Loved It. One of the better Hallmark holiday movies
smithduke5 January 2017
Yes, this story has been done before but don't let that stop you from enjoying it. A woman makes an offhand wish and it's granted. Reminiscent of It's a Wonderful Life. Compared to some Hallmark movies, the characters were believable and had great chemistry. The acting, was well done, especially Nikki Deloach who played Penny and Andrew Walker, who played Stuart. Nothing seemed forced or fake. There was only character I didn't like and that was Jayne, played by Cindy Williams. Very annoying!

The story itself had a valuable lesson about appreciating what you have in life and the movie was warm and sentimental. I actually teared up at times. One of the better Hallmark holiday movies out there. Sure it was a bit predictable but not as much as you would think for this type of movie. Worth watching.

I gave it 7 Solid Stars for the story!
huggibear29 October 2017
I really liked this one. I like it when it has a little mystery involved. It is my ultimate 'wish' to be able read minds and find out what other's are wishing. This movie shows us that what we wish for is not always what we ultimately wanted. So be careful what you all are wishing for, seriously!! You might get what you really didn't want. Was it a do-over for the sisters? Maybe, maybe not. You'll have to watch it and see. However, it's good to be home no matter what your wish was. It's enjoyable, go for it! Happy Holidays to all! Excellent Holiday movie Hallmark! Make more back in time movies like this and see how differently the outcomes can be.

A LOT BETTER THAN MOST
linda-plant24 November 2019
Nikki de Loach is always a comfortable watch. She doesn't shout her dialogue, she doesn't act the ditzy blonde, and unlike a lot of Hallmark actresses, she can act. Casting more mature leads, is always a winner, - and who doesn't like Andrew Walker ?

The storyline is fairytale, but hey its Christmas and because the acting is ok its an enjoyable view for a couple of hours.

Pretty cute Christmas flick
HotToastyRag3 December 2017
At the start of A Dream of Christmas, Nikki Deloach is married to Andrew W. Walker and is a lowly employee in an advertising firm. She wants more out of life, namely a higher position at work and to be untethered from her self-centered husband. But, as Cindy Williams warns, "Be careful what you wish for." All of a sudden, Nikki is transported to an alternate universe in which she's single, carefree, and one of the bigwigs in her company!

It's always fun to watch pretty people in a movie, and Nikki, Andrew, and her other love interest Christopher Russell are all very nice-looking and make for a fun film. Since it's a Hallmark movie, it's pretty easy to predict, and the characters are a little one-dimensional, but it's one of the cuter ones to come from the channel. I would have preferred a different ending, but then it wouldn't really fit in with the Christmas spirit of Hallmark. It's not the end of the world, though. I watched the premiere last year and added it to my roster again this Christmas, because who doesn't like Christmas movies about getting a fresh start in life?

A charming dream
TheLittleSongbird20 April 2021
My expectations were mixed before seeing 'A Dream of Christmas'. Andrew Walker and Nikki Deloach have been good in other things, even in projects beneath them. Hallmark films can be very charming and engaging and they have been capable of quite a number of above average and more films. My reservations come from the premise, which sounds nothing new and quite lukewarm, and because my recent Hallmark viewings have been very mixed.

'A Dream of Christmas' was to me one of their above average efforts. It isn't a great or flawless film and one plot point isn't as good as the rest. But DeLoach, Walker and their chemistry are served very well indeed, and there is a lot of charm and heart to be found. As far as the Hallmark films go from 2016, 'A Dream of Christmas' is among the better ones and one of the better ones from my relatively recent Hallmark/Lifetime Christmas film viewings.

There are things that could have been done better. Did too find Cindy Williams' character rather unpleasant and thought that Williams, despite it being nice to see her again, overplayed her. As a result, the film did lose its warmth somewhat.

Did think that 'A Dream of Christmas' could have done more with its premise. It isn't wasted strictly speaking, but Penny's frustration and dilemma did to me seem too mild. It could have been tighter in the pace and one does know how the film is going to end which it does typically too tidily.

However, 'A Dream of Christmas' does have a huge amount to like. Visually, 'A Dream of Christmas' is slick and attractive. Hallmark often did deliver on the scenery, the locations were seldom authentic to the real thing but they still looked great and lovingly shot, and this film is no exception. There is a tendency in Hallmark to have the music too prominent and intrusive, found neither to be the case (not distractingly so anyhow) here. The script flows well and is easy to take seriously without being overly so. Really appreciated its sincerity, something that's evident in the story.

