Standing atop the Philadelphia Art Museum’s iconic steps, Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter proclaimed Wednesday, November 25 “Creed” Day in honor of the upcoming film – opening that same day – which explores the next chapter in the “Rocky” saga.
Creed stars Sylvester Stallone, Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson joined Mayor Nutter on Friday to receive the official proclamation. The film’s writer/director, Ryan Coogler, and producer Irwin Winkler were also on hand.
The film, which brings Rocky Balboa face-to-face with the son of his one-time rival and best friend, Apollo Creed, was shot in and around the City of Brotherly Love. The museum steps, and the statue of Rocky that stands at the bottom of them, can, in fact, be seen in Creed.
Mayor Nutter also gifted the team from Creed with individually inscribed miniature Liberty Bells to mark the occasion; they, in turn, presented the mayor with a framed rendering of the mural,...

HitFix's recent spate of "Best Year in Film History" pieces inevitably spurred some furious debate among our readers, with some making compelling arguments for years not included in our pieces (2007 and 1968 were particularly popular choices) and others openly expressing their bewilderment at the inclusion of others (let's just say 2012 took a beating). In the interest of giving voice to your comments, below we've rounded up a few of the most thoughtful, passionate, surprising and occasionally incendiary responses to our pieces, including my own (I advocated for The Year of Our Lynch 2001, which is obviously the best). Here we go... Superstar commenter "A History of Matt," making an argument for 1968: The Graduate. Bullit. The Odd Couple. The Lion in Winter. Planet of the Apes. The Thomas Crown Affair. Funny Girl. Rosemary's Baby. And of course, 2001, A Space Odyssey. And that's only a taste of the greatness of that year. "Lothar the Flatulant,...

As Hollywood’s raid on the cinematic closets of yesteryear continues, this latest piece of development news shows that at least some things are changing. Most recently, announcements concerning remakes, reboots, sequels and spinoffs have been met by the wild sobs of people who grew up in the eighties.
Now, thanks to that decade having practically been exhausted of its recyclable potential, studios are turning to the nineties. The newest slice of nostalgia in the crosshairs for a do-over is the 1999 teen comedy She’s All That. And is it coincidence that the film itself is about getting a makeover? Probably.
A success at the time of release, She’s All That scored big at the box office with $100 million in receipts. Freddie Prinze Jr., then riding on a huge wave of popularity, starred as the broken-hearted jock Zach, who enters into a wager with his best friend Dean Sampson...

It sounds like Hollywood might be scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to remaking properties from the 80s, because The Weinstein Company and Miramax are looking into their 90s film library for a new remake. The Tracking Board (via TheWrap reports there's a remake of the 1999 high school romantic comedy She's All That in the works. At this time, Kenny Leon is attached to direct, which doesn't inspire much confidence since he directed Lifetime's 2012 remake of Steel Magnolias. However, when we take a look at the cast of that made-for-tv movie, it gives us an idea of what new direction this remake will take. The cast of Lifetime's Steel Magnolia's features a large black cast that included starred Queen Latifah, Alfre Woodard, Phylicia Rashād, Jill Scott, Adepero Oduye and Condola Rashād. And I'm betting that much like the remake of About Last Night, this remake will...

Hit 1999 teen flick "She's All That" is getting a makeover, with reports suggesting that a remake starring a more diverse cast is in the works.
The Tracking Board writes that Miramax and The Weinstein Company are teaming up to remake the property, with director Kenny Leon attached. Leon is also directing NBC's upcoming live staging of "The Wiz," and has helmed several updates on classic films and plays, including the 2012 Lifetime version of "Steel Magnolias."
In addition to Leon, the creative team also reportedly includes Tonya Lewis Lee (wife of Spike Lee), who's producing the project. TheWrap reports that filmmakers are looking to cast more diverse leads this time around.
"She's All That" -- a take on the "Pygmalion" tale that inspired "My Fair Lady" -- starred Freddie Prinze Jr. as a jock who makes a bet that he can turn an ugly duckling (Rachael Leigh Cook) into prom queen.

