Colin Farrell is far from the first person to make his mark playing famous Batman rogue The Penguin in HBO’s aptly named new series “The Penguin.”
Of all the superheroes, Batman’s villains are the most recognizable. Among them The Penguin stands as possibly the most recognizable behind only the Joker. That’s led to quite a number of actors getting a crack at the character over the years beginning way back in the mid-60s.
There have been a few one-off performances in TV or animated movies where people lent their voice, but these 10 performers made their mark on the character especially felt. Before you get too deep into “The Penguin,” go back and appreciate the long history of the Batman villain on the big and small screen.

Colin Farrell is back to reprise his Oswald Cobblepot (Oz Cobb) role in the newly released The Penguin series. Since its premiere, the show has been getting a positive response, but the titular character has also been quick to get the label of a progressive symbol for LGBTQ+ representation.

Recently, many fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise the show for its approach, in contrast to Batman, who some claim has been lagging in this aspect. While the live-action is yet to showcase the Caped Crusader as an ally, fans are forgetting that he has already been the one in the comics.
Fans Hail The Penguin for Being LGBTQ+ Ally
Set one week after the events of The Batman (2022), the series explores the rise to power of Oswald “Oz” Cobb in Gotham City’s criminal underworld, revealing how his obsession with gaining control becomes something uncontrollable.

Despite the launch of DC Studios and the new Dcu, Matt Reeves is seemingly proceeding with "The Batman Epic Crime Saga" as planned.
The Penguin premiered to rave reviews on HBO yesterday evening, while The Batman - Part II is just a couple of years away. Talking to Entertainment Weekly, the writer and director started by addressing the franchise's expansion from theaters to television.
"I always wanted to make sure that each of the movies that we did with Rob, that the central arc, the emotional arc of the story would be Batman and Bruce's," he explained. "Then when I was talking to Warner Bros. about signing for TV, I said what will be exciting to me is to take characters [where] there's not enough real estate in a movie to cover their story in full and to really dig into them."

In the comic books, Alberto Falcone is revealed to be the Holiday Killer in the pages of Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's classic Batman: The Long Halloween.
However, The Penguin sees Oz Cobb gun Carmine Falcone's son down about 15 minutes into the premiere! The door is now presumably closed on that iconic storyline being adapted by Matt Reeves, but according to director and executive producer Craig Zobel, Alberto's death was always the plan.
"It was always the plan for Alberto to die," he told Screen Rant. "It was an addition, I would say, to Colin's Penguin. With Oz in the movie, you don't see this as much just because there's not as much time, but here we get to see him in a [new] scenario."

It’s been more than two years since Matt Reeves’s ‘The Batman,’ starring Robert Pattinson, hit theaters. The film received acclaim from critics and audiences alike, who praised its dark atmosphere and emphasis on Batman’s detective skills.
Reeves is now working on a sequel called ‘The Batman – Part II,’ which is scheduled for release in October 2026. In the meantime, fans can enjoy ‘The Penguin’ series, which just premiered its first episode.
‘The Penguin’ takes place just a week after the events of ‘The Batman Part 1,’ following the death of Carmine Falcone. In this shifting power dynamic, Penguin seeks to claim the void left behind. Oswald will go head-to-head with Sofia Falcone, and Colin Farrell has described the series as “gruesome” and “dark.”
The pilot episode certainly lived up to this description, showcasing the extreme lengths Penguin is willing to go to in order to dominate the city.

Colin Farrell is damn near unrecognizable as the Penguin thanks to the incredible prosthetics and bodysuit created by artist Mike Marino, which apparently included a penguin penis. Pardon?
While speaking with People, Farrell explained that one scene in the series called for his character to appear naked. “Marino is so twisted and brilliant. He was like, ‘I made you a penguin penis,’” Farrell said. “I said, ‘Really? They’re not even going to see it. I don’t know if I want to walk on set with a penguin penis.’ And he was like, ‘No, no, no, dude. It’s detachable, it’s Velcro. It’s got a beak at the end of it.’ So I had a penguin penis.“
Farrell went on to credit Marino for making the whole thing work. “If it wasn’t for Mike’s design, I’m telling you now, if it was just me...