While the story is not innovative, it is warm hearted and has a lot of charm. The festive feel is beautifully done too. Really liked both Deloach and Walker's characters, Penny is not a female lead character that has negative attributes exaggerated and her feelings are relatable without being too perfect. Stuart is suitably sympathetic. Both Deloach and Walker play their parts beautifully, especially Deloach, and their chemistry is one of the few Hallmark pairings to actually work and feel genuine and worth relating to. Mostly the supporting cast do well, with only reservations with Williams.

Overall, nice film. 7/10.

A must watch Christmas movie.
MIssM193 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I thought I was going to see another "Woman chose man over her career" and even though it was you still have the Christmas touch that helped the story: The leading lady at first enjoys this new life, single, an excellent career, that was given to her. However, she still meets her husband and she learns that Christmas is not the same without him, without the people she loves and realizes that even her sister is miserable without the family she doesn't know she used to have. And that's what this Holiday is about, spending time with your loved ones and gain traditions and memories in the process that will be stuck with you forever.

I have been delaying this movie for a few days because I watched "Just in time for Christmas" recently which is basically the same formula. I'm glad I did so that's perhaps why I actually enjoyed it!

I think what I liked the most was Nikki Deloach. I have seen her before but not as the main lady and she did an outstanding job! I hope we get to see more. Also, I think I Andrew W.Walker did an amazing job (as always)- I swear to God when these two looked at each other... It's rare but I hope they get to work together again! (UPDATE 4/11: They are going to be working together in "The perfect Catch")

So, it's a lovely movie to enjoy. I'm not gonna lie, I was on the edge of tears, even though I knew it would have the happy ever after these types of movie have.

Time to play how do you know that actor
kz917-14 June 2017
A Dream of Christmas follows a wife (Nikki Deloach) who wonders what would her life be like if she'd never married her husband (Andrew Walker). She opines at the mall in to see Santa with her sister and nieces and is overheard by angel (Cindy Williams) and thusly her wish is granted and she wakes up the next morning with her life and those around her lives significantly changed. On the scale of Christmas movies it was enjoyable fluff!

Wonderful movie

Nikki Deloach and Andrew Walker chemistry is out of this world. As soon as they on screen in any film the sparks fly. This movie is so different. I also loved Cindy Williams as the Angel.

Familiar concept but well done
phd_travel5 December 2016
Facing some difficulties in her life a woman wishes she hadn't been married. She gets her wish granted and dreams of life without having married her husband and the consequences of having a successful career and no love. The concept is familiar but the execution is quite light hearted and well done.

The cast is likable and avoids the annoying nature of some Hallmark movies. Nikki de Loach is quite bright without being too perky. Andrew Walker plays her husband.

The lesson is to be grateful for what you have. The alternative could be worse.

Could have been better...
gee-158 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I was a bit disappointed in this Hallmark movie. Primarily, because the premise of a woman finding out what her life would be like without her husband (a la "It's a Wonderful Life") has rich potential for a good holiday time-waster. However, the writers have opted to make our heroine's complaints rather minor. The main thing seems to be that her husband is gone a lot. Other than that, everything seems normal. He is considerate of her and she wants to support him in his work. Her wish to "have never been married" would seem to stem from the frustration of a moment as opposed to some deep-seated issues in their relationship. Such a situation does not seem to merit the kind of universe-altering wish-granting that the Christmas angel (nicely played by Cindy Williams) suddenly bestows. This is too bad because the later scenes between Nikki Deloach (as Penny) and Andrew Walker (as Stu) are actually very good. Ms. Deloach does a great job in quietly communicating her longing for the man who is no longer hers. Mr. Walker is nicely confused by his attraction to the woman who, in this reality, is a stranger to him. The scene at the party where Stu looks around the room and oh so subtly lights up when he sees Penny is a marvelous combination of light, sound and acting. It's a shame really. The too tepid set-up kind of washes out what would be some really emotionally resonant scenes.

A Dream Worth Watching- Good Lead Roles
gehewe28 December 2016
The movie has a bit of fantasy in it which added to its appeal. The story was very good and well done. The lead actress was very good as was the lead actor (I saw him in Dashing through the Snow- he was much better here). I especially liked the role of the personal assistant in this movie.

There it is a simple story with a few lead actors and some supporting actors and we have some success. I think they did a good job at defining the attraction of the lead actress. I would probably not mind watching this one again. My wife dozed a few times on this one but she was very tired. They did a good job.

