Though he’s often associated with intense roles like his Oscar-nominated turns in “Revolutionary Road” and “Nocturnal Animals,” Michael Shannon is funny. That’s now been well established. From scene-stealing cameos in “They Came Together” and “The Night Before” to his hilarious/terrifying reading of a viral sorority letter to often being the highlight of press junkets with his trademark dry delivery, the actor has proven his comedy bona fides. So, hey Lorne Michaels, give him his shot on “Saturday Night Live” already.
Asked if he’s ever been asked to host the iconic sketch show, Shannon replies, “I think Lorne Michaels is scared of me or thinks I smell funny or something. The guy won’t arrest me.”
I can personally vouch that Shannon smells fine and there’s nothing for Michaels to be afraid of. And the actor seems a perfect fit for the show; “SNL” often likes...

As TV academy voters fill out their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots, they will have to consider 163 shows for Best Drama Series. This is only down by eight compared to last year. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members can now not let their selections exceed the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which will be eight in this case.
2020 and 2022 champ “Succession” is in the hunt for its third win in this category and will potentially only have to fend off two of its seven rivals from last year. “Better Call Saul” and “Yellowjackets” returned in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2022 to May 31, 2023, while “Euphoria,” “Severance,” “Squid Game,” and “Stranger Things” did not. The last remaining 2022 contender, “Ozark,” officially finished its four-season run last April. Also back in the running are former winners “The Handmaid’s Tale” (2017) and “The Crown” (2021).

This story about Michael Shannon and his two recent projects, “George & Tammy” and “Waco: The Aftermath” first appeared in the Limited Series / TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
A tweet recently circulated asking, “Who is an actor who may not be the main character, but always makes any movie better?” The answer for many was Michael Shannon, whose tense, often explosive performances frequently inspire listicles ranking his roles by their degree of creepy terror, such as the gentle paranoia of Curtis Laforche in “Take Shelter” and the repressive fanaticism of Nelson Van Alden in “Boardwalk Empire.”
Now the 48-year-old actor has moved center stage with standout lead performances in two Showtime limited series: “George & Tammy,” in which he plays the outsize country rabble-rouser George Jones with masterful vulnerability (opposite Jessica Chastain) and “Waco: The Aftermath,” capturing the slow-burn inner turmoil of FBI negotiator Gary Noesner.

“I guess they’re polar opposites,” says Michael Shannon while discussing his two Showtime series, “George and Tammy” and “Waco: The Aftermath.” “One’s a train-wreck country singer and the other one’s this stand-up FBI fellow. That’s interesting, right? Getting to explore different extremes like that. I find both of these people very compelling. I find George Jones compelling because he’s an artist and probably one of the greatest singers in the history of our country. I find Gary [Noesner] compelling because he’s one of the greatest negotiators in the history of our country.”
In “George and Tammy,” the actor plays opposite Oscar winner Jessica Chastain, portraying the tumultuous marriage of legendary country music superstars George Jones and Tammy Wynette. “I just think she’s one of the best,” he says of his co-star. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

It’s been pretty well advertised by now that, starting in the third quarter of 2023, Showtime will no longer be a standalone streaming platform. Its content will be merged onto Paramount+, creating a new tier called “Paramount+ with Showtime.”
Paramount previously offered users the opportunity to bundle Paramount+ with Showtime for a lower price. Users could pick the ad-supported Paramount+ Essential tier with Showtime for $11.99 per month, or upgrade to Paramount+ Premium with Showtime for $14.99. The latter option gives users ad-free streaming, and a 24/7 live feed of their local CBS affiliate as well.
But following the announcement of the changes coming in the third quarter of the year, Paramount dropped the price for the Premium tier, so users can get the cheaper $11.99 monthly rate for the Paramount+ and Showtime bundle whether they sign up for Essential or Premium. This April 19 marks the 30th anniversary of the violent end of the siege of the religious sect, the Branch Davidians lead by David Koresh. Eighty people died in the fire set in their compound outside of Waco by members of the cult after law enforcement had attempted to flush them out by introducing tear gas. The standoff had begun 51 days earlier when Koresh and members of this sect ambushed Atf agents who had arrived at the complex to executed federal warrants on charges of illegal manufacture and possession of machine guns and destructive devices. Four Atf agents were killed along with six members of the sect.

