With Florida governor and expected Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis making headlines for rejecting an Advanced Placement course on African American Studies, Hulu’s six-part docuseries “The 1619 Project” couldn’t be better timed. What started as an initiative from The New York Times reassessing slavery’s lingering impact on our nation even in the 21st century sparked a conservative backlash, making top journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones both a star and a target in the process. In some ways, that backlash has only fueled “The 1619 Project’s” momentum, which already includes a bestselling book and now this Oprah Winfrey-produced docuseries on Hulu.
Taking a departure from the initial project, which leans more heavily on the past (which has been a contentious point even with some historians), this docuseries, steered by Oscar-winning director Roger Ross Williams (“Music By Prudence”), producer Shoshanna Guy, and Hannah-Jones (a MacArthur genius who is also...

After working on docu-series at CNN this year, Robert Redford is moving to scripted television with "Homeland" producer Alex Cary. At Sunday's Produced By conference held by the PGA, Cary told the crowd he was working on a TV adaptation of "Brubaker," Redford's 1980 film, with the iconic actor and filmmaker. The original film told the story of a new warden who pretends to be a convict in order to expose corruption at his prison. Directed by Stuart Rosenberg, "Brubaker" starred Redford and Morgan Freeman, earning an Oscar nod for screenwriters W.D. Richter and Arthur A. Ross. Redford has executive-produced many documentaries, including the 2014 CNN series "Chicagoland" and "Death Row Stories," but "Brubaker" would mark his first scripted series. It also marks yet another movie adaptation for television, following the success stories of "Fargo," "About a Boy," "Hannibal," "Parenthood," "Friday Night Lights," and many others. The trend is growing and the power players of film.

Scandal cast member Columbus Short has driven gossip headlines in the past several weeks with personal problems (often including accusations of violent behavior). Now he won’t return for Scandal‘s fourth season. I guess that answers that cliffhanger.
Disney is planning a sequel for the cheesy fun of Teen Beach Movie. The original was a hit not only in terms of TV ratings but also sold plenty of copies of the soundtrack.
More Garrett Clayton on TV. Nothing to complain about.
The credibility of the CNN reality series Chicagoland, which claimed to document the real-life challenges faced by the city of Chicago, was challenged by a report in the Chicago Tribune. According to e-mails obtained by the Tribune, producers coordinated with Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to coordinate storylines, plan shots and pick subjects who would be featured in the series. Looks like a deep-dish double whammy today for CNN’s Chicagoland. First the 8-part docu series produced by Robert Redford‘s Sundance Productions got caught in a media hailstorm for being too chummy with one of its main subjects, Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Now the ratings are in for last night’s finale, and it ain’t pretty. Featuring an appearance from Windy City native Michelle Obama, the cable news series from filmmakers Marc Levin and Mark Benjamin drew 325,000 total viewers — a series low — and 132,000 adults 25-54 in its 10 Pm slot. Those numbers are well behind the 1.22 million total viewers and 244,000 in the demo that Fox News Channel‘s Sean Hannity drew in the time slot and behind the 648,000 total viewers and 202,000 25-54s that MSNBC’s Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell pulled in. Another day, another media story on the fudging of “reality” and “documentary” for the TV camera – this time it’s CNN’s eight-part series Chicagoland, which never got so much media interest as it did this morning when the Chicago Tribune posted a report on emails between the office of that city’s mayor Rahm Emanuel, and the producers. The emails show Emanuel’s office closely controlled access to their guy, that the producers cajoled his office to get shots they wanted, and a good time was had by all. In the world of politics, and the world of television, this is known as “how it works.” Related: CNN’s ‘Chicagoland’ Finale Hits Viewer Low “If it seems as though some scenes of CNN’s documentary series Chicagoland were coordinated by Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s City Hall and the show’s producers, that’s because they were,” the Trib scolded in the report,...

An open records request that revealed more than 700 emails between the producers of CNN's Chicagoland series and the office of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel showcase a cozy relationship. On Friday, the Chicago Tribune published a report detailing those close ties while CNN issued a statement denying that the Chicago mayor's office had "editorial control" over the content of the series. "[E]mails reviewed by the Tribune reveal that the production team worked hand in hand with the mayor's advisers to develop storylines, arrange specific camera shots and review news releases officially announcing the show," the newspaper wrote. Anthony Bourdain has traveled to all sorts of exotic places over the past couple of years, with none as important as where he’s taken CNN itself.
Bourdain’s Parts Unknown series, a culinary travelogue, swiftly became the network’s top-rated series since debuting last April, a bright spot at a place that was in a severe dry spell before the missing Malaysian plane kicked up ratings. A new eight-episode season begins Sunday at 9 p.m. Edt.
Bourdain explains his team’s strategy with typical coarseness: “We are constantly asking ourselves, first and foremost, what is the most up thing we can do next week?...

Update, 4:30 Pm: Unlike entertainment programming, the world of cable news is not one where Live + 3 numbers often have any relevance. You don’t often think of DVRs as how audiences watch CNN, Fox News or MSNBC but with some of the non-breaking news programming that Jeff Zucker has instituted since taking over CNN last year that may be changing. For instance, if its debut is any indication, CNN’s new Chicagoland docu series has a digital afterlife looks almost as far reaching as Lake Michigan on a clear day. In Live + 3 numbers the Robert Redford produced series saw its March 6 debut rise 23% in the adults 25-54 demo to 280,000 viewers. That moves the CNN show up to No. #1 in the news demo for its 10 Pm time slot. Previously, Chicagoland had been in second place with 227,000 viewers among the 25-54s behind Fox News’ Hannity (247,000) and ahead of MSNBC’s Last...

CNN's new eight-part docuseries “Chicagoland,” debuting Thursday, will be a lot more impressive if you've never seen “Brick City.” The filmmakers behind that masterful Sundance Channel series, Marc Levin and Mark Benjamin, have joined with Robert Redford on “Chicagoland,” which explores the problems facing America's third-largest city. In “Brick City,” the blueprint for the new show, Levin and Benjamin dissected Newark, N.J., a once-hopeless place that has made real improvements since “Brick City” first aired in 2009. "They pull a knife? You pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital? You send one of his to the morgue. That's the Chicago way." The famous quote from "The Untouchables," Brain De Palma's Academy Award-winning film set during Al Capone's 1930s heyday, still hovers over a city whose history is awash with gang violence. In "Chicagoland," CNN's new eight-part original series from "Brick City" producers Marc Levin and Mark Benjamin premiering tonight, March 6th, at 9pm, that 80+ year old mentality still rings frighteningly true. But "Chicagoland" isn't just focused on gangs: the series, which is executive produced by Robert Redford and Laura Michalchyshyn of Sundance Productions, strives to show how gangs affect crime, crime affects schools, schools affect policy and policy changes lives in America's third largest city. The first episode focuses on the 2013 battle between Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Teacher's Union over the impending closure of 54 schools.

Like Chicago, CNN has been in need of a change of pace. But whereas Chicago's issues include budget deficits and gang violence, CNN's are more about failed celebrity partnerships, and ratings too dependent on the vagaries of the news cycle. CNN has made an interesting change recently though, by backing provocative documentary films such as Blackfish, and now, partnering with Robert Redford's Sundance Productions for an eight-episode documentary series, Chicagoland. Though cursory mention is given to Chicago's more positive and well-known attributes (the birth of the blues, the Blackhawks' 2013 Stanley Cup win, the rich history of its
