Illustrations by Maddie Fischer. The first film I saw on the Lido this year wasn’t a feature but a twenty-minute VR project: Mammary Mountain. Playing in the Venice Immersive sidebar, and directed by Tara Baoth Mooney, Camille C. Baker, and Maf’j Alvarez, it promised an “embodied haptic experience” of breast cancer treatment, as remembered by a few survivors. I’d never worn a VR set before, much less a mammography gown, which was strapped around my chest after a nurse sat me down to explain the procedure and its possible complications. I signed the consent form, followed her into another room, and pressed play. All through the film, a multi-sensorial journey designed to stoke the fantasy of being in someone else’s body, I kept thinking about Roger Ebert’s characterization of cinema as an empathy machine. The voices of chemotherapy patients, discussing their relationship with the illness and its treatment,...

France has selected Jacques Audiard’s bold musical “Emilia Perez” to represent the country in the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film race, giving that category an instant frontrunner at the 97th Academy Awards.
The Netflix film, which caused a sensation at the Cannes Film Festival with its story of a Mexican drug lord undergoing sex reassignment surgery, is considered one of the year’s likeliest Best Picture nominees, making it a clear favorite in the international category as well.
It was chosen on Wednesday by a selection committee that had narrowed its choices to four: “Emilia Perez,” Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light,” Matthieu Delaporte’s “The Count of Monte Cristo” and Alain Guiraudie’s “Misericordia.”
Last year, that committee chose “The Taste of Things” over “Anatomy of a Fall,” going with a ravishing romance over an edgier drama that had won the top prize in Cannes. “The Taste of Things...

It’s not easy being a mangaka who has written over 1000 chapters for an ultra-hit manga series. Very few people will understand the pain that goes into creating such a huge franchise, and Eiichiro Oda and Gosho Aoyama are some of them. Both One Piece and Detective Conan are extremely successful and have been ongoing for decades with little to no drops in popularity.
One Piece and Detective Conan each have more than 100 volumes to their names, a dream that very few mangakas can achieve. Thus, both creators felt an affinity and even wanted to talk to each other. Their wishes came true in the form of an interview with Weekly Shonen Jump.

Mariah Carey‘s sister, Alison Carey, is in the news because she recently died. Some fans might not know that Alison inspired one of Mariah’s most famous ballads: “One Sweet Day,” a collaboration with the R&b group Boyz II Men. A member of Boyz II Men revealed that the group had their own interpretation of the song.
Mariah Carey was worried she’d lose her sister when she wrote ‘One Sweet Day’
According to Heavy.com, Alison was HIV positive. That had a massive effect on “One Sweet Day.” Notably, the song came out in 1995, a time when the HIV/AIDS pandemic was a huge problem in the United States and affected a lot of popular culture. While many fans were probably ignorant of the song’s themes, it comforted some of the people suffering through the pandemic.

Disney’s “Alien: Romulus” maintained its grip on the U.K. and Ireland box office, earning a shade over £2 million ($2.6 million) in its second week of release for a cumulative total of £8.2 million ($10.8 million), per numbers from Comscore.

Clint Eastwood is one of those people who can turn anything into gold by simply being a part of it. One could say that the director/actor is gifted the Midas Touch. While it is difficult to pick just one favorite amongst his many works, Dirty Harry by Don Siegel seems like a good place to start. Having received unending praise from both critics and fans, the cop thriller was preserved by the Library of Congress in the U.S. National Film Registry. It’s that good.

While Clint Eastwood’s creative ideas always seem to work in his films’ favor, he was a little off about how things should end for his character in Dirty Harry. Luckily, director Don Siegel was there to guide him in the right direction and he actually ended up loving the ending he was once so against.

Billed as an international group, with final members hailing from America, the Philippines, South Korea and Switzerland, the group was created using K-pop artist development methodologies through the audition program The Debut: Dream Academy.
Now, nine months after it was announced that Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia and Yoonchae were selected for the global group, Katseye has released their first EP Sis (Soft Is Strong) and is the focus of new Netflix docuseries Popstar Academy: Katseye.

