Now that the fall festivals of Toronto, Venice and Telluride have concluded, a number of anticipated awards season hopefuls have now premiered in front of audiences and critics. Some films that were at one point considered strong contenders are being reevaluated, while other films that were outside of prognosticators’ radars are suddenly looking likely to pick up a nod or two come Oscar nominations morning.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” received a somewhat mixed response in Venice. While critics have generally respected the new tonal direction of the sequel, most agree that it’s not quite as good as the first, which notably won the Golden Lion at Venice in 2019. As a result, the film has dropped out of the top ten in Gold Derby’s combined odds for Best Picture (15th at the time of writing), while star Joaquin Phoenix has dropped out of the top five for Best Actor (now 7th). Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Best Picture and the lack of an outright frontrunner.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! *Mr. Burns voice* Release the hounds! We’ve officially rang the bell on Oscar season — even though we’ve been ringing the bell since our ridiculously early Oscar picks in March — and this is already shaping up to be one of the most formless Phase 1s we’ve had in quite a while. In keeping with the theme of the 2024 presidential election, the buzzword I’ve heard from so many people about the race so far is “weird.” Last year at this time, many had already seen the 10 movies that would wind up getting nominated for Best Picture, with “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” leading the charge...

The State of the Race
If there is one major Oscar race that has changed the most due to the Academy’s push to become more globally-minded, it is the Best Director race. Recent surprise nominees, from “Anatomy of a Fall” filmmaker Justine Triet last year to “Triangle of Sadness” director Ruben Östlund and “Drive My Car” director Ryusuke Hamaguchi the years prior, have often been directors that appealed more to the tastes of international voters.
Fast forward to now, and that sort of Cannes crowd really is leading the conversation...

Variety has announced its 10 Actors to Watch for 2024, naming breakthrough and up-and-coming actors whose stars are on the rise. Over the years, the list has included more than 35 Oscar winners and nominees, including Viola Davis, Mahershala Ali, Timothée Chalamet and Brie Larson. The10 to Watch lists have been a Variety staple since 1997, with Actors to Watch highlighted since 1998, with many performers from awards season prospects.
This year is no exception, including actors in such high-profile upcoming films as “Emilia Pérez,” “Queer,” “A Complete Unknown” and “Gladiator II.”
The honorees will be profiled in the Oct. 17 issue of Variety and feted at a special brunch on Oct. 20 at the Newport Beach Film Festival Honors presented by Visit Newport Beach. In 2010 the academy reintroduced the preferential ballot to decide the Best Picture winner. Over the ensuing 14 years, there has been a difference between the winners of that award and Best Director at six Academy Awards ceremonies. Prior to this such splits were fairly rare. Why the change? (Scroll down for our updated 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Director.)
At the Oscars, the winner of Best Picture is determined by a weighted ballot and the outcomes of the other 22 races, including Best Director, are decided by a popular vote. While voters simply select one nominee in those other races, when it comes to Best Picture they are asked to rank all the nominees. If one contender garners more than 50% of the first-place votes, it wins. If, however, no nominee crosses that threshold, the film with the fewest first-place votes is eliminated, with its ballots being reapportioned to the second-place pick. This process...

The State of the Race
With the first round of fall film festivals coming to an end, the reality is settling in that 2024 just has not been the best year in film so far. Although Mike Flanagan’s “The Life of Chuck” was the eventual winner of the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival, an honor that has been one of the best indicators of what films will receive a Best Picture nomination, the two runner-ups were Cannes winners “Anora” and “Emilia Pérez,” now making them as solid...

