Not sure what's going on
saullodanielle3 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't care about the books, or games, or ethnicity of who is cast. Those don't guide my view of the show at all. I'm just looking at this interpretation and I appreciate all the characters and enjoy the acting.

What I do care about is the writing, directing, and editing. Scenes are just thrown together, decisions made by characters make little sense, and the dialogue so often is trite.

New Ciri is definitely this way because of Creepo who likes messing with girls lives (we know who that dude is). Like why do you even need a name. But whatever.

Yen is 90 and knows all about Aretuza, but tells Ciri basically nothing? Allows the most sought after person to traipse around with a boy? Like I get being a parent is hard, but this is silly. Oh! But let's have a conclave. This will fix everything even though you can't trust any Mage right now (or outside influence). Then a dead queen no one cared about is used as a pawn and the tides change...snooze.

I really liked Robbie Amwell's character so that was a huge bummer but seeing Cahir do the deed he didn't want to was good tv. I like the character of Cahir and who plays him, so this was probably the most interesting scene of the whole episode. I hope he goes full evil.

I wish this show was better. It has good moments, characters, and actors. But the decline is real. It's trying to chess move like GoT but it falls flat because we don't get enough story to support it. We don't see Ciri and Yen grow with their magic. I wish we had fuller episodes with the core three so we even cared more. It's just been too disjointed. Sad, because it really did have a lot of promise.

I did not understand the bad reviews until this episode.
tylerchrestman1 August 2023
I was reading episode reviews as I went through the first two episodes and I did not get why they were so negative. This episode changed that. The story is a mess.

Ciri is the worst. She is irrational, ungrateful, and annoying. She is supposed to be one of the leads but she is the worst part of the show and so much of the narrative is driven forward by the idiotic decisions they wrote for her character.

It is like they were writing out Cavil before they had to. He is not in the episode very much which is a shame because he is still the best part of the show.

The overall narrative is doing a game of thrones type thing, but unlike that show you do not care about many of the secondary characters. Just not as good as the first two seasons.

"They were real."
LegendaryFang568 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(880-word review) This was the best episode so far. That doesn't mean it was incredible; don't get me mistaken. Still, it did feel better than the first two episodes. There was more smoothness to the moving and progression of the plotlines.

In typical fashion concerning this show (and in more ways than one, it seems, with the positive aspects), however, there was a bit of a catch with that: the slight lack of clarity and continuity with the scenes of Philippa and Eva/Rience and Lydia, and the ending.

A gap in Philippa and Eva's dialogue was seemingly present compared to the prior knowledge we've been given; same with Rience and Lydia's scene, as if you had missed something or things weren't made clear enough previously.

And the ending was abrupt, given that the last time Ciri was on screen, she contacted Geralt in the middle of town. Now, she's out in the middle of the woods, presumably for an evening ride considering her speed (like she's already running from what hasn't appeared yet) and because where would she go? Where WAS she going? To Geralt? How would she know his location? Yes, she asked, "Where are you?" But is that supposed to be enough information, even though there was nothing further/no answer? Better yet, how did HE know where SHE was at the end?

Both instances of slight discontinuity can potentially be "accounted for" by the assumption that they weren't an oversight but rather a scene or two was cut for some stellar reason - in which case, that's still, in and of itself, a bit of an oversight, if only by incompetence rather than purposely or not.

As an extension to the "necessary negative to counteract and taint a positive" complexity for the ages, Mr. "I asked for a private audience to protect your secret" Cahir, in his infinite and genius wisdom, said that in front of three no-name, no-dialogue, irrelevant guards behind him.

And yet, our White Flame, Emhyr, is a grander genius than our "strong for a scrawny little..." Cahir, as he so kindly revealed to us at the end of the second season by sharing his connection, albeit secret (but he's SO kind), with Ciri to Fringilla and Cahir: and a congregation of inferior soldiers.

But through the smooth moving and progression, a lingering problem for me, which is likely a combination of two things, is the onset of confusion linked to everything happening; there's too much going on at once (it feels that way at the very least), and while I can still unravel everything, it's the fact that things are confusing in the first place - that shouldn't be such an easy and prominent observation to make.

This could be more because of how it's written rather than the nature of this expansive world, with many characters; their motivations/desires, multiple groups; their internal conflicts, and so on. I'll wager two things: Games of Thrones, an apt comparison to make, probably had more layers and more going on - and that the novels of this show aren't as disorienting. Good storytelling can be so vast and detailed, in various ways, and at the same time, digestible, and not by the incompatible modernity of the dialogue in this show.

And the second but one-and-the-same (depending on how you look at it) problem is my engagement and investment in what's happening, aka the lack thereof. Hardly anything going on feels as entertaining as it should be. There's a severe lack of excitement.

