An admittedly silly but bloody refreshing, fun start for a horror comedy on television
choorydanny23 September 2015
Being a huge fan of comedies poking fun of the genre clichés of horror (no, not the Scary Movie franchise, but Evil Dead 2 and The Cabin in the Woods), I had relatively high expectations of Scream Queens.

However the morbid humor, the ensemble cast and the consciously hilarious cliché twists of this pilot grabbed my attention right in the start with its over-the-top storytelling. Its extravagantly juvenile character development is so well-approached in writing that it succeeds to amaze me and invest in these characters. Scream Queens seizes the formula of enjoyable, silly TV programming, moreover makes the viewer want more of it as the narrative progresses.

The pilot to Scream Queens knows what it is and remains frank to itself by exploiting its predecessors and by never wanting to be more. The show is a earthly hug for those fans of the horror genre who know exactly what to expect from a teen slasher flick.

It was okay

I had a lot of high expectations for this series due to the talent in front of the camera and positive word of mouth. It wasn't the worst think I've ever seen but a lot of the humor doesn't work and they don't focus enough on the horror.

"Scream Queens is Dangerous"

Warning: Spoilers
Chanel Oberlin finally comes to screens of Fox.

This "Scream Queens" Review contains spoilers. If you have not seen "Pilot" episode, please, do not read, this will would destroy it

After an intense promotion and long wait, the series more expected autumn has come with an extensive but satisfactory premiere of two hours.

Inspired by the films of Wes Craven "Scream", "Scream Queens" takes the primary idea of his films and it plays with too many items that end up forming a pleasant spectacle. "SC" follows to the queens of one sisterhood called "Kappa Kappa Tau", in which, after a dark and wicked past a killer with red mask returns to take revenge from each and every one of them. Despite its cliché start story, the series plays with a well managed black humor, a very well planned script and a cast of first class that gives it a degree of height and professionalism.

First Factor to consider it excellent: The highly qualified technical and creative team behind series like "American Horror Story" - "American Crime Story" – "Glee" are Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan and this time, They return loaded with a powerful mind, What fear!. While not handled the same thematic teenager "Glee", Murphy and Falchuk deviate from that path to concentrate on their major taste, horror.

Second Factor to consider it more excellent: I think that at first sight, there are many familiar aspects of the series with respect to its competitor "AHS", however, it is notable that this time has a much more relaxed and fresh air. 1995, the sisterhood "Kappa Kappa Tau" has a party, tonight, all they drink, all they dance, all they shout. Amy Meyer appears saying "Something really bad happened... This is not my blood". She immediately leads to her false friends Bethany, Coco and Mandy to a bathroom where Sophia is bleeding. When they arrive to look to her friend and run away to dance "Waterfalls" of FTA in the party. Minutes later, when they return, Sophia is completely dead and the baby is in the hands of Amy. "Scream Queens" has begun.

Third Factor to consider it more, more excellent: The characters of the series so far are fun, unique and very special. Grace Gardner (Skyler Samuels) is the apparent heroine of the series into the sisterhood, while Chanel Oberlin is the main bitch (obvious). In the cast also participate in beautiful Chanel's minions, subsequently, new members of the brotherhood, in which I'm already pointing to a possible killer. Chanel #2 (Ariana Grande) is a fashion diva who unfortunately dies. I must confess, the best part of the pilot was the funny scene of the death of the girl, before dying a tweet more. Sadie Swenson, Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd) is my favorite Chanel, quiet, unique, special, simple, complex, mystical, mysterious, beautiful, shocking, disturbing, etc. Ryan's characters are my addiction. Libby Putney, Chanel #5 (Abigail Breslin) is one of the victims and victimizers of Chanel, her nobility and her beautiful physique makes that they ignore it. At the other end, in the brotherhood is the ex-boyfriend of Chanel, Chad Radwell (Glen Powell), I have to clarify, he also has his own group of minions, led by Boone Clemens (Nick Jonas).

Murphy, Falchuk and Brennan are secure with the cast they have chosen. Each and every one of the interesting characters shine with their own light as soon as the camera focuses them, some sweets, other unpleasant but all with a special touch, clear indication of a good omen for the series. No matter the personality, even Chanel (Emma Roberts) may be the Red Devil, and even though one of them will die, suspicions are still firm on them.

Emma and Jamie Lee Curtis as Dean of Wallace University Cathy Munsch seem to be the face of the show, but behind these two scream queens, there are very fundamental personalities in the plot as Lea Michele as Hester (one of my suspect, perhaps by her clear addiction with death, on purpose; the scene when she plan to as disappearing to Chanel #2 is fabulous) , Nasim Pedrad as Gigi Caldwell (another of my suspicious), Keke Palmer as Zayday Williams and many more good characters.