It's the season of the villains in the world of comic book adaptations. Fresh off the release of Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along comes The Penguin, bringing one of DC's greatest antagonists to the small screen. And let's not forget that DC Studios will also be releasing Joker: Folie à Deux in theaters this year.

The upcoming HBO and Max series is a spinoff of Matt Reeves' The Batman, the critically-acclaimed 2022 movie which starred Robert Pattinson as The Dark Knight. Colin Farrell reprises his role as Oswald Cobblepot - or Oz Cobb as this universe calls him - as the character attempts to make a name for himself in a city without a crime boss; a city that is vulnerable after The Riddler's attack.

When director Matt Reeves was writing “The Batman,” and effectively taking the franchise reigns with what was expected to be the first of a trilogy of films featuring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader, he knew he wanted his Gotham to be a more grounded cinematic world. Inspired by the tone of Frank Miller’s comicbook series “Batman: Year One,” in which the chaotic real world of 1970s New York was a recognizable underpinning, Reeves wanted his Gotham to be recognizable to a modern audience — a direct reflection of our own broken and divisive times. That tone, more so than interlocking narrative, would be the glue.
It’s a vision Reeves had always imagined could neatly spin-off into an HBO-like series, especially when switching out of Batman’s point-of-view in the movies, and exploring the world through the eyes of one of the Rogues Gallery villains.

This Thursday, HBO will premiere The Penguin, a new TV show spun off from director Matt Reeves' 2022 film The Batman. But don't expect Bruce Wayne to show up; this series is all about one of his most iconic nemeses: Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, played by Colin Farrell under layers of prosthetics and makeup. In the first movie, the Penguin is a low-level enforcer in the mob. He'll be making some big moves in the new series.

The Batman released in 2022 became yet another iteration of the popular DC superhero Batman and the story of how Bruce Wayne's childhood trauma changed his life forever. Businessman and bachelor by day and superhero by night, Batman cleans up the consistently messy streets of crime-ridden Gotham City thus facing a plethora of foes like The Penguin.
The Penguin or Oswald "Oz" Cobb, was one of several classic Batman villains to appear in the film portrayed by Hollywood icon Colin Farrell. Although he was designated to being one of Carmine Falcone's henchmen, all of that is about to change in the upcoming HBO and Max miniseries titled, The Penguin.
In anticipation of this addition to The Batman lore, we've compiled a list of 5 characters from the film we hope to see in the show.

From the beginning, it was expected that The Batman would be the first part of a new trilogy. However, no one could have anticipated that a new DC Universe would take shape in the months after the release of the first movie. We’re still awaiting the release of The Batman Part II, but director Matt Reeves confirmed to Collider that he still plans on completing the trilogy.

With “The Penguin” with Colin Farrell premiering on Max next Friday, there’s plenty of buzz swirling about Matt Reeves‘ follow-up to 2022’s “The Batman.” Fans already know it hits theaters on October 2, 2026, but Reeves and Warner Bros. have remained quiet about anything else about the film (outside of Farrell reprising his role as Ozwald Cobblepot). For instance, will Zoë Kravitz‘s Catwoman be back?

Shortly after James Gunn announced the first "chapter" of the new Dcu slate last year, rumors began to circulate that a direct sequel to 2005's Constantine was in the works, and Warner Bros. would later confirm that the project was indeed in the early stages of development.
Since then, we've had conflicting reports relating to the movie's status, and since it's pretty much been radio silence since last February, it was generally assumed that the sequel had been scrapped.
However, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura has now revealed that the script has been completed... and he just needs to work up the courage to read it!
"You know, it's in my inbox right now. Funny enough, I'm too scared to read it, though," he told ComicBook.com. "I want it to be good so bad. I probably read it in the next few days. When I get on an airplane."