None of the plotlines have captured me. Even the central one revolving around Ciri (including building up Ciri's character journey to greater focus and personal development, like meeting a particular character who'll impact her character arc significantly), especially when Geralt and Yennefer are involved, doesn't have me.

Complexity and nuance are noticeably prominent elements of this world, particularly in this season thus far. But it feels watered down, and even then, the execution of them comes across as lacking. Other shows with those similarities of expansiveness and the like are assumably better in the excitement department with the undeniable moments but also manage to make the subtle but sharp, slow but meticulous elements of politics (plenty of characters: ambitious goals, clashing, conniving, moving pieces, etc.) genuinely engaging, and riveting. That's almost borderline nonexistent here, and I doubt the source material is at fault.

The stuff with Yennefer and Ciri/Yennefer and Tissaia, second to what's going on in Redania: some actual 4D chess by Dijkstra instead of being the underdog (which supposedly isn't an accurate representation of his character - oh, wait, it wasn't done by him - but turning it into his advantage off the cuff was the breadcrumb of all breadcrumbs) were the highlights of this episode, admittedly with some struggle.

But the most significant takeaway from this episode was that Isturd, sorry, Istredd, is back to bring us his escapades of monotones, sorry, monoliths, and the primal inner beast thoroughness required to dare research such blood-curdling things: just horrifying. You can't even imagine how brave this deity of a man is. He's the lifeline of this show!

Tl;dr: An improvement compared to the previous two episodes, yet with some questionable moments to boot, which relate to writing/clarity/continuity difficulties - nothing new for this show.

The show is losing me
shawnyu649 July 2023
... not because I'm not going to watch it anymore - I will finish it just to see where it goes - but I don't know what's happening anymore. That's a true feat considering I went over books twice (once through audio book), completed all 3 games as well as played standalone TCG Gwent so I know characters and the world better than most people. I can't imagine people watching this without having prior knowledge. So little time is spent on developing newly introduced characters and scenes jumps so often and nothing make sense to the point that I'm seriously starting to lose track of what's going on. It almost feels individual scenes are taken first without any directions, and then had to be cut and stitched together to have at least some resemblance of overarching story. It's so disconnected at this point that I had to clear my memory of what I already know about the source materials but when I do that, things actually got much worse because I realized that I've been unintentionally making justification and filling plot holes with what I already know. I know Henry Cavil's drama & leak stuff but never cared at this point but wow... this is much worse than I thought.

The best in season 3 so far
willfilm200112 July 2023
Despite totally rushed and washy ending scene I think it was a decent episode and clearly the best so far in season 3. Okay, the opening scene is also poorly written with its endless hammer-spoon-metaphor.

The dialogue has still too much exposition but the pacing and camera compositions were great in this one. Cinematography was mainly static, including the beautiful wide shots and editing was calmer.

The structure of a episode was also much sharper, the rhythm slower, the characters relied more to the story and the politics were kinda interesting this time. An emotional impact is at least somewhere.

Wish I Knew Why This Series Doesn't Do It For Me.
MovieBuff545430 June 2023
I have now completed two full seasons of The Witcher and am watching Episode 3 of Season 3. I can't figure out why this series doesn't grab me. There are so many wonderful things: Great casting and acting, set design is creative and detailed, location selection is spot on, characters are fun. Yet, yet, YET ... I find my mind continuously straying while watching. This series does NOT captivate me. That is unusual because I love fantasy, intrigue, and conflict. So, if anyone could possible enlighten me as to why this series is annoying boring, I'd love to have your input. Yes, I'll watch every episode. And I'll probably simultaneously complete crossword puzzles or read news articles because the show certainly does not demand my sole attention.

No wonder Cavill left
Jason243211 July 2023
The writers have such disdain for the source material it's hard to comprehend. Cavill does a heroic effort at trying to save this shipwreck but only so much can be done in the face of unbridled contempt for the books. I wonder why Hollywood keeps buying beloved IP and then twisting it in every way possible in service of THE MESSAGE. What a waste of money. Just make a new IP where you can make it "reflect the world in which we live." Or are you so devoid of creative talent that your only skill is destroying good content?

I look forward to watching Hollywood continue to self immolate. Money talks, and if they keep failing like this, eventually the people with money will have to step in and hire competent show runners.

I'm out.
g_i_marchant7 July 2023
I made it this far, but this episode finally did it, I'm done. I have been struggling with this show for a while now, season 1 was good, season 2 was ok, this season is terrible.

The acting is bad, the writing is worse, the editing is poor, far too many parts that are obviously green screen. No idea why the characters are always crying, I don't know who they are taking about half the time, I switched off.

