There is a lot different in Season 6, but a lot stayed the same.
fredschaefer-406-62320415 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
For this sixth season, they scaled things back, and stripped down the story, even discarding the distinctive opening credit sequence. The plot itself has elements of THE SHINING, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, THE SIXTH SENSE, and especially, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, for this season is built around our fascination with "reality" TV and "found footage." Both of those genres are not always my cup of tea, but they try to do something with them in MY ROANOKE NIGHTMARE. And interestingly, this season seems to say that the Big Bad here is not the ghosts, vampires, serial killers, and space aliens of past seasons, but us, the audience, and our insatiable desire for real life horror - just as long as we are not the ones getting hurt ourselves.

The first five episodes concerns a TV show built around supposedly actual events that occurred in North Carolina; we meet the "real" people in taped interviews, and then watch as their story is reenacted by "actors." We meet Matt and Shelby, an interracial couple who move from the Los Angeles to rural North Carolina, buying a house in the woods, and hopefully starting over after some bad stuff in their former lives. But this house in the woods proves to be no sanctuary, for there is an evil in these woods in the form of the famous Lost Colony of Roanoke Island, one of the great and enduring mysteries of American history. It turns out that the ghosts of these lost colonists claim the land on which Matt and Shelby's home is built, and they do not take to new arrivals or interlopers, and there is a long history of dead or vanished former owners that reveal what they do to those who trespass in their domain. This evil presence plays on the tensions in the new owner's relationship, and on the fragile emotions of Matt's troubled sister and niece who move in with them. All this comes to a head when, once a year, there is the night of the Blood Moon, when the dead take on physical form and come to settle the score.

That is the plot of the first five episodes, while the back half of the season is the aftermath of the success of the fictional "Roanoke Nightmare," where the producer tries to milk his success for a second season, this time multiple realities collide, with truly horrific results for everyone. Frankly, those first five episodes are clearly the best, with a strong narrative that manages to keep us guessing as to what will happen next. The second half is repetitive and strains credibility, even by AHS standards, which is saying something. We follow three separate sets of fools who rush in and get what they've asked for, more than that, characters who should know better, return to Roanoke House a second time, and a third, after barely escaping with their lives the first time, and after witnessing the grisly demise of friends, family, and co-workers at the hands of The Butcher and her Lost Colonists. There is a noticeable pull back in the sexual content, but there is more than enough gore to go around.

Though they try very hard, this season of AHS never completely grabs me, I am all aboard for the first half, as the mystery of Roanoke House is slowly unraveled, and we are not sure about certain characters, are they villains or are they sympathetic? But in the second half, the show's theme seems to disappear, as it all becomes about delivering shocks and plot twists; they come so hard and fast that the logic holes in the story are forgotten, as characters wander in and then disappear without anyone noticing or caring where they have gone. And there are some tired clichés dragged out for the millionth time: if it's Southern horror, then there has to be a family of violent, inbred hillbillies in the story. A lot of regulars return - Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Lilly Rabe, Angela Bassett, Denis O'Hare, Francis Conroy, Leslie Jordan, Cheyenne Jackson, Wes Bentley, Finn Whittrock - and they are joined this year by Cuba Gooding Jr., Andre Holland, and Adina Porter, who played Lettie Mae on TRUE BLOOD. Lady Gaga has a small part, blink and you will almost miss her. Everyone does a good job with what they are given, but it is a disappointment that favorites like Peters are given way too little to do. I do give them bonus points for casting Bassett against type this year as an actress who grabs the bottle and goes to pieces when the going gets tough. Nice to see Paulson's Lana Winters return, thus tying this season to all the others; if there is a central character that the audience is supposed to sympathize with, it would be Porter's Lee Harris, as she is virtually the only one still standing in the finale episode, but as usual for this series, the last episode feels hurried as the season wraps up the loose plot threads, and her story should have gotten a more fleshed out resolution.

