Interesting idea for an episode, but poorly executed.
ernestbeqiri26 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This episode has left me underwhelmed. I did like some of the fight scenes and, as I said, the idea of the episode seemed interesting, however that mentioned idea of the scenes jumping from one to another constantly was so heavy-handed that it made some of the death scenes less emotionally impactful than they should have been and it made the whole battle less intense.

I did not feel anything for the death of Astrid, honestly, since she wasn't a very good character anyways. Also, I am disappointed that Halfdan died, since I liked the character, and he just got killed off by his own brother (this was the only death scene that was emotionally impactful to me). And, all the other deaths were just unimpactful, especially the one of Bjorn's girlfriend.

Floki's storyline raised some questions, but it was incredibly short. However, it is intriguing how he offered himself for sacrifice.

Overall, this episode as a finale was weak and underwhelming and I expected much more from it.

Rollo pulls a Luke from the Farce Awakens. What is going on with this show?
Bababooe26 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Ok, I liked the dream and reflective scenes in between the battles. The battle was good. Some great scenes. But not enough of Bjorn. He's the strongest character on the show. Halfdan was a good character and actor. He should have had a better death than just standing there. Ivar sucks. He's a comic character. Not good. I want terror, not jokes. Hvitserk should have been killed instead of Halfdan. Better if Astrid tried to kill Harald and got killed by Harald rather than Lagertha. Floki needs to kill that evil bastard. Enough with the flower people.

Last week was a soap opera mess. I hated it. The week before was great with the battle. This week was ok. I hate the whole Rollo is back with helping Ivar. What the hell is that? And then they show Rollo at the end, with No speaking part! Any correlation to Luke from Farce Awakens. What a joke. I know it's just a tv show, and for tv rather than movies we must make compensations for budget and time limitations. But so far without Ragnar, they should have concentrated on the strong characters and actors like Bjorn, Floki and Lagatha. But we get more Ivar Harald Ass-trid, and that stupid Bishop.

I still love the show. I just hope that it would continue to better thrilling suspenseful and shocking stories.

Still Good But Could Have Been Better
hackraytex26 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I have to agree with others on this page that this last episode spent too much time talking and daydreaming. I have never been in battle but no one daydreams in the middle of a battle because that is a good way to get killed. It jumped around too much and I sometimes did not know if we were in Kattwgat, Iceland, or England. Also, some of the characters look too much alike and it is confusing about who is who.

The plus side of this episode that makes me look forward to the next half season is that all of the brothers are still alive and Ivar is definitely the one you love to hate. I do hope in the next set that he finally gets his butt kicked. He is a necessary character and no movie or TV series will succeed without conflict. He is definitely crazy and I don't think redemption is possible with him. He has been destroyed by his hatred of Lagertha and his subplot to get all of his brothers killed so he can have it all. As noted, it is past time for him to get his butt kicked although it would do as much damage to the show for him to die as it did with Ragnar being killed. Hvitserk had better never turn his back on Ivar since he has already made two moves that show that he would kill him if he could. Hvitserk had better find a way to get back with his other brothers if he wants to stay alive. In history, all of the brothers had pretty long lives for that time, even Segurd who Ivar killed. Bring it on.

In medias res, not really what I was hoping for
martymasta25 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In case you do not know what "in medias res" is, it's a form of storytelling where you jump right into the action and then go back and forth. I can understand why they did it with all the visions going on, but I would've prefered a chronological order. We've got some GREAT fighting scenes and yet I do miss some duels, where is the giant clash between BROTHERS? Everything was kind of messy, but still enjoyable. We finally see Rollo, he is on his way to Kattegat!! I cannot wait for Season 5B because this story is not yet over and hopefully we can get those duels between the brothers then, if not, we will see Ivar vs Alfred the great, I do however feel that they will wait until season 6 for that storyline.

Poetical Beauty
tuna-tezgel30 January 2018
It is as if some Tarkovsky slipped into this episode and people are complaining about it. From the first poetic scene on until its final darkness the episode delivered an aesthetic feast with its flash backs, metaphors and construct. It is different compared to other episodes of this series, but i dare to say that this series would have had a higher general score here if it started with this style. People can't stand novelty even when it is something more beautiful.

