Average but interesting
user-890-746397 January 2014
Well, the acting was terrible. The plot was implausible, and corny, but had a few interesting turns. My advice: persist past the first 30min of this: it does get quite a bit better. It was unconventional in a few ways, which I liked because I'm wacko and like unconventional things. If you don't, forget this movie. An example is the soundtrack, which has a dreamy, odd, out-of-place feel. I have to admit that I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know what would happen. This was probably a great book with an average director and a small budget. So many of the scenes were awkward and too hard to watch; I covered my eyes quite a few times. The choice of leads was also interesting - neither of them exceptionally good looking, but with perfect bodies. Lastly, I have to mention the sex scenes. There's a 'tasteful' amount of nudity, including a couple penis and bum shots. There is a sex scene in the desert that, I think, is more realistic than most I've seen. (I liked it because I'm unconventional.)

Is G.A Hauser the new Tommy Wiseau?
dmanyc22 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Capital Games is about Steve, an ex-cop turned ad agency salesman whose life and career gets upended when Brit/Aussie/foreign dude Mark is hired by the firm. At first, Steve fears losing his precious job and the account he'd been working on for years. But a work retreat changes things for both men. Also, Mark is engaged to a butterface woman and a hot gay male lawyer, who also happens to know Steve's ex-girlfriend. Mark believes he has to go along with the wedding despite having feelings for Steve and fearing he'll lose everything (dude, you do realize being gay in the 2010s is no big deal especially in Cali, right?) So Steve goes from hating Mark to a secret rendezvous with Mark to stalking him and this loop go on and on and on. Also, we get a brief explanation on why he became an ex-cop (something about daddy pointing a gun at him because ex-girlfriend was black). I don't know anything about this G.A. Hauser guy whose name is all over the credits, but this movie felt like a gay The Room. The acting is bad, the filming is wobbly, the dialog is corny, and wayyy too many aerial shots of the city, deserts, and beaches. This is suppose to be a movie, not a travelogue. On the plus side, the guys go shirtless a lot. If you're looking for a cheesy bad film, go for it. If not, look elsewhere.

Really funny but not deliberately
ricktheis114 August 2019
I found myself chuckling at how ridiculous the plot, dialogue and acting were so it deserves 5 out of 10 for making me laugh. Oh and the music is cheestastic too. I hope it was a learning experience for everyone involved.

Ridiculous
sfgs4154 June 2018
Implausible plot. Poorly acted. Amateurish production.

Trying to find something positive to say... a few of the actors are decent looking.

Not worth the time.

very interesting and romantic movie
rosanawati19 April 2014
I really love this movie, very interesting story, romantic guys and beautiful actors, I wish the movie is longer, well at least until they both get married, that would be wonderful. Eric Presnall and Gregor Cosgrove really match and their acting is very good, really look like real gay couple. I love them very much. I'm curious to know how did it feel for them to kiss each other passionately like that during the shooting? my favorite scene is when they both kissed in the elevator, after kissing, they were smiling and look so happy, it looks so real and make me smile big. Eric seemed really like to kiss and touch Gregor's long hair, it is so sweet. I love the ending too, though I wish to see them kissing again in the car.

Not just bad, it's inauthentic, and here's why
ekeby22 July 2018
I worked in advertising, so I'm used to seeing ad agencies on screen that have nothing to do with what that world is really like. And that's the case here.

But I also began to feel that nothing about these characters seemed real either. And that wasn't just because of the atrocious acting (particularly from supporting characters). So I looked at the other reviews here and see a couple extolling this as a good version of the G. A. Hauser book. Never heard of G.A. Hauser, so looked "him" up.

It's not a him. It's a her. She's written over 120 gay (M/M) romance novels/stories. Now, I'm not saying women can't write about gay men. Some of the best novels of our world were written by women (Highsmith, Renault, Yourcenar). But those were literary works, not romance books--the kind that the French describe as "a book to read with one hand."

So. This is a cartoon story that doesn't really have anything to do with how gay life really works. This is somebody's fantasy of what gay life might be like with a couple of stereotypical hunky guys as the primary characters.

This is garbage. Story and production. Every aspect.

However. If you're gay and you found this entertaining, well, I'm guessing you don't have a lot of experience in a gay community and that most of your knowledge of gay life is from secondary sources.

That's okay, especially if you're young, or inexperienced, or closeted, or living in the boondocks. Just please don't think that there is anything real or authentic about what is presented in this movie. It's more like fanfic or Yaoi. If you can enjoy it on that level, fine. But for gay men looking for something authentic, you won't find it here.

It's ok .....
cekadah20 April 2021
.... But the story is very short on substance. There are too many 'holes' to completely understand the 'love' between the two main characters. The 'lust' is clear because both Steve and Gregor are easy on the eyes (which this movie shows off repeatedly). Steve & Gregor are very into each other physically.

