Excellent finale, excellent television
everyhopeanycost26 October 2023
Tightly written and well-paced, this episode keeps you constantly engaged, and in successfuly pulling together a conclusion it elevates the entire season. It provides a way to recontextualize some aspects of the entire season, which I found changed my view on things I wished they had done-they didn't do them because they weren't relevant to the story goals being pursued.

As always, the acting is moving and beautiful abd funny in turns, but truly the economy of time demonstrated in the writing, the way all the pieces build together and nothing is extraneous, really stands out as some of the most excellent television I've ever watched.

We need more time for s3!!!
Treacle-A3 November 2023
While it's clear that time and budget restraints effected the pace of storytelling in this second season, there's no disputing the fact that OFMD is a cut above everything else going. The themes are complex, the arcs are many and varied, the tone is comedy + high drama + romance and the format is only 8 X 30 minutes for pity's sake! This is ambitious stuff people!

Emotions are running high as a result of the long wait so reactions to an all too brief S2 are clearly polarised, but the fact is OFMD offers its devoted audience something completely unique, heartfelt and passionate. Let's not forget that as we all rally for a third season.

A beautiful finale to this season
everyatom-4910028 October 2023
The pace of this final episode was quite fast and left me wishing there was more of it in some respects, but the writers also clearly had a plan and made sure to tie up any loose ends so beautifully, the beats were heartfelt and just right. Much like all the other episodes, I can't stop rewatching it and I certainly can't wait to see this show get picked up for a third season.

Everything about OFMD is surpassing the best I've ever hoped for from a tv show - I really didn't think it was possible to get so much excellent representation within such a compelling narrative.

David Jenkins knows how to bring a crew together and I sincerely hope he will get to do so again.

Beautiful finale
babybonnet5 November 2023
There are so many scenes in this episode that feel like something out of romance novels, and that's absolutely great. We've seen countless romances like these for straight characters, but so rarely for queer characters. What a gift this show is to the universe! The earnest way it tells the story of love is almost too much to bear.

The only complaint here really is that they didn't have enough time and resources to tell the story with all the details it would've required or deserved, but that is no fault of David Jenkins nor any of the other creators. They did the absolute best they could with what they were given, and even though this episode has some jagged edges, I find it very comforting that the season does not end in any big cliffhanger.

Despite the finale feeling very... well, final, we all know Ed and Stede's story was never about the "happily ever after". So despite the season ending on a somewhat joyous note that could potentially serve as the ending of the series, it still makes you ask: "But what happens next in their relationship? Where does the crew of The Revenge end up?"

I am very much hoping for a third season, so we can see these characters grow and go on more adventures to discover themselves. Their story is not yet told in full. It's barely begun!

A story for the ages
leyla7s12 December 2023
I've now rewatched season 2 twice and somehow, it gets better and better. This year, Our Flag Means Death has gifted us with so much fun, adventure and especially feelings, and its finale is the right conclusion to it all.

This crew, or family, once more come together in the name of freedom, love and authenticity, and wins. I loved the last battle against the British, although it coming at a bitter cost. The acting is amazing, able to move you and keep you engaged. And it's been great to see the progression of some characters and the closing arcs of others. And the romance, of course, is the soothing balm, especially at the moment of goodbyes.

But here's hoping in a bit more of our pirates! A season 3 would be great, after all the sea is a mysterious creature, who's to say what the tide could bring...

Beautiful, heartbreaking epic finale
penniellington3 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Man, the feels! This episode was at once lovely and heartbreaking. What an ending!

Zheng's ships are blown up by the villainous Ricky, out for revenge after Stede and Co left him in the hands of a pissed off Jackie (his own damn fault).

Ed, now a crap fisherman (for all of one day), gets kicked out of the camp and heads back to town, only to discover everything destroyed. He assumes Stede and Co were all killed by the British Navy. He dons his leathers again and goes on a killing spree to avenge his family. But then he sees Stede and nothing else matters. They are reunited and confess their feelings. It's swoon worthy, y'all.