Colin Farrell made his debut as "Oz Cobb" in Matt Reeves' The Batman, but only appeared in a handful of scenes. The Irish actor is set to return as the iconic DC Comics villain for HBO's The Penguin spin-off series, and it sounds like the greatly extended period of time spent under the heavy prosthetics used to transform him into the titular character took its toll.
During an interview with Total Film, Farrell was asked about potentially reprising the role for a second season.
“I don’t know, man,” he responded. “Don’t get me wrong – I loved it – but it got in on me a little bit. By the end of it, I was bitching and moaning to anyone who would listen to me that I f*cking wanted it to be finished. “When I was finished I was like, ‘I never want to put that [flipping] suit on again,” Colin Farrell has said of his role in the upcoming TV show, The Penguin.
The crime-ridden world of Matt Reeves’ The Batman is set to expand with the upcoming TV spin-off, The Penguin, due to air this month. One person who found the show particularly oppressive, though, is title star Colin Farrell, who in an interview with Total Film was candid about the toll the production took.
Prefacing his comments by saying how grateful he was to be playing Oswald Cobblepot, one of Batman’s most famous villains, he then expressed his doubts about returning to the role for a second season. “I don’t know, man,” Farrell said. “Don’t get me wrong – I loved it – but it got in on me a little bit. Despite looking nothing like Richard Kind, Colin Farrell is a very good Penguin and the breakout star of "The Batman." Penguin is the funny, ruthless, Spanish-grammar-knowing crime boss who played both Batman and Gordon like fools. It's no wonder he is the first character from Matt Reeves' poorly-named universe to grace our screens again. While we wait for "The Batman Part II" to get (eventually) released, it's time to prepare for "The Penguin."
Already, before season 1 even premieres, there are talks of a continuation. However, when asked by Total Film if "The Penguin" season 2 could happen, Farrell expressed doubts about his desire to endure this character again for one specific reason — the makeup.

Colin Farrell recently told Total Film magazine that he’s not sure about returning as Oswald Cobb for a potential second season of “The Penguin” given what a burden it is to emotionally and physically transform into the infamous Batman villain. Farrell debuted as the gangster in 2022’s “The Batman.” The first season of “The Penguin” kicks off this month on HBO and Max.
“I don’t know, man,” Farrell said. “Don’t get me wrong – I loved it – but it got in on me a little bit. We will soon be thrust back into the Gotham City underworld with The Penguin, the upcoming HBO series starring Colin Farrell as the titular mobster. However, the big question has been will Batman make an appearance in the series? According to Matt Reeves, who executive produces the series, neither Batman nor Bruce Wayne will appear in The Penguin, but they did consider it.
“I’m a point-of-view filmmaker,” Reeves told Total Film. “When I’m doing a Batman story, Batman and Bruce is going to be the main point of view. To explore the rogues gallery, they could never get the real estate we can do in a series. So Batman is in this [show] only as a sense that he’s a presence. You’re aware that all of these events began because of the Riddler, but the Riddler doesn’t appear and Batman doesn’t appear.“

Colin Farrell wants to take a breather — literally. It can’t possibly be easy to inhale and exhale when buried under prosthetics for an entire season of TV.
The star of HBO’s upcoming “The Batman” spinoff show “The Penguin” told Total Film that his only hesitation to a possible Season 2 would be what happens in the makeup chair. “The Batman Part II” is currently deep in development. Although the film has been delayed by nearly a year, we continue to receive regular updates.
Robert Pattinson is set to return as Bruce Wayne, with Zoë Kravitz reprising her role as Selina Kyle, also known as Catwoman. Andy Serkis will once again play Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler and confidant, while Colin Farrell returns as the Penguin, adding depth to this new chapter of the Batman universe. While most of the cast was confirmed months ago, one role remains uncertain: Barry Keoghan’s Joker.
Keoghan appeared as an “Unseen Arkham Prisoner” in “The Batman” (2022). Director Matt Reeves later confirmed that this character was indeed the Joker. A deleted scene featuring Keoghan’s Joker interacting with Robert Pattinson’s Batman was released by Warner Bros. on March 24, 2022, three weeks after the film’s premiere, and it was well-received by fans.