The 2024 Toronto International Film Festival was a success on many fronts, launching many titles into the marketplace looking for buyers, and others into the fall season, including the usual spate of Oscar contenders. But the festival continues to contract, with empty seats in the largest houses.
Many sales titles weren’t scooped up quickly. According to buyers, many were demanding too much money, which should eventually shake out. David Gordon Green’s opening night family movie “Nutcrackers,” starring Ben Stiller, found a home at Hulu, and Paramount just picked up Munich Olympic Games thriller “September 5” for November release, promising an Oscar campaign.
Surprisingly, “The Life of Chuck,” without a distributor, won the People’s Choice Award that usually leads to a Best Picture Oscar nomination and occasionally an actual win. The likelihood that the film will instantly become an Oscar contender the way “American Fiction” did last year remains slim.

Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2024, Cillian Murphy, 47, won for his portrayal of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” He was the sixth Best Actor winner in a decade to prevail for playing a real person after Will Smith (“King Richard”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Gary Oldman (“The Darkest Hour”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), and Eddie Redmayne;. The four to win for fictional parts were Brendan Fraser, Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker), and Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”). Curzon has debuted a new trailer for ‘Nickel Boys,’ based on the book by Colson Whitehead chronicling the powerful friendship between two young Black teenagers navigating the harrowing trials of reform school together in Florida.
Elwood Curtis’s college dream shatters alongside a two-lane Florida highway. Bearing the brunt of an innocent misstep, he’s sentenced to the netherworld of Nickel Academy, a brutal reformatory sunk deep in the Jim Crow South. He encounters another ward, the seen-it-all Turner. The two Black teens strike up an alliance: Turner dispensing fundamental tips for survival, Elwood, clinging to his optimistic worldview. Backdropped by the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement, Elwood and Turner’s existence appear worlds away from Rev. Martin Luther King’s burnished oratory. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Elwood strives to hold onto his humanity, awakening a new vision for Turner.

Chatting with the head of a prominent documentary-production company recently, I asked if hybrid filmmaking had reached its natural limit. Could it conceivably be pushed further? He posited these limitations might be behind a recent trend of documentarians pivoting to fiction: Kirsten Johnson is making a Susan Sontag biopic with Kristen Stewart; Frederick Wiseman made his first narrative feature A Couple after half a century spent in non-fiction; Roberto Minervini’s The Damned and Sandhya Suri’s Santosh both premiered at Cannes this past Spring; most recently, RaMell Ross adapted the Pulitzer-winning novel Nickel Boys. Documentarians are realizing that if fiction and non-fiction are both highly constructed, then why not work this construction openly, with the added perks of larger budgets and access to stars?

For the past two years, movie theaters have struggled through deep droughts in September and October as they waited for end-of-year tentpoles like “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and surprises like “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” to rescue them.
They won’t have to worry about that in 2024.
Between now and Thanksgiving, the release slate promises the most consistent batch of offerings that exhibitors have enjoyed since the pandemic began in 2020. It starts this weekend with a potential $100 million-plus opening for Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.” That will kick off a series of franchise sequels, animated offerings and specialty hopefuls that may not yield a billion-dollar hit, but should keep the market slump-free.
Analysts who spoke to TheWrap are expecting a dramatic improvement from the $1.58 billion the domestic box office generated last September through November. But the bigger goal will be to reach the $2.42 billion made in that span in 2019 — the year...

In Nickel Boys, Elwood Curtis’s college dream shatters alongside a two-lane Florida highway.
Backdropped by the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement, Elwood and Turner’s existence appears worlds away from Rev. Martin Luther King’s burnished oratory. Despite Nickel’s brutality, Elwood strives to hold onto his humanity,...

Meet the Nickel Boys. MGM + Orion have revealed the first trailer for the film Nickel Boys, which just premiered at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival last weekend. It earned quite a few rave reviews from critics as a follow-up to director RaMell Ross' feature debut Hale County This Morning This Evening (2018). I also included Nickel Boys on my fall festival "10 Films to Keep An Eye On" guide a few weeks ago. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Colson Whitehead, Nickel Boys chronicles the powerful friendship between two young African American men navigating the harrowing trials of reform school together in Florida. Yes this looks like it's wonderful. Nickel Boys stars Ethan Herisse, Brandon Wilson, Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, & Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. Tremendous! The film is presented mainly from the Pov of the main characters, which gives it an especially distinct look and feel. The initial reviews also state:...