The crew confronts the soldiers, who have taken over and destroyed Jackie's. They kill them all except Ricky, and don the corpses' clothes, with the thoughts of getting back to the ship.

But Ricky pulls one last betrayal and they barely survive.

Unfortunately, the one they lose is Izzy. But not before he and Ed have a loving, heartfelt goodbye.

It sucks that Izzy's dead. He went from villain to hero in just 8 episodes and I was excited to see where they'd go with this character. New love? A love triangle? He and Wee John? (although he also had moments with Fang, Frenchie and Lucius). So much more story to tell.

Having said that, last season was about the dream of piracy. The adventures and glamor. This season was about the stark reality of it. The brutality and death. So of course we were going to have to lose someone. Other than Ed and Stede, who are endgame, it had to be someone of high stakes. Izzy made the most sense in it's impact on the crew, and with his story coming full circle (redeemed and loved in the end). Others would've had less impact or seemed even crueler (tearing apart Pete and Lucius, for example). So, it sucked, but it also made sense.

Having said that, David is quoted as saying there is no season without Izzy, so if Buttons came become a seagull, Izzy can be a ghost and haunt Stede and Ed.

Even as we cried, we got a lovely gift of Stede and Ed deciding to give up piracy and open a ramshackle inn together (a theme throughout the season, but Ed hinted in S1 as well). They get their "happy" ending, albeit with a lot of work ahead.

We can only get Ghost Izzy and Innkeepers Ed and Stede if we get a S3.

So, please, help www dot renewasacrew dot com.

Loved this season and loved the decision
arianrhod-479597 December 2023
Loved this season. I really understand the witers. David Jenkins made this hard decision with the sad final story. I feel the loss, but i think that was necessary to see the farwell of the Blackbeard part of Edward Teach. It really felt poignant, but that was a perfect close in their past. They together was this big pirate legend. Now Edward is free from this part of him. He can be a better person, and can be closer what he in so in love with. Stede Bonnet is his ideal. And now he finally feel free from his past. I think in a creative way they can continue with this lost caracter. There could be a funny way how he will live on with them. So i liked this sacrifice, but my heart still hurted. I know David Jenkins really loved him too. He was my favourite. But Edward needed this metamorphosis thing. I think this season finale was good. But they and we(viewers) need more screen time, because there was a hurried feeling in the last two episode. That would be the perfect serie if they let them do their job. We need season 3!!! And give them more money and screen time. This is a very good show.

Absolutely stunning season 2 finale
rmpmg2 November 2023
I loved this episode on first viewing, and have loved it only more on the 9 more times (and counting) I've watched it. It loses nothing on repeat viewings - in fact that's something that could be said about the show altogether - I watch from season 1 episode 1 right through to season 2 episode 8 and I immediately want to go back and start again. If any show deserves a third season, it's Our Flag Means Death - it's the perfect, instant classic tv show. Give ALL the awards to everyone involved, in the cast, in the crew, and everyone in between. They've managed to make all these characters live and bresthe.

Beautifully Tragic
mylifeiskindaok9 January 2024
As season 2 came to a close, I think David Jenkins really pulled out all the stops for this one. The cinematography alone is award worthy, the stunt choreography and battle scenes had me speechless (and/or screaming). The costume design was a huge part of this episode and I can't express how amazingly the costume department dressed these characters. This show has always been romantic and tragic, like Romeo and Juliet, and this episode is no different. It's heartbreaking and breathtaking and it wraps up the season while wonderfully setting it up for the next season. I can't wait to see what we get in season 3. I hope there's more like this.

A Disappointing end to a great season
gyyszxrr26 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What a poorly thought out choice to kill off a major fan favourite character (Izzy Hands) before securing a season three, and to do it in such an unspectacular and unnecessary way. His death was so pointless to the story and it would've made much more sense had he lived to run the revenge. He could've said the same stuff to Ed while being incredibly alive. The only saving grace is that Con O'Neill is such a good actor that the scene was still played well. I can only hope that some magic nonsense happens to bring him back because that is the only redemption that could possibly make his death make sense.