NBC is set to ease on down the road with its next live musical, with the network announcing Monday that it will stage an adaptation of "The Wiz" in December -- with a special assist.
NBC revealed that "The Wiz" will once again be produced by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (the duo behind the network's previous live efforts, "Sound of Music Live!" and "Peter Pan Live!," and the past three Oscars telecasts). But this year, the network is pulling out all the stops for the broadcast, which will also feature a collaboration with acrobatic troupe Cirque du Soleil.
And the ambitious plans don't stop there: After the live staging airs on NBC in December, the show will then move to Broadway for the 2016-2017 season. Tony winner and Broadway veteran Harvey Fierstein ("Mrs. Doubtfire," "La Cage aux Folles," "Hairspray") will work on adapting the show's original book by William F. Brown,...

Mary-Louise Parker‘s reunion with NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt is now official as the former Weeds star has closed a deal to topline NBC’s single-camera comedy pilot Feed Me. The project, from veteran producers Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas, received a pilot green light last month based on Parker’s intention to star in it. Following the end of Weeds, which Greenblatt put on the air while running Showtime, NBC had been pursing the actress for multiple projects, and Feed Me was the script she responded to. Talks with Parker had already commenced when Feed Me was picked up to pilot three weeks ago, now they have been successfully completed. Written by Sally Robinson, who penned Lifetime’s successful Steel Magnolias remake, Feed Me is described as a comedic exploration of adult intimacy and desire that centers on a dysfunctional family bound by love and the restaurant they run together.

It is a big week for producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. They have the live staging of The Sound Of Music starring Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer on NBC tomorrow night, and four-hour miniseries Bonnie & Clyde starring Emile Hirsch and Holliday Grainger airing Sunday and Monday on History, A&E and Lifetime. While most producers abandoned the longform genre when it went out of fashion over the last five years, Zadan and Meron stuck with it through their longform deal at Sony TV, producing mostly movies for Lifetime, including the highly rated Steel Magnolias reboot with an all-black cast. Their loyalty has paid off and the two now are at the forefront of longform’s resurgence. (Zadan and Meron just sold a high-profile Eliot Ness miniseries to NBC.) Coming up for the duo next year is the launch of their new MTV comedy series Happyland, the return of Lifetime...

Just a generation ago it would have been unimaginable, but the fact of the matter is this: since the arrival of premium cable and the rise of HBO about 30 years ago, television has provided quality entertainment on a more consistent basis than movies. This has never been more true than it is today, with the movies dominated by mindless remakes, sequels and adaptations, while TV offers the likes of not only HBO but also AMC, Showtime and now even streaming alternatives like Netflix, all of which proudly air original and edgy content of the sort that one used to find at the cineplex before the studios were swallowed by profit-obsessed conglomerates. Now, not only viewers look at TV differently — but so, too, do talent.

Like Jessica Lange last year, Sarah Paulson ("American Horror Story: Asylum") seems to be almost a slam dunk to take home this year's Emmy for Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actress. She is currently favored by nine of our 12 experts, all seven of our editors, and 78% of users. That puts her far out front with overall odds of 1/4. The remaining nominees have limited support. Her closest competitor is Ellen Burstyn for "Political Animals." She has the backing of two experts, getting 15/2 odds overall. Emmy darling Alfre Woodard follows for "Steel Magnolias"; she is predicted by one expert and gets 16/1 odds. Rounding out the category are Charlotte Rampling for "Restless" (50/1) and Imelda Staunton for "The Girl" (100/1). Here's a closer look at each of the nominees. -Break- Ellen Burstyn, "Political Animals" Burstyn is nominated for playing Margaret Barrish Worthington, m...