Futility of ambition, tragedy of war and people who love and lose someone in the middle of this chaos... And yet again we see, some people who have complexes are the source of evil in this world.

A disappointing half-season finale
ernestbeqiri26 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The creators wanted to make this episode deeper and more emotional by experimenting with an idea of scene-jumping, but that particular idea was so heavy-handed that it really destroyed the tension of the battle between the two VIking armies. I truly appreciate that they tried to do something new, however they didn't have to try this hard to make the episode emotional. This episode had no flow to its scenes, and, whenever I was enjoying the battle scenes, those get interrupted by these flashbacks that were poorly edited.

I was not affected at all when Bjorn's new wife died, since her character development was non-existent. The only death scene that I was truly affected by was Halfdan's death, because he was a very cool character and I am kind of disappointed that he just got killed off. And Astrid's death was sad, but it didn't leave a great emotional impact to me. I understand that she wanted to die because she was carrying her raper's child, and that's certainly awful, but the character wasn't very interesting. And, the other deaths are just forgettable, I didn't really care for the characters.

Floki's storyline didn't bother me as much, and it ended intriguingly, however it was really short to make a lasting impact.

Overall, this episode as a finale was truly disappointing and poorly executed. However, I didn't outright dislike it, I still liked some aspects, like the on-and-off fight scenes and the opening scene, but it is ultimately a letdown.

A spectacular dive into insanity, fate, and commitment.
milosz-skow26 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
We finally see brothers pitted against brothers, norse against norse, men against men, women against women. This spectacular mid-season finale brings it all to the table and delivers it in an unsettling, disjointed way. Contrasting the past with the present, expectations with reality, exhilaration with disappointment, and cold calculation with unhinged insanity. It's a ride, so strap on.

Ivar's vision during the battle scene says it all - the "danse macabre" he sees before his eyes. He's lost. Even though it may or may not appear he's winning, he's truly lost...

Lagertha's prophecy, as foretold by the seer many episodes ago, finally comes to pass. But, her death is much, much worse than whatever could have happened to her on the fields of battle.

Brothers duke it out on both sides. Results may vary. We do learn a lot about relationships between particular brothers in those short instances, and why the sons of Ragnarr where the fiercest bunch of Vikings to ever grace this world.

And Floki... oh, Floki...

In summary, a masterful episode. Worthy of a mid-season finale, for sure. Very intense, but also touching and philosophical. Lots of combat as you'd expect, but also a retrospect on the relationships and personal struggles of each and every character. Will leave you wondering about the ultimate fates of the characters for the rest of the season break.

The ending gave me 1% fate for this show, but te episode overall was DEAD in my eyes
Alan_H427 January 2018
What is god's name happend to vikings? jezus christ... until season 4 vikings was pure orgasm, and now i'm watching and constantly thinking "what have they done? where are they going with this?"

It seems to me that once they get enough people to watch it, they start to make it similar to all other hollywood crap... i'm sorry for my language but this is true, and my honest opinion about it.

If you look at the first two seasons, you'll get the perfect image of how downhill vikings got...

Dear producers and all other suit people working on this show: stop taking a dump on this show.... make it great again like the first seasons...

best regards,

a viking fan.... (was).

Directing mess up
the_real_smile5 March 2018
Terrible episode, for what is in my opinion a good series. The story is all over the place, you constantly are thrown back and forth in flashbacks and the present. Looks like the new way to direct, but it fails.

Well, finally a good epidoe in this season 5
mbocquet-0406125 January 2018
Don't undrstand the other reviews Finally some cinematography back in vikings, great character developement, good scenes, finally a battle where something happens, intense. Laghertha fianlly aging, rollo coming back to put some order back in this mess raganr's sons are doing, wrongly. Some viking fantasy back in the game, well made this time. I wasn't expecting a good episode, cause don't get me wrong, 9 bad episodes just for one good in the end, this is TWD way, and it is of course the wrong way to make a show. Vikings should inspires itself from mr robot, better call saul, this is us, homeland, etc... where all episodes get great writings and great acting and cinematography. The guy who talks about hollywood batlle, man, all battles from this seaosn where bad, really bad, nothing well written, erything felt the same and already seen, nothing intense, and here finally we get something clever and well made.

