Read More: Meet the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival Filmmakers Director Andrew Renzi is a two-time Sundance shorts veteran and a Tribeca alumni, having premiered his documentary "Fishtail" at last year's festival. In his Tribeca return, Renzi has assembled a very promising cast headed by Richard Gere, who plays an aging hedonistic man ingratiating himself into the lives of a newlywed couple, played by Dakota Fanning and Theo James. Renzi has described the film as "part 'Scent of a Woman,' part 'Leaving Las Vegas,' part 'Cable Guy.'" Needless to say, we're intrigued. What's your film about in 140 characters or less?Franny "Francis" Watts is rich, he's handsome, and he's single, so what's the problem? The problem is he's sixty, and he’s not sure what he has to show for it. When Franny unwittingly causes the deaths of his two best friends, his entire sense of self crumbles.

Moving from producer hat-wearing days (Afterschool, Two Gates of Sleep) to firmly stippling Park City with a metaphysical, deeply humane and serene portraits The Fort (2012) and Karaoke! (2013), Andrew Renzi saddled into feature filmmaking earlier this year with dual projects, the birth of Fishtail, the docu 16mm set in Montana and narrated by Harry Dean Stanton was the first to push out (’14 Tribeca/ Karlovy Vary), while his narrative feature debut appears to be close to going into labor. Production on the 2013 January Screenwriters Lab Franny began last October, with Richard Gere, Dakota Fanning and Theo James balancing on a tightrope act. On the tech side we find cinematographer Joe Anderson (Simon Killer), plus a Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans signed score (Enemy).
Gist: Gere will play a fun-loving, hedonistic philanthropist who works his way into the lives of a newlywed couple (Dakota Fanning, Theo James) to recapture the life he once had.

After serving as a producer on films including Afterschool and Two Gates Of Sleep and directing three shorts, Andrew Renzi is transitioning to directing features with not one but two films in 2014. First up is Fishtail, a portrait of life on a Wyoming cattle farm shot in a mere four days. Speed doesn’t mean sloppy haste: Fishtail makes full use of its 16mm widescreen frame, carefully capturing agricultural processes that connect the present to the old American West. Later this year, expect Renzi’s Richard Gere-starring drama Franny; his documentary premiered yesterday at the Tribeca Film Festival. In an email […]...

Ranching is a profession that outside of industrial operations, is a fading one, with fewer and fewer making a living at it. But filmmaker Andrew Renzi takes a unique look at the last of a dying breed with his art film/documentary "Fishtail," premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival. Narrated and featuring songs by Harry Dean Stanton, the movie chronicles the life of two cowboys living on a 2,000-acre ranch in Montana, as they work during calving season, the month when the cows on the ranch give birth, mirroring the life-cycle of the cattle with that of the modern cowboys and their families. And you can see Renzi's unique aesthetic approach in this exclusive trailer, one that treats the subject matter visually as something out of time, and not quite of this world. It's pretty beautiful stuff. "Fishtail" premieres on Thursday, April 17th at 9:45pm at Bow Tie Cinemas 8. Watch below.

For anyone who's ever longed for a simpler life in the wilderness, Andrew Renzi's astute documentary "Fishtail" should make for the perfect viewing. The director sheds new light on life in the American West that many have come to glorify, while capturing the very beauty that makes such glorification justifiable -- with only an impressive four days' worth of footage. Tell us about yourself. My name is Andrew Renzi, I'm a filmmaker that lives in New York City that recently made a documentary called "Fishtail." The film observes Tylee Abbott, an art dealer who specializes in Classic Western American Art, while he works on his Montana ranch during calving season, the month when the cows give birth. What was your biggest challenge in completing this project? We shot the entire documentary in four days on 16mm film, so not only were we constantly running out of time, but we...
