.

A Decent TV Movie Based on a True Story
claudio_carvalho7 September 2012
In Boston, the bright medical student Philip Markoff (Jake McDorman) is in the top of his class at the Boston University and with a promising future. When he meets the gorgeous Megan McAllister (Agnes Bruckner), they fall in love with each other and move in together to an apartment. Six months later, they travel to New Jersey and Philip proposes to marry her.

However, Philip shows that is also a dysfunctional man that posts in the Craigslist that he loves bondage and travesties and seeks masseuses to submit them to bondage and steals them. When he brutally kills a masseuse from New York that reacts to his attack, Detectives Bennett (William Baldwin) and Frye (Josh Close) track him down and their investigation discover the dark side of promising doctor.

"The Craigslist Killer" is a decent TV movie based on the true story of a man that is a bright student but also a deviant person. The screenplay does not keep the mystery about the behavior of Philip Markoff and just reports his dark story. The romance of Philip and Megan in the beginning is too long, maybe with the intention of explaining her love for him, and there is no explanation for the behavior of Philip. My vote is six.

Rubbish !!!!

Supposed to be about a real life serial killer it's like watching a cheesy syrup soap opera... Acting is appalling and not one millisecond of suspense without being marred by appalling music cues that make no sense Absolute crap don't waste your time !!!!!!

The Craigslist Killer that bores you to death, News at 11.
nathanschubach23 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
From a guy's perspective watching a predominantly-female-cable-channel's movie, I thought the movie was only OK. First, it's a TV movie; there were scenes that could have been riskier if they were made for a theater, but here they just seem like tame "problems" rather than gruesome killings. Second, the actors did not seem like the types that would do anything close to killing anyone else, nor even being interested in Craigslist, especially Jake McDorman. Third, where's the motive or the intrigue behind the 'Philip' character? He tries to explain why during the end of the movie, but it doesn't stick or make sense. Why was he getting woozy during an engagement party? Why is his fiancé so gullible? And who leaves their engagement ring at a jail visiting center? The beginning, as mentioned in other reviews, is very slow and could've been abbreviated to fit more murders or motives in its place. The music is generic and forgettable.

I honestly didn't feel anything (trust or shame) for this character in the movie, so the movie feels pretty worthless. And trying to add that whole "Pocket" business would make me furious if I were a female trying to be sold this idea that he really loved her completely. This movie = totally dramatic sham. Go watch American Psycho if you want to see a person with real issues.

Boring hallmark style horror

The whole feel of the movie doesn't match the story at all like some hallmark Christmas fall in love with the obvious character movie. It's a slow burn very boring. An excellent story that should of been told by someone else.

Definitely a made for TV movie...but it passes
Robert_duder14 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Made for TV films used to be a standard thing on Television. Every Sunday night you could catch a rather typical but entertaining film about spousal abuse or kidnappings or serial killers. Now films like that are almost exclusively saved for 'Lifetime' or 'AMC' or other cable networks. The Craigslist Killer attempts to tell a true crime story within a small budget and still entertain and tell a real story that happened. It is entertaining and it is decently made but the small budget shows and the performances are just alright making this decent but quite obviously slapped together in many ways.

The film does really revolve and rely on the performance of Jake McDorman who plays medical student and killer Philip Markoff. His performance is okay but it is also rather cheesy at times and laughable when it should be serious and really twisted. He sort of lets down. Agnes Bruckner gives a much better performance as the completely oblivious girlfriend/fiancée. Her performance makes you feel for her and really understand her character. The supporting cast are passable but really add nothing that stands out including that of William Baldwin who is probably the most recognizable name in the film.