Imagine a world where Willem Dafoe’s prowling as the Joker in DC movies—sounds like a dream, right? Yet, Warner Bros. seems to have overlooked a no-brainer casting move that fans have been screaming for. It’s almost criminal! Dafoe’s uniquely twisted intensity could have turned the Joker into a force of chaotic brilliance.

Matt Reeves is teasing that The Batman 2 will dig even deeper into a specific aspect of the first movie, but hold onto your Bat-capes—this might be more of a trap than a treat. As everyone is aware by now, Matt Reeves’ The Batman was a huge hit. However, even though it was always set in a different universe from the main Dceu at the time, it appears that it is also not going to be connected to James Gunn’s new Dcu, as it will have another Batman there.

One of the most important parts of Gotham’s history is the Court of Owls, the secret society which has been controlling the city since its inception. While many have speculated that Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II might introduce the popular antagonists, Farrell’s The Penguin might just lay the groundwork for it.

“The Penguin” hits Max later this month on September 19, which sees Colin Farrell reprise his role as gangster Oswald Cobblepot from 2022’s “The Batman.” That means Matt Reeves will start production on that film’s sequel soon, right? Yes, indeed. Variety reports that the director confirmed to SFX Magazine that “we’re finished up the script now” for “The Batman Part II,” and “the plan is to shoot next year.” That makes sense, as Warner Bros.

Robert Pattinson is all set to return as Bruce Wayne in The Batman – Part II. Matt Reeves, who helmed the first film, recently revealed that the script for the sequel is almost finished and that they would be filming it this year. He also dropped hints at the possible villain for the sequel, terming the film a mystery that delves into the corruption of Gotham.
While many villains such as the Swamp Thing and Gentleman Ghost were rumored to have been included, Reeves’ statements about exposing the deeper corruption in Gotham have led fans to speculate that the Court of Owls might appear in the film. If that happens, Pattinson would be the only Batman actor in the films to have faced this foe.

Matt Reeves has been chatting about his plan for The Batman Part II, and offered some early hints as to its direction.
Matt Reeves is hard at work on The Batman Part II, his follow up to the 2022 noir-infused take on the Dark Knight that starred Robert Pattinson in the lead role.
The film released to general enthusiasm and made over $750m at the global box office, doing enough to warrant a sequel. Praise was particularly focused on the way Reeves and his collaborators created a stylishly-dark take on Gotham City while retaining a rather grounded feel. That’s a tricky feat to manage, especially when your film is focused around a guy running round dressed like a giant bat, but manage it they did.
A deeper exploration of Gotham seems to be on Reeves’ mind as he makes final adjustments to the script ahead of production next year. The...

Fans have been anxiously awaiting the release of The Batman Part II, but the project has been rather slow to start as director Matt Reeves wants to get it exactly right. While speaking with SFX Magazine (via ComicBookMovie), Reeves dropped a few slight yet tantalizing tidbits about the upcoming sequel.
“We’ve shared [the script] as we’ve been going along with DC, and they’re super excited,” Reeves said. “It’s going to dig into the epic story about deeper corruption, and it goes into places [Bruce Wayne] couldn’t even anticipate in the first one. The seeds of where this goes are all in the first movie & it expands in a way that will show you aspects of the character you never got to see. Batman is constantly battling these forces. But those forces can’t be entirely exorcised. So the next movie delves deeper into that.” Corruption. Mystery. Batman. I like it.
