The range

A simple music video that lets the song take center stage, which works for this song as you get to see the musicality of the range at work. That rat tail though, so 80s.

The magic touch

Most music videos tend to show some spectacle of all sorts to bring audiences to see the artists and listen to their songs, and the visual spectacle turns the sound of music a little more memorable (at least for those more focused with images than with sound). Big budgets, interesting concepts or effects, everything dazzling to sell the music. This isn't a general rule but it certainly defined most of the MTV era in the 1980's, with their Thriller's, Take on Me's and Sledgehammer's of the period. A break of this rule was the ones coming from simple concepts of musicians and groups just performing their songs and nothing more; and with that came one apparently passable video that had a special charm: Bruce Hornsby & The Range and their top hit "The Way it Is". The spectacle created by Mr. Hornsby is the piano, the piano and the piano, hands and fingers all over the keyboard creating one of the most unforgettable melodies of all time, greatly presented by nice close-up shots which also focus on him while he's singing and the band as well. It's something that must be seen, no description makes justice to the masterful power of the song, which also has relevant and impacting lyrics that wouldn't translate well if the clip director had decided to create a short film with a story.

A magnificent experience to the senses, something to be explored, seen and heard countless times...that's just the way it is and some good things will never change. Loved it. 9/10

The way it is

Warning: Spoilers
Bruce Hornsby and Steinway go together in this mesmorizing video that stands the test of time with its civil rights message. It's hard to believe the video is nearly 40 years old but it lives on and on for sure.
