Kryten experiences a midlife crisis
Tweekums17 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
For some reason Kryten is no longer finding satisfaction in the menial tasks that he enjoyed most and feels that he has achieved nothing; Lister surmises that he must be going through a midlife crisis; this is confirmed when he changes his standard grey body for a sporty new red one. To make Kryten feel better about himself the crew search out another mechanoid, an earlier model, so he can see just how much he has developed. The find one, named Butler, but when they get to him it doesn't help Kryten at all; since his crew died Butler has mastered fine arts, classical music and fine cuisine as well as a variety of other skills; Kryten feels more useless than ever… until a repair carried out by Butler threatens to kill everybody! This at least gives him a chance to feel superior.

This was another fun episode; Kryten's new look was amusingly ridiculous without being too different, apart from headgear that seemed to be based on a car's spoiler. Given how the cast have aged over the lifetime of the series it seemed perfectly natural that there would be an episode where one of them experienced a midlife crisis and it is amusing to make that one Kryten as he has always had a few neuroses. Robert Llewellyn does a fine job in the role so it was nice to see him take centre stage; I like the fact that this season seems to be giving each character a chance to lead a story. Guest star Dominic Coleman impressed as Butler; a fun one-off character who was clearly superior to the Red Dwarf crew. As one would hope for there are plenty of good laughs as well as a fun story.

A somewhat strange episode that focuses on Kryten's new look, not too far off from a red Ferrari. In short he is having a mid life crisis now that he is half a million years old or so. Where have all the years gone and he has accomplished so little, although his primary function seems to have been to serve and these days serve Lister and Cat.

Lister realises that Kryten could do with meeting up with another mechanoid and arranges to meet up with Butler who turns out to be a polymath and skilled at everything bringing even more despair to Kryten.

Dominic Coleman has fun with Butler (he reminded me a lot of the first actor who played Kryten when he was first introduced.) So good is Butler that Rimmer wants him as part of the Red Dwarf crew.

A decent episode with some laughs mainly by Cat and with some sci fi added at the end as the crew encounter the actual universe thanks to the modifications made by Butler.

Some inspired moments but largely a one joke episode

Kryten has a mid-life crisis.

This is a reasonably enjoyable episode that I found contained an interesting theme and one clever concept but the humour mostly didn't work for me.

The plot is a very simple focus on Kryten examining his life and having a crisis which is quite amusing with lots of recognisable moments for anyone who has gone through this type of psychological state or witnessed someone going through it. My favourite bit comes near the end where the plot, in a comical way, connects to the entire universe.

Generally I found the comedy in this one to be mildly amusing throughout with a strong finish. It is largely a one joke episode but it depends on your own sense of humour as to how much you enjoy it.

All performances are solid with Robert Llewelyn on good form at centre stage.

Warning: Spoilers
There are some really good jokes in this one esspecially near the end, that's what in my view helped this episode to, at least for me, cross from being a 8 to a 9.