If you're chronically online and/or a K-pop fan, chances are you've heard of the new girl group Katseye. Well, Netflix decided to team up with Hybe, Interscope Films, and Boardwalk Pictures to create a docuseries showing how the group was formed.
Before we get into what this docuseries is about, it's important to mention that Katseye is not a K-pop group. Instead, they are a US-based girl group under the South Korean record label Hybe, which is the same label whose artists include K-pop groups BTS, New Jeans, Le Sserafim, etc. In addition, they're also under the major US record label Geffen Records.

In late June, the six-piece girl group Katseye debuted their first single, fittingly titled “Debut.” One month later, they followed it up with “Touch,” a pop earworm that’s beginning to make the rounds on TikTok. The group has already amassed one million monthly listeners on Spotify, but their origin story is not one of overnight success. Geffen Records and BTS label Hybe put 20 young girls through a K-pop trainee-level program to form Katseye from an intense star search and audition process — and it was all captured for the eight-part...

As anticipated on Friday, Nicolas Cage starring Longlegs, pushing a $6.7 million weekend on 2,730 screens — for a cume of $58.6 million in week 3 — has surpassed Parasite’s $53.37 million to become the indie distributor’s highest grossing film ever.
Now in week 3, the Osgood Perkins pic is also the top grossing R-rated horror of 2024 and the highest grossing indie horror film of the last ten years, topping A24’s Talk To Me, Insidious Chapter 3 from Universal’s Focus, and A24’s Hereditary. It’s no. 5 at the domestic box office.
Also in wide release, Bleecker Street is estimating The Fabulous Four will gross just over $1 million in its opening weekend on 1,045 screens. Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse, its stars Susan Sarandon, Megan Mullally and Sheryl Lee Ralph as a group of lifelong friends who travel to Key West to be bridesmaids in the surprise wedding of their best college girlfriend, played by Bette Midler.

Baltasar Kormákur was in a reflective mood at the Taormina Film Festival, where his romantic drama Touch had its Italian premiere this past week. The Icelandic filmmaker compared Touch to his first feature, 2000’s 101 Reykjavik. The former was “a black comedy about love,” while Touch is “a way more sincere approach to love and life,” he said.
Touch, which has just become the biggest film of the year in Iceland at $569,600, is based on Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson’s bestselling 2021 novel Snerting. It wouldn’t be surprising to see it become the Icelandic entry for the International Feature Oscar race this year — Kormákur already has repped his home country four times, making the shortlist with 2012’s The Deep.
The multi-hyphenate, who for years has worked across Iceland and Hollywood, told Deadline that he sparked to Touch’s source material immediately but only later realized he had a particular connection to the story.

Independents look solid this weekend with Vertical’s Widow Clicquot nice alternative programming amid summer blockbuster season, IFC Film horror Oddity off to a fine start, and Thelma, one of the year’s biggest specialty hits, passing $8 million. New films and holdovers in limited release did business.
Thomas Napper’s Widow Clicquot is looking at an estimated 3-day box-office gross of $190k on about 100 screens. Haley Bennett stars as Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot in the true story of a 20-year-old woman who flouts convention by — after her husband dies — taking the reins of their wine business. Clicquot (1777–1866) defied her critics and ultimately revolutionized the champagne industry one of the world’s early, great businesswomen. (‘Veuve’ is French for widow.)
The R-rated drama, screenplay by Erin Dignam, is 88% with critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, a good sign for an extended run. Top five opening markets include LA, NY, San Francisco, Washington D.

