One of Kurt Cobain’s most beloved guitars, seen in Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video, sold for 4.5 million at auction Sunday in New York, Julien’s Auctions announced.
The guitar — a 1969 Fender Competition Mustang in a color known as Lake Placid Blue that was owned by the Cobain family — was previously displayed as part of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay’s extensive collection of rock memorabilia prior to the auction, the Associated Press previously reported. On Sunday, it was the Jim Irsay Collection that ultimately made the winning...

Nirvana is not quite to Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” as Prince was to Tim Burton’s 1989 version of “Batman.” But even with only one oldie being used instead of an entire new song score, the new film is being identified with primarily one musician, thanks to Kurt Cobain’s “Something in the Way” appearing at prominent beginning and end points in the film as well as being alluded to in the score.
So the gloomy-sounding song is experience something in the way of a comeback even outside of theaters, not surprisingly. As of this Friday afternoon writing, a week after the film’s release, “Something in the Way” sits at No. 3 on Spotify’s daily ranking of the top 50 streaming songs in the U.S., with 803,000 plays for the day, just behind the No. 1 Glass Animals and another movie-based song at No. 2, “We Don’t Care About Bruno.”

The films of the New Hollywood had a distinct way of leaving the audience on a total bummer. They could make you throw up your hands and think, "Man, the world's just bad, isn't it?" and somehow make that into a completely satisfying conclusion. It spoke truth to a world being upended, with figures of authority and the status quo constantly being challenged. Life has no happy ending, and the corrupt elite who pull the strings will get away with every bad thing they ever do. It may be depressing and horrific, but that is just the way it is. You just have to figure out a way to...

The first trailer for Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated reboot “The Batman” was downright chilling as it introduced Robert Pattinson’s take on the Caped Crusader with a gloomy, detective-infused story. But the teaser also featured something no other Batman film had showcased before: a Nirvana song.
Indeed, if you’re wondering what the song in “The Batman” is, it’s Nirvana’s “Something in the Way,” but there’s a deeper reasoning for why this particular song appears in the film.
The song, written by Kurt Cobain, appears on Nirvana’s second album “Nevermind” which was released in 1991. But it also gained prominence after a live version of the song appeared on the 1994 album “MTV Unplugged in New York” despite being cut from the initial broadcast of Nirvana’s iconic appearance on the show.

Nirvana says the man pictured as the naked baby on its Nevermind album cover has milked his child pornography claims against the band long enough.
In a new filing in federal court in Los Angeles, lawyers for the group say Spencer Elden’s second amended complaint filed Jan. 12 should be dismissed with prejudice, meaning he should be sent packing without a chance to try again.

A Los Angeles man pictured as a naked baby 30 years ago on the cover of the multimillion-selling Nirvana album Nevermind has refiled his lawsuit against the grunge-rock trio under a federal statute which allows victims of child pornography to recover damages for violations of child porn laws, according to documents obtained today.
Spencer Elden, 30, alleges that the now-defunct group, various record companies and art directors caused him to suffer “lifelong damages” by “trafficking” his image worldwide.
The suit was dismissed Jan. 3 after a judge found he had missed a deadline, but was given a chance to amend his complaint and refile within 10 days. The suit was lodged with Los Angeles federal court on Wednesday.
According to the lawsuit, defendants “knowingly produced, possessed and advertised commercial child pornography depicting Spencer, and they knowingly received value in exchange for doing so…Despite this knowledge, defendants failed to take reasonable steps to protect...

A federal judge has tossed a lawsuit brought by a man who, when he was a baby, was featured on the cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind album more than 30 years ago.
Spencer Elden sued Nirvana, record companies, Courtney Love and others last summer, claiming that the album cover violated federal criminal child pornography laws and was “commercial sexual exploitation.”
Elden’s parents never signed a release authorizing the use of the photos taken of the four-month-old baby in a Pasadena aquatic center in 1990 and Elden received no compensation, his lawyers alleged.
U.S. District Judge Fernando M. Olguin on Monday granted the defendants motion to dismiss the lawsuit. But the judge also said that Elden would get “one last opportunity” to amend his complaint by Jan. 13.
In their motion to dismiss, the defendants attorneys argued that Elden’s claims were time-barred by the statute of limitations. But they also contended...

The lawsuit filed by the Nevermind baby accusing Nirvana and others of child pornography has been dismissed.
In a ruling issued Monday Jan. 3, Judge Fernando M. Oral arguments regarding the motion had been set for Jan. 20, and Elden’s legal team had been given a deadline of Dec. 30 to respond.

Nirvana’s legal team has finally responded to the lawsuit filed by the Nevermind baby this past summer, writing in a response filed Wednesday that Spencer Elden’s child pornography claims are both meritless and well past the statute of limitations.
In August, nearly 30 years after the release of Nevermind, the now-30-year-old Elden sued the band, Cobain’s estate, photographer Kurt Weddle, and record labels, claiming each “knowingly produced, possessed, and advertised commercial child pornography,” and that they “failed to take reasonable steps to protect Spencer and prevent his widespread sexual exploitation,...

