An enjoyable, old-fashioned thriller
ggreenfield-122 March 2019
A bit of a mix of Twilight Zone, Psycho, and Alfred Hitchcock. I actually found this thriller fun to watch and the cinematography was great! Make some fresh popcorn, put your feet up on a hassock, and enjoy. I sure did.

well it was a decent SWING . SOME PARTS SHOWED POTENTIAL .

Warning: Spoilers
very rarely write "spoiler reviews" because I generally won't read them myself. However, this movie would be very hard to review without some references to the plot. I will try and minimize the "spoilage".

I have a somewhat different point of view than many of the other reviewers. This movie was reasonably well-acted despite the hackneyed script and the weak dialogue. The actors didn't have much to work with so I think they did the best they could.

The movie is quite low-budget, suspense film "formulaic" with the old/stereotypical murder order. You will see what I mean as to who gets killed first and why. They vary it somewhat by combining three of the stereotypical kill elements into one person. Nonetheless, it's not the best way to foreshadow and build suspense.

It doesn't take long to figure out "whodunit" so it doesn't really qualify as a mystery "whodunit". There is also the now grossly clichéd stupid behavior by the characters. The film could have done without that but then it would have needed more creativity in the script. There is also the clichéd and stereotypical vehicle scene. That got old about 25 years ago and had me shaking my head.

The interactions between the characters were not formulaic because no sentient individuals behave like that (unless they are Bonobos). Or, maybe, I'm getting old and that is the expected behavior now. I'm not talking about sex or drugs, that's normal and expected human behavior. Rather it's how the characters get involved and deal with things.

I was gratified to see a woman go for a weapon as soon as it could be obtained. Unlike the old stereotype, you don't have to wait until the end of the movie to see it. With Hollywood sooo politically correct, I'm surprised self-defense was allowed. That added one star to my original two star rating. Though it almost lost it again because of a character's use of a fireplace poker...like we've never seen that before!

Anyway, the movie was about average-B-grade in cinematography, production values and scene set-up. Again, I've seen much worse (and far, far better).

This movie would be good to watch if you are young, with friends, no raves available and it's free or on a monthly-fee streaming service. It's good for a laugh or two (not deliberately) and it's a good lesson in script stupidity. Don't see this if you are in the mood for a real mystery, thriller, suspense or horror film. It is none of those. I read a reference to "Hitchcock" by a reviewer. Trust me, it is NOTHING like a Hitchcock film!

Good Luck! Regards, Other View

This an update to my original review. After it was posted and positioned on the 1st.page of reviews, shortlytherafter, another ridiculously positive review was added to move mine and make the reader who only reads a few reviews think this was an excellent movie. If you are a regular IMDb user you know that garbage, low budget films get friends, family and staff to write gushing reviews for the movie so the casual review readers will buy it.

Common signs of a shill review frequently name the entire cast like they are friends (they often are). Another sign is 9 or 10 stars on an obvious "B" movie with B-movie stars and B- directors. If you check carefully you can often find shill review before or on the day of release. Further checking and you will frequently see the shill reviewer has written very few reviews (usually one). The final clue is the use of superlatives to describe the movie "fantastic" "brilliant" "a gem" etc. etc. ad nauseum.

Don't buy into the fake shill reviews. It's best if you start at the latest review and then Read on to earliest. Shill reviews REALLY annoy me but they are a fact of life here with crap movies. The shill reviews for this movie are very obvious and contain numerous " fibs" and are trying to either pimp you out of your time, money or to gain "brownie points" to be thought of well by their industry. In any case they are dishonest and make a mess out of IMDb's review process. They are completely selfish, proof that the movie is poor.

BTW, the shills work together in giving themselves likes and dislikes to honest reviewers. Like no one will notice. I hope that these deceivers NEVER get a or job in the industry and get spotted every time they write a review. If I was director, I'd be mortified by these people's disingenuous natures.

If possible I'm reducing the movies' star count to 1 (one) a and will do soEVERYTIME I find more than one shill review. I made a mistake here giving 3 stars that I will try and fix. I repeat, whatever you do Don't pay anything to watch this movie! Best regards, Other view!

