Netflix’s recent spate of international content showcases has continued today with an update on Korea.
Among the key updates for its 2024 Korea slate is Oldboy director Park Chan-wook (Oldboy) releasing his first project with Netflix at the end of this year, titled Uprising.
The film, directed by Sang-man Kim and written by Shin Chul, was previously known as War and Revolt, and is due in Q4. It is billed as a “gripping journey through the lives of two childhood friends turned adversaries.” Gang Dong-won, Park Jeong-min, Cha Seung-won, Kim Shin-rock, Jin Sun-kyu and Jung Sung-ill star. Park will co-write and co-produce.
Elsewhere, Netflix will launch new seasons of Gyeongseong Creature, Hellbound and Sweet Home as well as unscripted shows like Physical: 100 and Single’s Inferno. The second season of mega-hit Squid Game will also premiere, as announced last week.

Currently revelling in the success of recently-uploaded Don Lee-starring film “Badland Hunters” and already teasing the second season of “Squid Game,” Netflix has unveiled a major slate of Korean films and series for 2024.
In August last year, Netflix publicly committed to investing $2.5 billion on Korean content over the next four years. That reflected both Netflix’s position as the country’s leading streamer, with an estimated 6.5 million subscribers, and its adopted role as one of the biggest exporters of Korean film and TV content.
“We were able to make this [investment] decision because we have great confidence that the Korean creative industry will continue to tell great stories,” said the streamer’s co-chief Ted Sarandos at the time of the spending commitment.

Two years after co-starring in Netflix‘s hit “Red Notice” with Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot is back in the Top 10 charts for the week of August 7 with her action-thriller “Heart of Stone.” Read on for this week’s analysis.
Gadot’s undeniable star power was on full display as “Heart of Stone” only premiered on the streamer this past Friday, and it was able to easily top the English-language list with 33.1 million views worldwide. It was the #1 watched film in most of the Americas (except Canada), Africa, Asia and Europe, and a great start for what should be another Netflix hit. “Red Notice” is famously Netflix’s most-watched movie ever, with 230.9 million global views total, but “Heart of Stone” will give Gadot a good opportunity to show that she doesn’t need the boys to get viewers watching.

Drama Schools Uncovered
Breeding grounds for bad behavior: UK drama schools are the foundations for some of the finest acting talent in the world. Anthony Hopkins, Judi Dench, and Gary Oldman are among the icons who learned their craft in the hallowed halls of these British institutions. But Deadline’s Drama Schools Uncovered investigation this week revealed that schools, including the revered Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, are breeding grounds for sexual harassment, discrimination, and bullying. We revealed that 11 of the most prestigious schools in the UK received nearly 100 misconduct complaints over the past three years, with around half of the sexual harassment and racism cases upheld.

Exclusive: In the opening scene of Netflix survival show Zombieverse, a dating couple in a bar in Seoul’s trendy Hongdae district lean in for a kiss.
But tell-tale bloodshot eyes and popping veins on the girl’s face signal something might just be amiss. Instead of a smooch, the young guy ends up having his neck chomped while blood is spurting everywhere. Cue screaming and chaos as the café’s other guests flee the scene – Seoul’s zombie apocalypse has begun.
Produced by Kakao Entertainment and launched globally earlier this week, Zombieverse is a hybrid immersive reality show that forms part of Netflix’s expanding Korean unscripted slate, which has already seen hits such as Physical 100 drop on the platform. Ten contestants must work together to secure basic necessities and survive the zombie onslaught with the ultimate goal of reaching an evacuation ship on Wolmi Island (35 kilometres outside Seoul). The best zombie stories center relatable every-people to root for in the ongoing apocalypse. Zombieverse, a new Korean unscripted TV series featuring people trying to survive a fictional zombie outbreak in Seoul, has an eclectic, mostly relatable cast of characters going for it (in addition to the truly remarkable stunt team).
Heading into this show, a Korean audience would be familiar with most if not all of these celebrity cast members, tipping the average viewer off to the fact that this is a reality show almost immediately. However, if you’re not part of the Korean audience—and you don’t regularly watch Korean variety shows—then you are probably, at least initially, at a loss.
The series begins with five celebrity hosts sitting on a couch, commenting on a fictional dating reality show mere feet away. Without warning, one of the dating show contestants starts mauling the neck of their potential love interest,...

August has arrived, and with it, the last full month of summer-worthy shows and flicks, at least for 2023. From all the summer sensations to food weather, carnival fun and, of course, the lack of school, the streamer’s film slate will update with some appropriate flicks like “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,” “Eat Pray Love,” “Despicable Me” and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” respectively.
If you’re one of those who senses the change in the air as soon as the salty summer heat gives way to crisp fall fog, “Heartstopper” Season 2, complete with its cartoon drawings of leaves, waits for you starting August 3. “The Lincoln Lawyer: Season 2 Part 2” concludes the two-part followup to the legal drama starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. “Heart of Stone,” a big tentpole film starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan, promises action-lovers a good time.
For those who didn’t get enough of the Depp v.

With its list of new releases for August 2023, Netflix is giving the anime world another shot.
No, we’re not talking about the streamer’s usual anime offerings – which are present this month in the form of Ragnarok season 3 (Aug. 24) and other titles – we’re talking about Netflix’s attempt to make live-action anime adaptations a thing. Following the relative failure of its Cowboy Bebop remake, Netflix is giving it another go, this time with arguably an even bigger anime classic. One Piece will premiere on Aug. 31. Telling the story of beloved straw hat wearing pirate Monkey D. Luffy, this adaptation will attempt to do original creator Eiichiro Oda and his many fans proud.
