Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be heading into production on Scream 7 soon – but that project has turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop is moving forward first, and we’ve previously heard that it’s set to star Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus season 2), Violett Beane (The Flash), Brandon Sklenar (1923), and newcomer Jacob Robinson, who has a large following on his parent-run Tik Tok account. Now Deadline reports that Jeffery Self of Search Party and The...

All credit to Mark Russell, the founding artistic director of the Under the Radar Festival. After the Public Theater, which has produced the international and experimental theater festival since 2006, dropped Under the Radar from its annual programming, Russell rapidly rebuilt. With no central home this season, the festival’s shows now crop up over a greater radius of the city, from smaller downtown venues like the Abrons Arts Center and Performance Space New York to major entities like Bam and Theater for a New Audience.
In its new iteration, Under the Radar, which runs through January 21, hasn’t missed a step. A production assistant who worked on the Max original series “Search Party” has accused showrunner Charles Rogers of drugging and sexually assaulting him in 2020.
A past investigation by the network into the alleged assault cleared Rogers, but Evan Schwartz said he was “gaslit” into “exonerating” the writer-producer in social media posts shared on Saturday.
“The facts speak for themselves as evidenced by this individual’s decision to retract his own statement amid a thorough, third-party investigation which found no wrongdoing. Charles unequivocally denies this claim regarding a mutually consensual relationship,” an individual close to Rogers said in a statement to TheWrap.
This is a selfie Charles Rogers took on my phone the morning after sexually assaulting me in 2020. I was his driver on the shoot for Search Party. After he took this selfie he joked, “I have a lawyer in case someone me too’s me”. I don’t remember falling asleep that night.

I was always under the impression that Blumhouse’s Prime Video cannibal series The Horror of Dolores Roach (read our review Here) was going to be an eight episode limited series, but apparently there was hope for a second season, because The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Prime Video has decided to cancel the show. So the eight episode first season is all we’re getting after all.
The news of the cancellation comes four months after all eight episodes of The Horror of Dolores Roach were released on the same day back in July.
Based on the Gimlet podcast of the same name, The Horror of Dolores Roach came from Blumhouse Television, Gimlet, and GloNation Studios. The show tells the following story: After serving a 16-year prison sentence, the title character (Machado) returns to a gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Based on the hit podcast, Prime Video debuted the Amazon Original series “The Horror of Dolores Roach” this past July, and we’ve learned the series has been cancelled.
After just one season, “The Horror of Dolores Roach” is no more at Prime Video.
Justina Machado starred in the first season of “Dolores Roach.”
The eight-episode, half-hour series is a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale, a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and survival of the fittest.
In the series, “Dolores Roach is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a severely gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone, Dolores reunites with an old stoner buddy, Luis, who gives her room and board and lets her give massages for cash in the basement under his dilapidated storefront, Empanada Loca, the only remnant of her former life.

Exclusive: Comedic multi-hyphenate Julio Torres (A24’s Problemista) has struck a deal with Ars Nova, the Off-Broadway, non-profit theater in NYC, that will see them partner to identify, develop, and commission full-length projects from early-career comedy artists.
The collaboration further expands Ars Nova’s two-decade commitment to new comedy at a time when support systems for NYC-based artists have decreased. Under the partnership, Torres and Ars Nova will look to provide comedians with opportunities for development and production outside of the traditional model of sketch shows and 10-minute sets. They’ll offer funding up front to create brand new, uniquely theatrical shows, while providing mentorship and development resources to the artists involved, the first set for a commission being Ars Nova Vision Residency Alum River L. Ramirez. Others will be announced at a later date.
To celebrate the alliance, Torres will return to the Ars Nova stage on October 26 to host Showgasm.

Emily Gale has been having nightmares which may be related to her mother’s death. Her psychiatrist Dr. North (Laura Bailey) isn’t much help, especially when it comes to the biggest question of all, the identity of Dorothy, whom characters in her dreams mention.
And then, as if by magic, she finds something among her mother’s belongings. It’s a notebook belonging to her grandmother Dorothy Gale (Karen Swan; Guilty Pleasures). And, as it turns out, she’s still alive although confined to a nursing home. Emily makes arrangements to visit, but that may raise more questions than it answers.

Exclusive: Showtime is developing Jonah Kills, a UK-based comedy created and written by Clem Garritty. It hails from Jax Media UK, which commissioned up-and-comer Garritty to generate four scripts before the comedy was pitched to Showtime. There is no work currently being done on the scripts but I hear the intention is to cast and film a pilot after the strikes, and veteran TV director Iain B. MacDonald has been tapped to direct it.
Jonah Kills follows a gay man living in London and trying to find love through sex, only to discover that every person he has ever slept with has died in a freak accident.
This marks MacDonald’s return to Showtime where he was a director on some of the network’s standout comedy series of the past decade, including Episode, for which he received an Emmy nomination, Shameless and Black Monday.

