Butch Hartman shows seem to get worse and worse.
ABigFatOrange1214 July 2020
When I first saw this episode, I had me interested and I did enjoy the pilot. But the episodes after that usually ranged from average to awful with few good ones. I quite like the characters but there was a lack of development although this show only lasted for one season. The animation does look cheap which is a shame since I really like flash animation style and can be wonderful to look at when done right, I feel a lot of the stories have potential but are never used in that way. This show had potential but was held back by the writing team and subpar animation.

What Happened to Butch Hartman?
dventuretme27 March 2017
This show is extremely bland and generic. When I first heard this was made by Butch Hartman, I was pretty shocked to hear that the guy who made The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom, managed to make such a forgettable, one-dimensional show, featuring a concept that's been done hundreds of times before.

The animation is lazy, even for Flash. The characters have no personality and they all fall into stereotypes, that we've seen many times before. Unlike with FOP and DP, we get no introduction to the show, and no explanation as to how Bunsen came to be and how he entered the life of Mikey. The first episode just starts, with them already being friends, expecting the audience to just accept the fact that a boy is friends with a monster.

The main villain, Amanda, is very dull and her main goal is to get rid of Bunsen. Her motive to do this is unclear and apparently non-existent. Every character plays the role of someone like the villain, comic relief, best friend, love interest, etc. but none of them do anything new with it. Every episode is just as bland as the characters, lacking any intriguing stories or funny jokes.

I find it amazing that such a bland show came from such an amazing writer. At least most of the time, when good writers go bad, you can tell they're at least trying to do something new. This time, it seemed like he just came up with the idea off the top of his head and produced the overall, idea for the series in a couple minutes. Bunsen is a Beast is a very mediocre and unfunny show and if you gave it a chance, you'd find yourself bored to death, halfway through the first episode.

Bunsen is a Beast....it's animation
evilmonkeysnamedjoareatt25 February 2017
The animation is pretty bad flash compared to other shows like My Little Pony and Star Vs the Forces of Evil.

The Voice Acting is not the best. I don't blame the actors since they're pretty good names like Jeff Bennett and Kari Wahlgren. It's a shame that every voice in the show is incredibly annoying to listen to.

The Stories have really poor flow. Just point A to B with no character development. Just seems like they're trying to tell jokes but they fall flat.

The humor style is Hartman's but not at his peak. None of the jokes work and with all the voices being annoying it makes them missing stick out more.

The characters are pretty bland and with no proper introduction. Shows like Littlest Pet Shop and most other shows introduce the characters in some way via song or something. Give us a reason to care.

One of my least fave Hartman shows
mipsymipson25 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Having seen several episodes of this show I have gone in with an open mind each time, but every time I try to watch it just seems irritating. The show centers around two main characters Bunsen and Mikey, both these characters to me come across as bland and unlike-able.

Bunsen has an incredibly annoying voice, this can make watching scenes with him extremely tedious and being as he's the main character it means long exposure to it.

Mikey's voice is slightly more tolerable. My main issue with him is his design, being a big fan of Hartman's art style I was incredibly disappointed with how it all looks. Mikey especially looks awkward. We also learn nothing about how Mikey is friends with the beasts. A simple back story or commentary at the beginning could of helped improve this.

Well that's the main characters out of the way so let's talk about the side characters. There isn't really that many to choose from. Amanda acts as the villain here but her motivations are unknown which makes it hard to care or get invested with her character. Her design looks pretty ugly.

The teacher, not much I can say about her, but one thing I noticed is that she does her job horribly. To the point where she says that she basically didn't know that she is a teacher, I know this is played for laughs but it just made her seem super stupid.

The jokes in this show are some of the worst jokes I've heard, I found myself just face-palming whenever a joke is mentioned. The delivery is off and they usually make no sense.

The story isn't much better, with poor pacing continuity. The show seems to jump from different scenes in an awkward way. the overall episode plots just fall flat as there either stupid or boring.

Overall this show to me is a major disappointment, it's not like I can even say its a first attempt from a new animator and give it a little excuse. But this is from Butch Hartman, who has worked on and created so many different shows, so it shouldn't feel this amateur, but sadly it does. I hope this show can improve, but I shall sadly no longer be watching it.

Bland, voice acting unbearable.
johnandanother7 June 2017
Now I liked Fairy odd parents and Danny phantom... but this show is an insult. Nick is really trash now and pretty much all of the shows are absolute garbage. When I my brother showed me this, I thought it would be good, but the voice acting... it was just trash. Overall pretty bland and stupid. Anyone who says this is a good show, wouldn't know a good show if it hit them in the face.

