Denzel Washington was recently spotted filming a highly anticipated Spike Lee film. The beloved actor‘s appearance alongside his co-star in Brooklyn reminded us that he is looking mighty fine at nearly 70 years old! Washington will turn the big 7-0 later in 2024. In the meantime, he’s barely slowed his acting career. See pics of the Oscar winner and get more details about High and Low here:

Spike Lee has had better points in his career than this one. It's a full eight years since his last legitimate hit, "Inside Man," and recent attempts at a comeback have ended up disappointing somewhat: John Boyega-starring HBO show "Da Brick" didn't get picked up beyond a pilot, indie "Red Hook Summer" failed to find much of an audience, and last year's "Oldboy" was a critical and commercial washout. But you can't keep a great director down, and Lee didn't hang about: even before "Oldboy" hit theaters, the filmmaker had taken to Kickstarter to raise the budget for another movie, called "Da Sweet Blood Of Jesus," a rare dip into the horror genre that promises to be his own unique spin on the vampire movie, described by the filmmaker as being about "human beings who are addicted to blood. Funny, sexy and bloody." The film's mostly under wraps still,...

Adapting a movie – or spinning it off – for the small screen isn’t new, but the trend has taken off in the past year with the one-two punch of NBC’s suprise hit “Hannibal” and FX’s take on “Fargo.” Critical darling “Friday Night Lights” aside, none of the TV versions have retained the creative talent behind the source material – the Coen Brothers gave their blessing to the FX series and received executive producer credits as tribute – but that’s about to change as Spike Lee sets out to make his second stab at a fictional series, following the failed pilot "Da Brick" over at HBO. Deadline reports the “Malcolm X” filmmaker will adapt his 1985 debut feature “She’s Gotta Have It” for Showtime. The half-hour series is said to take “a new contemporary look at the characters [of the original film] and will explore Lee’s unique and provocative points of view about race,...

It's time to get up close and person with our future favorite Jedi, John Boyega, the new face of "Star Wars: Episode VII."
Boyega is most famous for his role as Moses in "Attack the Block," which was also his first feature film. Moses is one of the teens who live on a South London council estate that's attacked by aliens. The first time we meet Moses and his pals, they're attempting to rob a young nurse named Samantha (Jodie Whittaker), but later they all rally and work together to fight the weirdo critters trying to take over their block.
Moses is the quiet leader of this criminally inclined crew of teens, but he eventually becomes the hero of our story. You might need subtitles for this awesome indie sci-fi -- the British slang comes fast and furious -- but it's good fun. "Attack the Block" is Joe Cornish's first feature-length film.

The rise of British actor John Boyega continues today as he’s now taken the high-profile lead role in Race – an upcoming biopic of Olympic legend Jesse Owens.
Owens was a Us track and field athlete in the 1930s, specializing in sprinting and long jump events. His fame reached epic proportions when he participated in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, winning four gold medals and becoming the most successful athlete in the entire competition. Making the triumph even more notable was the fact that Adolf Hitler had originally tried to ban all Jewish and black people from competing in the games, before a threatened boycott from a number of countries forced him to relent.

Tyson is said to be looking to cast an unknown to play him in the film, but he and wife Spicer say that they can see Kevin Spacey portraying his mentor and trainer, Cus D'Amato, and Helen Mirren as his adoptive mother, Camille Ewald... this is all according to the New York Post. Pals for a while now, Mike Tyson and Spike Lee have been trying to find a way to work together. They were initially going to collaborate on the HBO series "Da Brick," with Tyson serving as an executive producer on the series Lee was developing, but the network wound up passing on the project. However, they quickly found another way to come together at HBO. The result is "Mike Tyson: The Undisputed Truth" and it's coming to a small screen near you very soon. The first trailer has dropped for the film, and it brings into your home the stage show the pair brought to Broadway earlier this year. As you'll quickly surmise, it finds Tyson leading audiences and viewers through his own life and perspective, from the dizzying highs to the tragic lows, all with his unique personality. It'll be interesting to see what new insight, if any, will...

Spike Lee has a genuine affection for Mike Tyson that shone through when the pair spoke to the press together at the TCA summer press tour in July about "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth," a filmed version of Tyson's Broadway one-man show slated to debut on HBO on Saturday, November 16th. Lee, who directed the special, called Tyson "the most honest human being I've met in my life," and the first teaser, below, suggests a somber tone in which the former heavyweight champion will open up about his storied career and troubled history. "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth" is just the latest in a string of HBO projects Lee's worked on -- in addition to "When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts" and "If God Is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise," Lee had boxing drama pilot "Da Brick" at the premium network, though it didn't make it to series.

