No stranger to controversy, Madonna has found herself in hot water once again for photos posted to her Instagram page.
The performer has been promoting her new album Rebel Heart by posting photos of famous friends and historical figures with their faces wrapped in black cords (as hers is on the album’s cover) but it wasn’t until Friday, when she posted photos of Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, that the performer drew serious criticism for the social promotion.
"This #rebelheart fought for freedom!" Madonna wrote on the photo of Mandela.
"This #rebelheart had a dream!" she captioned the Mlk photo.
Critics were quick to point out the singer's misguided strategy of comparing herself to historical civil-rights leaders as well as the disturbing imagery of the photos.
This isn’t Madonna’s first race-related Instagram controversy. Back in January 2014, the singer apologized after using the hashtag "#disnigga" on a photo of son Rocco boxing...

There is probably no doubt in anyone’s mind that Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela were rebels at heart, but Madonna‘s Twitter following appears to be turned off that she decided to turn them into a “#rebelheart” art project promoting her upcoming album of the same name.
In a continuation of a social media campaign in which Madonna takes cultural icons and wraps their face in black nylon, much like the cover art for her “Rebel Heart” single, she tweeted distorted pictures of the civil rights leaders.

During an interview last month, when Idris Elba revealed his and Tom Hiddleston's inclusion in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the British actor had also recalled a "torture" experience doing reshoots for Thor: The Dark World just 24 hours after portraying late anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela. Some headlines and coverage of the interview had ran with the belief that Elba wanted out of his contract with Marvel Studios, for whom he plays the Asgardian gatekeeper Heimdall, but he now tells The Daily Beast that that is not the case at all. "I don’t know where people got that, man," responded Idris Elba. "I was quite specifically talking about the comparison between playing Heimdall on one day, and playing Mandela on the next. That’s sloppy journalism, or just really bad misquoting. I have a great relationship with the Marvel team, and the character of Heimdall. People are really running with this thing like,...

Idris Elba has revealed plans to release a Luther-inspired album.
The actor and musician is working on a collection of songs with the provisional title Murder Loves John, which draws on Elba's character John Luther from the BBC drama.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Front Row, Elba said: "I'd like to dissect the idea of someone who has to deal with so much darkness.
"Detectives carry a lot of stuff. They meet someone who's done something heinous, but they have to have an objective perspective on them until proven.
"That could create some really good songs... and definitely an interesting mood, musically."
Elba's album Mi Mandela, which pays tribute to Nelson Mandela, is released today.
The Luther actor's debut LP features artists such as James Blake, Mumford & Sons, Mr Hudson and Nothembi Mkhwebane.

Joss Whedon has said that Idris Elba should expect to be reprimanded for revealing The Avengers: Age of Ultron plot details.
The actor, who starred as Heimdall in both Thor and Thor: The Dark World, recently let slip that he had filmed with both Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki). Hiddleston's appearance in the film had previously remained unconfirmed.
Questioned by Vulture about Elba's comments, director Whedon concluded that an email to the actor might contain "an attitude of scold".
When it was suggested that Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige will probably already have been in touch with Elba, Whedon said: "Yeah, when you have a cast of 19,000 people, inevitably, once every month, you pick up [a story] and you're like, 'Awww'."
In his interview with The Telegraph, the Luther star spoke of how he had to reshoot scenes for Thor: The Dark World shortly after finishing filming as Nelson Mandela...

Joss Whedon Says Idris Elba Might Receive A Scolding Attitude For Spoiling ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’
British actor Idris Elba is in all kinds of hot water this week with Marvel execs. First he spoiled a big secret in “Avengers: Age Of Ultron”—a cameo which you can probably already guess if you haven’t read the Internet-wide headlines yet. Is it the credits tag that sets up “Thor 3” aka “Thor: Ragnarok”? Who knows, but it could mean that Marvel movie might be more important to the company’s universe building than previously thought. But on top of all that Elba even kind of dissed Marvel’s imaginary world of movie-making. Ebla was discussing immersing himself for the role of Nelson Mandela in the little-seen “Mandela: Walk To Freedom” which he starred in. And then after completing the movie—which he apparently felt particularly proud of— he felt it jarring to go back into the CGI-world of Marvel reshoots for “Thor: The Dark World.

Nelson Mandela would have been 96 today. The South African leader and anti-apartheid revolutionary died on Dec. 5, leaving July 18, his birthday, as an opportunity for his contributions to the advancement of global peace to be celebrated in his absence. In honor of Mandela's legacy, social media has been packed with remembrances and tributes, many of them coming from the celebrity crowd that has practically deified Mandela, reserving an almost spiritual reverence for the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who was also an A-list celeb in his own right. ★★☆☆☆ An unapologetically personal open letter to the former South African president, Khalo Matabane's Nelson Mandela: The Myth & Me (2014) is a sincere but ultimately dated piece, made as it was before Mandela's death last year. Referred to throughout in the present tense - and not simply for the timeless legacy he looks set to leave behind - we gain little deeper understanding of the man nor his ideals than have already been offered up by a myriad of other projects both old and new. Those asked to throw in their two cents about the impact Mandela had upon both apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa appear informed, but the outpouring of admiration loses its freshness around the halfway mark.
