Ryan Coogler and Peter Nicks met in 2012 when Coogler was making “Fruitville Station” and needed help securing access to a location. Nicks, who was finishing his first feature documentary, “The Waiting Room, came to the rescue. Nine years later, Cooglar hired Nicks to run the nonfiction arm of his production company Proximity Media, which has a five-year overall exclusive television deal with The Walt Disney Co.
The fruits of that partnership have been revealed this summer. Proximity’s first feature documentary, “Anthem,” which Nicks directed, was released in June on Hulu. On July 21, Nicks’ “Stephen Curry: Underrated” will debut on Apple TV +. The doc, which chronicles the NBA star’s life and career, made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
“When I heard that Ryan was starting a company, I put together this little PowerPoint presentation and pitched him,” remembers Nicks. “I said, ‘Hey, are you guys going to support nonfiction?...

American Idol winner Iam Tongi apologized after facing backlash for acting “disrespectfully” while singing the national anthem at this year’s MLB Homerun Derby.
Tongi was invited to sing “The Star Spangled Banner” at the MLB Home Run Derby in Seattle and accidentally kept his baseball hat on while singing. He was later slammed by fans who called him “disrespectful.”
He apologized in a YouTube video posted, captioning it, “First try at singing the National Anthem. So nervous that it was in front of such a huge crowd. And apologize for being so nervous and forgot to take off the hat.” The video featured Tongi’s beautiful rendition of the national anthem at the game.
In addition to the video, Tongi shared another apology on his Twitter account.
“Tens of thousands of people. I walk out and my uncle reminds me to remove my hat before I start singing. I remember.

Almost exactly 10 years ago, Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale” launched the young Oakland filmmaker into the upper echelons of Hollywood influence. With “Black Panther” and “Creed,” Coogler brought fresh energy and social consciousness to existing franchises while expanding their appeal to underserved audiences. Now, those efforts have expanded to the documentary realm.
Two years ago, Coogler rooted his filmmaking efforts beyond the blockbuster arena in the creation of a production company, Proximity Media, which yielded studio efforts like “Space Jam 2” and the Oscar-nominated “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Initially co-founded by Coogler with wife Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, the company eventually added a non-fiction division overseen by fellow Bay Area filmmaker Peter Nicks. Over the past year, that collaboration has yielded the company’s first two documentary releases, the Sundance-premiering NBA portrait “Stephen Curry: Underrated” and now “Anthem,” which premiered last month on Hulu. When Jully Black performs Canada’s national anthem at the Toronto Metropolitan University’s graduation ceremony on Tuesday, July 27, she’ll be tweaking the lyrics to make an important point.
As CBC News reports, the “Seven Day Fool” singer will be altering the lyrics to “O Canada” at the behest of the university, changing “our home and native land” to “our home on native land,” in acknowledgement of Canada’s theft of Indigenous land.
“It’s amazing not to feel invisible anymore, and to be welcomed into a space and asked to contribute to something so beautiful,” she said.

"How can you universalize the experience of being American." Hulu has launched an official trailer for their documentary film Anthem, which will be streaming on Hulu at the end of this month. Just in time for the 4th of July, of course. Anthem is Onyx Collective's new doc – a musical journey across America to re-imagine our national anthem for today. It's executive produced by Ryan Coogler, and directed by Peter Nicks. The film is hosted by composer Kris Bowers and record producer Dahi. Other guest stars include Joy Harjo, Ruby Amanfu, Charity Bowden, and Cecilia Cassandra Peña-Govea (aka La Doña). The film follows these two musicians as they travel from city to city engaging in conversations about the national anthem, resulting in a "journey to remix the American Sound." The film recently premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. This honestly doesn't exactly seem like the most exciting concept for a film,...

When the American Film Institute announced last year that it was merging AFI Docs, the organization’s annual Washington, D.C., documentary film festival, into the Los Angeles-based AFI Fest, Jamie Shor called Sky Sitney.
Shor, president of PR Collaborative, and Sitney, director of the film and media studies program at Georgetown, had both previously worked for AFI Docs. Shor’s publicity firm had done work for the former festival, previously known as Silverdocs, while Sitney served as AFI Docs festival director from 2005-2014.
“Sky and I were both thinking to ourselves that Washington, D.C., was not going to have a doc presence,” says Shor. “It collectively broke our hearts.”
So, the duo spent the last year and a half creating and building DC/Dox, a new nonfiction film festival based in the nation’s capital. The inaugural four-day festival kicks off on June 15 with the D.C. premiere of...