Season Two Review
southdavid4 March 2024
After a considerable wait, "Our Flag Means Death" landed on this side of the Atlantic in January of last year. This second season arrived much sooner, but also alongside the news that the series had been cancelled. Though I don't dislike the series I can't say I'm overly disappointed about that cancellation, and I'll explain why.

Having gone their separate ways, Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Edward Teach (Taika Waititi) have reacted differently to their parting. Stede and some of his crew are working for Spanish Jackie (Leslie Jones) but looking for an opportunity to get back to sea for adventure of their own. Blackbeard though is spiralling, and The Revenge is engaging in daily and increasingly dangerous raids. The crew can see that something is wrong, and it falls to Izzy (Con O Neil) to point out the problem.

I said in my review of Season One that I enjoyed the amiable charm but wish it had been funnier and that I hoped the hit rate would increase for he second run. Unfortunately, it doesn't. In fact, this second season is probably even less funny than the first run was. To be clear, by that, I don't mean that it has jokes that fall flat, I mean there is less attempted humour than there was. That's really the only problem. I like the actors, the tone, the performances. It's a sweet relationship at the heart of the show, though one that's rather warped by the violence in their lives.

This second season is inferior in another way, it's lacking a villain like Rory Kinnear was in the first run. Errol Shand is the nearest comparison, but his role is a little different and appears a little less frequently. The series overall MVP though remains Con O'Neil who is hilarious, foreboding and sad as Izzy, who comes to realise what he's done to Blackbeard over the years.

Again, overall, the amiable charm of the series makes me feel positively about it, but it's just not funny enough for me to feel to disappointed that it's not returning.

Incredible season
emilygkane11 November 2023
This season was everything I wanted and more. The acting was truly next level, and the storylines were everything I could have hoped for. I appreciate the writers and crew inserting some of the whimsy and humor into this season, even this very packed and fraught episode. The way the story concluded left viewers wanting more - there is so much more to explore with these characters. I thought that this particular episode really demonstrated this show's heart and the passion the cast and crew have for this world they've created. The call backs to earlier in the season, the music, the development and arc for each character. Just amazing!

Very rushed and careless - it breaks my heart how bad this was
walkfearlessly8 November 2023
I've been debating about whether to post a review of this episode. I adore this show, the characters mean a lot to me, and I would like to see it continue. However, this season finale was deeply disappointing. It made me very sad and upset, and not in the way the show wanted.

Everything after the crew leaves Spanish Jackie's feels extremely forced and rushed. Like the writers were puppeteering the characters into situations that 1) didn't make much narrative sense, and 2) weren't consistent with the show's tonal approach so far. Moments that were supposed to feel hard-hitting and meaningful, felt extremely sudden and unearned. The bigger narrative beats toward the end of this episode, and how they relate to the previous arc of the season, felt like they had not been thought through very much at all.

The audience is supposed to believe the main couple is a healthy romance, and that all their problems and traumas are magically fixed by being together. And - I'm trying not to include spoilers in this review, but - we are also supposed to believe that the crew "loves" Ed and they are his "family," just because we are told so? I adore both Ed and the crew, and they deserve more thoughtful writing than whatever that was.

Other people have posted (here on IMDb and on social media) about the hurtful messages in this episode (what it says about who "deserves" to live and have a happy ending, etc.). Without including spoilers, I will say that what happened in this episode was VERY unkind. Which is the opposite of how the creators have talked up this show for over a year. We've been told that this is a "kind" show, so the end of this episode felt like a huge betrayal. What breaks my heart even more, is that I'm not sure if the writers even realize that - they seem to think this was a sweet and happy ending.

I trusted this show to be better than this, and I was so let down. I'm honestly kind of baffled because the rest of the show is so good. It didn't give much indication that it have such a drastic change in quality.