But despite my complaints, as always, AMERICAN HORROR STORY is never dull, and that is more than enough for me.

MY ROANOKE NIGHTMARE concluded in early November of 2016, as the country was reeling from the results of the Presidential election, which many saw as a "reality" show that had become all too real horror story, thus providing Murphy and Falchuk the impetus for AHS Season 7; already planning my binge watch.

Disappointing and busy finale
adamnmaybower16 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I usually don't write reviews on anything, but I felt like I needed to share my thoughts on the season finale of "American Horror Story: Roanoke" Firstly, I want to say that I loved this season and I found that each episode got better and better. I was so excited for this episode, and was quite disappointed. Firstly, this is a horror TV show and yet this episode focused on the trial of Lee Harris, which is not scary - it's too similar to "American Crime Story." Secondly, I believe that too much was packed in, in one episode. We had the cast panel, the court trial, the interview, the ghost-hunters and the finale scene with Flora; it was a muddled mess. They killed off characters we didn't get time to like (the ghost hunters) so there was no real 'horror' attached to it - just some new assholes dying. Overall this was a great season, with a disappointing finale.

Great Season - poor end game and finale
santacruz-5014918 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This was my favorite American Horror Story season. The story was awesome "camp fire" horror story telling. The "re-enactment" gimmick worked once it was clear that was what was going on. The mid-season switch to "return to roanoke" was a great twist.

Stuff we liked: - Authentic "campfire ghost story" - Scary and creepy - Excellent characters - psychic, forest witch, butcher, pig mask dude - Great backstory - Very entertaining/addictive - The return to roanoke "twist" - Crazy hillbillies

Problems that we will overlook: - The whole re-enactment thing was not well explained/revealed in the beginning. It wasn't clear what was going on until the end of the 1st episode or beginning of 2nd. Trying to figure out why there are two of each character distracted from the story telling in the beginning. Could have been very easily setup in the beginning. - Unfinished/spotty forest witch storyline - Unfinished police storyline - why did the local police not seem to do their job and sometimes seemed to be in collusion with the bad guys. - In the last two episodes Lee had already given herself to the forest witch, and eaten the pig heart. And then suddenly Lee is "fine" in the last two episodes. - Finale Episode 10 should not have redeemed Lee, she was a cold blooded murderer. Should have just killed her or turned her into a new butcher. Instead of a good "protector" ghost. - Last two episodes were just over doing it, messy, and unnecessary. Storyline was done, all the additional was just unnecessary. - Too many different TV shows toward the end. The "return to roanoke" was enough. All the additional gimmick shows were just overdoing, and superfluous - seemed to just be there to stretch out another episode or two.

Boring Final
ZegMaarJus8 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode begins with the cast of Roanoke Nightmare at the cinema, they tell about the series. Lee got set free after her trial. Flora tells to Mark that Lee killed her father in court. Lee got set free by the jury, she is not guilty. Lana interviews Lee. Lana tells to Lee that her daughter is missing. Lot appears at Lana's studio. Lot got shot down, he died instantly. The spirit chasers are at the farm house. Amy Chen killed Cricket. Amy killed al the chasers. Flora blown up the farm house. The farm house is on fire. Lee escaped together with Priscilla. Boring Final of American Horror Story Season 6, this episode was so unnecessary. Not one moment it was exciting this episode.

Heartbreaking Finale..
yamurbina25 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
If there's something I loved from Asylum was the heartbreaking finale it had. Here we have a mother's desperation to keep fighting for her daughter to the point she ended up with Priscila so her daughter may see her and love her back again, had me almost in tears.

Now, this new format was something AHS needed. ''Hotel'' and perhaps ''Freak Show'' a bit are the proof of it. They added a new elements: Suspense and subtle jump scares. Which its something I love and always wanted AHS to have since I find horror a little bit tedious. And here comes blood/gore, honestly I only have one problem with gore scenes and its something I hate from horror films in general: the Ketchup blood. Ridiculous fake blood. Seems like they have no idea blood gets darker with time.