HBO has bought TV rights to Mike Tyson’s one-man show, Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth. HBO Films will film the show in July for debut on HBO later in the year. The stage production features “Iron Mike” recounting his life’s highs and lows in his signature candid style. Chicago – When you’re in as much of a ratings struggle as NBC, it makes sense to shake things up and that’s exactly what they’re doing in the Fall with a new show or an old show in a new time every single night of the week. “Chicago Fire,” “Revolution,” “The Biggest Loser,” “Parks and Recreation,” and “Parenthood” are moving. “Community” is being held until a midseason, 13-episode run. No decision yet made on “Celebrity Apprentice” or “Hannibal,” which isn’t that surprising as they are mid-season shows anyway although it shouldn’t give fans of either program confidence as NBC announced a midseason schedule as well and they’re not on it. Anything could still happen with either program however and they could be held as replacements for shows that fail. That may be the best shot for “Hannibal” fans now. The best new show on the...

Since his debut in Attack The Block 2 years ago, here in the USA, we've been anxious to see John Boyega (aka Baby Denzel) in another film, or even a TV project. Just something else. We came closest last year, when HBO ordered a pilot of Spike Lee's Da Brick, which Boyega was tapped to star in. But, apparently, HBO must not have cared for whatever Spike showed them (or maybe there was some other reason), because they passed on the pilot, and Da Brick never went to series. I'd still love to check it out, so here's hoping that HBO eventually releases the pilot so that audiences can see what could have been. The other project Boyega signed up for after Attack The Block, was a TV...

Um, yay? According to a Deadline report, "Entourage" creator Doug Ellin is nearing completion on his "Entourage" movie script, which would presumably complete the heart-stopping cliffhanger of the show's final season, with screaming Jewish stereotype Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven), elevated to studio mogul status. After Ellin completes his screenplay, he will submit it to executive producers Mark Wahlberg and Steven Levinson and await the greenlight from HBO. We're already all tingly with anticipation. Ellin has been involved in a number of projects since "Entourage" left the air a year ago, Deadline notes, having worked on a comedy pilot with Ed Burns that wasn't picked up, and another HBO project, the Spike Lee/John Ridley boxing drama "Da Brick" which saw a similar fate (that was the project set to star John Boyega from "Attack the Block" – allow it). The report describes the project as starting about six months after...

For all their success so far, the Marvel movies have, aside from a few smallish parts, been a pretty lilywhite affair to date: only Samuel L. Jackson was a significant minority presence in "The Avengers." But signs are that the studio aren't going to keep that up for too long: yesterday, it was reported that the company are actively moving ahead with a movie about "Black Panther," the African prince-turned-crimefighter, and are targeting a release in 2014 or 2015.
Marvel has denied the reports, but this wouldn't be the first time they've denied something that turned out to be bang-on, and Latino Review's track record with Marvel scoops is pretty strong, so it seems to be a good bet that there'll be an official announcement about a "Black Panther" movie before too long. Which of course leads to the question: Who could play the character?

HBO decided yesterday not to move forward with its planned adaptation of Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections, which at first glance seemed strange: It was a high-profile, high-prestige project with a lot of big-name talent attached, including Ewan McGregor, Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest, and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Noah Baumbach adapted and directed the pilot. But in recent years, HBO has passed on a lot of shows in the same mold — shows that sound fancy or terrific or have star power or intrigue. This year already, HBO has declined to pick up 40 and Da Brick, both from Entourage producer Doug Ellin. 40, sort of like Entourage: The Middle Aged Years, would have starred Ed Burns, Michael Imperioli, Michael Rapaport, and Adrian Pasdar. Da Brick, which Spike Lee was producing and would have directed, was about an up-and-coming boxer. Going back just a little bit further to the 2011–2012 development season, there was...

Well, call it karma or something. While we were thrilled that HBO picked up "True Detective," a new crime series that will star Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, with Cary Fukunaga ("Jane Eyre," "Sin Nombre") directing, it looks like another starry project unfortunately won't be going forward.
The network has passed on Noah Baumbach's "The Corrections," produced by Scott Rudin. Based on the acclaimed novel by Jonathan Franzen, the project lined up an incredile slate of talent with Ewan McGregor, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest, Rhys Ifans and Greta Gerwig on board for the story of a dysfunctional and repressed Midwestern family. Ambitions were very, very high for the project which, if the two-hour pilot had passed the test at HBO, was being planned for four ten-episode seasons, presumably greatly expanding the scope of the book. But for whatever reason, HBO has decided not to move on.

