From 2010 to 2011, the remains of 11 people were discovered near Gilgo Beach in Long Island’s remote South Shore. The grisly discoveries sent waves of terror and grief through the community, and for more than a decade, the murders went unsolved. Then, in July 2023, there was a break in the case — and for the first time in 13 years, there was a clear suspect of who may have been responsible.
In the untitled three-part documentary series from Story Syndicate and director Liz Garbus, the conclusion to the multi-decade quest for justice unfolds in real time. The series will tell the stories of the victims’ lives via exclusive interviews with their families, and will review how police were finally able to identify Rex Heuermann, a prolific NYC architect living in Nassau County, as a suspect. Welcome to another look back at the biggest hits of 2023. Today, we’ll look through the documentaries and docu-series that picked up the most points in the Netflix top 10s throughout the year.
This list is compiled with data from FlixPatrol, which tracks the daily top 10s in over 90 countries globally. Their data provides a daily snapshot of what’s trending in the TV and movie list by providing points to each title that features. Although we love their data, it’s neither perfect nor an exact measurement of viewership. Netflix does provide its own data on this front, but it doesn’t allow us to paint a big picture of what was watched most in 2023 as it stands.
Because documentaries feature in the movie lists and docu-series feature in the TV list, we’ll split them separately. We’ll have a look at the documentaries and docu-series to do best globally first,...

A Florida court case that was the subject of the Netflix documentary Take Care of Maya has seen its defendants ask for a retrial.
Two weeks ago, a jury awarded $261 million in damages against Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. The court documents claimed 10-year-old Maya Kowalski was falsely imprisoned and battered by the medical team at All Children’s Hospital, and that contributed to her mother, Beata Kowalski’s, death by suicide.
The All Children’s attorneys filed for a retrial on Wednesday. Their request claimed that the jury foreman violated strict conduct rules during the trial.
Take Care of Maya was viewed almost 14 million times in two weeks following its June release.
Hospital attorneys claimed juror Paul Lengyel shared information about the case with his wife during the trial. She, in turn, shared it on social media platforms. Yolanda Lengyel also attended at least one day of the trial in Venice.

While corporate consolidation has led to smaller documentary production budgets and fewer indie doc sales, the demand for true-crime docus has skyrocketed over the last few years.
That’s good news for documentary production companies like Dan Cogan and Liz Garbus’ Story Syndicate. This year, Garbus, Cogan and Story Syndicate’s head of documentary and nonfiction, Jon Bardin, have produced three true-crime documentaries: Hulu’s “Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence,” Netflix’s” Take Care of Maya” and HBO’s “Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York.”
About a string of murders in 1990’s Manhattan, “Last Call,” like “Stolen Youth” and “Take Care of Maya,” has become a hit with audiences and critics alike. (The final episode in the four-part series air on July 30.)

Nearly four years after its last new episode aired, Suits is having a moment in the streaming world.
The former USA Network series set a viewing time record for an acquired series in the week of June 26-July 2. Suits had 3.14 billion minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen, easily surpassing the previous mark of 2.49 billion minutes for Manifest (before it became a Netflix original) in June 2021. The show became available on Netflix June 23; it also streams on Peacock.
The huge tally for Suits dwarfed the two other shows that topped the billion-minute mark for the week: The debut of The Witcher’s third season on Netflix pushed that show to 1.31 billion minutes of viewing, and The Bear grew by 18 percent week to week to 1.01 billion minutes. The latter is the second Hulu series (and the first produced by FX) to break the billion-minute threshold for a single week, after The Handmaid’s Tale.

Season two of The Bear served up a strong showing on the streaming charts for its premiere week.
The FX-produced Hulu series drew 853 million minutes of viewing time for the week of June 19-25, according to Nielsen — more than twice its best showing for season one last year. The Bear made Nielsen’s top 10 original series one time in 2022 with 349 million minutes.
The 853 million minutes for The Bear placed it second among original series, behind Netflix’s Black Mirror (1.55 billion minutes), and fifth among all titles. Former USA series Suits (2.32 billion minutes) was the overall leader for the week, which saw its 136-episode library debut on Netflix (it also streams on Peacock). “Take Care of Maya,” the new feature documentary on Netflix spotlighting medical world instances of families being falsely accused of child abuse, is meant to be the “beginning of the conversation” about a harrowing topic that remains misunderstood to many people, director Henry Roosevelt told TheWrap.
“There’s rarely an hour that goes by that we’re not getting a tweet, direct message, email, phone call or letter. It really shows you how widespread this problem is and how many people are experiencing something similar,” producer Caitlin Keating said. “People are saying that they saw themselves in this film in some way and the response has been overwhelming.”
The sometimes hard-to-watch documentary delves into the heartbreaking case of now 17-year-old Maya Kowalski, who was kept at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital for three months in 2016 against her will because doctors blamed her parents of “medical child abuse.”

