The first clear sign that there’s something unusual about Ma, the debut feature from Celia Rowlson-Hall, occurs just a few minutes in. A young woman (Rowlson-Hall)—she’s never named, but the credits call her Ma—steps out of the desert and onto a lonely highway, standing right in the middle of the road. Soon, a young man (Andrew Pastides), called Daniel in the credits, drives up in an Oldsmobile and stops in front of her. Ma climbs onto the hood of Daniel’s car, stretching out as if it were a king-size bed, and taps gently on the windshield, whereupon he drives to a motel, with Ma splayed across his hood the entire way. It looks like an absurdist joke, but the entire movie, it turns out, consists of unconventional motion. Rowlson-Hall was trained as a choreographer, and Ma is her attempt to make something roughly midway between...

While this year's AFI Fest boasted high profile titles like "The Big Short" and "Concussion," there was one much smaller movie that really captured our attention: Celia Rowlson-Hall's "Ma." Indeed, it captured moviegoers there too, with director Celia Rowlson-Hall taking the Breakthrough Audience Award prize. And while the movie doesn't seem to have picked up U.S. distribution just yet, a terrific trailer has landed to give a taste. Those in the know (his following might have discovered him via his pair of novels in The Blue Bourbon Orchestra and Saguaro) appreciate his off the beaten track humor and array of trippy characters and their limitless inscribed legends. The fanfare has steadily grown in Park City with trio of animated short films in Bobby Bird: The Devil in Denim (2007), Chonto (2008), Field Notes from Dimension X : Oasis (2009). The 2015 edition of AFI Fest wraps up tonight with the gala premiere of The Big Short. But before things get swept up at Hollywood & Highland, the festival has announced its Jury and Audience Awards for this year's fest. The features jury is charged with giving prizes to films in the "New Auteurs" section. The panel gave their top Grand Jury Award to César Augusto Acevedo's Colombian tale Land and Shade. They also gave a special mention for directing to Alice Wincour's Disorder and special mention for screenplay to writer/director Lorenzo Vigas's Desde Allá. Feature Audience Awards were given for four programs. The 5th edition of the Us in Progress co-production forum was held on October 22-23, 2015, during the 6 th American Film Festival in Wrocław. Director Shaz Bennett and producers Melanie Miller and Diane Becker acquired the most awards and therefore emerged as Us in Progress winners for "Alaska is a Drag".
Us in Progress is an industry event that aims to strengthen the trans-Atlantic film industry collaborations and partnerships and help European film professionals establish working relationships with new emerging American filmmakers. The event is a bi-annual program conducted at the Champs-Elysées Film Festival in Paris during the summer before kicking-off in Wroclaw at Aff during the fall.
At the 6th American Film Festival, six films in various stages of post-production have conducted private screenings for film industry professionals, including Laurent Danielou (Loco Films), Mathieu Delaunay (Memento Films), Oda Schaeffer (k5), Silje Grimsdal (Trust Nordisk), and festival programmers from Edinburgh, Locarno, Tribeca, and a jury composed of yours truly, Sydney Levine, and Polish post-producers, to compete for post-production and promotional packages. In addition to the filmmaking duo, Shaz Bennett and Melanie Miller, two films have earned significant post-production awards - "Actor Martinez" by Nathan Silver and Mike Ott and "The Loner" by Daniel Y-Li Grove.

The American Film Institute announced today the films that will screen in the World Cinema, Breakthrough, Midnight, Shorts and Cinema’s Legacy programs at AFI Fest 2015 presented by Audi.