Showtime dropped the first episode in its newest series, “Waco: The Aftermath,” where we learn about the events that followed the Siege of Waco in February 1993. After a 51-day siege outside the Mt. Carmel compound, where the self-proclaimed Messiah David Koresh (Taylor Kitsch) and almost 80 of his followers (women and children included) were housed, the Atf and FBI sent a tank to destroy the house and deployed tear gas. The house went up in flames, killing almost everyone inside, Koresh included. Of the people who survived, Showtime’s newest series presents a look into what became of these defendants, whether they were doomed from the start or were given a fighting chance. Here’s what happens in the first episode.

Released to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the 1993 siege at the Branch Davidian compound outside Waco, Texas, which led to the deaths of David Koresh and 75 of his followers, Waco: The Aftermath picks up where Paramount Network's 2018 limited series left off. The five-episode sequel reunites viewers with FBI negotiator Gary Noesner (Michael Shannon), who learns of a new threat that has emerged from within America's far-right militia movement. Meanwhile, attorney Dan Cogdell (Giovanni Ribisi) works to defend the Branch Davidians in court, but he must contend with a hostile judge (David Costabile) and a group of defendants who continue to stand by their leader even after his death.

Thirty years after the deadly standoff between federal law enforcement and the Branch Davidian sect in Waco, Texas, even the most fundamental facts of the tragedy remain contested. Both sides insist the other initiated the initial volley of gunfire that killed four agents and six sectarians. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms insists David Koresh and his followers later set fire to their compound, killing another 48 adults and 28 children in an act of mass suicide. The surviving Branch Davidians maintain that the FBI was the aggressor, and the deadly fire resulted from the Atf’s decision to deploy stun grenades and tear gas.
The decades since have created only tighter knots of recrimination. But you might not get that impression from watching “Waco,” the 2018 Paramount Network miniseries about the nearly eight-week standoff and that fatal inferno. In the hands of brothers John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle, who wrote...

It’s still open season on reexamining political and pop culture events that shaped recent history and offer an illuminating perspective on the current landscape. And at Showtime, “Waco” still provides plenty of food for thought. Five years ago, Taylor Kitsch and Michael Shannon led an impressive cast in a solid yet flawed limited series about the tragic 51-day standoff between federal agents and the Branch Davidian sect.

Plot: This topical series focuses on the fallout of the Waco disaster: the trials of the surviving members of the Brand Davidian sect, which forces them to explore their own complicity in supporting a young Vernon Howell’s ascent to become their prophet David Koresh; the birth of the militia movement and more specifically a critical look at what happens when a marginalized population, disenfranchised by the federal government gives rise to homegrown terrorist, Timothy McVeigh.
Review: Back in 2018, Showtime’s six-episode series Waco recreated the tragic siege of the Branch Davidian compound in Texas by the FBI. With a stellar cast led by Michael Shannon as FBI negotiator Gary Noesner and Taylor Kitsch as Branch Davidian cult leader David Koresh, Waco was met with positive yet mixed reviews. Many felt the workmanlike drama was too sympathetic towards Koresh and his followers but praised Kitsch’s performance and that of the ensemble cast.

Nobody came out of the 1993 Waco tragedy looking good. Not David Koresh, the messianic religious/cult leader who stockpiled illegal weapons and married underage girls in order to spread his seed for a coming apocalypse. Not the Atf, which went ahead with its raid on Koresh’s Branch Davidian compound despite knowing that they were expected, eliminating any element of surprise. And not the FBI, whose hostage rescue and negotiation teams were constantly at odds over both means and ends. In the end, 86 people – 82 Davidians and four Atf agents – were killed.

Before Michael Shannon returns as villain, General Zod, in The Flash, he makes a return to deal with the embolden domestic terrorists in the follow-up show to Showtime’s six-part mini-series, Waco. The new chapters in the story follow the events in the wake of the siege at Mount Carmel. The focus centers around the trials of the surviving members of the Branch Davidians and anger from the public who felt the feds had gone a little too far. Collider has the report on the new trailer that’s been released days after the teaser on the new series.
Set to a cover of “Losing My Religion,” the footage kicks off with Noesner explaining how Waco has only united civil war-minded domestic terrorists and other individuals who lack faith in the American government and justice system. The result is a rise in further incidents and more animosity toward the FBI in particular.