Anyway, I think it was a nice concept poorly executed. The whole show, within a show and within another show a little confusing, nonsense. It totally killed the experience. Especially those guys pretending to be spirit hunters and going to a cursed house just to be popular on Twitter. Give me a break.

I don't know if I want this format back again, and if so at least more organized because this season felt like a mess specially towards the end.

And last but not least, what about the intros AHS used to have? what about the unique characters AHS used to have as well instead of ''normal people''?

The most uninteresting finale to date
raiviso2 April 2022
Maybe I wouldn't mind the fact that the finale completely lacked any and all tension of that wasn't something it was trying to pull off. Feels like I wasted 10 hours.

So what was the point?
leolupiano17 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This whole season was bad, but the finale was the worst part. The season so far was kinda bad, kinda OK, but at least it was glued together as the 2 TV shows. The finale was just weird, confusing and didn't really live up to the hype. There wasn't any setting for later seasons as everyone said it will be, so I don't even get the point of saying that in the first place. You never expect a finale to be open, you EXPECT CLOSER. Well, we did kinda get some closer, but unfortunately brings more question than answers. My point is that this season was not supposed to be aired this year. This was OK in the beginnings of the series, but not when the show is so evolved, and has so many budget to get a real good season. It's like it's trying to be cheap, and like they don't really care if the writing is good or bad, they just thought "hey! we can produce an entire season with half the budget we got for season 1!" and they went for it. No intro, no third person camera point of view, no real characters (yeah, lee came back to the house twice after all she lived through in MRN, sure, that's believable)

Please, I really don't want to wait ANOTHER year for a seasons like this

A satisfying way to end a great horror story
awagne-2953611 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Roanoke was definitely my favorite season of AHS (with Asylum in second place). The story kept me interested throughout all 10 episodes, and of all the seasons (or "horror stories" if you will) of this show that I have watched, this one seemed to rely the least on shock value, which in my opinion makes it superior. There were still plenty of horrific moments. This episode did a fine job wrapping up the story and tying up loose ends. I did have a couple of slight reservations:

-A minor character is introduced named "Bristol Windows." Ryan Murphy and his buddies have a habit of creating characters with odd names, but come on! (Maybe it was intended to be comical; I don't know.) Her portion of the episode really didn't add anything (she was basically a YouTube personality and fan of My Roanoke Nightmare), and I would've just cut her scene out. -The Chens' appearance; that just seemed like something out of The Grudge. Fortunately it was very brief.

SOME SPOILERS FOLLOW

On the positive side, Lana Winters appears in this episode! This directly connects this story to Asylum, and there was something about her presence that made this episode more pleasant. The confrontation between her and Lot Polk was easily one of the best scenes.

In this episode another fictitious in-universe TV show is introduced (following My Roanoke Nightmare and Return to Roanoke): 'Spirit Chasers.' This one is almost a parody on reality shows centered on ghosts and catching supernatural occurrences on camera, and the part of the episode devoted to 'Spirit Chasers' was quite amusing. Spoiler alert: they all die, though that shouldn't come as much of a surprise; by this episode all main characters are dead except Lee. The ending of this episode is a little ambiguous and I don't really know how to react. My interpretation is that the destruction of the house represents an end to the madness and gore that has taken place around the house since it was constructed. You pretty much have to watch this one yourself and make up your own mind about the ending. It's entertaining nonetheless. Also, Lot Polk's death was possibly the most deserved in the season.

First time I liked a season
lisabecka30 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This is my sixth attempt at liking a season of AHS and I did, with some reservations-probably because I'm a sucker for both documentaries and found-footage movies, so zipping back and forth between the 'real' people interviews and the 're-enactments.' Possibly also because I've finally figured out to fast-forward past the over the top gore. And there wasn't a million totally gratuitous sex scenes like the Hotel one. I did think they should have ended it after episode 8, when Lee is the survivor and kills Monet. It was questionable enough moving from one reality show to a second reality show, but then moving to sort of a third (with the kids) and the fourth just seemed to be padding the bill. You know exactly what's going to happen and how it's going to happen and have to wonder if you should just fast forward to the end.