There are medical nightmares, and there are legal nightmares. The story at the heart of Take Care of Maya encompasses both. The new Netflix documentary, premiering June 19, presents a damning account of how a sort of hospital-run child abuse/Cps mill allegedly destroyed one family in slow motion, keeping a sick girl from her parents until one of her parents could no longer take it. Like most documentaries, this one will play differently if you haven’t been following the real-life story, so continue reading with caution if you value the element of surprise.

Take Care of Maya is a documentary directed by Henry Roosevelt that tells the story of Maya, a patient suffering from chronic regional pain who was treated with Ketamine. The treatment involved inducing a five-day coma with Ketamine, a risky procedure that was only being done in Mexico at the time. Despite the potential danger, Maya recovered well after the procedure. However, a year later, Maya was admitted again, and this time, a different nightmare began. She was diagnosed with Munchausen by proxy, and the State of Florida took custody of her. Child protection services in Florida are privatized and have the power to take custody of a child if there is a risk involved.
This led to a legal battle between lawyers, custody battles, and a bureaucratic system in which Maya was caught in the middle. Regardless of who was right or wrong, the young girl was the one who suffered the most.

When Maya Kowalski was 10 years old, the once-vibrant Florida youngster started exhibiting a worrying array of ailments: Her feet began cramping and curling inward, she couldn’t stop coughing, headaches nearly incapacitated her, and lesions appeared on her limbs. Her doting parents, Jack and Beata, were desperate for not even a cure but simply a diagnosis of what was ailing their beloved firstborn. For Beata, a Polish immigrant and nurse known for her direct nature, it was yet another challenge to overcome, another medical mystery to unravel.
What would unfold over the next few years was a nightmare even the always-prepared Beata couldn’t possibly predict, a complicated story with a heartbreaking — and wholly unfinished — conclusion that should terrify everyone. First-time feature filmmaker Henry Roosevelt attempts...

If you spend much time around people with disabilities and chronic illnesses, you will hear a lot of horror stories about damaging decisions made by doctors who are fundamentally unable to imagine how different other people’s experiences can be from their own. How much more terrifying that must be when it is not one’s own life and liberty on the line, but that of one’s child. If you have personally struggled with issues of this kind, you’ll find Take Care Of Maya hard to watch, but it is an important watch. For people working in healthcare or child support, it should probably be mandatory.
A Netflix production which premièred at Tribeca 2023, the film tells the story of the Kowalski family, who lived an unassuming life in Venice, Florida, until, in June 2015, nine-year-old Maya began to fall ill. She had suffered from a commonplace respiratory infection but went on.

Netflix gained a new competitor last month (sort of) when HBO Max and Discovery+ combined forces to create the confusingly-named Max. With its list of new releases for June 2023, however, Netflix doesn’t have too much to worry about.
This month is filled with some major Netflix original titles, not the least of which is The Witcher season 3 volume 1 on June 29. Though star Henry Cavill is set to leave the Polish folklore/video game adaptation in season 4, he remains very much entrenched as the titular Witcher in this next go-around. Other big TV hits include Manifest season 4 part 2 (June 2), Big Mouth spinoff Human Resources season 2 (June 9), and animated King Kong series Skull Island (June 22). That’s not even to mention the return of Black Mirror season 6. That still has yet to receive a release date but we have no doubt it will be properly epic once it arrives.

The story of the horrific Idaho student murders is in the works for the page and the small screen. Bestselling author James Patterson and award-winning journalist Vicky Ward are teaming on a nonfiction book about the 2022 murders of the four University of Idaho students. Additionally, Skydance Television intends to option the rights to the book for development as a docuseries, based on Patterson and Ward’s investigation, as part of their first-look deal with Patterson.
The book, which does not yet have a title or release date, will be published by Little Brown and Company. According to the publishing company, in it, Patterson and Ward will give a dramatic account of the November 2022 murders of the four students in the Idaho college town of Moscow and the investigation of suspect Bryan Kohberger.
Patterson and Ward will draw from dozens of exclusive interviews, extensive on-the-ground reporting, copious court transcripts, and also will attend Kohberger’s trial.