Auld Lang Syne
nogodnomasters1 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens on New Year's eve with a stabbed drunk grown male and a young girl cowering in a corner. Apparently years later we have a group of four spending New Year's Eve on Maratha's Vineyard. Harrison (Evan Bass) a slightly dysfunctional irritating personality brings along his girlfriend Lacey (Miranda Noelle Wilson) without telling the other two in the group. Lacey has intimacy issues and always spends New Years alone. Harrison has had a bad business deal with his buddy Scott (Al Thompson). Scott's former girlfriend Jenn (María DiDomenico) rounds out the group. There is also the creepy neighbor caretaker (Rick Estabrook).

Things are not hard to figure out. In fact too easy. It would have been nice if there was some kind of twist (reverse plot spoiler) i.e. if the childhood killer had been an unseen brother and not the girl. Unfortunately the writing was far too simple. It was painful to sit through knowing what was going to happen with the film proceeding at a snail's pace.

Guide: F-bomb. No sex or nudity.

Claustrophobic entertainment
Phil_Chester17 July 2018
A claustrophobic, old-school thriller, making very good use of a (mostly) single location. Great ensemble acting and a nice twist ending which rewards viewing all the way through. As someone who has only visited Martha's Vineyard in the summer and heard tales of the "off-season population", I was very curious to watch this film. It captured the atmosphere and sense of place very well and made me want to go back again, despite making me way more wary of those "off-seasoners"! Recommended.

Abysmal
Vantec11 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Four twenty-somethings travel to an abandoned Martha's Vineyards to celebrate the new year and 'reconnect'. Interpersonal frictions and emotional trauma soon interrupt the festivities and as the first body unexplainedly drops so does the plot's plausibility. The surviving three retreat to the cabin until the end with the lights off. It's as exciting as it sounds.

Nothing here works. The writing is horrendous with lines beyond saving by A-list actors, and these are very far from A-list actors. The script is chock full of clichés and hilarious verbal clunkers, the false leads are insulting, the tension MIA, the motives nearly incomprehensible and the performances bizarrely disinterested. The first death among old friends elicits all the emotional shock of a rainy day. Not one character is likable. The guilty party is exactly who you thought from the start.

'The Eve' is to film what parrot talk is to speech; aping without content. There is no shortage of horrible movies to watch instead of this one, just avoid.

Beyond horrible
pensacolacomputer12 May 2015
You've got to be kidding me, Evan Bass has to be one of the worst writers, if not the worst writer on the face of the planet. As a comedy this movie kind of worked but I don't think that's what they were going for. The "actors" and I use that word loosely, are horrendously bad. The script is laughably funny. The plot? Who cares, this movie was horrendously bad. Please save yourself an hour and 20 minutes and do not watch this pathetic piece of garbage. However if you like making fun of movies, there is plenty here to make fun of. I had a few good laughs at just how horribly written, directed, and acted the "movie" was. You have been warned.

Really Quite Bad
FilmFatale23 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Four people (college pals Scott, Jenn, and Harry plus Harry's new girlfriend Lacey) head to Scott's beach house on Martha's Vineyard to reconnect but things start to go wrong pretty much from the outset - for the characters AND the viewer. As another reviewer say, nothing works here. The killer is so obvious that I assumed they would be a red herring but no: the person who acts like the looney killer is just that. The "reconnecting" part of the plot doesn't work because it's made clear that the school friends have interacted recently, and to make matters worse, they don't seem to like each other all that much anyway. Nobody acts like a real person would, either; they simply lope along from scene to scene because the script says they should.

I gave The Eve two stars instead of one for two reasons. First, I didn't actively hate it - I just found it boring and bad, not excruciating. For the life of me, I can't recall what the other reason was. Yes, I finished watching the movie not ten minutes ago and can't remember the other redeeming quality. That sums up The Eve quite well, actually.

Wanted to like it but...
PlayinUncleDew12 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
...it was just terrible. Not a horror movie. No chills. No thrills. No suspense.

My wife and I are horror fans and have spent time on the Vineyard in the winter so we were really excited about an indie horror movie shot in that setting. Unfortunately, the 2 stars I give the movie are for the setting only, the movie itself was a miss on every level. Poor acting, poor script (dialogue forced, unnatural), poor execution.