When "Attack the Block" hit screens last summer, it almost immediately became everyone's favorite new cult hit. While we're still waiting with bated breath to find out what writer/director Joe Cornish will do next, someone who's taking considerably less time to line up his future projects is Atb's lead actor, John Boyega.
That was Boyega's debut performance, and he's since also been seen in "Junkhearts" (which got a small U.K. release last year), but it looked like his breakout role was going to be in Spike Lee's pilot "Da Brick." Attack the Block star John Boyega is set to join Thandie Newton, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Dominic Cooper in a new feature film Half of a Yellow Sun, to be directed by Biyi Bandele.
Based on the novel by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Half of a Yellow Sun recreates a seminal moment in modern African history - Biafra's impassioned struggle to establish an independent republic in Nigeria, and the chilling violence that followed.
The story weaves together the lives of characters swept up in the turbulence of the decade. John will play Ugwu, a houseboy employed by a university professor (Ejiofor) full of revolutionary zeal. Olanna ( Newton) is the professor's beautiful mistress, who has abandoned her life of privilege in Lagos for a dusty university town and the charisma of her new lover. And Richard (Dominic Cooper) is a shy young Englishman in thrall to Olanna's twin sister, an enigmatic figure who refuses to belong to anyone.

Joe Cornish’s alien invasion action comedy Attack the Block was my favorite film of last year, and it made a bonafide star out of lead actor John Boyega. The Brit immediately capitalized on that film’s success, snagging the lead role in Spike Lee’s HBO pilot, “Da Brick.” Unfortunately that show didn’t go to series, but [...]

Mike Tyson will be launching a new one-man show in Las Vegas next month. The ex-boxer will perform a monologue about his life in Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth - Live on Stage. Of his hopes for the show, Tyson revealed to Reuters: "I hope people are entertained, and happy. I hope they get to know certain things. My story's not pretty. There's lots of ugly stuff - not knowing if my mother ever loved me, or who my father was." Much of the show will focus on Tyson's childhood, including the differences between him and his older brother, who became a doctor as the teenaged Tyson fell into a life of crime. Earlier this month, Tyson also pitched an autobiographical TV series called Da Brick to HBO, directed by Spike Lee. (more)...

It appears that Spike Lee's boxing drama Da Brick will not be coming to TV screens near you anytime soon after all.Attack The Block star John Boyega was attached as lead in the series based loosely on the life of a young Mike Tyson, with Tyson himself involved as a producer. The trio of Tyson, Lee and Boyega was enough to spark widespread excitement when the pilot order was made public but apparently HBO have now passed on the show and it will not continue to series....

HBO has passed on Mike Tyson's drama pilot Da Brick. The cable network has opted not to go forward with the project, according to Deadline. Based loosely on Tyson's own life, Da Brick was directed by Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing). Newcomer John Boyega starred as aspiring young boxer Donnie, while Tyson executive produced alongside Lee, John Ridley, Jim Lefkowitz and Entourage creator Doug Ellin. Earlier this month, HBO also declined to pick up Ellin's comedy (more)...

While Spike Lee has conquered both the big and small screen with feature films and documentaries, when it comes to television series', he's had far less luck. In 2004 he tried to get "Sucker Free City" up over at Showtime, a series that would've chronicled the disparate groups at play in the gentrification of San Francisco. After a two hour pilot (which wound up being screened at Tiff) it didn't go much further. And it seems another small screen effort has been put on hold before it ever really got started.
Deadline reports that HBO has passed on the pilot for "Da Brick," which would've been led by "Attack The Block" star John Boyega. In the works last year, the show found Lee teaming with “Entourage” creator Doug Ellin, with Mike Tyson acting as a producer. The Story is set in Newark, New Jersey and is partially inspired by Tyson's youth,...

Back in the summer of last year, there was talk of a new HBO series in the works from filmmaker Spike Lee (Oldboy) called "Da Brick", inspired in part by the early life of Mike Tyson. A young Mike surrogate was even found: Attack The Block's John Boyega, which honestly was a stroke of casting genius. But alas, it's not meant to be. Deadline reports that HBO has passed on the series from producers Lee, Tyson, writer John Ridley, and Doug Ellin ("Entourage"). The news...