Weezer’s self-titled debut, a.k.a. the Blue Album, is one of the most enduring artifacts of the alt-rock age, winning teenage hearts in generation after generation. Released in 1994, it’s the geeky, equally angsty little brother of Pearl Jam’s Ten and Nirvana’s Nevermind, somehow both more sincere and more ironic than its predecessors, and in some ways bolder in its disregard for the old rules of rock.
To some suspicious music fans at the time, it seemed like Weezer emerged out of nowhere, popping up fully formed with a major-label debut.

Ted Lasso star Jason Sudeikis does some freelance coaching in the new Foo Fighters music video for “Love Dies Young,” a song from the band’s latest album Medicine at Midnight.
The coach in the new video is actually sort of an anti-Lasso – for starters, he’s seemingly Eastern or maybe Central European and coaches synchronized swimming, not to mention he’s gross and badgering rather than homespun and inspiring. But the actor’s appearance can’t help but remind of his hit Apple TV+ series.
Sudeikis’ performance takes up nearly three minutes of music-free video before the Foo Fighters song makes its entrance, with the faces of Dave Grohl (who also directs) and his bandmates superimposed onto the synchronized swimmers.
Grohl’s underwater appearance also summons memories of the Nevermind album cover by that band he was in some time ago. And the end of the video with Pat Smear...

It took roughly four months for Nirvana to become Nirvana.

Before Nevermind, Ten, Badmotorfinger, or Dirt, there was Gish. And while it may be a stretch to say that Smashing Pumpkins’ 1991 debut LP was the first album of the alternative rock revolution (Jane’s Addiction, Pixies, Nirvana, and Mudhoney might have something to say about that), it was an enormous landmark nonetheless. At a time when most indie albums failed to reach many fans outside of an act’s small cult, Gish entered the Billboard 200, topped the Cmj chart, and connected in territories as far away as New Zealand and Australia.

Decades before Harry Styles angered conservatives by wearing a dress on the cover of Vogue, Kurt Cobain regularly dipped his toes in gender fluidity — donning dresses and makeup onstage, in photo shoots, or just hanging at friend’s houses. One memorable moment is when the late Nirvana frontman performed an encore in a lace slip and tiara, at Rio de Janeiro’s Hollywood Rock festival on January 23rd, 1993.
The show was the band’s second performance in Brazil that month; the previous one, on January 16th in São Paulo, was less than ideal.

Portland punk trio the Wipers played their first hometown gig, opening for a couple of New Wave-y California groups, in 1978. Fifteen-year-old Jerry Lang, a recent Portland transplant, was in the audience, and when the Wipers took the stage, he wasn’t sure what to make of them. “They weren’t really fashionable, as far as punk goes,” Lang remembers. “They weren’t dressed in the punk uniforms — spiky hair or safety pins — so the crowd wasn’t too crazy about them.” But when they kicked into their captivatingly gnarly originals,...

Did you recognize the song that plays in The Batman's first trailer? The buzzy initial look at Robert Pattinson's version of the iconic superhero is set to a particularly epic, surprisingly dark remix of a song you've definitely heard before.
The song playing in the trailer is a version of Nirvana's "Something in the Way," but it's not quite the track you're probably used to hearing. Originally, "Something in the Way" was the last song on the band's breakout album, Nevermind, in 1991, and while it never became a gigantic hit single, it's had a long life and a fair bit of popularity over the past 30 years. In its original form, it's a softer, more stripped-down song, featuring acoustic guitar and even a bit of cello.
For the trailer, however, someone - presumably the film's composer, Michael Giacchino, who's worked on several of your favorite sci-fi projects, including...

The Batman trailer arrived at DC FanDome and it was unexpectedly set to an iconic Generation X song. No, you silly goose, we’re not talking about Billy Idol’s old band, we mean, you know, ’90s kids. The eerie and somber trailer was set to the equally eerie and somber strains of Nirvana’s “Something in the Way,” the closing track off the band’s breakthrough album Nevermind.
In case you’ve been living “underneath the bridge” and somehow haven’t seen The Batman trailer yet, here it is…
Sure, this song is a great fit for this trailer, but we have to wonder how Kurt Cobain would have felt about his music being used to promote a blockbuster movie.
“Something in the Way” was notable for being one of the few quiet and understated track’s on the second Nirvana album, which was otherwise dominated by layers of...

If you've been wondering if Project Power's Newt (better known as the guy on fire) is played by Machine Gun Kelly, the answer is "yes." And if you were surprised to see him appear in the Netflix film, you really shouldn't be. Colson Baker may be better known as a rapper from Cleveland, but believe it or not, the 30-year-old has actually been adding to his acting résumé for a while now. In fact, he made his acting debut back in 2014 in the romantic drama Beyond the Lights.