The characters couldn't die fast enough for me. The only one character I enjoyed at all goes first. And in an unexplained way, bringing about a near comical response by his 'friends', who determine quickly that he has expired- without any visible signs of trauma- and left where he lay with a rising tide approaching.

Too many contrived scenes with ridiculous dialogue delivered poorly to mention, but when you find yourself begging for a lame jump scare you know it's a bad movie. It was sealed when the girls ask Harrison why he was gone so long when he went to sneak into the neighbor's house in the dark to use their phone and he responds: "It was harder to get there than I thought it would be. I couldn't see and I had to deal with the bushes and thorns." Wow.

As for the reviews invoking "throwback" type of horror, don't buy it. It is just so fundamentally weak in all respects that it can only be deemed an homage to other equally poor movies.

Great to see the sleepy island in winter but other than that, a huge disappointment.

Utter garbage
amberraemoorex6 February 2019
I'm a huge horror fan and can appreciate a "bad" scary movie. This wasn't it. It's poorly acted and bored me to tears. There's not even any gratuitous violence to make up for how utterlystupid it is.

Call-Me-Mr-Smith15 December 2019
If you really want to know how this movie fares, read mikevonbach's review - there is nothing to add or subtract to it. I just wonder why would any filmmaker with an ounce of integrity solicit so many fake reviews and thus devoid themselves of true faring of they work. In reality, this movie would be rated 3/10, but I join mikevonbach's view and give it a single star of shame.

Typical indie horror bore
Leofwine_draca28 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
THE EVE is an example of your typical indie horror flick, made without anything in the way of imagination or indeed talent. The story is about the usual party of dull, self-centred characters deciding to holiday at a haunted location and running afoul of whatever lives there. There's very little horror content here, making the whole thing a real turn-off.

Solid thriller with suspense and tension
donnawheeler200412 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Not your typical thriller/horror film because these friends, and this story, are written to showcase the relationships between them as people. It's cool to see such fleshed out characters who have history with each other in this genre. It's a much more involving story than a simple horror movie.

The editing, score, camera work, lighting and location all carry through nicely, working to amp up the tension and suspense and help add dimension. It's not a slash and gore fest. It's a well told story of 4 friends spending a New Year's together in a remote area and it step-by-step going wrong.

A well done indie that is part psychological thriller, part ensemble drama, part character study and part scary movie. Well worth the watch.

My Review Of "The Eve"
ASouthernHorrorFan12 October 2015
Ritchie Steven Filippi shows some real talent in controlling the story and moving it even paced from start to finish. The cast all give very strong performances and really emote. The dialog moves nicely between character development scenes, and allow for you to really buy into these people and the nightmare situation they are in. Plus for the first 40 minutes or so you really don't get a sense to who is the killer. More on that later.

The special effects are very minimal, as I stated before-everything is really PG here. There are some small moments with blood and a bit of quick violence, but everything stays mostly off camera and suggestive. Filippi nor writer Evan Bass, every get visceral, or gory with the horror so the effects remain mostly driven by the struggles and fears of these characters. Plus the atmosphere has elements of Hitchcock that play up the melodrama and shadowy backgrounds. Most of the film happens at night so the psychological side really does play out well in "The Eve". The film has a nice, classic thriller soundtrack mixed in that carries the atmosphere and emotion of this nightmare.

Overall "The Eve" is a nice thriller for fans of the more 'Lifetime adjacent' stories that works more on emotion and less on horror. The film really does show Filippi and the rest of the cast and crew's talent, I really could find no fault in the performances, the story, the cinematography or even the toned down scenes that call for violence. My only real complaint is that I wanted to see some more blood and carnage, I wanted to really get into the kill scenes on this one. Plus it would have been nice if there was a bit of decor or something that really played on the whole "New Year's Eve" horror aspect of "The Eve". Still it is a decent "soft" thriller with a devious ending, and it does have the Auld Lang Syne used in a dark and creepy way!

By no means the worst suspense movie I've seen (doesn't necessarily mean it's good)

This movie was TERRIBLE!!! I feel so cheated watching this garbage and I've seen a lot of dumb movies. Who you think is the killer... IS THE KILLER. NO MOTIVE. Oh lord this movie is bad. The blonde girl's acting is the ABSOLUTE WORST! Everything is so obvious and just nonsensical. Oh my word!!!! This movie takes the cake. The acting was mediocre and it really didnt make any sense.