Doug Ellin is 0-for-2 this pilot season. HBO has passed on its Spike Lee/Ellin-produced boxing drama Da Brick, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The premium cable network has opted to pass on the boxing drama, which was described as a contemporary explorating of what it means to be a young, black man in a supposedly post-racial America. The news comes more than a week after the network passed on Ellin's 40, a comedy pilot about a group of guys (Ed Burns, Michael Rapaport, Michael Imperioli and Adrian Pasdar) exploring life after 40. HBO’s drama pilot Da Brick will not be going forward. The pay cable network just passed on the project, executive produced by Spike Lee, John Ridley, Doug Ellin and Mike Tyson. Written by Ridley and directed by Lee, Da Brick was inspired in part by Tyson’s youth and explored what it means to be a young, black man in supposedly post-racial America. The central character of troubled aspiring young boxer Donnie was played by newcomer John Boyega. Ellin, Ridley, Lee, Tyson and Jim Lefkowitz executive produced. The move comes on the heels of HBO also opting not to go forward with Ellin’s comedy pilot 40.

Exclusive: HBO has decided not move forward with 40, the comedy pilot from Entourage creator Doug Ellin. The single-camera ensemble originally revolved around four lifelong friends — played in the pilot by Ed Burns, Michael Rapaport, Michael Imperioli and Adrian Pasdar — who help each other navigate life at 40, which isn’t all they expected it to be. After the pilot was shot in the fall, HBO and Ellin took a stab at reworking the project with rewrites, but the network ultimately opted not to proceed. Ellin is under an overall deal at HBO and will continue to develop for the pay cable network. In addition to 40, he also executive produced the HBO drama pilot Da Brick last year, which remains in contention.

In 2003, with just a few hundred pounds, actor Femi Oguns set up Britain's first 'black' drama school. It's now a powerhouse in the promotion of black talent to the entertainment industry here and abroad
Sandwiched between a hipster pub and an empty shop front, you are likely to hear the Identity drama school in east London before you see it. As I loiter outside, the passing traffic is punctuated with the hubbub of student recitals, which filter down from the window above. It may not compete with Rada's lavish Bloomsbury setting or Lamda's 150-year-old history, but what goes on behind these walls serves an arguably more vital and immediate purpose than any of the country's more established drama schools.
Inside, a class of students line up, their backs pushed up against the walls of the studio, the room already thick with the warmth and odour of hard work. "In," bellows...

In their latest collaboration, director Spike Lee and writer John Ridley have teamed for an HBO biopic of Marion Barry, with Eddie Murphy attached to play the larger-then-life former Washington D.C. mayor. The HBO Films project, first reported by the Washington Post, is currently in development. Ridley is writing the script based on several pieces of source material, including the 1994 book Dream City by D.C. journalists Harry Jaffe and Tom Sherwood who will serve as consultants. Lee on board to direct. The two are executive producing with Murphy. HBO previously developed a Marion Barry biopic a decade ago with Jamie Foxx attached to star and Chris Rock to executive produce, but the project didn’t go forward. Barry, currently a member of the Council of the District Of Columbia, did two terms as a mayor of D.C., from 1979-91 and 1995-99, separated by a six-month stint in...

Joe Cornish is considering sequel, American remake and TV spin-off ideas for his sci-fi hit about London teens battling aliens
Attack the Block director Joe Cornish has suggested that his aliens v adolescents sci-fi drama could get a sequel, an American remake and/or a TV spin-off.
Cornish, who was speaking to IFC News at last week's New York Comic-Con, said that he had already received a number of ideas for a potential sequel from Attack the Block's star, John Boyega, who plays Moses, leader to a group of London teens who repel an alien invasion.
"He has this image of a bigger alien attack on London, as if the attack we saw in Attack the Block was just the [first] wave and there's another wave of bigger creatures," Cornish said. "He had an image of Moses on a police horse. So he's on a horse leading this army of...

While some people were already gathering in line for the Avengers panel that will happen later today, others chose the slightly less crowded but just as excitable Attack the Block panel with writer/director Joe Cornish and stars John Boyega and Luke Treadaway. Attack the Block, if you were unaware, is one of the best action films this summer and it's currently on its way to be a cult hit for generations to come.
Joe Cornish's boyish excitement relaxed the atmosphere, bringing the panel into more of a conversation among friends rather than an artist lecturing pupils on his talent. It definitely could have gone that way though- I suspect that Cornish is on his way to becoming a cult director (he just wrote Adventures of Tin Tin which opens later this year). He easily joked about the technical difficulties that the room was having; poor microphones, misplaced clips,...