It shouldn't have even been that hard, I'm told the books are good, the game was pretty good, so how have they managed to stuff this up so badly.

I tried, but that's it's, no more Witcher for me. If you want to watch something good then try Silo.

It has become a slippery slope..
Spiritus3330 June 2023
I'm beginning to understand why Cavill wanted to leave the show. I have read almost all books but even for me it is almost impossible to follow. Now I truly begin to appreciate the quality of a show like Game of Thrones. It lacks in all aspects that show shined:

A lot of characters are miscast. They don't have the weight or expression the book characters have.

The story, even though the books are for the most part pretty linear, is told in an unnecessary complicated manor.

The show misses the GoT darkness and gloominess . It's just filmed so 'soap opera Hollywoody'. Even if they would've just straight copy the games it would've been a better approach then this half baked try.

So sad because the story, the books and the dark, monster infested world, created by Andrzej Sapkowski lend themselves for a truly great show. But now it just feels like a trainwreck waiting too happen...

The Worse Cinematography in the Series
nightringer-768401 July 2023
Could it be, Henry Cavill was contracted by the minutes of screen time? Geralt was practically almost useless in this episode and even leas impressive.

Cavill was brilliant on battle scene, he has the credibility and experience. And in this episode is basically can be done by his stunt man and no one cares.

The story focused on Yennifer and Ciri, they took over the screen and only let a few minutes for Cavill's Geralt.

What's very sad and disappointing is the title if this episode is Reunion and the last scene was about Ciri and Geralt reunion. This result scene was shot like a college students film, very dry and clearly has robotic emotion. It's like looking at Cavill's mustache in theatrical release of Justice League,

A chaotic effort only good for brainless audience
loloimdb1 July 2023
Netfilx's The witcher has never been in my top 10 series, although being fond of The witcher universe (basically, books and video games).

Hanri Cavill was indeed the main reason this show was decent enough. Unfortunately, you can clearly see the after effects of Cahill vs producers/writers conflict.

I don't know all the details, but seing where this show is going, I would tend to support Cahill's view.

I honestly 100% support good writing and I think it must get paid accordingly. But I really hope those Witcher writers are not protesting with the writers guild of America, because they are totally not legitimate!

Basically, the story and the scenes are too chaotic to be appreciated. Most of them seem forced and useless, only there to please the largest audience possible with tons of stylish effects but no depth.

After watching this episode, I felt like going through a field of plot holes, with no major story progress. It's ok to have fillers when they focus on developping characters or side stories.

Here, this is just a pile of scenes put together, but with no substance and no consistency.

What of waste of a franchise... This is my second most frustrated book adaptation after Silo.

Cinematography made me cringe.
djurocks-723-4322665 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
That horse riding scene and reunion at the end were horrid. I'm not sure if we are letting some younger people take the helm or be responsible for parts within these episodes, but I cannot fathom how that was released like that.

The show as a whole is struggling to maintain it's edge and hook, but at the least it was always beautiful and pleasant to watch. If we are going to drop the ball on the visually striking and pleasant element, this show had better step up the plot and character interactions. I think everyone is getting tired of the politicians sitting around a table and bickering. This isn't game of thrones.

The show has become incomprehensible and very boring
rhroyhair19 July 2023
S1 was great. S2 okay... But S3 is a mess. Even worse, it's a tedious mess.

What's going on? Who knows. And who cares!

The cast are trying hard to act as if they care about the unnecessary scenes and story lines that can't be followed. It keeps jumping around from one boring location to another with boring formulaic scenes that don't move things along, people being killed etc for no reason, just characters and things happening that none cares about.

If you've read this far in my review you perhaps have the stamina to suffer the tedium. It's tedious.

Did I say it is not interesting? It really isn't.

I can't watch this anymore
AilishNi1 August 2023
Season 1 had me hooked, season 2 was good but not great and this season? I am so utterly confused by it.

I have watched 3 episodes and I don't think I can continue. It has not kept my interest beyond the first episode.

I find that the focus is no longer on Ciri and Geralt and that a lot of screen time is being devoted to characters who don't have much to do with the actual plot.

I found myself straying toward my phone during episode 3 as it just couldn't keep my attention.

Also the addition of modern language being used in a medieval fantasy themed show pulls me out of the story. "Fresh hell" being just one of them.

Poor Story Telling
MeatWagon9116 July 2023
It's rather annoying when shows have two major plot lines and alternate episodes telling each story. You get a great cliffhanger, but the next episode is something that's occurring on the other side.

You know what's worse? Throwing several plot lines in the same episode. Now I get why they separate them. This is an absolute mess.

