The Match Factory has acquired international rights to Russian director Victor Kossakovsky’s new documentary Architecton ahead of its Berlinale world premiere.
The film project follows the filmmaker’s farmyard doc Gunda, which played in Berlinale Encounters in 2020, and Aquerala, which world premiered Out of Competition In Venice in 2018.
The Match Factory describes Kossakovsky’s new film as “an epic, intimate and poetic meditation” on architecture and how the design and construction of buildings from the ancient past reveal mankind’s present destruction.
Focusing on a landscape project by the Italian architect Michele de Lucci, Kossakovsky reflects on the rise and fall of civilizations, using imagery from the temple ruins of Baalbek in Lebanon, dating back to Ad 60, to the recent destruction of cities in Turkey following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in early 2023.

As we’ve said over the past few years, the films being produced by the students at the London Film School are always an apt barometer for the standard of budding filmmakers based across the UK and Europe. The school offers its cohort industry-leading tuition alongside professional equipment to make great work but both those elements are nothing if you don’t have a strong idea and a talented filmmaker to utilise them. Fortunately, as demonstrated in this year’s graduate showcase, the crop of promising talent and fresh ideas are in abundance. It’s been incredibly tricky to narrow down the shorts this year into a tight list of ten as the standard across the board was so high so if you’re able to get across to the BFI Southbank this week (22nd – 26th January 2024) to catch the programme in its entirety, you won’t regret it. However,...

Berlinale co-directors Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek are going out with a bang in their final year, with a lineup unveiled today featuring the latest works by Olivier Assayas, Bruno Dumont, Mati Diop, Hong Sang-soo, Abderrahmane Sissako, Jane Schoenbrun, Alonso Ruizpalacios, Matias Pineiro, Travis Wilkerson, Kazik Radwanski, Annie Baker, and more.
When the co-directors were asked by Screen Daily about their departure, Chatrian said, “It’s quite simple. Mariette and I had a mandate of five years. It is true that at the beginning I said that I was willing to go on because there was a shared will with the [German] Ministry [of Culture] to go on. But then the people who have the responsibility to see the future of the Berlinale thought this structure of two leaders was not the right one and I don’t consider myself able to run the festival alone. And that was the decision of the Ministry.

New Delhi, Aug 14 (Ians) With another heatwave hitting Britain this weekend, churches around the country are offering their large, stone buildings as a sanctuary for people seeking refuge from the unbearable temperatures.
In London, Rev John MacKenzie, vicar of St Luke’s Church, West Holloway, is offering respite for those seeking to escape overheating homes.
He said: “Throughout history, churches have been places of sanctuary so it’s fitting that our nice, cool buildings are a source of refuge for people trying to avoid the heat.
“Whether it’s running food banks or offering a night shelter for the homeless, churches are often trying to help the local community so as we have these large, stone buildings it makes sense to open them up for the public to use.

Janet Montgomery turned a nightmare into a graphic novel.
The star of NBC’s New Amsterdam had a dream of being on an airplane and seeing the world below burning in a wave of fire. Now, eight years later, that idea has turned into Scorched Earth, a graphic novel that hits stores and digital this week from upstart publisher Paper Movies.
The story, which has tones recalling Lost and humans-are-worse-than-the-monsters themes of The Walking Dead, is set in motion after a flash inferno engulfs the planet with the only survivors being those aboard airplanes. The survivors must then navigate a scorched world with threats ...

Netflix seems to have found its niche. In the films department, the streamer has invested heavily of late in prestige content from some of Hollywood’s most respected minds, resulting in awards-friendly (if not award-winning) output like Marriage Story, The Irishman and The Two Popes.
The TV department has different priorities. Bingeable true crime documentaries and soapy dramas fill the site’s television slate, driving clicks and social media conversation often with markedly less investment. Think Locke & Key, Riverdale, You.
Dare Me is the quintessential new addition to that latter group. A ten-part series which first aired in the States on the USA Network late last year, joining Netflix internationally March 20, the show is a claustrophobic and occasionally bloody look at the always-competitive dynamic of high school teens. Cutthroat is the key word. Spoken in ominous voiceover, the show’s first line – “There’s something dangerous about the boredom of...