Awful!
dror9819 June 2019
This show sucks big time, butch hartman created a great shows like fairly odd parents, danny phantom and many more, even today nickelodeon has a decent shows like The Loud House, the new spongebob(from season 10, even that is not great as the old seasons), Robot and Monster, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and many more from the 2010s in the other hand, there are new awful shows on nick like this show, Rainbow Butterfly Unicorn Kitty that is even worst that this,ALVINNN!!! and the Chipmunks that is less awful but still bad, Breadwinners is awful but less than this, Sanjay and Craig again less awful but still very bad. nickelodeon need to get back with great shows and return many great shows that cancelled, there are so much that i can't say all of them now they have only spongebob that the new seasons less good that the previous seasons , The Loud House if fine but the rest is bad. i expect the new movie of spongebob very much it looks very good at least in the description of the film.

It's definitely good, I just feel like it could've been better

Warning: Spoilers
I'm a huge fan of Butch Hartman's work. I remember when this was first green-lit, and then seeing it was made by Butch Hartman? I was stoked! So I've watched some of the episodes... I think it's a good show, but it has some minor issues.

I like the 2 main characters, Bunsen and Mikey both really care and look out for each other. A complaint I see a lot are the voices. Personally, I think their voice fit all of them well, but they do however scream a lot, which imo can be a bit annoying. Also, it's animated in flash... I think flash is smooth and it's cheaper, but it just looks, unprofessional... I think flash may be the new way of animating shows, so get over it. I also LOVE the "Tex Avery" cartoon-I-ness to the show!

My main complaints are Ms. Flap, Amanda, and the jokes. I really don't like Ms. Flap, she just yells weird lines and jokes. and Amanda? She just doesn't feel like a good antagonist. If they elaborated on the fact that Beasts are evil, she would have more of a leg to stand on, but they didn't. Also the jokes are just random. Some jokes are funny, just some of the jokes pop out of nowhere and kinda make no sense.

So Bunsen is a Beast, its definitely one of Nicks better shows (Better than those crappy sitcoms am I right?) I just feel like it could've been better. Remove the random jokes and prove that beasts are truly evil so that Amanda would make more sense, and this show would definitely be Nicks #1 show!

EDIT: The recent episodes imo have been gradually improving, it's definitely a good show. Reading YT comments, I often see people complaining about the show for these minute issues, I personally think it's a good show for what it is! It upsets me seeing how much the show is disliked... please don't watch with high expectations, it's just a cute comedy :)

Good, but could've been better.
botlok19 January 2023
This show is pretty good, but I do think it could've been a bit better. I do really like the two main characters, Bunsen and Mikey, as they are funny and always look out for each other. However there are some issues here.

The main villain is very cliche and she also doesn't really have a reason to be evil other than because she can. Also, while the voices do fit the characters, they get very loud and annoying at times. Some of the jokes are too random and ridiculous. Random does not equal funny. However, there are still good jokes here. The animation also isn't the best, but Flash/digital animation is the new standard at this point, so no point in complaining over it.

Those are the flaws, but here are some of the good things. A good thing about this show is that it doesn't have a lot of gross out humor like some other Nicktoons in the past. (eg. Sanjay and Craig, Breadwinners, Fanboy and Chum Chum) Like I stated above, I really like Bunsen and Mikey as characters. The plot is good, with the villain wanting to get rid of the titular character for being a beast and not a human, and I like that this show teaches kids a good lesson about including others, even if they are different.

I don't really understand why this show was canceled after only one season? I didn't watch this show until recent but it was pulling pretty good views when it first released.

What could've been better: get rid of the random and loud jokes, make the villain have a better reason for being evil, and polish the animation a bit.

Overall, 7/10, this show is pretty good, I think all the good outweighs the bad, and you should definitely give this show a shot.