Ignoring the Cavill v Director/Writer conflict, I imagine the viewer would still have a major complaint with the story. It's hard to simply remember what happens after spending an hour watching without distractions

If you wanna steer clear of the source material, you need to do a good job of it and this is pathetic.

Senseless and boring
ferigar11 July 2023
I had to speed up some of the parts of the ladies at Aretuza. Many of the stories are extremely boring, senseless, purposeless and seems a 6 year old has written the story.

I cannot take it anymore. It is (very) difficult to accept that something as great as Cavill doing the Witcher, wonderful and limitless world available to do great stories, it is squandered and annihilated so mercilessly. All just to please the wokism, some other people that really DON'T care at all about this type of fandom and lore, and who knows what else.

Enough torture. Cavill was absolutely right to leave, especially knowing he is not the main character anymore.

I watched enough for him. Know I don't have any reason. Sorry Henry...

What happened?
jalharper1 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The story doesn't seem to be developing. Intro of new unremarkable characters that don't add to anything. Exposition during dancing "I'm getting pregnant tonight " ... what is that adding? Random sing bards. Honestly season one was great this is just meh.

The wider continental war has faded. It's as though the writers are ignoring the main antagonists and drifting the season.

The dialogue is so light- Hollywood writer strike so get a 13 year old to write it "how many organism tonight?" Gerald fighting with Yen's first love.

Citi is soo precious so leave her with Jaskith of all people. Hmm.?

Certain things are being forced, without the chemistry of the existing cast that are carrying this show, it would be lost.....
jessicaheath19 July 2023
But I'm here to talk about how absolutely abysmal some of aesthetics are......the majority of the regulars have amazing wigs, makeup, and wardrobe. Everyone else.....atrocious. And that fake horse that Ciri is riding at the end of the episode in the close up shots is the most godawful stuffed animal I have ever seen. They did not even bother to make it look real. Incredibly low budget move right there. Its a shame because the majority of the show looks great so I dont see why they just suddenly throw some garbage in. The forced stuff.....need I say more? Unfortunately this review needs to be a certain length to post. The End.

What show is this Again?
TheConChronicles9 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Season 3 has been atrocious so far. This show has always done a bad job referring back to things and having the timeline make any sense. The Kingdoms, the names, the side characters, etc. I have no idea who they're talking about half the time or why I should care. This season has been a complete relapse. The pacing went from zero to crack head real quick. The CGI is pitiful. What was that scene where he's fighting an arm monster? And all these young girls heads are screeching bloody murder. Why do all of the extras and minor characters really suck at acting? Why do most of the side and main characters suck at acting? Yennifer and Tisea are the only two who can act. Coincidentally they're both very hot. Ohh and if one Cerilla wasn't enough now we have more? I think, not sure. Henry Cavil doesn't care, it shows. Lots and lots of screeching. Fights are cringey. All action is cringey in this season. Sets and makeup look cheep. This season has absolutely no soul.

Ouch! I will return to the books, then...
murrayjsm-4049521 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I have read the first two anthology books: The Last Wish & Sword Of Destiny & really enjoyed them. Now, I will start the pentology with Book 1 - Blood Of Elves.

Oh yeah, the show! What happened??? I was so lost & confused by this episode. So, Cavill bows out... & the show gets all kinky? It seemed to have switched focus from well thought out storytelling, fascinating characters, super cool monsters & great fight scenes.... to a random emphasis on sexual orientation?

Please don't get me wrong, I love erotic content, & films/series' with human sexuality as a central theme... but this is high fantasy with minimal emphasis on human sexuality, which is why most people prefer the first two seasons.

People who like fantasy, want to see fantasy. If you want to incorporate sexual themes, so be it, but do not deviate from the obligations of the genre or the plot & character story arcs.

Game Of Thrones incorporated sexual themes, but they were bi-products & therefore, the plot & character journeys kept us on the edge of our seats for at least seven seasons.

For example: that's fine Jaskier is revealed to be bi-sexual, but that revelation distracted from his purpose in the show. The direction of the show focused exclusively on his sexual preferences. But what is he doing??? Like, is he a spy? No, he disclosed to Geralt that he is working for the Radania Royality, & Geralt is okay with that. Like... big whoop! Where are the stakes for Jaskier, now? His character journey WAS compelling. But now, his character just flirts with the brother of King Vizimir.... who's a complete nincompoop! Jaskier, you can do better than that! Lol. Seriously though, I have no interest in whether his character ends up sleeping with "Prince Valium from Spaceballs wanna-be". However, we should be interested in whatever he is up to.

But I digress, just like the whole series digressed & now I want to watch something else.