The story ends with both seemingly happy to be together but 'why'?

NOT TERRIBLE
KevinP19 January 2020
The 10 ratings are wholly unjustified, but so are the 1s and 2s. It's true that the protagonist's backstory is meaningless, and the blushing bride is talent-free, and the ending was a cliche stolen from a well-known straight film, BUT the main players' acting can't be discredited because of the script, and the direction can't be maligned because of the script. Did I mention that it's not a very good script? There are much worse ways to spend a couple of hours than watching this. And it's free on Amazon Prime.

Hated it!
tommy567711 August 2018
Lists are easy: Terrible movie Abysmal acting Lousy plot development Abysmal acting Occasionally there's a good gay themed movie but sifting through the crap to get there is painful. This movie is evidence that star ratings mean nothing. Officer Steve is adorable & probably the only person in the cast that can almost act. In search of a good independent gay themed movie? Well, this ain't it.

Biggest trash ever
janmaruska8 January 2018
Even the doubtful acting of, I think all, of the actors, it is not survivable to look at the out of blue editing cuts, horrible music and trashy image compositions that probably belongs to 90s soap operas from south America (and I am probably being too harsh to that genre).

The long awaited film adaptation from a G.A. Hauser book
glf-521 October 2013
I am a HUGE fan of G.A. Hauser's books and was thrilled to be able to get an advanced copy of her film, "Capital Games" at the GRL 2013. The film was beyond my expectations. Steve Miller (Eric Presnall) has recently split up with his girlfriend Sonja as well as quit the LAPD. Deciding to get into the advertising world he encounter suave Mark Richfield (Gregor Cosgrove) and electricity as well as sparks fly. The firm has a retreat in the Santa Fe Desert and Steve becomes very competitive with Mark. At the retreat they get to know each other very well and Steve also finds out that Mark has a fiancé, Sharon. Steve not convinced that Mark is totally straight goes to his home and runs into Mark's very sexy roommate, Lawyer, Jack Larsen (Shane Keough. I do not want to give away anything more. The cinematography is beautiful as are the songs in the film which the multi-talented G.A. Hauser also wrote. My only complaint is that the film was not longer, since I got so involved with the characters. The three leads do a fine job in their performances. So looking forward to more screen adaptations of G.A. Hauser's books BRAVA!!!

What movie were the other reviewers watching?
dbkdances8 August 2017
I looked forward to this movie based on the reviews I saw on IMDb. The first one was the only one I should have heeded. The rest sounded like they were written by friends of the company.

The acting was dreadful. Eric, his sister, and Mark's fiancée were blatantly overacting. Moreover, I saw no chemistry between the leads. I believed Mark's ambivalence and the anxiety over his predicament, but even he was hard to take. I don't know if the problem can be traced to the director or the actors.

It could have been a real interesting portrait of straight men falling for each other - instead it was a bust.

mixed in run ingredients
Kirpianuscus15 May 2021
The basic sin of this film is the wrong use of cliches, the not inspired acting and a story so familiar or eccentric ( both works in same measure ) than you ignore it. In essence, a story of ambition. In fact, pretext for a very easy film in which different ingredients are mixed in run and the film seems be saved by hot scenes and great bodies or by the resemblance between Rory Cosgrove and Lorenzo Lamas / Eric Presnall and Zac Efron. Like other films of same genre, the only problem remains the potential of story. But, with few drops of indulgence, not expecting too much and not ignoring few good moments and intense moments, a pretty film.

I only wacthed this because of Rory Cosgrove. That's all this movie has going for it.
manuelasaez13 April 2023
Where do I even begin? This movie was absolutely tragic, and I'm not talking about the storyline. So many bad things happening at once, it was hard to keep pace;

1. First of all, there was the acting. I think Rory Cosgrove was the only decent actor in the entire movie. Every single other actor delivered their lines as if this was their first film, and except for maybe the other male lead, not a single person in this entire movie had any talent. It was as if the Director or casting agent hired nothing but friends and family. It was truly some of the worst acting I have ever seen in a movie, and that's saying a lot.

2. Secondly, the soundtrack. What the hell were they thinking? The music was awkward, poorly placed, poorly selected, and it sounded like a High School "battle of the bands" set for a very untalented group of musicians. Horrible lyrics, even worse composition and the genres were all over the place. Did just ONE single person compose this film? Did no one else mention the lack of cohesion in the music throughout the film? This was the greatest offender, to be honest. A great soundtrack can make or break even the most mediocre film, and this one just dropped every single ball it had in that department.