As I said the movie is passable and watchable and reasonably entertaining. It certainly tells the story well enough and gets all the points across. I suppose the only downfall is that it is in the made for TV mentality which makes it that much less impressive that the current age of big screen thrillers. Still for a TV movie it is watchable. Director Stephen Kay is a TV director and he plays by the book. Tell the story, deal with the actors given. True crime fans will enjoy it. 6/10

Why?
nightroses3 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is a TV movie based on a true story. The killer is Phillip who does extremely well at medical school, and chases a new student Megan, pushing for her to be with him instead of studying. He was creepy from the very start. They moved in together only 6 months after they first met, and soon he wanted to marry her, and they both have a joint bank account. The girl Megan comes across as totally brainwashed by Phillip, even when he fails to pay any rent and drains the bank account when she needs money and when he turns up home at very late hours. She's not even suspicious when he returns home from scratches on his neck. In fact no one asks him about that later on. One of his victims who was found dead scratched him. He was an evil killer and this TV movie kind of humanised him and romanticised him. Why did they put on sickly music and show Phillip and Megan in a heavenly scene talking about their future together with children? It seemed very weird and sick. The victims never got justice but atleast they know he was responsible. Megan dumped the engagement ring in prison and packed away the wedding dress. That scene played more sad music, which was inappropriate and unecessary because she's a moron completely besotted by her murderer evil boyfriend. I didn't like this film at all. TV movies are often good at making films based on true events, and also even if they add some changes they're always good but this film was dull and almost sympathetic to the killer.

Above average make on a real hot story of this century
basath116 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
First and foremost we know this is a real life story. Based on what I could see, script did little to change it, which is great as the real story is interesting and captivating enough.

The news story was a gripping tale. The movies shows is as a romantic story and how a woman was betrayed by a good looking boy with a promising future. We do feel sorry for the girl and are appalled by the double life of the boy. Phil is well portrayed and it is amazing that he manages to lead a double life amongst so many people. I also wondered if he could not help himself - a possible mental illness? You do feel sorry for Megan and her parents. The fact the Phil is unable to deal with his past well and talk about it openly must have raised some concern. But then she was in love. For the young, well meant advice is usually not welcome - we all know that.

Overall a good movie. I expected a thriller but saw a ill-fated romance. I was glad that Megan escaped - Credit goes to Boston Police, I suppose. I could not help wondering if a Thriller version would have been more enjoyable movie.

The acting does justice to the story and so does the script. One cannot forget the fact that this is real, and it happened as portrayed - only a few films that we see can really teach us about life. And this is one of them - all teenagers must see this to see for themselves that not all are what they appear to be and that our world is not just full of friends.

I would give it a six out of ten.

Lifetime personified

What a dismal adaption of a real life serial killer. No tension, no examination of the psyche of the killer, all fluff and Lifetime syrup. The actors are wasted in this mess. This story deserves a decent adaptation.

Movie
austinhrichards3 January 2011
I thought that this movie was very well done for a Lifetime movie. I thought that this movie was going to be bad but in fact it was thrilling. I was very interested through out the movie. The acting wasn't great but it was a reasonably okay casting. Phillip's acting was up and down, depending on the scenes but that only detracted from the movie just a little. I thought the directing was all right. The lines were just okay. At times they were really good, and others they were just hokey. I would recommend watching but not something you gotta see right away. I give this a good rating because it is not the normal crap movie that Lifetime produces. It is a quality film that deserves recognition. I am glad this was filmed because it does show the true evil that anybody can have. Well, what you define as evil.

Actually a solid made-for-TV movie
sz_chica116 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Jake Mcdorman, besides being ridiculously attractive that he is unlike the real bad guy, did a decent job portraying the role of Philip Markoff in this movie by hiding his psychotic other personality from others for a significant amount of time. It was a role that he definitely knew how to act out without trying too hard which made it an overall good movie besides being easy on the eye. His TV wife however, was a bad actress, and honestly didn't have much charisma for the role. Perhaps a more well established actress could have been considered, who knows? He isn't a big actor either, but does a thorough job. I had a hunch that a movie like this would come out onto Lifetime just because Lacy Peterson and Natalie Holloway were also made into movies and were broadcasting on Lifetime. No big shocker there. Still this was a sexy thriller that i definitely enjoyed even though i normally don't watch Lifetime.

True story with well-acted characterizations.
Somesweetkid19 January 2024
Usually in these Lifetime-type television movies, the acting is histrionic, over-wrought and completely unrealistic. However, this movie held my interest and each actor was convincing in his/her role, especially in light of the fact that it was based on the true story of the actual Craigslist killer, Philip Markoff.

In addition, the dialogue was realistic. The two leads did an excellent job, and thankfully the scenes of violence were brief and not overly graphic.