A spectacular season finale, stellar performances
c-1538429 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is an epic and exciting season finale. Ed and Stede's reunion is incredibly romantic. There is a heartwarming moment where Ed reads one of Stede's messages in a bottle and both voices read the love letter together. This is followed by their beautiful beach reunion, visually paralleling their reunion in Stede's dream in episode one. The music has been chosen perfectly for the scenes and stays with you after watching. Izzy's death is devastating, particularly after his fantastic character development this season, but makes narrative sense and is executed beautifully. His final scene contains wonderful performances by Con O'Neill and Taika Waititi. This entire season has been absolutely incredible and a masterclass of storytelling! I am desperately hoping for a Season 3 renewal soon to see the completion of the intended story!

Brilliant finale for the best show of the year.
madra_rua_6 November 2023
A deeply satisfying finale to an incredible season of television. I've got some criticisms - we spend far too much time on Izzy when the heart of the show has always been the central romance between Ed and Stede, which deserved more time and focus here at the season's end, and the other members of the crew get basically nothing to do - but given Con O'Neill's performance knocks it out of the park as always, it's hard to complain too much. The episode also focuses around a central villain who was clearly meant to be gradually developed over the course of the season, but since there wasn't time to do that, he falls a bit flat; here's hoping season 3 gets at least a full ten episodes and a budget that lets them do things right. Nevertheless, the episode is funny, heartbreaking, incredibly well-acted, and grants satisfying and well-deserved endings to characters you came to care deeply about.

Best Show in a long time!
xoxocaitlinconklin9 January 2024
This finale was so extremely well made! A wonderful end to a wonderful season! Some of the best writing I have ever seen in a tv show and this series has my whole heart.

They had so much they needed to fit in and wrap up in this final episode and they did so with grace and care. You can truly see how much attention and love goes into the story telling of this series.

Being apart of the queer community, this show means so much to me. OFMD has so much queer representation and does an amazing job of making us feel seen and accepted. I am so greatful for this show and for everyone who has helped create it!

Warning: Spoilers
Such a sad but hopeful ending to such a lovely season!

Izzy dying hit me so hard that I was blinded from the beauty of what this season delivered for a while. There's so many stunning episodes that culminate beautifully.

But. Regardless of what this episode has left this season, it feels rushed - because it kind of was! With two less episodes, budget cuts, and far less time to tell the story, it FEELS rushed. This story deserves space to breathe. The show runners and creator deserve to be trusted - because we, the fans at least, know they can deliver.

This story feels, and is, incomplete without season 3. I just love it so much, and it feels like a disservice to the art and hard work put into it not to give it a chance. One more round!

Warning: Spoilers
Episode 8 of 'Our Flag Means Death' from Season 2 is an emotional rollercoaster that leaves an indelible mark on viewers. The episode brilliantly captures the essence of love, loss, and sacrifice, making it a standout installment in the series. The beautiful, poignant moment between Stede and Ed on the beach is an absolute highlight, showcasing the depth of their connection and the courage to embrace their feelings openly. The scene of them running towards each other, encapsulated in their kiss, is incredibly moving and heartwarming, underscoring the power of love amidst adversity.

However, amidst the joy of this heartfelt connection, the episode delivers a devastating blow with Izzy's death. The loss of Izzy, a beloved character, is a gut-wrenching moment that leaves a profound impact. The show's ability to evoke such strong emotions is a testament to its storytelling prowess and the exceptional performances by the cast, particularly the raw emotions conveyed by the actors during this tragic turn of events.

Moreover, the episode's visual aesthetics, coupled with its stirring musical score, elevate the viewing experience, immersing audiences further into the characters' world and intensifying the emotional resonance of each scene.

'Our Flag Means Death' continues to impress with its nuanced storytelling, dynamic character development, and the ability to seamlessly blend humor with poignant moments. Episode 8 stands out as a testament to the show's ability to captivate its audience, leaving us eagerly anticipating what unfolds next while navigating the complexities of love, loss, and the unpredictable nature of life at sea.

incredible season finale
razzapple_15 January 2024
This finale was absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking. It felt so perfectly ofmd, hitting that lovely balance between fun camp vibes and a story that makes you sob violently for months, I loved it.

I've loved seeing the development of all the characters throughout the show and I think this episode shows their progress beautifully. Izzy's journey especially will never fail to make me cry, this ending was so bittersweet.