At the Taormina Film Festival, Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur spoke to Variety about romantic drama “Touch,” his adaptation of the novel by Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson. The film was released last week in the U.S. by Focus Features, earning rave reviews and a 93% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Previously Kormákur has filmed Idris Elba versus a lion in “Beast,” and Jason Clarke and Jake Gyllenhaal versus a mountain in “Everest,” but in some ways this story of an old man, Kristófer, reconciling with a lost love as he faces early-onset dementia was just as daunting.
“My daughter gave me the novel for Christmas, and this piqued my interest, but she didn’t say much about what it was. Then I started reading about this old man looking back on his life, and slowly but surely it started tightening its grip on me. It was weirdly a page-turner in the most relaxed way.

Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur is a rare sort these days. Here is a director who has built a successful, decades-long career making solid, genre-heavy programmers while often returning to Iceland to put in solid work. There was a time that this kind of output was the lifeblood of the industry. His type nearly extinct now, Kormákur beats on, telling stories for adults.
His new film, Touch, fits right into the mold. Talk about a relic: a mid-budget romantic drama released in theaters! Written by Kormákur and Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson (based on Ólafur’s 2022 novel of the same name), it tells the story of Kristófer (Egill Olafsson), an older widow who shuts down his restaurant in Iceland and travels to Japan in an attempt to find Miko, the love of his life from half a century ago.

A24’s drama Sing Sing starring Colman Domingo turned out the third highest limited opening and per screen average of the year so far, and Touch from Focus Features by Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur has a nice opening. Indian 2 marks the third straight week with one or more Indian films in the top ten. It’s a upbeat box office weekend with indie distributor Neon’s upscale horror Longlegs cleaning up with a $22 million opening.

This weekend was projected to be a breather in between massive openings for “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) and “Twisters” (Universal)/“Deadpool and Wolverine” (Disney) the following two weeks. It sort of worked out that way, but not the way it was expected.
“Longlegs” (Neon) and “Fly Me to the Moon” (Sony) were projected to come in second and third this weekend with a combined $30 million-$35 million. That part happened. But Apple’s rom-com with Scarlett Johansson and Channing Tatum was expected to take second, perhaps at least $15 million (earlier projections higher), while Oz Perkins’ distinctive horror-thriller starring Nicolas Cage was felt to be $10 million or more.
Instead, “Longlegs” took second with $22.6 million, while “Fly” is initially placed at $10 million (others have it lower), and only in fifth place. Both are striking results.
With a budget including marketing under $10 million, “Longlegs” has grossed more in only one weekend than all but...

The fun thing about the box office is that it always has the potential to throw a few surprises our way, and that’s exactly what happened on this hot and humid mid-July weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Universal’s animated sequel, “Despicable Me 4,” remained in the top spot at the box office this weekend with an estimated $44.7 million, down 40% from its 4th of July opening weekend, bringing its domestic total to $211.1 million. It added another $88 million internationally in 78 markets for an overseas total of $226.7 million and $437.8 million globally. It has also become the first animated franchise to reach $5 billion globally with six movies to date and a third “Minions” movie just announced for summer 2027.
The big surprise of the weekend had to be Oz Perkins‘s eerie serial killer thriller “Longlegs” starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, which received great reviews with 87% on Rotten Tomatoes...

Longlegs, the highly regarded horror film starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe, stunned the North American box office over the weekend to open on an estimated $22.6m record bow for Neon.
‘Longlegs’: Review
Osgood Perkins’s film about an FBI agent on the trail of a satanic serial killer may not have won the box office weekend – that accolade went to Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 with a $44.7m hold – but second place against a summer tentpole is impressive.
Further, the opening weekend result has revived the horror genre and delivered a timely fillip to box office in a difficult year.

On the surface, Touch seems to be a sudden change of pace for Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur, a quiet and polished film-of-the-book that could easily pass for a BBC presentation. It does, however, square with his action-thriller output, being the story of a man on a mission; admittedly, nothing to do with savage lions, mountaineering or Colombian drug cartels, but older audiences will respond to its hero’s perilous journey into the past, risking Covid and the disapproval of his stepdaughter in his bid to solve a mystery that has haunted him for 50 years.
If it wasn’t for the subtitles, you’d swear this was a British movie from the early 2000s, following the Brit-lit conventions established along the way by the film adaptations of bestsellers such as Ian McEwan’s Atonement and On Chesil Beach,...