3. Lastly, the story; one of the corniest, cliched stories there are, and the ending was just ridiculous. The scenes of intimacy between the leads was the only good thing about this film; it was tasteful, classy, and not gratuitous, which is rare in gay cinema. The story itself just left so much to be desired. I just shook my head in disbelief when it was all over. This was neither romantic nor plausible. Even under the best circumstances, the ending would have still been entirely messed up.

I'll be honest, I only watched the film because Rory Cosgrove is absolutely drop-dead gorgeous. The hair, the eyes, the lips, the smile; I will watch anything that dude is in because he is an absolute, bonafied dreamboat. Like a prettier version of Henry Cavill. I swooned every time he showed his pretty face on screen. Literally, the only reason to watch this movie is this man, that's it. He is the sole redeemable quality about this whole hour and thirty minute experience.

In summary, this movie was not good, and veers very close to being one of the worst gay movies I've seen in a long time, but Cosgrove is the only reason you ABSOLUTELY need to watch it. Just focus on him, let everyone else melt away, and your viewing experience will be that much more enjoyable.

All 5 stars are for Cosgrove. Every single one.

American Romantic Movie? I would say it made me laugh!
javierubio18 April 2020
I ever seen a movie so away from Romanticism, Passion, Desire, and Real Drama! Everything was so despair, the story, the acting, the direction and even the capture of the camera at the end when everybody was turning over to see the ex police man coming to the church. It has been so corny and so overwhelming that instead of being upset i started to laugh about how distant from reality this movie was. In few moments I though that i was watching a cartoon movie instead of real characters!

Great concept, but really?
pierce-mn110 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The leading character, Steve Miller is more interesting than the second lead, but really. The plot was dreary and needed some umph. The character development was non-existent. Some narrative to let the audience in on what's going on with all those driving scenes would have been helpful, too. The last 15 minutes seem endless! Spoiler: it's a rip-off of The Graduate, too.

During this quarantine, there are far better movies than this thing!

Romantic nonsense with unbelievable script
ptomley4714 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Two 'straight' guys meet have a 'chance' encounter and want to get married to each other for the rest of their lives! Even Hallmark is better and more real. Don't one stand and casual sex exist in this fantasy gay world. It's sex and marriage that's it in this 'romantic' fantasy gay world. The acting is very uneven with all the cast, there's no chemistry between the two principals. In this world. A LAPD cop walks into a advertising executive job, don't ask me how or why but in this silly world it's believable If you are looking for a romantic gay story avoid this film it's so unreal, it's like a 1930's movie with gay guys with no talent for acting and no script. I rated it a 2 because I sat through the whole film with my mouth open thinking no way it can get more stupid and unreal but it did and the ending is pedestrian and idiotically simplistic to make it happy. It made my skin crawl it's so bad

A Very Enjoyable Gay Romance to Watch Again and Again
EnglishGayBloke31 December 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is a gay romance between two "straight" advertising agency executives who are adversaries in their company. In all fairness, a lot of this adversity is directed by Steve towards Mark, who just stands up for himself against Steve. From the start of the film, you can see Steve is a very driven, focused person. He will always give 110% to anything he does in life.

Steve Miller is a working-class American ex-cop who has joined the ad agency. He's been working on the Foist account for 3 years and expects to get it when its up for grabs. Then along comes Mark Richfield, an English upper-class guy who has just joined the company, who makes the mistake of nicking Steve's parking space. Then Mark seems to be up for grabs to automatically get the Foist account. That puts Mark on Steve's personal radar and hit-list.

There is a team-bonding exercise in the desert. Steve does his usual take-control thing. He HAS to be the leader. He manages in one exercise to get stranded in the desert overnight with Mark. They squabble a fair bit as they usually do, then Steve takes charge as he usually does, snogs Mark breathless and things kick off. BOY do they kick off! So Steve and Mark have one fantastic gay night together, then they get back to town and Steve discovers Mark is engaged and due to be married in a month's time. Do you think this is going to stop Steve? Heck no!

The film shows Mark to be a bit spoiled and vulnerable perhaps due to his posh upbringing, which he admits to. He is definitely needy out in the desert at night when he is scared that Steve will abandon him.

Mark gets panicked by Steve stropping off after another squabble and says desperately "you can't leave me alone" then Steve says "I won't", that is one of the most romantic parts of this film for me. Steve also tells Mark later that he is high-maintenance, and Mark cheerfully admits it.

I won't say any more about the rest of this film, I don't want to spoil the ending, but it is worth making the effort to watch.

In my opinion, the acting overall was very good. The two leads, Eric Presnall (Steve) and Gregor Cosgrove (Mark) were excellent. I would like to see more of these two (although in this film we saw a LOT of Gregor Cosgrove heheh :P) What more can I say about Gregor Cosgrove? This guy is HOT!!! To be fair, Eric Presnall is very attractive too. The sexual chemistry between these two guys is sizzling!