All the reviews about how awesome and riveting it is... LIES! REVOLTING is more like it! There are no thrills, no suspense, no sense of danger... NOTHING! I'M UPSET. I cant believe i wasted my time watching this absolute GARBAGE.

I'm not sure where to begin. Acting - horrible. Storyline - predictable and bad. This is just another run of the mill, psycho within the "group" film. I'm not sure why/how these indie films get higher than they should ratings.

You know right off who the the nutjob is if you've ever seen a similar "horror" movie before.

I'd give this movie a "1" but at least the scenery is nice.

Warning: Spoilers
If you want to watch a film and pick up some tips on how to make a laughable horror movie with a couple of bucks and a cast that couldn't act to save their lives, well, this is for you. 😘

I loved the way they found a dead body on the beach on a cold but fairly nice day. No blood, no wounds, no nothing, so they high tail it back to the cabin to phone the emergency services. This is after previously stating that there are no phones at the cabin. Suddenly after running back to the cabin, day has miraculously turned into night. 😬 Maybe they took a wrong turn and ran around the island 5 or 6 times.

Now, no crap horror movie would be complete without some woman running around and falling over, phone don't work and car won't start. Cliche after cliche.

Do yourself a favour and give this one a miss. There's not even a smidgen of a story or any kind of a plot. My score. 7 out of 456 billion.

Exciting Thriller!
connorsrebecca12 October 2015
This movie is worth watching because the script keeps you engaged and the acting is very strong. The music and the setting make it spooky and suspenseful without being overly dramatic like many poorly made horror/thriller films.

I've been to Martha's Vineyard and they really captured the island's sinister sense of loneliness. Throw in a killer with no where to run and you get a very exciting thriller.

You really get the sense that you are on the eve of something bad. The director does a great job of building the suspense without making it feel corny or fake. A lot of thought went into each shot. The music enhances the watching experience.

Well done!

Well-crafted thriller delivers
mark-2245227 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
"The Eve" is the perfect movie for a cold night in front of the fire. Excellent storytelling that pays homage to many of the familiar thriller elements (jump scene with the girl in the shower), without ever feeling tired and clichéd.

That good, solid storytelling is supported by meticulous attention to detail in the camera-work, scripting, lighting, continuity, and score. All these elements combine beautifully to give the unsettling sense that as the doomed foursome arrives in Martha's Vineyard for their New Year's Eve vacation, something is deeply wrong. Those deeper elements work their way out as the plot unfolds, and everything they set up early in the film ultimately pays off.

One movie critic described a good movie as one that "casts a spell and doesn't break it." The Eve does this very well, and it kept me in suspense all the way until the closing credits.

I recommend this movie for any fans of the genre. Although this was an independent film, I believe it has broad appeal for anyone looking for a date-night thriller. I'll be watching this one again!

Fun little thriller!
baccaruda128 March 2022
I enjoyed this one. Was it cheesy? Yup! Was it low budget? Oh yeah. Did I go in expecting a masterpiece? Of course not! Was it a fun b-movie horror romp? It sure was! I didn't call the twist ending (my wife did, though), and overall I found the acting and direction pretty solid. If anything, the story went a little sideways toward the end and the writing sometimes lost is way in the narrative, but if you're looking for the diversion of an indie thriller, you could do far worse than spending your time on "The Eve".

Interesting take on the genre
artistgp31 October 2015
As I write this it's Halloween. To keep the vibe of the spooky season going I've been watching a lot of horror flicks, many of them slashers. I was pleasantly surprised to see this film, given that they took a different approach to their setting in general. One can always say that suspense/horror films take a similar formula, but I greatly appreciated the filmmakers shaking things up with their locations and time of year.

It's a well pieced together film that takes a look at the personal relationships we all deal with on an every day basis. The trailer and poster pulled me in right away and I wasn't disappointed. I'm personally a big fan of independent filmmaking so I had a special interest in this movie. Give it a watch for yourself and enjoy the ride.

I noticed this film had mixed reviews. But I took a chance and glad I did. Sure, it is not a Hollywood blockbuster. But it delivers good solid Indie entertainment. It is well paced and has great character development. Action in the Cabin is tense and suspenseful. Well filmed with great cinematography. Worth a watch.