Great Episode
moviehigh8120 February 2018
Don,t know why everyone is so negative about this episode ...ok some are better than others in this season.

But that goes for almost every show!

people complain about the show not being historically accurate well DUHH they have to relay on scriptures and Sagas and little poems written somewhere in the 8 9 10 11th century that and some archeological findings

So yeah a lot is going be left to the writers and producers imagination with the help of a handful of historians !

I like this episode because of the great dialogs between the brothers only thing I don't like is that they don't made it into a 90 min episode now some parts seemed rushed

other than that great episode it had everything dialog action

This season was genius and the finalie was artistically beautiful. Anyone that had a problem with this episode and this season needs to not watch anymore tv forever, because ur mind is limited. Season 5 was the best out of them all for me. Greatly Executed!

The problem with Ivar is the same with Negan in TWD: too much talking. Hopefully, in the next set of episodes the writers will redeem themselves.

This show has a real hard time with character development
giovanefugazza25 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
On it's on, this episode was ok, the problem here was the whole storyline leading up to this episode was awfully written and executed.

The episode focused on mixing the war scenes with emotional flashbacks, it is a move that can certainly work, but only when you give a damn about the characters being focused on.

Michael Hirst has messed up so many times this season it's beyond me, killing off Aethelwulf, who (IIRC) was a major character since the first season, with a casual bee sting is just plain stupid and undeserved to the character (just keep in mind that the cause of death for the real Æthelwulf is not known, so the writer could kill him off in any exciting way he wanted...but... yeah... the dude went with Bee sting) in the end, he wanted to develop Alfre's plot, i get it, but it all seemed rushed and poorly executed.

On this episode there are A LOT of bland scenes that don't work because the plot and the dialogue execution throughout the series did almost nothing to make us care for the character in place, like, did we really needed a 2min scene of Halfdan staring at sand? Or Guthrum (i had to google this guy because i could not remeber who he was) death scene, or Margrette's doing whatever the fuck she's doing, hell even Hvitserk has had a plot so bland this season that i could not care about him at all.

It's really a shame because this show could have been a lot more than it really is, specially with the talented cast it has, and the directors usually do a fine job too. The real problem here is the in inconsistent and underdeveloped writting, wich seems to get worse from season to season. Such a shame.

What the fuuuuck?
aureld26 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I Watched season 1 to 4 in 7 days, BUT season 5 is so much less intereting... and episode 10 is so far the climax of boredom. The rhythm of storytelling is the worste, the fighting scene of Bjorn new wife are just ridiculous, the aparté of Lagertha and Astride is totally weak... and Ivar the boneless walking is... I'm wordless. I feel sad for the actors that already proved their talents.

Journey from historically inspired greatness to vain, hollywood fluff
anand-capri25 January 2018
Absolute disaster, Ragnar is rolling in his grave. This is the first episode to feature a battle where the warring parties bore each other death by talking, singing songs and brandishing make-up fit for a broadway musical production. Might as well chuck in some bollywood choreo in there.

So how did we get here?

The early seasons of Vikings contained vague but at the same time, powerful imagery. Like in Season1, EP1, Ragnar and Rollo fighting side by side with ravens representing the Valkyries and Ragnar has visions of Odin walking through the grass. There were no flashy/excessive dialogues or character glorification through overacting or overly showcasing any single character. The episodes were laden with characters, key events and concepts from actual, historical databases. The deeds of the characters and the events that took natural course portrayed in a casual, under-stated and matter-of-fact manner accompanied with mythological imagery made the show extra-ordinary and inspiring.

Just look at all the fluff now!

