Silly, but fun
jenstaria5 August 2018
Clearly some of the previous reviewers weren't paying attention to the time setting wise. It's obvious this musical special is set in the storyline before Shawn's lack of psychic ability is revealed to Juliet, and therefore before Chief Vick is suspended. Please don't count such minor technicalities as a con of the episode in your review as it's not a true negative of the episode itself and only proves you didn't pay attention.

As for the music, background, and entertainment in this special, I was amused and a bit entertained by all of it. It's definitely meant to be viewed as fun, enjoyable, and humorous throughout, up until the very end, and I personally thought the singing and choreography were cute. The stage work and costumes, in terms of appearance and relation to the setting of 19th century London, in the theater weren't bad either.

Classic Psych, with songs

Warning: Spoilers
One of the best episodes. The end of a well rounded character with the resurrection of a character that met their fate by that character was great. I really enjoyed getting to see some of Hill's talent and the willingness of every actor to commit to the musical whether there was great musical talent or not made it fun to watch. I'm a Psych-o and really enjoyed this episode.

The Musical: Silly of course but that is part of the appeal
bob the moo30 March 2014
Between the seventh and eighth seasons of this show, this standalone musical appeared, listed as part of the seventh season although it screened over 6 months after the previous episode and only a few weeks before the start of the eighth and final season. The plot is that a mental patient, who formerly murdered a critic who had savaged his Jack the Ripper musical before it had even opened, has escaped on the eve of the restaging of his work and suddenly bodies are turning up. While the police hunt the man called "Z" with the unlikely help of Yang, Shawn starts to suspect things may not be as simple as they appear. Oh and everyone sings.

Although I think that it has gone a little off the boil in recent seasons, the thing I love about this show is that it does generally have a great sense of humor and doesn't take itself too seriously; this doesn't mean that the cast enjoy making it but the viewer is on the outside looking in, it usually means everyone enjoys it while we have this story to tell at the same time. That is the basis for this musical and although the frequent song and dance numbers limit the usually very funny banter and dialogue, it does fit the show because it breaks out of the restraints of the actual story and instead focuses on being silly and fun and mostly it delivers on this. The musical numbers are generally well staged and everyone throws themselves into it whether they can really do it or not (although the standard is surprisingly high). Within these the lyrics are not as consistently funny as I would have liked but there are some great lines in there and the construction of the songs are clever – a few more in the self-referential style of "I've Heard it Both Ways" riff would have been good.

Around the song and dance the show retains the same silliness in the characters and the dialogue and it is hard to top Shawn's terrible English period accent or the sight of Gus's Jamican Inspector Man ("getting' iry in Scotland Yard"). Perhaps not as funny as the show has been but I enjoyed that the Musical special seemed like a chance to relax a little and just enjoy the show. The return of Yang and the plot around her seemed like an odd device but at least it allowed some dramatic moments to be delivered (tidied up) without dragging the show into more serious territory as it could have done if it was delivered "straight". Roday and Hill are both great, with Hill in particular showing his song and dance skills. Lawson is a bit out of it while Omundson is funny throughout. Rapp, Bostwick, Chelsom, Fuller and others all give good support, while Sheedy is decent but a bit of a device – nice to see Simpson turn up briefly too.

Psych The Musical may be silly and throwaway but fans should enjoy this since this is what has driven the show for so many seasons. It may not be as consistently funny as I would have liked but it still is very entertaining with lots of good ideas and funny moments. I was a little disappointed with the previous season of this show so I hope that the fun and energy in this special can carry across into the final season.

Hilarious (if you like psych's style)
mmallek3 April 2019
If younlike psych or it's ridiculous style then this is the best. Anyome giving it lower simply does not appreciatr this style. The creators are not going for a traditional style musical and that goes for the entire show. I can't stop singing "santa barbara skies". They did a great job of incorporating everything this show is about. Just seeing dule hill sing and dance that much is worth it alone.

Loved it!

Love the two part episode. The cast was stellar, the production was campy and delightful. Thanks for the entertainment.. Seeing the characters in these unexpected roles was just plain fun. The characters are just cool. Very talented crew. Just watch it when you get an opportunity. The guest stars, e sable cast, campy scripts make this a fun experience. I'm sad that like other Hallmark shows, was discontinued and so they now they just show regular re-runs. This will give those who never saw the original series and movies a new opportunity and for the rest of us, let the good times roll...yet again. Sorry they required such a long review.

Miss the gang and will look to watch again when it's on again.

If you love Shawn and Gus... And musicals
mamallamag14 May 2020
You will love this episode. It is still an excellent plot and they have to catch a bad. They make fun of themselves and make lots of musical references. What's not to like? And if you have seen Galavant, know that Lassie is going to join them in the singing and dancing.

one of the best tv musical episodes i have ever seen
sarahmorghanz10 January 2022
Okay so i have seen A LOT of shows attempt to make a musical episode and 9 times out of 10 they are mediocre at best but psych literally shot it out of the park. The only musical episode i have seen to consistently keep me entertained and laughing 90% of the time. Absolutely incredible.

I love Psych but I hated this
cdhkah5 June 2020
I am watching Psych on Amazon Prime and have enjoyed the wit, twists and turns but this was poor. It was out of sequence to the rest of the season which was quite confusing. The songs got in the way of a marginally interesting story. I hope that Season 8 gets back to normal.