However, that raises the question of, if Lee made a deal with the evil being played by Lady Gaga, how could she leave the area? Wouldn't she be chained there to serve the being's purposes? And why did Priscilla need 'protection' from the Butcher when she was, ahem, already dead, and no one else seems to need protection.

The filthy inbred hillbilly family is a trope that needs to be left behind! Hours of footage of grimy places and grimy people get really wearing.

I do think the writers and the actors had a lot of fun playing up stereotypes of self-absorbed film people.

Horror is hard to do, I get that. Once you establish that the house is haunted, and then establish who is haunting it, then all that's left is 'how are they going to get out of this?' It becomes a logistical problem and isn't as scary, but you've got a bunch more episodes to film so you just keep sending your characters around in circles.

I was disappointed
Alright, so basically this season was one of the best ones. With some awesome and very good episodes that changed the whole thing around. They really stepped up their game. But this finale? It was garbage. They played everything out at the end of the 9th episode. After that one, I kept thinking what they where going to do. But then I recalled that Asylum did almost the same thing. So it didn't felt new or original. They also had troubles with their "found footage" genre. At one moment they just didn't do it anymore. Especially at the end. That was the thing what made this season fresh. Of course the found footage genre is nothing new anymore, but we haven't seen it much in a horror TV-show.

Now another thing that really bothered me where the parody shows they kept introducing in this episode. Lee is going to that interview, now she's going to that interview. These morons are going to the house with the blood moon. It was too much and not believable anymore. They should have done a whole episode just with Lana Winters as a host. And she would recap the whole season and then at the end a big twist that turn the whole story around. The problem is that this episode was predictable. From the very first shot I knew how this was going to end. Unfortunately, I was right.

This episode lost some energy as well. The rest of the season was really intense and scary. This episode wasn't one of those things. I won't spoil the big plot details, but I think die hard fans (like me) will be left disappointed. I had the same feeling when area Queens ended last year. We where promised a big bloody finale. But we didn't got that.

So yeah, Murphy disappointed me again with this lousy written finale. I expected much more and also some twists. I didn't got that. I hope they step up their game in the 7th season. And do something original. This wasn't original in my eyes.

A.H.S. Roanoke - The Aftermath After Three Days in Hell!

American Horror Story: Roanoke Season 6 Chapter 10 Review

For its finale, American Horror Story: Roanoke takes us back to the house for one more massacre!

So, the finale of American Horror Story Roanoke was upon us. For those who have been following, in my opinion, the season has been very entertaining. I even mentioned how this is a great comeback for the show, and I how this is the best season since Asylum. Chapter 10 examines the aftermath of the Roanoke TV ,including YouTube videos from super fans and surviving member of the Polk family , a TV special between Lee and Asylum's Lana Winters; a ghost hunting show called Spirit Chasers; various news broadcasts; footage of a panel discussion, and interesting theories.

I have literally loved everything about this season. On the other hand, I did find the ending just a little weak. Also, I find that the show is trying too hard to have all these seasons somehow connect and intertwine with one another (seriously Sarah Paulson plays three different characters!) I like the show within a show vibe. But at some parts I personally got a little confused. It was nice to see Lana Winters again, but I kept asking myself, "Did they really need her back?" Overall, the season was fun, creative, stayed true to its roots of ghouls, ghost, and psychos. The season was a fun ride. I enjoyed it way more than the last season, and I am looking forward to the next season. I believe Season 6 of American Horror Story: Roanoke earns a…

Not Like The Old Days...
crystalmartinezfilm22 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
My god. This season was so terrible I don't even know where to begin. It was tediously slow and ridiculously unbelievable. Now don't get me wrong, all the seasons are unrealistic. But I can't suspend my disbelief if the acting is so atrocious. I LOVE all the actors in AHS when they are in their prime (Sarah Paulson- Lana Winters, Lily Rabb- Sister Mary Eunice, Kathy Bates- Madame Delphine) but this? This was the skirt steak season. I still crave the filet mignon of Asylum.