When Ragnar and Rollo battled each other in the earlier seasons, did they stop mid-battle to mollycoddle each other or their other kin? No. It was pure rage, hatred and action. The show never needed over-the-top production, which seems to be all the focus now. Also, let's look at the terribly boring Bishop Haehmund and draw a comparison to how Athelston's character was handled. Athelston was introduced as a nobody. Almost froze to death on the way from England to Kattegat, could've easily just been thrown overboard. Compare this to all the fanfare around Haehmund- the excessive dialogues and character glorification despite 0 substance or character development. I can go on with my laundry list of grievances. Writers, directors, producers of Vikings- take an indefinite break, please! You deserve all the praise for S1-S4.

Boy, do we miss Ragnar Lothbrook's charisma and his military genius
Ed-Shullivan25 January 2018
After this most recent episode (Season 5 episode 10) Mrs. Shullivan and I looked at each other and spontaneously said "boy was this a major disappointment". Ever since Ragnar Lothbrook was killed off in the series and the reigns to the Great Hall of Kattegat were handed over to Queen Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) her eldest son Bjorn Lothbrook (Travis Fimmel) and her stepson, the boneless Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen) have been in a battle off and on the field.

In this episode the two stepbrothers Bjorn and Ivar and their current Queen Lagertha literally pull up chairs and sit in the middle of their battlefield to decide the future of their kingdom. Will they continue to violently attack and kill off their respective armies or will they find an amicable solution which will allow both stepbrothers to reign over Kattegat once Queen Lagertha either abdicates her throne or assigns it to one of the deceased King Ragnar's sons?

Ever since Travis Fimmel left the series his best friend and loyal boat builder Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) has been off in his own dreamworld in his attempt to build a new Shangri-La on what appears to be an island that has an imminent volcano ready to implode, or will Floki please his gods and live happily ever after with the handful of Vikings and their families who set sail with Floki, further breaking up the deceased King Ragnar's empire in Kattegat.

This episode was so convoluted I am quite sure that even the writers themselves were confused as to what they were trying to write as a mid season ending episode. This battle was not on the field, but with its TV viewers who were left wondering...."what are they fighting about during this entire episode?" It failed miserably and consequently I have to provide the lowest rating I have given for this series to date, a 5 out of 10 rating.

Sorry, but I call them like I see them

Boring
LMatt811 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Could the characters be any more boring? it's like there's no one you want to root for. Even Floki got boring. So he's got a guy killing people randomly on this new island they live on and his plan is to offer himself as a sacrifice? really?. And whatever happened to Lagertha? why would she forgive margrethe over and over when she knows for sure she's going to betray her after she did it like 3 times already? why would she even care to forgive her?. Ivar's character is not only boring but all around evil. It's like the main character nowadays seems to be what in a normal show would be the nemesis. Ubbe and Hvitserk are nobodies and Bjorn crying for his wife that he met a month ago? ok that's realistic. Hopefully Rollo will bring something new cause after Ragnar's death this is going downhill.

Did the Writers of The Walking Dead Write This Show?
claudio_carvalho26 January 2018
"Moments of Vision" could have been a great show with the new Battle for Kattegat. Unfortunately the non-linear screenplay is awful, breaking the tension along the battle. In addition, now that there is computer for epic battles, the exaggeration prevails and people look like ants. Floki´s segment is annoying and pointless as usual. Did the writers of The Walking Dead write this terrible show? My vote is five.

I'm done with Vikings
ronblayer1 June 2018
What a mess of an episode. Totally unbelievable and confusing, and I am sick of that grinning psychopath son of Ragnar. The good news is that Alfred the Great of England has become king and history buffs know what he did to the Vikings,

Boring
Did they lose the script on the way to the set? Slow motion, dreams, flashbacks, all the things to do when you're out of ideas. Warriors in the midst of battle stopping to stare into the distance to daydream. The worst episode of the all the series. Dull, repetitive, ridiculous. Where's Travis Fimmel when you need him.

Boring emotional Vikings battling for no reason
petercarson-0833511 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I'm confused how we got here... thousands of Vikings fighting against each other because 2 or 3 didn't get along. Doesn't make sense and just an all around boring episode where a couple key characters died for no reason but other than that nothing really happens