I absolutely love this film. It is a gay romance I will be able to watch again and again, from start to end, because I love the script, the acting and Steve and Mark in particular.

Also have to say the musical score is great. The songs are really good and relate to the mood of each scene. I'm going to look into whether there is a soundtrack to buy for this film.

It flows evenly
steeleronaldr10 April 2020
I like a love story that isn't in your face or so far fetched that it becomes annoying. This movie flows evenly throughout which at times delivers the goods. It's not a heavy hitter but a sensual story about two driven guys that after a steamy night while lost in the desert slowly come to realize that what they have is real. Don't expect a "Titanic" type movie of the corporate world cause it's not. Just a steamy love story to get lost in with the characters and nothing more. The leads ain't the best actor's out there but their beefy bodies make up for that. In all it's a pleaser and nothing more.

Extra Ordinary
jivon-jackson27 May 2020
What I enjoyed about this project , was that it involved two average guys. No special, no guns, no death, no fights. Just life. The wedding was a bit over the top, but the story needed some angst. Loved this piece & thought the leafs were EXTRAORDINARY!

An excellent movie - very real and honest
sinnerofcinema10 May 2014
This is a great film about some very real and serious themes that are finally getting their due diligence. Its the bromance with sexual attraction in the mixed. SMSM (Straight Men who have men with other men) is actually a group of folks that exist that toil with this sort of issues. Im very glad the author has had the courage to bring this film to fruition for more films like these are needed in order to further address this segment of the population that is very real to the gamut of sexuality. I can only highly recommend this film because of the story, acting and the films earnestness in finding a voice that is often dismissed as just mere curiosity/bisexuality. The new generations will prove that sexual fluidity is more where we are all are because the heart love who the heart loves.

Great Love Story
kimosbabies-8683830 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
CONTAINS (small) SPOILERS:

I loved this movie. I recently re-watched it and was amazed at how well it was done, especially given its limited budget. Some of the supporting cast's performances were good and some not so good. But the pacing, set design and cohesiveness of the plot were exceptional. The cinematography was stellar, using great aerial and freeway footage of L.A. And the music, much of which I believe was written for the show, was incredible; it really intensified and deepened key scenes like the beach, the car drives (all of them) and the scenes in Steve's bedroom.

The two leads were superb and their portrayals are not only passionate but, importantly, ring true to people who have been in this situation. Both Eric and Gregor are incredibly handsome men, in very different ways, and their chemistry and attraction for each other poured off the screen. They both deserve future consideration for meaty, demanding roles.

I have to say that the movie was intensely and beautifully erotic, but never slipped into any semblance of pornography or even soft-porn kitsch. The scene with Steve in his officer's uniform "frisking" Mark against the wall could be studied by novice filmmakers on how to depict explosive sexual tension without the need to bare a lot of skin. And the few subtle scenes of the naked male form lovingly caught both the power and vulnerability of a man's body and soul.

Best, the ending was joyful, as it had to be for these two characters. I note from people who read the novel that this was a pretty faithful interpretation of a great and romantic book.

Give this movie a chance. It's tastefulness, attention to detail (especially in some wonderful music) and, most importantly, some great acting by the two leads paint a worthy image of two men deeply in love.

gilbertjones-546-59777923 September 2018
I loved this movie and bought the DVD after watching it on a subscription service. It is far and above the average "gay" movie in both acting and production. The two main characters, especially Eric Presnall, are georgous...and their chemistry is palpable...Like MANY movies,it takes a few minutes to really get going.I won't give away any plot themes or story lines, but when viewed with an open mind, this is a very entertaining and enjoyable movie!

Breaking the Code
jromanbaker29 January 2024
Two supposedly straight men falling in love with each other in a really mainstream gay film would probably get married and spend their lives in misery. This is the code to attract ' sympathetic ' audiences who want to shed a few crocodile tears. But in this film the code is broken. No spoilers but in this scenario both of the excellent lead actors realise that love needs perfect sex as well, and they have it either in the desert or between the sheets. One of them was an ex-cop and there is a gloriously sexy scene where the cop ' arrests ' his lover. There is humour in the script and in the copy I saw the bodies were totally uninhibited but you have to glimpse quickly to see it. A romantic and genuinely erotic gay film with a touch of a thriller about it as both deny their homosexuality and then they see each other and that denial is thrown out of the window. Both of the fighting/loving men are in the big business of advertising and they have money. I will forgive them that despite certain objections I have to the rat race, but then in Howard Hawks battling love/hate films ( and the film in places is worthy of Hawks ) Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant were not exactly poor. This could have been called ' Bringing Back the Straight Gay Baby. ' Excellent all round.