Finally, the actors portraying Markoff's fiancé's parents conducted themselves in a way I would think parents would react if they found out their daughter was engaged to a person who committed the acts Markoff did. William Baldwin also acquitted himself well as the lead detective pursuing the perpetrator.

I thought the movie was well done considering the subject matter.

Only continued watching to know what the out come was
NicoleCorrin20 September 2022
The acting, directing, and presentation are terrible. There is no emotion or connection to the characters.

If you want to know about the story look up the facts online - black and white, no story, no reasoning, no sound, no feelings.

I don't even feel sorry for the people involved because this was done so bad. There are many people in the movie that they spent time on developing into ... nothing they just disappear.

This movie script was a teenagers 1st try at a scary story. (I only say teenager because they haven't experienced enough in life yet to know what to write).

Now I want to watch another movie so I don't feel like I've wasted my movie night.

So Bad
thefish-3090913 August 2022
If you read the summary of the plot you do not need to see the film - it provides no greater insight. No need to look at why, the motivations, the history. I have no idea how a film like this gets funded. Serious, intelligent people - directing, producing, acting and not one of the went wow what a waste of time. Almost so bad you should watch!

Inappropriate and weird choices: a hollow shell of a movie
Catocala16 October 2022
First of all, I was not familiar with the Craiglist killer before this movie, but I looked it up and the events in the movie appear oversimplified/altered but not so distorted as to make it an unrecognizable story. However, that's about the only positive thing that can be said...

Such a collection of bad choices... The story is about - you guessed it - the Craigslist killer. Philip Markoff led a double life as an engaged, grade A med student, lots of friends, while at the same time seeking out sex workers on Craigslist to rob and humiliate, even killing one. Sounds enaging? Guess again! This movie manages to kill all and any interest the viewers might have.

The script/plot is messy and starts questions that it does not answer. For example, hinting at Markoff's family history, but not following up on that. Showing his M. O., but never explaining why or how he started doing this. And much, much more.

Moreover, the acting is horrible and almost 80% consists of "romantic" lovey dovey scenes between Markoff and his feyoncé. Very stunted dialogues with the senselessness and simplicity, even a teenager would think it's dumb. Ridiculous and superficial. Think level "I love you - no, I love you more", "you're so perfect" and worse. It has no point. If it was meant to give their relationship more credit, as a "how shocking that he lived so separate lives", it just failed. Instead, it comes across as if you're watching a different kind of movie. And the main problem: if you were to cut these parts out, there would be exactly 20 minutes of movie left.

Oh! And the music! "Clueless" or "Dawson's Creek" would have been jealous! It was so stupendously off-the-mark that it was almost funny, had it not been such a serious topic. Romcom songs play in all the scenes involving his bride-to-be, but also in a lot of scenes that had a much darker tone, making it even more inappropriate.

Then there are the few parts about his actual crimes, but these are filmed like it's a low budget student project and with zero suspense. Even though the actual women he attacked must have gone through something terrifying and traumatic, in the movie it elicites no empathetic or emotional resposne in the viewer. Even near the ending of the movie, it left me wondering what the point was of making this movie.

The events that happened in real life could have been adapted to the screen in a respectful and captivating movie. This movie is not that. It seems amateuristic and as if it does not get the point of its own story.

Achieves its Purpose but Not More
ThereelscoopwithKK28 October 2022
In many ways the majority of the movie plays like a Hallmark Christmas love story until of course all the horrible events take place. There's of course nothing wrong with made for TV movies like this one that attract large audiences, but they just aren't spectacular if you re being honest with yourself. The fact this is a true story makes it really tragic and leaves you feeling kind of sick that someone was able to pull these horrible acts off.

Further, the acting in the movie , much like other made for TV movies, is not all that special and the movie doesn't really dig deep into what Philips motivations were. Perhaps a bit too much time is spent on the love story and not how Philip ended in this state. I understand they had to put effort into how he appeared to others but i feel there were opportunities to do this while also showing how he became what he did.

It perhaps would have been better to make it as a series, but then again Im not sure it's always in the best interest of society to glorify these people by giving them a whole series. Although I guess you do see them making successful spin-offs on Ted Bundy and Dahmer, but I digress.

In the end it was a worthwhile watch and I thought it probably deserved better than what I scored it , but it felt incomplete to me and therefore I could not give it higher.