Psych The Musical
graciemay20115620 December 2013
Psych The Musical was a perfect way to get ready to say goodbye to their fans of 8 years. It contains a lot of humor just like a normal episode with singing and dancing. The characters can sing and dance. There were a few people who came back that I am sure we all missed dearly. I have to give props to the show creator Steve Franks for creating this AMAZING show and creating this episode, I am positive that us Psych-Os appreciate it. In my opinion, I don't think Psych should end. It is an awesome show and has so many great fans who don't want it to end. I love how all of these people known as the cast come together everyday to make a great show. James Roday (Shawn Spencer) and Timothy Omundson (Carlton Lassiter) have this moment in the episode that is so funny you will want to watch it over and over again. If you have a twitter be sure to thank Steve Franks for creating such a show like Psych and be sure to thank all of the cast members. I am sure that they will love it.

Can't stand musicals made out of TV shows
simongeorge-529531 April 2022
I truly hate when they decide to make a musical out of a TV show. They all sound ridiculous, they're boring, uninteresting, the story suffers horribly and it's a total waste of time.

Best Modern Muscial
lewisstevens124 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Its a great musical that does not "Redo Old Songs", I like that they have built a whole great storyline with awesome music composition which is just enhanced with "Officer Ham and Eggs". Its all original music that really was built into the story rather than being randomly placed where they feel. We do actually get to see a bit of Gus's Tap skills and love the part where he slides down the stairs backwards!

Sean's witty charm really does show and makes you wish you had a best friend like him!

I would love to see another musical at a later date and hope Psych never finishes, from the beauty of Juliet to Seans witty charm which is only enhanced by the friendship of Gus.

It is a series - where no matter how old you are, would be great addition to your collection and have some laughs!

The actors do show good amounts of genuine talent in this episode. I am truly sorry to say the whole episode deserves an E for Effort.

Psych: The Musical non-canon
kmax-141381 December 2023
I believe that the musical isn't canon and is just a made up story told by Shawn and Gus, because that's what Z said. If the hanging scene never actually happened then Yang's death didn't happen either. However, her remains are still seen at the end, which leads me to believe that she could've died while locked up in prison and Shawn heard about it when he got to that place where Z was institutionalized. He probably saw her body there and decided to cremate her and pour her ashes into a jar. Like I don't want to believe any of this is true as the Yin/Yang situatio ended at the end of Season 5.

Worst Psych Episode
livingstonjc18 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This was the most painful Psych episode to watch ever and possibly the worst TV show I have ever watched. I watched the episode to conclusion as my wife and I had previously watched all other episodes together as one of the few shows we enjoyed together. The musical setup did not work: both from a plot and quality perspective. We were both literally groaning when new musical numbers started.

The biggest issues with this episode are: 1) Music quality was not very good (or horrible); 2) The use of music is random and inconsistent with the plot progression. Does Lassie hate the singing as he professes in the story or like it as he is later the instigator? 3) Chief Vic was suspended in the previous episode but is miraculously back on the job this episode with no explanation; 4) Juliet does not know Shawn is not psychic in this episode even though the entire Season 7 to that point was about her discovery and later acceptance of that fact; 5) This episode is by far the poorest use of the Yang character in the entire show; it kind of ruins the previous development of the character; and 6) The framing of the episode around Shawn narrating a medieval story is completely unnecessary and poorly done.

Staggeringly bad episode
chengiz24 May 2015
Terrible musical numbers. Who wrote them? They should not be allowed near a writing device again. Complete lack of continuity (chief de-suspended? Juliet forgot Shawn isn't a psychic?). What was the point of the fairy tale book thing? Is this a fairy tale or a musical? Yang has always been annoying but this scaled new depths. The actor playing Shawn's ego scaled fresh heights: is he attempting to jumpstart a singing career or something? The plot was nonsensical. And pretty much the only funny thing in the entire two hour long episode was Gus singing Jamaican at the end. This episode was like watching an Ed Wood movie.

The musical is the worst part of the entire series
bhaff-210544 February 2023
Love Psych with a passion. It is one of my all time favorites and comfort shows that i rewatch constantly. I have seen every episode more times than i can count with one exception... the musical. Saw it once and barely made it through. Just does not fit the show at all. If i wanted to see singing and dancing i would watch glee or high school musical or some corny nonsense like that. It just feels so forced and out of place for this show.

For me personally, i do not enjoy musical episodes of tv shows. They just scream of the actors/writers trying to impress us all with their range of talents that none of us asked to see. Thats not why im watching Psych. Thats what the theatre is for. This is a tv show about crime/mysteries. The musical just seems so out of place. Its an automatic skip on rewatches for me.

Brave but missed
jrodway14 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
With a show that was well written, took chances and never took itself seriously the idea of a musical - original music at that - oddly made sense. Unfortunately this is a complete miss. If you are going to be this ambitious you better hit the mark.

The episode is extended which is too bad. The story drags and loses direction more often than not. It tries to reference other episodes and brings in former characters - weakly Yang and smartly Mary Lightly - with varying degrees of success. Mostly it's just boring.

Honestly the highlight is Henry tell Shawn early, "Yeah, not happening" and then smartly disappearing for the majority of the episode.

The three stars given to Psych the Musical are only for having the courage to take a chance. Even the biggest Psych fans - which I consider myself one - would be well advised to skip this episode.

The Musical - Clear sign of "NO IDEAS"
Man-Behind-The-Pen17 December 2017
When any series has a "Musical Style" episode it means that the creators have NO IDEAS and they run with the crappiest idea ever, besides asinine "Fart" and "Poop" jokes, which you can see when they have no comedic ideas in comedy movies.

It is obvious that the show is going down hill and it is a very good show. This final season 7 episode indicates that the Season 8 will be peace of cow dung with no imagination.