In this new featurette from Fox Searchlight, the cast a crew of Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave discuss Solomon Northup, the free man kidnapped and sold into slavery whose life serves as the inspiration for the movie.
“I wanted to tell a story about slavery, and it was just one of those subject matters where I thought to myself, well, how do I approach this? I liked the idea of it starting with someone who is a free man, a man who is much like everyone watching the movie in the cinema — just a regular family guy,” McQueen recalls, “who is then dragged into slavery through a kidnapping. I thought of him as someone who could take the audience through the ghastly conveyor belt of slavery’s history.”

Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage. This mini-movie supporting lineup promises to be a particularly unpredictable one, with at least three of the contenders and maybe four having a legitimate claim on the golden girl. It begins with James Cromwell’s chilling portrayal of a Nazi scientist in FX’s American Horror Story: Asylum and continues with Zachary Quinto‘s performance in the same project as a psychiatrist who has a secret life as a serial killer. They will be competing with Peter Mullan for his work as the sadistic Matt in the Sundance Channel miniseries Top Of The Lake and John Benjamin Hickey, nommed for his portrayal of the dying Cathy’s brother Sean in Showtime’s The Big C: Hereafter. Finally, there is the longest shot on the board: Scott Bakula in the HBO biopic Behind The Candelabra. The five nominees for mini-movie supporting actress honor five pretty spectacular performances,...

This year's Movie/Miniseries Supporting Actress nomination for "Steel Magnolias" brings Alfre Woodard's career Emmy tally to an impressive 17 bids. Because these nods are for 16 different roles, Woodard enters Emmy's record book as TV's most versatile performer. Without a doubt, Woodard is one of the industry's favorite actresses. Besides winning four Emmys over her career, she also earned an Oscar nomination (Best Supporting Actress, "Cross Creek," 1983) and a Golden Globe (TV Movie/Miniseries Actress, "Miss Evers' Boys," 1997). The fact that she has appeared in six different Emmy races -- including all three Drama categories (lead, supporting, guest), both of the Movie/Miniseries categories (lead, supporting) and one Comedy category (supporting) -- makes Woodard's distinct haul even more impressive. But even though Woodard has amassed a record number of Emm...

The Saturday night premiere of the Lifetime original movie on the life of former Playmate Anna Nicole Smith pulled in 3.3 million viewers. Anna Nicole was even with the 3.3 million viewers the Rob Lowe-starring Prosecuting Casey Anthony drew on January 19. It was down from the 3.5 million that heavily hyped Liz & Dick with Lindsay Lohan garnered on November 25, 2012. Saturday’s movie drew a 2.6 household rating. Anna Nicole was the top original cable movie premiere of the year so far among adults 25-54 (1.6 million) and adults 18-49 (1.4 million). That’s best for Lifetime in the key demos as well as among women 25-54 and women 18-49 since last fall’s Steel Magnolias. Agnes Bruckner starred as Anna Nicole, alongside Martin Landau, Virginia Madsen, Adam Goldberg and Cary Elwes. "Lifetime Movie" brings connotations of rickety production values and hastily adapted true-crime subject matter like the Jodi Arias case (which will indeed be enacted on the channel in "Dirty Little Secret" -- announced just a week after the verdict was handed down and set to air on June 22). But the network also makes periodic ventures into higher-end programming -- 2009 found Bob Balaban directing Joan Allen and Jeremy Irons in 'Georgia O'Keeffe," Lindsay Lohan and Grant Bowler (ahem) got attention for last year's "Liz & Dick" while Kenny Leon helmed an African-American remake of "Steel Magnolias," and "American Psycho" filmmaker Mary Harron is attached to "Anna Nicole," scheduled to air in June. So while "Breaking Bad" and "Homeland" are nominated for best drama series, so is "The Americans." The best comedy nominees include "The Big Bang Theory" and "Louie," but also "The Middle."
"Big Bang" and "American Horror Story: Asylum" lead the nominees with six apiece. "Parks and Recreation" and Sundance's miniseries "Top of the Lake" have five each. Ditto for "Modern Family" on the comedy side; Sarah Hyland was the only cast member nominated.