Documentarian RaMell Ross is turning the camera inward for an adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2019 novel “Nickel Boys.”
The Amazon MGM Studios’ Orion Pictures feature chronicles the powerful friendship between two young African American men navigating the harrowing trials of reform school together in Jim Crow–era Florida, per the official logline.
The book is fiction, but is based on the true story of a Florida reform school that hid decades of abuse against its residents. The novel alternates between 1960s Tallahassee and the 2010s between two former students who survived the school and revisit what happened on campus amid a university investigation.
Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson star as the two young leads; the cast is rounded out by Hamish Linklater, Fred Hechinger, Daveed Diggs, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, who is already getting Oscar buzz for her performance.
“Nickel Boys” is directed by Ross from a script he co-wrote with Joslyn Barnes.

After crafting one of the most remarkable documentaries of the last few years with the Apichatpong Weerasethakul-backed, Sundance-winning, Oscar-nominated Hale County This Morning, This Evening, director RaMell Ross has moved into narrative fiction with an adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s acclaimed, Pulitzer-winning 2019 novel The Nickel Boys. Going inside the true story of abuses at the juvenile reformatory Dozier School for Boys in Florida, the film features Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Ethan Herisse, Fred Hechinger, Hamish Linklater, Brandon Wilson, and Daveed Diggs.
With cinematography from Jomo Fray, who shot last year’s stunning All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, Nickel Boys sees Ross exude stunning formal power once again, telling this story with a unique, sensitive conceit that makes for a radical adaptation and one of the year’s best films. Ahead of the Opening Night premiere at the 62nd New York Film Festival and October 25 release from Amazon MGM Studios, the first trailer has now arrived.

While the Telluride Film Festival this past Labor Day weekend was a launchpad for many awards contenders having a breakout moment, from Karla Sofía Gascón in “Emilia Pérez” to the co-leads of “The Nickel Boys,” the past three days marking the midpoint of the Venice Film Festival put a spotlight on world premieres for the latest projects from three alumni, featuring a bevy of A-List talent, many of whom already have an Academy Award.
Working backwards, Day 7 of the festival marked the first public screening of the highly anticipated “Queer” from Luca Guadagnino, the director’s eighth film to screen at Venice. The adaptation of the William S. Burroughs novella “Junkie” uses quite a few of his collaborators from “Challengers,” the other film he released this year, which will have its own separate awards campaign, but the Oscars category it has been pegged for from the start is Best Actor for lead Daniel Craig.

The 2024 Telluride Film Festival was a success on many fronts, delivering packed screenings (and commensurate turnaways) at the big titles booked in the popular venues, with smaller turnouts for docs and classic titles in the less-frequented theaters. Below, IndieWire lays out the festival hits, commercial breakouts, Oscar contenders, and distribution seekers.
Festival Holdovers
The Telluride movies that played best for audiences were already anointed with credibility from prior festival reviews and/or prizes. That includes Cannes prize-winners “Emilia Pérez”, “Anora”, “All We Imagine as Light”, and “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”, the banned Iranian film submitted for Oscar consideration by Germany. All will be strong Oscar contenders, assuming that “All We Imagine as Light” is submitted by India or France for Best International Film, which is not a foregone conclusion. From Sundance was secret screening “A Real Pain” (Searchlight), starring Kieran Culkin and writer/director Jesse Eisenberg, which played...