"Scream Queens" falls in the middle of three genres, using all at the same time. The series isn't infused with horror pure as "ASH", but in its essence this genre has weight. Neither undertakes to discuss youth problems such as "Glee", the series only presents them in a comic way but until there comes, next to the horror, the genre most predominantly in the show is clearly the comedy, a little black, but different, refreshing, innovative and suitable for the theme of the show that gives it its own signature.

Ryan Murphy is reborn with a new, disturbing, commented and successful project, where weekly, the case of the red killer will have tracks. According to the pilot, the series has too much future and lays the bases for more TV shows like this. With a spectacular rider, with one surprise thematic, a tone dark but intelligent, an excellent plot, a sensational cast and a renewal of the genre of horror and comedy, FOX aims to keep to the public for 13 episodes and be a true success. Stupid but intelligent, clear but dark, comic but dramatic, Ryan knows very well to mix things. For now, "Hell Week" awaits us with open arms.

Very entertaining with minor errors

Warning: Spoilers
This was a great first episode, featuring fantastic acting from both Jamie Lee Curtis and Emma Roberts who were both a pure delight to watch. It appears that these two will thrive on the show and help keep it going in response to some elements that general viewers seem displeased with. The opening scene was very odd and it immediately had me wary of the show. However, this proved to be wrong as the episode presented some amazing gore and witty dialogue, as well as some simple laughs. I also appreciated how Skyler Samuels' character did not fit the typical 'shy' heroine. This contributes to the shows concept of being a parody to the horror genre, whilst honoring and paying homage to it at the same time. The campy and funky feel actually works well. From the "box muncher" joke to the girls' reactions to the deaths, this show reflected some great humor. Some of it may be racist or a bit stale, but when Roberts or Curtis are delivering it the execution is successful. I am reminded of Madison Montgomery which is a good sign. While there are many fluent elements, some fall short. Firstly, the show feels a little too predictable considering it is largely a mystery/Scream film type story which was indicated by the Maid's death. Also some of the flat humor may be irritating for some as it tends to be overused or dragged out, like Ariana Grande's death scene. I'm looking forward to the development of the Red Devil killer and if handled correctly, then viewers can be assured that this will make for an exciting mystery. These are some elements that need to be tweaked in order to flow appropriately with the shows successful elements such as Roberts and Curtis. Overall, Scream Queens "Pilot" was very entertaining first episode that has set up the rest of the season well.

Terrible
Ayyylmao21 September 2015
Scream queens kicks off September 22nd with a long dragged out two hour premiere. I'm a huge Ryan Murphy fan and I think his style of directing is beautiful and that is shown in scream queens with the beautiful and grand sets and the groundbreaking cinematography. Other than that there is nothing else to Scream Queens. My first problem is the writing. For this show is uninspired and unfunny. The characters are extremely rude and their rudeness is meant to be funny but it's not. The show seems like it was written by middle school girls. The acting is meh. Jamie lee Curtis is great as always but the younger cast is stale. It's clear that some people were added for views and not for quality.... *cough* Ariana *cough* Then we get to the biggest problem. This show is meant to be a horror comedy but it's not either of them. It's not funny and the jokes are not clever at all. The horror isn't there and it's way too silly to be a horror show. Overall, Scream Queens is a missed shot by Ryan Murphy as he tries to recreate the atmosphere he had in his hit American Horror Story: Coven.

Bad writing, but some funny moments.
thejesscen23 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Hmm. So, about 1/4 or less of the jokes are actually funny. The rest are just either racist or offensive in other ways. But a lot of it is childish and stupid. For instance, the deaf girl who keeps asking for everyone to speak up. Or a British fuckboy -- sorry frat boy -- wanting to get "pissed" getting yelled at by an American frat boy about wanting to get "drunk" and not wanting his bad attitude. I knew this show was meant to be campy and fun, but the writing takes it to a ridiculously unfunny level. I quickly remembered that Ryan Murphy wrote this because his sarcastic comedy writing is so specific that most of the characters sound like Sue Sylvester. However, there are some comedic parts worth noting. Like a particular moment involving glass cutting. And the first major death scene involving the use of cell phones and Twitter that left me laughing through the commercial break. The only character at this point I find truly genuine is Niecy Nash's not-qualified-to-carry-a-gun security guard Denise Hempville. She doesn't rely on the writing to be funny. She's just naturally funny, which is what this show lacks. I have to give props to Lea Michelle as Hester "Backbrace" Ulrich because she is reeeeeally trying. And, of course Ariana Grande is just a pro at everything she does. All in all, this isn't a very good show, but at least it's the type of murder mystery where it doesn't really matter who the killer is. The writing makes sure you forget it's a murder mystery cause you're trying to figure out how people actually think most of these jokes are funny. P.S. Was that Best Buy parking lot line a reference to the Adnan Syed case featured on Sarah Koenig's Serial? And was I the only one who caught it?