Anyone who knows and loves a theater kid understands that they can be… a little much. To their credit, theater kids accept and embrace this reputation. Both the excessiveness of theater kids and their willingness to celebrate their extremities can be seen in the comedy Theater Camp, directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman. After winning over critics and earning a strong, if limited, return in theaters, Theater Camp has come to Hulu.
Based on a short film that Gordon and Lieberman made with Ben Platt and Noah Galvin, Theater Camp features a group of theater kids trying to save their camp from the founder’s jerky son, who wants to sell it off for something more profitable. Both self-aware and sincere, Theater Camp is a love letter to the over-the-top nerds who can sing every word of A Chorus Line and know that Andrew Rannells was in Street Sharks.

2021 was unquestionably the Summer of Cena, as John Cena appeared in "Fast 9," "The Suicide Squad," and the truly delightful "Vacation Friends." The latter was, in this writer's opinion, the first comedy film since "Blockers" that truly knew how to play to Cena's comedic strengths as a leading man, and pairing him alongside Lil Rel Howery ("Get Out'), Yvonne Orji ("Insecure"), and Meredith Hagner ("Search Party") was a recipe for comedy gold. The film was a huge hit on Hulu, snagging a sequel greenlight less than a month after its debut on the Disney-owned streamer. Less than two years later, the foursome is back for "Vacation Friends 2," reuniting with writer-director Clay Tarver in the process.
The sequel picks up a few months after the first film, which saw Ron (Cena) and a pregnant Kyla (Hagner) finally tying the knot, doing so with their new friends Marcus (Howery) and Emily (Orji) by their side.

The underperformance of “Bros” this past fall has seemingly stoked a passion to reclaim the R-rated comedy’s place at the movies. “Joy Ride” is one of four rescue efforts being deployed this summer. Originally titled “The Joy F**k Club” – a wink at the 1993 benchmark for Asian American representation in mainstream film that it clearly aims to stand alongside – Adele Lim’s directorial debut, produced by “Superbad” writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, follows a mismatched quartet on their comically hazardous trip east.

From the pre-credits screen that implores audiences, “This film should be played loud bitch,” “John Early: Now More Than Ever” announces itself as a very gay show. The comedian’s most comfortable and funniest speciality is using gay vernacular mockingly. At just over an hour in length, his first HBO special is a fleeting and sharp dissection of how Early’s “generation” behaves or misbehaves, particularly online.
Known for his pairing as a writer with comedian Kate Berlant and for his role in TV’s “Search Party,” Early has amassed a devoted following without achieving mainstream stardom … yet, at least. He should have broken out as an actor. His small but memorable part as the best friend of the lead character in the 2016 movie “Other People” hinted at a casual and comfortable presence on screen. The role ought to have led to more parts toeing the line between comedy and drama.

In the opening beats of John Early’s HBO special, John Early: Now More Than Ever, the actor-comedian turns the spotlight on his seemingly unsuspecting parents. “They’re really good-looking, my stupid f*cking parents,” he says with dramatic flair, gesturing to the pair, who couldn’t appear to be more polite or mild-mannered. It’s one of many moments of juxtaposition throughout the performance — Early is clearly putting on an over-the-top persona, one that mimics his narcissistic character in Max’s Search Party and the similarly heightened version of himself in Peacock’s Would It Kill You to Laugh?. But as much as he wants the audience to buy into his egomania, he also takes the opportunity to do something sweet, acknowledging the people who raised him during what is surely a career high.

If you are here, then by now, you are done binge-watching Based On A True Story. Sebastián Silva’s Mexico-set meta-comedy “Rotting in the Sun” has finally found a home in the U.S. and elsewhere after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2023.
IndieWire exclusively shares that Mubi has acquired the rights to the latest button-pushing work from the filmmaker behind “The Maid,” “Nasty Baby,” and “Crystal Fairy.” The Park City premiere stars Silva as a version of himself, here a filmmaker staring down an existential crisis while adrift over his busted latest project, and comedian and social media sensation Jordan Firstman also as a version of himself, an outspokenly gay influencer who blows up the fictional Silva’s life.
This raunchy, sexually explicit satire of gay millennial life amused and provoked Sundance audiences with its graphic content, unapologetic drug use, and a narrative hairpin turn typical of Silva’s low-budget, genre-mixing indies. In a quote shared by Mubi, Bret Easton Ellis said the...

Meanwhile, plot-driven TV mystery series like HBO’s “Search Party” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” rely on comedic writing and performances to power their high-concept premises.
