Decent episode
Luisvtw6 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"A Dim Light Amid Despair: Humanity's Comeback: Part 1" is a decent episode but nothing special. We get to know a few new characters.

Recap: After a brutal introduction to their commandant Keith Sadies, the cadets learn of Eren's past and his dreams. Eren later finds difficulty training with ODM gear, though with some motivation from his new friends he is able to overcome his struggle. The commandant later reveals that his belt was somehow broken, and Eren finds no difficulty training with functional gear.

Ok

This episode introduced us to new characters but it feels like they could have shown more stuff for their training then just how they use their gear. Definitely one of the less exciting episodes for sure but one that was needed.

Pretty great episode which lays groudwork

After two thrilling episodes, "A Dim Light Amid Despair" is a change of pace but it serves it's purpose. It's not a filler episode, but more like a transitionary episode for much bigger things to come. It was a super enjoyable episode which focuses on our main characters training and introduces some new characters to the mix. There's some interesting ones which i'd like to see more of. There's not much to write home about as the main focus here is the interactions between the new characters and Eren's story of mastering his gear. I need to mention just how good the sceneries look. The animation just perfectly captures the world. Good stuff but a lesser exciting episode when compared to it's predecessors.

Funniest Episode of the Show
masonbernhardt24 January 2022
This episode is absolutely hilarious. The opening with drill instructor is pure gold and establishes the supporting characters with such ease. Attack on Titan is maybe the most detailed show when it comes to characters and foreshadowing so rewatching from Season 1 for the first time is really something special. With all the craziness that happens later episodes like this really put a smile on your face. Also unbelievable soundtrack/score like always.

Mega start

This episode shows character and strength of the Eren. A little background of his colleagues is definitely well-done. Gets you well hyped for what's next with that swashbuckling equipment.

Warning: Spoilers
The first two episodes were about the titans so it was inevitable that there would be a point where things calm down a bit we are introduced to new characters some more friendly than others as well as the equipment that eren will fight Titans with overall this episode sets up the things to come 7/10.

An Episode that is Improved Due to Later Episodes
Venom597019 January 2022
At the time this episode came out, without knowing what we now know, it probably would've been a solid 8/10 for me. Lays some ground work, introduces characters that will become more important later on and shows us Eren's determination. The highlight of the episode upon revisiting would definitely have to be the conversations between Eren, Reiner and Bertholdt, as they contain a lot of foreshadowing and become quite sad knowing what is to come. And despite Episode 2 having a higher rating, I actually think this is better. Of course it doesn't beat the explosive series opened though.

Incredibly disappointing
chriscallnew7 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
On the one hand, this episode is much better than the rushed and clumsy openers, but on the other hand, it concludes by wiping out all the character development it achieved.

It's just a really awful writing decision to blame Eren's struggles on faulty equipment. He went through a genuine growth arc in this episode. He was finally humanized after being a one note screamer in the first two episodes. It amped up the genuineness of that starting point by having us, as the audience, realize that he is just an immature kid after all with a lot to learn. That made this episode fantastic.

But then it is all erased because he was never actually struggling at all. The faulty belt was to blame and suddenly he's just a perfect one note angry yeller wanting to destroy all titans again. It's a tremendously bad writing decision.

Cardinal Sin
pogcast20 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
To me, this episode commits one of the cardinal sins in any tv show. That being Eren's special abilities on the evaluation machine

Instead of Eren sucking at first but actively trying to get better and the episode showing us that he doesn't back down from a fight or give up and in the end mastering the maching through sheer will and training (which would've been cliche but a billion times better than what we got), he is instead revealed to have been training on a broken machine, which is not only completely underwhelming for his character but makes no sense.

First of all, what is this meant to set up? That Eren is just special cus he's the author's self-insert Mary Sue character? There is no arc to Eren in this episode, he just so happens to be on a bad machine and is actually naturally gifted because even then he could balance on it for a bit. It's stupid and it's pathetic.

Second of all, how did no one notice the machine being broken? There are what, a hundred or more recruits in the army? Even if there are 50 there sure aren't 50 evaluation machines, therefore more people must've been on the machine that Eren was on and what, nobody noticed something wrong with it? Nobody noticed that the recruits on that specific machine just so happened to perform the worst? To me, this episode and the pilot established the show as one that does not care for plotholes and that is extremely underwhelming and definitely not "greatest anime of all time" worthy.

Rewatch, 9.3/10
dcdude-269882 September 2023
This is just another great episode. I feel so hyped now that I am getting close to the fifth episode, because that was in the top three of my favorite episodes that I watched when I first watched this season and the first two episodes of the second one. Anyways, my favorite characters in this episode were Eren, Armin, and Reiner. My favorite things about this episode were the soundtrack/music, the ending, and the pacing. This being a 8.1 star rated episode on this app is just kind of wrong to think about. This is one of the episodes where it is kind of like a pick-up episode for the next one, which it isn't the next one, it's the one after that, but still, they are almost ready to fight the titans.

NEW CHARACTERS!!
dineshkumarfeb-148138 October 2023
This episode is, I think one of the funniest and enjoying episode of aot. This episode not only introdues our main crews and other characters which are very necessary but also begins to show more improvement of eren YAGER the mc. Such a great way to introduce the characters in a great way. Other then the main story, the opening theme of this show ( guren no yumiya by Linked horizon ) is a BANGER, the energetic and hyper yet disturbing vibes that get you exited for upcoming story and insane visuals captures the show soo well. And also the ost composed by hiroyuki sawano are the BEST ( the reluctant heroes ost ).