Great concept for a romance movie, definitely not original, but still well made. Nikki DeLoach in the lead role is very believable with a good supporting cast and it has that predictable but heart-warming conclusion. I enjoyed it.

Poor at tree selection
jmsinternet10 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
There is a big deal made about the Douglas Fir tree, picking it out, why it needs to be one. But then... it wasn't a Douglas Fir! They had a noble fir. Why oh why couldn't they just re-write the script to the type of tree they did buy?

Otherwise the film is fine. But if your idea of a man who works means that you should leave him, the plot of this movie, than poor you. It was wonderful to see Cindy Williams again. Been awhile.

She gets her wish granted and dreams of life without having married her husband and the consequences of having a successful career and no love are granted.

An improved alternate reality x-mas flick
MickyG33328 November 2022
6.6 stars.

Better than the Lacey Chabert version by far. Not as good as some other ones I've seen, better than many, so it's average in this particular spin of the genre; and there have been oh so many movies like this I've lost count.

Woman wishes for a different life, and she gets it, only to realize its not what she wanted. They should've titled it Christmas knock-out. Fact is, she was knocked out when she fell, it probably wan't a dream, but "dream" rolls off the tongue, and leaves a softer impression.

I enjoyed it, it checks all the boxes of this trope (seems to be the obligatory word). I rather enjoyed the alternate reality, it was robust and lively, and it was looking pretty positive until the end. How can "Dorothy" find her way back home "Kansas". Where are the glass slippers, or should we say glass ornament.

The end was wrapped up very nicely, and for me elevated my final rating from a 6.3 to 6.6.

It's a Wonderful Wife?
VetteRanger24 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A wife and mother wonders if she should ever have gotten married. Her photographer husband frequently travels to create a wildlife photo book and she's stuck in job she doesn't really care for, frustrated.

So when she makes a very George Bailey-like wish, and angel grants it and she awakes to find herself a successful executive, but single and suddenly unsure if her dream life makes up for what she's lost without her husband and family.

When she needs a photographer for a new ad campaign, she seeks out the man who doesn't know her and convinces him to shoot it. Will she be able to win his hears a second time? Will she get her old life back?

We like both actors who play the romantic leads, and this is a movie we're happy to watch every three or four years.

"Christmas doesn't come in a box."
adamjohns-4257513 January 2024
A Dream Of Christmas (2016) -

As with Paul Newman's effortless handsome appeal, Andrew W. Walker was so God damned beautiful in this film. He played Stuart, the leading lady's husband and a relationship that she was questioning, because he was never home. To me he has always been divine and made my heart melt whenever I've watched him so despite the daft red beanie that made him look a little bit dopey, I would never wish to not be married to him as Penny (Nikki Deloach) did in this film.

With the wish granted by a mysterious Lady/Angel, Penny's past was changed and her present unsure, her journey to finding true happiness was not an easy one and an obvious surprise, as she was initially unaware that the wish had come true at all.

In her new existence she met Andrew, the major new important client, who was played by the also handsome Christopher Russell. I could see why she might question whether the new path was the right one with Andrew giving her the googly eyes, but would he be all that he seemed?

Ultimately I would have gone back to Stuart anyway, because he had that extra factor, but to see what and who she opted for you'll have to watch it.

I really enjoyed this one, because there was nothing to really gripe about. It had enough Christmas without being over the top. A lovely message of careful what you wish for, love the one you're with, be happy with what you've been given, etc and a warm feel to it in general.

Most of the made for TV Christmas films from 2023 could learn a lot from this one, because they were really quite dire this year!

7.23/10.

Another hackneyed plot device, but....
rebekahrox11 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Our heroine, Penny, frustrated because her loving but frequently absent husband may not be home for Christmas, casually voices a random thought about how she wishes she had never been married. Voila! A busybody and eavesdropper behind her in line uses her Christmas Angel powers to grant her her "wish." Except it is not a real heartfelt desire, it was just a momentary voicing of some mild frustration. She loves her husband dearly, and her husband is crazy about her. He is absent because he is a wildlife photographer, and it is now or never to catch the reindeer migration for his book, which is a mutual dream for the couple. She can no longer go with him because they decided she had to give up her marketing of his photos to get a paying job to support them until his business becomes profitable. And now she has to give a presentation that may lead to a big promotion.