The 51st edition of the Telluride Film Festival concluded on Labor Day, with three standout films generating significant Oscar buzz: Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner “Anora,” Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” and Jason Reitman’s dark comedy “Saturday Night.”
Distributed by Sony Pictures, “Saturday Night” marks Reitman’s return to both directing and screenwriting, collaborating with co-writer Gil Kenan. While the film takes a high-tension look at the 90 minutes leading up to the first episode of the iconic sketch show “Saturday Night Live,” it has received mixed reactions from critics. However, history has shown that critical reception does not always align with Oscar success, as evidenced by past Best Picture winners like “Green Book” (2018) and “Coda” (2021). The No. 1 rule of Oscar punditry is to remember critics are not Oscar voters.
On the other hand, RaMell Ross’s “Nickel Boys” could be poised to make an impression with both the L.

This year’s Telluride Film Festival lineup was not short on conversation starters. Films like Sean Baker’s “Anora,” RaMell Ross’s “Nickel Boys,” and Ali Abbasi’s “The Apprentice” were frequently discussed in screening queues, in the theater seats before the shows began, and on the town’s free gondola transportation. But Netflix’s “Emilia Perez” stood out among the titles as the one film, at least anecdotally, on everyone’s list. The film’s Sunday screening at the Werner Herzog Theater, the largest venue at the festival with a capacity of 650, hundreds of festival attendees had to be turned away at the door.

From “Boy A” (the movie that launched Andrew Garfield’s career) to “Zero for Conduct,” movies set in broken boarding schools and juvenile reformatory centers are a dime a dozen. With “Nickel Boys,” director RaMell Ross finds fresh colors in such a rigidly codified genre, turning a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel into a minimalist tone poem. The book by Colson Whitehead is brilliant, but much of it you’ve probably seen before on-screen, so Ross strips away as many of the words as possible, searching instead for images to tell the story of Elwood, a Tallahassee teen who’s so much more than a victim of the system.
Except, Ross doesn’t tell the story so much as inhabit it, to the extent I found myself wondering whether I could have followed the plot — which alternates between the 1960s and the early 2000s — had I not already read Whitehead’s novel.

RaMell Ross’ Nickel Boys powerfully adapts Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer-winning novel of the same name. The story follows two young black boys, Elwood and Turner, in 1960s Florida. Sent to a brutal reform school called Nickel Academy, the two face unimaginable abuse. Yet through their unlikely friendship, they find the resilience to survive.
Ross directs with great care and vision. Like his Oscar-nominated documentary Hale County, he hones in on telling details. Scenes flit between perspectives to fully immerse the viewer in each character’s experience. Through Elwood in particular, we see the world was not meant for these boys to succeed. But we also see glimmers of hope – in protest speeches, grandmothers dances, the bond between Elwood and Turner.
Adapting such a harrowing tale was no easy task. But by prioritizing emotional truth over sensationalism, Ross brings real heart to difficult subject matter. He invites us to step into...

I consumed Barry Jenkins’ 10-part limited series adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad over the course of a weekend because, basically, I couldn’t stop. It was extraordinary storytelling and filmmaking, if harrowing in its uncompromising depiction of slavery. Whitehead followed that book up with The Nickel Boys in 2019, and like Underground Railroad, won a Pulitzer Prize for it. Based on this, I looked forward to the film version, its title shortened to simply Nickel Boys, especially since it also came from Plan B., producers of The Underground Railroad and Oscar-winning Best Pictures 12 Years a Slave and Moonlight. As it turns out, shortening the title wasn’t the only change in the RaMell Ross screen version that just had its world premiere this weekend at the Telluride Film Festival and will also be opening the New York Film Festival.