Icelandic actor/director Baltasar Kormákur is a member of a growing cadre of international filmmakers who make films at home as well as Hollywood. Kormákur is best known for studio action adventures such as “Contraband” (2012), his remake of his 2000 breakout “101 Reykjavik.” Producer/star Mark Wahlberg took a shine to the rugged director, and went on to make another film with him, the $80-million actioner “2 Guns” (2013), co-starring Denzel Washington.
Accustomed to weathering harsh conditions while directing such films as the International Oscar-shortlisted survival film “The Deep” (2013), Kormákur used many tricks in his filmmaking arsenal for Jake Gyllenhaal starrer “Everest” (2015), blending a subzero soundstage with vertiginous ladders, real snow, location footage in the Dolomites, and CGI extensions.
But like many Hollywood imports, he returned to his own country to start a production company and live a double life. He makes some projects in Hollywood (2022’s “Beast” starring Idris Elba), and...

Even with the benefit of hindsight, it can still be difficult to fathom what the historical fulcrum February and March 2020 represented. A paradoxical time when normal life continued largely unbothered while mutterings of a new disease called “coronavirus” gradually crescendoed before turning into an overnight roar. When our biggest concerns were delayed NBA games and Tom Hanks’ inability to finish “Elvis,” it was unthinkable that humanity was on the brink of a pandemic that took seven million lives and shattered many of the social norms upholding the polite society that we had long taken for granted. Most of us had no idea what was coming, so we wore our masks on half-empty flights while the world quietly prepared to shut down around us.
It’s against this backdrop of uncertainty that Kristofer (Egill Ólafsson), an aging Icelandic widower in Baltasar Kormákur’s “Touch,” gets the news that nobody ever wants.

The world premiere of Mitzi Peirone’s horror film “Saint Clare” will open the Taormina Film Festival, this year celebrating its 70th anniversary edition. The adaptation of Don Roff’s novel stars Bella Thorne, Ryan Phillippe, Frank Whaley and Rebecca De Mornay. Starring “Normal People’s” Daisy Edgar Jones and “Hitman” star Glen Powell, the “Minari” director’s film is a reupping of Jan de Bont’s mid-90s classic, with a James Cameron-esque title promising to multiply the mayhem.

Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur made a handful of smaller films before bursting into mainstream Hollywood with the Mark Wahlberg action flick "Contraband" in 2012. He's stayed steadily busy ever since, cranking out the Denzel Washington/Mark Wahlberg actioner "2 Guns" in 2013, the ensemble mountain climbing thriller "Everest" in 2015, the Shailene Woodley/Sam Claflin survival movie "Adrift" in 2018, and the "Idris Elba fights a lion" movie "Beast" in 2022, plus directing a couple of television shows in between. As those credits indicate, Kormákur is primarily known to American audiences for his high-octane filmmaking style. His latest project, however, marks a significant change of pace.
"Touch," written by Kormákur and Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson (based on a novel by Ólafsson), tells the story of Kristófer, an elderly Icelander whose wife has passed away. Spurred on by some health issues of his own and sense that he's running out of time, Kristófer sets out to find a woman named Miko,...

The One Who Got Away is a romantic notion that’s been widely propagated by pop culture cinema. And for good reason, as heartfelt drama and compelling conflicts arise authentically from these confrontations with fate. Director-co-writer Baltasar Kormákur’s “Touch,” based on Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson’s novel of the same name, expands on this swoon-worthy idea, elegantly crafting an achingly poignant story centered on an elderly man searching for his true love amidst a time of uncertainty. This gentle, unfussy romance contains a heart-clutching finale that’s as classically restrained as it is emotionally resounding.