The final scenes of this episode really drove home that feeling of family and community that this show does so well, providing the most lovely sense of comfort.

This was such an amazing ending to the season, however I do believe it leaves room for another. I don't think either Stede or Ed's character arcs are complete, and with the plot they teased regarding Zheng, I think it's very obvious that this ending is simply breathing room and there's still plenty of story to follow. I truly hope we're able to reverse the cancellation, David Jenkins always intended on writing three seasons and he deserves to tell his story to its finish. OFMD has been such a creative, beautiful, heartbreaking, and overall genuinely phenomenal show. I absolutely love it so much.

beautiful and satisfying end
romyfranz10 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Even though it ends quite sad, i still absolutely loved this episode. I loved how all the characters, Stedes crew, Spanish Jackie and the Swede, Zheng and Stede, and of course Ed came together.

I will never forget how Ed read Stedes letter, both if their soft voices.

The music sequenz was also very good and the costumes really added something.

And of course Izzys death. Of course i was sad about it, but i can see how it fits in the story. And honestly, they are pirates so the danger was always there. It was a symbol of Blackbeard dying. And i loved how he will always be by their side because they put his grave next to their inn.

I liked that Ed isn't a pirate anymore, he got to do it long enough that he deserves to have a slower and domestic life now. And let's face it, they will return to piracy again occasionally. Stede loves it too much and they still want to revenge Izzy. In my interpretation they have their cozy life as inkeepers but every few months they "go on vacation" and sail a bit on the Revenge again, but with Frenchie as a captain now.

Fitting But Not Finished
kshiran-3801619 January 2024
Considering they had their budgets slashed by 40% at the last minute (thanks Zaslav) and had to make fewer episodes, this was brought to a very satisfying place. Like I'm not okay about REDACTED, but I want more. They absolutely need to do more the Zheng because my girl was the admiral of a pirate fleet thank you, and we need to know how things work out at the inn! (That is bound to be a cluster.) And, though it wasn't explicit in s2, I fully expect the polycule to become canon! There was a lot to love here and while this was a good ending for "We don't know if they'll let us have one more season," the story isn't done!

Dramatic end to the season!
theperennialeffect14 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
At the end of season one, I was wishing death upon a certain traitorous character that I couldn't see myself ever rooting for. At the end of season two, I found myself crying over that same character and wishing he could survive. This is the magic of OFMD- a character-driven story that makes it impossible not to care for every single one of these idiots, however terrible their choices may be. While this episode ties up the season's arc in a satisfying way, there is clearly more to come. Spending a whole season building up to a character death is wasted if there is no equally dramatic consequence in the next season!

(Also- the beach reunion? YES!)

Warning: Spoilers
The final episode of Season 2 is perfection. There is suspense, action, love, love, love, tears, joy, and surprises. Without summarizing the plot, there are so many wonderful moments and Act 2 ends with us feeling great while also wanting revenge for some important events that occurred. At the time of this review, MAX has not confirmed a Season 3 sparking the fandom into a frenzy where a campaign to reverse their decision is ongoing. David Jenkins, the creator of the show had envisioned a 3 season story and there are so many questions left unanswered with this finale. Stede and Ed are reunited and in love. There is a wedding, there is a shocking death, and there is a revenge to plot. Zheng wants to team up with Blackbeard and Stede to go after Minor Prince Ricky. The Revenge sets sail under a new captain, Spanish Jackie and Swede have plans to open a new bar, Buttons is still a gull, and Izzy needs to be revenged. WE NEED A SEASON 3 to fully have the story told.

Nice wrap up but more story to tell
kasijackson17 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I loved how this episode provided reconciliation for the characters as they moved through the deciding to be to together portion of their romance, but I am really wanting to see how the creators and cast take the story and the relationship in the anticipated concluding third season. I am especially intrigued by the idea of a story focused on an enduring relationship as the characters settle into the realities of being together and navigate more day to day conflicts (eg someone leaving the dishes in the sink and a big fight that is not really about the dishes). One of the strengths of the show is how it brings tenderness and humor to the mundane!