And I seriously couldn't even listen to the terrible accents throughout. Kathy Bates I love you but girl you need a voice coach, what was that? After her disastrous accent in Freak Show, I'm surprised producers let it happen again. And it was not just her. Lady Gaga's character was supposed to be English I believe, but had a weird Gypsy/Spanish type accent going on. Wat. And Sarah Paulson's British accent? Are you kidding me?!?! She might as well of had a tea cup in one hand and a crumpet in the other. (Was it supposed to be so blatantly terrible, am I missing the joke?)

The production value didn't even feel like American Horror story. The sets were tired and lifeless. The color palate was dull and uninspiring.

And lastly, the introduction of the show within show in chapter 6 was eye-roll inducing. I work in the film industry, but I didn't find all the behind the scenes elements cute. They were meant for people who know the film/TV world, but LA is not the only city on the planet. Not everybody will get the "parody" of a TV production. How about you focus on character development.

I am only on episode 7, but that is very far into the season. If I'm not captured by then, it's not going to happen. Very disappointing all around.

P.S.- Not getting to see Evan Peters until the fifth episode is a tragedy to all.

Great season!
willyjao17 November 2016
OK so even though this wasn't the best season ever, can any of you haters at least appreciate that the creators are trying to do something different? This is probably one of the best seasons of AHS, it doesn't follow a load of story lines, it doesn't have any characters with side stories, I love that it's just ghosts trying to kill the living in a reality TV show type. Also why did any of you continue watching when you all were complaining in the middle of the season? If you were so bored and disappointed, then don't watch 😒 but no you continued watching and kept repeating the same words over and over again, we get it, your disappointed, should've just stopped watching awhile ago. I respect opinions, but I think this season is great!!! I loved the finale, though many didn't :( Yet, I enjoyed the season and the finale very much!! :D

Hey guys, this is the first time l have ever written a review about a show or movie. Just finished watching season 6 of A.H.S and l found it abit crap at the start with the whole interviewing the real people of the story behind roanoke. But the further l got in too the season the better and freaky it got. The gore and acting was awesome. I think the show over all is awesome and l reckon these guys need too do a season on waverly hills sanatorium in louisville kentucky. A movie called death tunnel was made a few years ago about this place and it was crap. But yeah this place is meant to be one of the most haunted buildings in the world.

Easily the worst season
dvdhaven-119 November 2016
Disappointing to conclude that I had wanted a season of American Horror Story to be over already after the first five episodes. I have been a great fan of this show during all seasons, but this one let me down. This season started off very well with the Roanoke story. Interesting angle to have it re- enacted, decent thrills and suspense in the story line. And then it was all over after a few episodes and a second season started within the season, with too many TV-makers inside jokes, eventually turning into a worse version of Blair Witch project with its poor camera work, poor sound, poor story line and irrelevant content. This final episode closes off the season with even more irrelevant content, fragmented across uninteresting rip-offs of TV shows casting yet another third-party view on what happened. All this could have been done in an entertaining, intelligent way, but the producers just blew this season. If this is the inspiration they have left, I am very worried about the quality of the next season.

Worst finale of the entire series
hnt_dnl29 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As someone who is meh about "found footage" movies and wasn't really nuts about the re-enactment gimmick the showrunners went for in Season 6 of AHS, generally I thought Roanoke was a fairly entertaining season UNTIL this horrendous finale! A really boring episode featuring news coverage of a murder trial and a dumb ending with dull scenes between the survivor and her annoying kid (the fake version was annoying too) back at the spooky rural house that was the setting for the first 9 episodes. This episode was SLOW and in a bad way. The season itself wasn't that great, but this finale was the nail in the coffin that may have sealed Roanoke as the worst season, that is, until the cheesy and campy Apocalypse came along. It's a good thing Apocalypse exists or Roanoke would be the actual worst season.

