‘McVeigh’ Review: A Drama About the Oklahoma City Bomber Has Low-Key Sociopathic Atmosphere to Spare
“McVeigh,” a drama about Timothy McVeigh and the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, is a movie rooted in the forlorn underbelly of small-town American rage.
A car snakes its way along an empty road in the desolate dusk. Men nursing cheap beers sit around in roadside bars, strips clubs, or living rooms with ugly wood paneling. And Tim (Alfie Allen), an impassive loner whose scraggly beard is an outgrowth of his not bothering to shave, sits behind his table at a gun show, hawking $2 bumper stickers that say “When guns are outlawed, I will become an outlaw.” At home, he points a weapon at the TV set, like Travis Bickle, miming the execution of the U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno as she testifies at hearings about the FBI siege of the Branch Davidian compound at Waco. Tim also travels to an Arkansas prison...

How do you follow one of the most critically acclaimed rock docs of all time? Michael Wadleigh’s seminal 1970 documentary “Woodstock ” was immersive and electric, a definitive, you-are-there experience rather than a here’s-what-happened chronicle.
Despite its ambitious title, “Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation” is a here’s-what happened chronicle. There’s nothing wrong with that; most documentaries fit a similar category. And this one — which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and opens theatrically in May — was made for PBS’ “American Experience” series to mark the event of Woodstock’s 50th anniversary. So even if it never steps out of the shadow of its powerful predecessor, its relatively smaller scale is perhaps inevitable.
But let’s start by taking it on its own terms. Director Barak Goodman (“Oklahoma City”) brings us back to 1967, when buds John Roberts and Joel Rosenman have the wild idea to throw a really groovy party.

Does the world really need another movie about Woodstock? There are fewer of them than you might imagine, but the two that most readily spring to mind feel like a closed parenthetical: Michael Wadleigh released his definitive 1970 concert documentary when the music was still echoing across the fields of upstate New York, and Ang Lee’s 2009 “Taking Woodstock” suggested we should have left it at that.
Barak Goodman (“Oklahoma City”) and co-director Jamila Ephron (“Far from the Tree”) must have disagreed. Made in conjunction with PBS, timed for the 50th anniversary, and set for a proper theatrical run before airing on the television channel later this year, their “Woodstock: Three Days that Defined a Generation” revisits the epochal music festival as if it had never been done before — as if the Aquarian Exposition isn’t the only rock concert in American history that gets its own page in high school textbooks.

Dolores Huerta watched the documentary about her life, Peter Bratt’s “Dolores,” multiple times before she could really process her emotions about the project.
“I think I had to see the movie about four times before I could finally settle it down and process it because so much of it was bringing back so many memories of things that had happened in the past,” the 87-year-old activist said at a Q&A following a screening of the film at the International Documentary Association’s annual screening series. “It was very emotional, of course, to see all of those scenes of everything we had gone through in the movement.”

This new documentary film summarizes, illustrates and connects one of the principal structural elements of American society …. since the country began over 300 years ago. It is told through the discoveries of two white southern and privileged women who grew up uncomfortably aware of their own advantage in the long shadow of a disproportionately large disadvantaged population, that of the African Americans.
The argument that The Long Shadow cogently, convincingly makes is, that today descendants of millions of African slaves brought here still suffer discrimination and multiple entrenched social injustices which are specifically designed to keep these people down and exploited.
Director Frances Causey and Co-Creator and Editor Maureen Gosling attended the festival and I had the chance to talk with Maureen about the incredible amount of research that went into this film. “It’s surprising how much you can find by way of images through Google these days. Frances sent...

Given *gestures at the shitshow of America in the last 11 months*, it’s perhaps not surprising that the last time white people went truly bugnuts crazy, in the early 1990s, has been capturing the imagination of filmmakers recently. “Oklahoma City,” about the worst domestic terrorism incident in American history, is one of the best documentaries we’ve seen this year, Sam Worthington and Paul Bettany starred in a miniseries about the Unabomber, and Jaume Collet-Serra is planning a movie about the Waco siege.