Hey, "Power" fans. If you were looking for the brand new episode 9 of this current season 6 last night, October 20, 2019, I imagine you were greatly disappointed to see that it was not on. Yeah, for some reason, Starz decided not to air the new episode 9 this week. We're still not sure why. Instead, they aired the 8th episode of season 6 rerun on the east coast. That episode is called, "Deal With The Devil." Starz's official description of it reads like this, "The Feds turn the heat up on Tommy and scare Lakeisha into cooperating. Ghost discontinues a relationship with an ally. Tasha confronts a snitch, which hits a little too close to home." Then on the west coast, they aired the 4th episode of this current season 6, which is labeled, "Why Is Tommy Still Alive?" Starz's official description of that one reads like this, "Tasha meets a new flame; Ghost does...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Gina Carano roams a mild yet tedious postapocalyptic wasteland as a bounty hunter, and either you are here for this lady badass of our feminazi dreams, or you are not. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

It’s a confused kind of postapocalyptic hellscape in Scorched Earth. The earth doesn’t look very scorched, for one, “fifty years after the Cloudfall.” which takes us to, apparently, the early 22nd century. The air and water are poisoned, but everything seems pretty nice otherwise up here in the mountains of what used to be Montana. There’s a sort of neo Wild West vibe: it’s a little bit Firefly, actually. Billions of people are dead, which is terrible,...

Plot: A bounty hunter seeks revenge against a villainous cowboy in this science fiction, western mash-up. Review: At first glance, the post-apocalyptic, low-budget action flick, Scorched Earth didn’t look like much. This kind of thing is done way too often and with mostly terrible results. For every Mad Max: Fury Road, there are a dozen or so cheapie snooze fests that are far too shoddily done to give... Read More...

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before. A grizzled badass without a lot to say wanders the wasteland of the post-apocalypse, dispensing justice against armies of bandits and slowly learning to care again after encountering someone who melts their icy heart. That’s the premise of many movies and it is also the premise of […]

Scorched Earth is a movie that will be coming out on February 2 of 2018. Like its name suggests, the setting is an Earth that has undergone an environmental collapse, which has caused enormous casualties. As a result, even though it has been generations and generations since that happened, human civilization remains tenuous, which is to be expected when Scorched Earth is being marketed as a post-apocalyptic movie. With that said, human civilization manages to be functional enough in the setting to support bounty hunters, which happen to include Gina Carano’s character Attica Gage. Said character is seeking to claim

The first trailer has been released for a new post-apocalyptic action film called Scorched Earth. The story is set in a future where the world has been destroyed by an environmental collapse. The film stars Gina Carano as a bounty hunter who is on a mission to take down a ruthless outlaw.
This looks like a made for TV movie that you would find on the SyFy Channel. There's a market for those kinds of films, but I don't think it looks that good. Maybe it will interest some of you, though. Here's the synopsis:
The planet has suffered an environmental collapse; the air became dangerous to breathe, the water became toxic, and billions of people died. Generations later, mankind has finally re-established a rudimentary society, in an attempt to pick up the pieces that continue to blister in the sun. Attica Gage (Gina Carano) is a bounty hunter with...

"What makes you so different than the bounties you drag in here?" An official trailer has debuted online for a post-apocalyptic sci-fi action movie titled Scorched Earth, from actor-turned-director Peter Howitt. Set in a future where Earth has been ravaged (scorched?) and destroyed, the story follows a bounty hunter, played by Gina Carano, who gets into some major trouble when she tries to bring down a ruthless outlaw. This seems like such an odd, unoriginal mashup of bounty hunters, post-apocalyptic tropes, and maybe a bit of sci-fi, but not really. The full cast includes John Hannah, Stephanie Bennett, Alisha Newton, Ryan Robbins, Nathan Mitchell, and Patrick Gilmore. I hate to be so blunt, but this looks like a really terrible made-for-tv SyFy film. I'm really not that interested in seeing this, but check it out below anyway. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Peter Howitt's Scorched Earth, direct from...

Sean Bean has been cast as the lead in TNT’s drama pilot Legends executive produced by Homeland‘s Howard Gordon. The Game Of Thrones alum replaces Brendon Fraser, who was originally cast in the role but exited the project last month. Based on the novel by Robert Littell, Legends centers on Martin Odum (Bean), a deep-cover operative who has an uncanny ability to transform himself into a different person for each job. Gordon, Jeffrey Nachmanoff and Mark Bomback developed Legends, which is produced by Fox 21. No stranger to tough guy roles, Bean played Eddard Stark on the first season of HBO’s Game Of Thrones. Among his other roles, the British actor played Boromir in Peter Jackson’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy. As was announced at this year’s Toronto Film Festival, Bean is set to star in Scorched Earth, a post-apocalyptic action film that 24’s Brad Turner will direct.