Nickel Boys, RaMell Ross’ big screen interpretation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Nickel Boys, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Herzog Theatre on Friday night. Reactions among attendees, including numerous Academy members, have been strongly divided — many were impressed and deeply moved by the film, while others were left cold by it — leaving its Oscar prospects somewhat up in the air.
Ross is a tremendously gifted filmmaker who was Oscar-nominated and won a Peabody Award for his unconventional 2018 documentary feature Hale County This Morning, This Evening, which looked at the Black experience in a part of Alabama. A leaf twirls through a pair of Black fingers. A deck of playing cards is bridged together in extreme close-up. A dry-cleaned suit hangs out the window of a parked car like it’s waiting for its body to come back. A boy named Elwood studies his reflection in his grandmother’s steaming iron, and later in the window display of the local Tallahassee electronic shop whose TVs are broadcasting a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. The year is 1962, Jim Crow laws are still in full effect across the South, and young Elwood Curtis (Ethan Herisse) can’t help but see himself in the world around him — he can’t help but think he can change it.
In the news, Elwood sees men shooting themselves into outer space. At home, Elwood sees his defiantly ebullient Nana (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) dance around the kitchen as if nothing here on Earth could...

Back-to-back screenings at the Herzog Theatre in Telluride launched this year’s award season.
First up, Edward Berger’s “Conclave” (Focus) is a taut, sharply written and gorgeously mounted Vatican thriller revealing the arcane process that goes into electing a new pope. The “dean” is appointed to supervise the balloting among the cardinals, and Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) has his hands full. The film is told from his point of view, and we see him suffer under the strain of sundry revelations about the ambitious men who seek the papacy. The two sides line up as conservatives looking to restore the past vs. liberals looking to move forward. The movie based on Robert Harris’s 2016 novel is dominated by Fiennes, who was nominated for two Oscars (“Schindler’s List” and “The English Patient”), but has not been recognized since 1997. “We must believe in our souls that we are somebody, that we are significant, that we are worthful, and we must walk the streets of life every day with this sense of dignity and this sense of somebody-ness.” These are words from the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and they serve as an inspirational catalyst for Colson Whitehead’s 2020 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Nickel Boys.”
The book, which followed Whitehead’s critically acclaimed “The Underground Railroad,” shadows the gut-wrenching tale of two Black boys, Elwood (Ethan Herisse) and Turner (Brandon Wilson), negotiating their hard-time served in a severe reform school, Nickel Academy, and attempting to claim, protect and nurture their own humanity in a world that isn’t always kind or welcoming to people of color, particularly Black men.

RaMell Ross’ arresting narrative debut Nickel Boys does not, like the Colson Whitehead novel on which it’s based, begin with an exhumation. It opens, instead, with signs of life: oranges dangling from the branches of a tree; a hand caressing the grass, a beckoning voice calling “Elwood, Elwood, Elwood” like a song.
Details like these matter in Nickel Boys, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival before it opens New York Film Festival next month, because they mark the passage of time and honor family rituals. Inside the house: glimpses of a gold bracelet wrapped around a delicate wrist, the sound of cards being shuffled and honeyed laughs bouncing off the walls. These details shape memories, eventually ossifying into evidence of an existence.

When Telluride Film Festival director Julie Huntsinger introduced “Nickel Boys” at its world premiere screening on Friday night, she didn’t hold back any excitement – not that she has at all in the walk-up to the 51st annual event. “It’s such a towering achievement. It is emotionally rewarding. It should be one of the most talked about films of the whole year.”
Based on the response to the film on Friday night, Huntsinger’s prediction might come true. “Nickel Boys,” filmmaker RaMell Ross’s adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2019 novel “The Nickel Boys,” had audience members searching for new ways to express their admiration for Ross’s work.

Telluride is where it all begins. It’s the launch of a long culling process as audiences and critics watch, and judge, the carefully curated program. Some movies will land distributors; some will have the right stuff to build word of mouth, critical support, and the momentum that can sustain a lengthy Oscar campaign.
This year’s Telluride is a starrier affair than the last. With strikes in the rear view, optimism and anxiety run high in equal measure. At the annual Patrons’ Brunch, where the mountain views are sublime (see below), French auteur Jacques Audiard hung in the shade while his Cannes prize-winning “Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón soaked up sun and attention. Netflix is campaigning her for Best Actress, while her costar at the brunch, Selena Gomez, will go for supporting.