Only if you're bored.
zwdg9717 August 2021
I have to give the film makers points for staying true to the story, almost everything they showed actually happened and they even used the real names. However, the lack of flair usually given to "based on true story" movies ultimately led it to not be that interesting.

decent thriller
Kirpianuscus30 April 2016
it could be better. it is the first conclusion after its end. in fact, the verdict is not correct. because it has the virtue to be a honest adaptation of a real case, warning about relations on social sites, portrait of a man under the pressure of real life, free in virtual space , killer and , at first sigh, admirable student. a film who presents without impose the verdict. proposing image of a killer , sketches for his victims, the impact for family and media, the last days and the final decision. the manner - same with a television film. the absence of explicit scenes, the superficial presentation of details are far to represent errors. the essence of case is important. and the way to preserve two life styles has a good illustration. so, a decent thriller.

Description was misleading
nathanmanson9 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
There's aspects of the film I did like and there's aspects I didn't like. Firstly I think the bio is misleading. It says 'murderous pursuit of women' which is actually wrong if you've watched it. He just liked being dominant over women his intention wasn't to actually kill them. So I feel I've been a bit mislead there. I was expecting a full on film about a mass murderer but it was just some sex crazed guy that killed one person and it wasn't even his initial intention.

Even though it's quite a low budget film I actually thought the acting was really good, especially from the main man, absolutely no complaints there. Realistically you go into a film like this kind of expecting an average 6/10 so you can't be disappointed after.

End of the day it tells the story well but it was misleading. If the description was actually accurate I'd have literally no negatives about the film.

Don't waste your time
luanasibien18 September 2022
From far the worst movie I saw this years, poor acting, stupid characters, even the camera work is terrible, it made one hour feels like an eternity. The story could have be good, but just lacks everything. It was torture to sit until the end, precious life hours completely wasted. I was shocked with the rating here, once I always use it to choose movies, learned now it can't be trusted that much, honestly i cant imagine how anyone could give more than 2 starts to this.

I made an effort to come write this review so i can save peoples time of this apathetic experience that was watch to this. You re welcome.

This Is What Happened
j-ritchie-756-2597416 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a dramatisation of real-life events, about a guy who's darker side takes over and leads to murder. As such, there is no dissection of the psyche to explain the lead character's flaws and proclivities. This is just a collection of scenes strung together by people involved in the events, presenting a portrait of a man just like everyone else but who spiralled out of control.

It seems clear there was no participation from Philip Markoff or his family, so there are inevitable gaps in the story. However, there are enough nuggets presented to allow a clear picture to evolve of a complex character.

Philip Markoff doesn't come over as a monster. Instead he's just like everyone else; a person with multiple facets to their personality, who leads a double-life, who hides aspects of his life from other people - just like everyone does. Don't think everyone hides parts of themselves from others? How many people hide their browsing history from others? How many married people have affairs? How many people are polite to your face and then curse you behind your back. We all have multiple aspects to ourselves, but for some people these aspects can be damaging. This film presents a portrait of a 'normal' man, with no judgements or fake insights.

As part of the portrait of a normal man, Philip Markoff isn't presented as some dark, evil genius; he's actually quite bad at keeping his lives separate, he's no computer genius, and he's obviously never watched CSI. He's a normal guy who gets caught fairly quickly because he doesn't know how to hide his tracks, just like everyone else.

This film is exactly what it tries to be, a simple portrait of events that shocked a nation. There's no huge budget, no intense emotion-wrenching acting, no pop-psych 101, just a simple story about a troubled man. I didn't watch this film expecting Oscar-class movie making. It's a made for TV film that delivers exactly what it set out to, a solid film about the guy next door.

Really not good
hxsyhcmpy2 October 2021
First off, what accent was Billy Baldwin trying to use? He is honestly not a good actor and this movie just demonstrates this fact. I really should have known better when I saw him come up on the screen. The movie was at best a made for TV show. The music did not match what was happening and there was absolutely no suspense. I kept watching it hoping it would get better. After half a bottle of wine.... still didn't do it for me. So to summarize, if you're bored on a Friday night like I was, and you cant find anything better to watch, this might just fill that void but honestly just no.