I don't understand the low rating
bustedsmile21 September 2022
I binged the entire season today, and was surprised how much I enjoyed the last episode given the fact that it was the rated the lowest of the season. It becomes increasingly clear that the truth about the house and the property is going to go on, continuing to not be believed as anyone and everyone who goes there (media, police, probably army too if they tried) will not make it out alive and if they did, the world would not believe them. The final scene of the episode really draws this idea home and gave me shivers, as the butchers crowd is approaching the emergency services and media who are at the house.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was a complete waste!! What was the point? This season was just as bad as season 3!! Don't get me wrong, this season had so much potential with the story of the lost colony but to do what they did, WOW!! Complete waste of time & story!! The lost colony is ghosts? They only come back at the blood moon? That part was ripped off from 2,000 maniacs where the murdered southern town from the civil war comes back once a year in the spring!! Don't get me started on this season being a "documentary" type the first half & a "reality" show the second half!! Let's talk about the camera work!! The unsteadyness of an amateur!! How many movies tried this before and failed? Let's move to the "hillbillies"!!! The island is on the COAST!! No in-bread "hillbillies" are on the coast!! I DID live in NC for 7 years!!! Not just that but making them in ways like Wrong Turn was a another pathetic attempt!! The writers have completely lost it!! They couldn't come up with something original!! What was to point anyway of adding the "hillbillies"? How can anyone have anything good to say about this season if they are being honest!! The comments I have read elsewhere about this season have pretty much given it thumbs down, but on here you see several high rated reviews!! Pay attention to the way those reviews are written & some of the words they use because you can easily tell they were paid to write them!!!

Strange but enjoyable once you got past the gore.
systemabuseranu23 November 2016
I loved it. Seemed to be heading back to the standards that the show had in the earlier seasons but I need to know one thing. With shows like this where there is clearly a stack of cash why did they not use a voice coach?

I know some actors will refuse especially when they get to a certain level in the industry. And sometimes it works and other times it does not. Kathy Bates, I love her but really? And as for Paulson's "Audrey" character 90 per cent on target but some words were just plainly what an American thinks a Brit sounds like. And she should have demanded one. Great talent but sometimes you need a little help and there is no shame in that.

As for Bristol Windows? Who thought up such a ridiculous character name (has anyone in the writing team even met a Brit called Bristol?) and as for her horrible accent, it was clear there was no coach on this show and for me it made it laughable. There are many many British actors working in LA. Just choose one instead of this disaster. Or at least let the actress be who she is. An Australian.

Sorry guys but you need to up the game and get a real voice coach on set if you expect to sell this show globally and not be taken as fools.

Terrible finale to a lame season
msmithmob20 August 2023
I didn't think AHS could fall much further after the low of Hotel but they managed it here. From the documentary style re-enactment at the beginning of the season the the pathetic finale it just went from bad to worse.

The idea of Roanoake was not bad in itself. If they had done it in the style of Murder House, with a family isolated in the woods being haunted and terrorised by the ghosts of the lost colony it COULD have been great, but that's not what they did.

The first half of the season didn't work because they keep cutting back the the "real life" victims being interviewed which interrups the flow and pulls you right out of the story. Then the second half is a complete mish-mash with 3 episodes of "Return to Roanoake" where they killed off almost the entire cast far too quickly and ran out of material so they had to introduce new characters right at the end in order to fill out to final two episodes.

Episodes 9 and 10 are utterly pointless. The season overall might be worth giving a 3/10 but the terrible accents drop that to 2/10 and I feel like one star for this finale is being generous.

AHS Roanoke. Great season, poor finale

This is my favorite season of American horror story. It is simple, and the first half is very scary. However, the second half I laughed basically the whole time. This is weak end game and finale.