Great cartoon
BoxwoodExpress23 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This is Butch Hartman's next show after FOP, Danny Phantom, and TUFF Puppy. Nickelodeon has been going downhill since 2009. All the years before then were awesome. 2006-2008 were meh. 2009 ruined Nickelodeon. After then, Nick still had good shows: House of Anubis, The Legend of Korra, Robot and Monster, Penguins of Madagascar, Victorious, All In With Cam Newton, Legendary Dudas, Paradise Run, The HALO Effect, 100 Things To Do Before High School, Harvey Beaks, and Miraculous Ladybug, but they were all canceled for no good reason. Meanwhile, everything else was mediocre or just sucked. Not to mention great shows like iCarly, Spongebob, and Fairly OddParents went downhill. The only good shows we have now are Spongebob (it got better), TMNT, Ride, Power Rangers, The Loud House, and Bunsen is a Beast. This show is great, its like Ready Jet Go for older kids, but with some toilet jokes, cartoon slapstick, and bullies. Oh, and BIAB isn't about space like RJG. Bunsen is like Jet because they're both strange creatures from another world, and are perpetually happy and love everyone. Mikey and Darcy are like Sean and Mindy because they're humans and friends of the protagonists. Mikey and Sean are alike because they're smart, adorable, and wear green. Darcy and Mindy are alike because they're both adorable little girls. Sophie Sanders and Sydney are also alike. Amanda Killman and Mitchell Peterson are alike because they both hate the protagonist and their friends, and want to get rid of them. Anyway, Bunsen is a Beast is one of Nickelodeon's saving graces, due to being sort of a throwback to great classic Nick cartoons, and it provides clever social commentary on racism. Think about it. Bunsen is the first beast in an all-human school. Beasts and humans have never got along and have never went to the same school. Everyone at school, is weirded out by Bunsen, but Mikey, Darcy, and Sophie are kind and accepting of him. Amanda bullies Bunsen, because he's a beast, but Bunsen is nice to her back. This show promotes acceptance, kindness, diversity, and champions the right to be different. Plus, it doesn't promote bullying like the other Nickelodeon shows, (I'm looking at you, The Thundermans) because Amanda always gets punished for her actions and the main characters don't torture or abuse others for fun Plus, the plots are creative, silly, fun, and easy to follow for little kids. It has lots of great jokes and pop culture references. The animation style is AMAZING, even if it is animated in Flash. It has a style distinct from all of Butch Hartman's other shows, creative character designs, and Gorgeous looking backgrounds. It has very few toilet jokes, which is great because Nick puts tons of toilet humor into their cartoons into their shows nowadays. I definitely recommend this show.

Stamp of approval! Renew it for the good of the many!!
Bulldog17217 July 2018
This butch Hartman revival show tells the story of Mikey and Bunsen the magical beast in the town of Muckledunk. With the town goofball Amanda on the hunt for beasts, Mikey tries to help Bunsen not get caught by Amanda to be exposed!

Awesome spinoff... great plots, characters, and just overall timing really made me go fanboy over this show!! This reminded me of the Fairly Oddparents by a meer 200%.

It shouldn't have been cancelled, Nickelodeon if you're reading this, bring back Bunsen is a Beast! It helps us 90's kids from crying over the shows you took down that we loved!

Stop with Spongebob! Bring back Bunsen!!!!!

One of the better Nickelodeon shows out today.
mobengafer6 April 2017
Most Nickelodeon shows today are either a live action sitcom with bad acting and a laugh track every 5 seconds for someone getting hurt and people getting bullied or a show filled with bathroom humor like Sanjay and Craig. But this is different compared to other nickelodeon shows it has very few toilet jokes and great backgrounds the animation may be bad but the backgrounds is what matters more. I like cartoony shows like Gumball and SpongeBob this has the same humor. Nickelodeon has a lot of bad shows but it also has a lot of good shows today. The great ones are this , SpongeBob , Harvey Beaks , Hunter Street , TMNT and probably Welcome to the Wayne since the first 7 episodes were very good. I have mixed feeling about The Loud House and Ride. FOP has gone really bad over the years since Sparky came. I love this show but in needs more airtime because it seems like SpongeBob and The Loud House get the most. Both of those shows have very high ratings so we need to boost up BIAB ratings.

Great Show!
idkrealsm1 May 2017
This show looked bad a first, but when you get into it, it is amazing. We all loved the fairly odd parents, right? Well this has the same exact charm and I hope Nickelodeon renews it for more seasons. This show has gotten little attention and I feel like it should be getting way more. With shows like these, Nick is coming out of the dark ages and getting better. Now all they have to do is remove the live action shows...

Warning: Spoilers
This show is truly amazing. In the past two years, Nick has done some awful things with little good things like "The Loud House" and Harvey Beaks" Scattered around there. This show is about a beast that goes to middle school alongside his best human friend Mikey. The plot is very intriguing and I thing Butch Hartman can do more good to Nick with it.

Better than the fairly odd parents???!!! Warning: Spoilers
When I saw the previews for this show I said, "Oh no, the cash grabbing flash animations has transferred from Cartoon Network to Nick." I WAS COMPLETELY WRONG!!! This show is amazing. Everything about it makes me want to see another episode. If you see previews you might think that this will be bad, but it has depth and the characters are thought out. I hope the negative reviews will be beat out because this show is great. My favorite episode is the one where the main villain is the hall monitor. Bunsen and Mikey get the new job because she is treating everyone badly. I love how they can make clichés entertaining.