Horrified and bewildered at her new life, she encounters the Christmas demon…er, angel again, but the cold rhymes with witch refuses to take back her thoughtless whim..er… sincere wish. It was nice to see Cindy Williams again, but the character she plays is really creepy, scary, and mean. I don't think this was intended. I blame the director. She has the gall to blame Penny's dilemma and tragic consequences (her happily married sister is now single and her children no longer exist) on Penny and then on God himself, refusing to see it was her grossly inappropriate and unasked for meddling that is at fault and it is her responsibility to fix all of the collateral damage.

Enjoying some of the perks of her rich and successful new life, Penny briefly flirts with just moving forward and forgetting her past. A very handsome new client wants to date her, she likes her VIP status, her important position and the work she does, and her Jaguar. Who wouldn't be tempted? Luckily she and her husband never had children. So that is an important hurdle she doesn't have to jump. Only two things are wrong. She misses her husband, and her sister is no longer a happily married mother.

It sounds like I didn't like this movie, but I really did. It is based on a very weak premise, but Penny's journey really is done well. Her flirtation with the client, who seems at first like a great guy, is tanked because she knows and feels like she is still married. She seeks out her husband, now a very successful corporate photographer, and sparks still fly. The chemistry between them is some of the best I've seen in a Hallmark movie. Andrew W. Walker, a Hallmark perennial, really touched my heart in this, as did Nikki Deloach, as Penny. Of course, all is settled in typical Hallmark fashion but this one had some intriguing qualities and even a few surprises.

It is almost a form of dish. The recipe- It's a wonderful life ! But all details , not the real great but nice are good in this case. A film about familz, desires, live, angels, Christmas , a charming prince and a poor photographer, a Cinderella becoming princess and the wise need to old life. The art to use familiar pieces and to give a charming portrait, touching, naive, so predictible are the virtues of this charming film in which Cindy Williams gives, in beautiful way, the key of lovely story.

More of the pro-marriage / anti-success messaging.
JP952 January 2022
Ugh, again. It's a cute enough movie (Andrew Walker is the highlight), but I'm tired of film and television preaching that someone can only find happiness if they choose marriage over their own career and success. Lame. It's the exact same message of "The Family Man" and Hallmark's "Just in Time for Christmas" and countless others.

Not everyone chooses this path and that should be okay. Filmmakers should realize that *all* of us want to see ourselves reflected in their characters, not just the audience members who have chosen marriage over career and freedom.

As an aside, another doctrine Hallmark loves to hammer home: that women can only be attractive when they're perfectly coiffed, wearing gobs of makeup, and dressed to the nines (with absurd heels). In my opinion, the exact opposite is true, and Penny looks so much better at the very beginning of the movie!

How stereotypical!
purplefish-9779214 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Woman has to give up everything and follow her mate to find happiness. He doesn't have to do a thing to improve the relationship. He doesn't have to change or give up a thing. She gives up her career to follow him around on his travels, like a puppy dog . Her mate puts his own needs above her. He HAS to break his promise and run off to Alaska right away. Why? Because. If he doesn't, he may not be able to finish his book. There should be some give and take, not so one sided. That's all I have to say. However, I am short on the minimum number of characters to reach the six hundred characters that are required. I do not understand why there is minimum number of characters required.

A heartwarming film to watch
archie_matthews17 November 2019
It was indeed a heartwarming film that makes you just want to snuggle with your loved ones while you watch. Every now and then, I'm in the mood of watching light and feel-good movies to get in touch with the season and Hallmark movies does the trick!

The concept of someone waking up in a different reality only to find out that you wanted things back to the way they were before adds intricacy to the story and it made me want to continue to watch until the end and hope for a happy ending!

The actors were believable and I felt the chemistry between Stu and Penny. One other strong point of the movie is the wonderfully set stage design and decors. The lights and colors are enchanting. It definitely brings in the joy of Christmas!

Overall, I rate it a solid 8/10 and I fully recommend it to everyone who are trying to get to the Christmas Spirit.

Spectacular
RNMorton23 October 2021
I have to admit I came in ten minutes late but the cable summary was enough to catch on, maybe it even made it more fun to watch. A very effective Nikki Deloach gets her wish to see a different life. Things sort of play as you might think, but even though we see the Hallmark formula there are a few different twists in this one. Carol Williams is great as the helpful angel. Even I (a guy) got a little teary at the end that's how well it was done. Recommended.

Well done!
