🚩 Red flag...
The_Boxing_Cat24 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
They all said that he's such a good kid: loving, caring and always has been. No one, not one saw it coming- what's to say it won't happen again? He's exactly where he needs to be, a much needed time for reflection on his part.

I totally understand the father's perspective, but the mom seems like she's in denial.

Really!!!

Is it just me or are these people delusional? All smiles as if nothing has happened. Even the one cop had a stupid grin on his face. Grandma and grandpa should have been afraid. Nathon shows no remorse, there's no life in his eyes. No way in the world would I be visiting or forgiving. Mom dad wake up and face reality.

Why Did He Do It?
s-a-apple17 July 2019
I'd estimate that roughly 60% of the film can be described thusly:

"Why did you do it?"

"I don't know why I did it."

"Why did he do it?"

"I don't know why he did it."

"Why did I do it?"

"I don't know why I did it."

The end.

American Suburban Guns Culture
ue-5366029 December 2020
What do you expect from a boy who grew up in a suburban American town with semi psychotic uncultured parents, who have guns under their beds? It is shocking. The parents come out as unstable as the boy in this documentary and he obviously had very little affection from them in his earlier years, thus the reason why he had temporarily lost it. I hope he will fully recover and move on with the rest of his life( away from his cold unkind parents).

There has got to be more to the story! What I really want to know is where is the daughter, not any mention of her. Seems a little weird to me! Idk

I think I know why he did it.....
eakogan24 May 2023
This is an excellent documentary that does what documentaries should do: documents the facts. Everyone watching it will interpret those facts according to their own worldview and their own culture.

The overarching question on everyone's mind is, WHY? It took me watching the film twice to have an idea. The movie only gives us a glimpse into the boy's life, and if this life was what I think it was, it's hard not to have sympathy for the guy. Parents had suffocating control over his life. No privacy, cameras watching your every move inside the house. Constant punishment for the slightest indiscretion. I got the feeling that the mom used the punishment system instead of hiring a housekeeper. I am sure the parents will say that they love their son and that they would give their lives for him. No matter. Life under that roof was torture. I suspect that he feels freer inside the prison than he did at home. I also would love to hear the daughter's opinion of what was going on in that house. To this day he refuses to say, why he did what he did. He is still under his parents' spell and under their control.

Other part of this household was love for hunting (the grandma is quick to put in a disclaimer: hunting is not murder; it's our way of life!) Well, if legalized killing of a living being that cannot put up a defense is your way of life.... There is a very short distance from murdering animals for fun to murdering humans for your freedom.

Interesting but the only person who got it right is the Prosecutor

Warning: Spoilers
There's not many reviews here but a few want to blame America's so-called love of guns. Let's be realistic, though: the right to bare arms is a necessary right that protects citizens against tyranny. One kid using guns within the home has nothing to do with being raised by uneducated hunters, either. Americans started out as uneducated hunters, basically. The Menendez Brothers were not uneducated. What is most troubling about this story is that the parents are deeply in denial, perhaps through a series of faults including that the psychiatrist has totally missed the diagnosis on this guy for he is obviously a sociopath. Sociopaths are excellent deceivers who routinely fool family, friends and employers until (if or when; very rare) they decide to act on their instincts. They are wonderful friends, excellent children, perfect employees, successful in whatever they put their mind to. They study others and, almost instinctively, take on the traits they see are successful in others. But inside they feel tormented at having to follow the rules of society, their parents, or their spouses. The seethe over small infractions. They feel they are right even when 99 other people tell them they're wrong. They play along, often collecting several good friends, cajoling coworkers or classmates, and being the perfect father/son. They are chameleons playing a game that will give them the biggest rewards. But inside they are empty, they've been known as a violent storm that only exposes the serene inner 'eye' until they encounter severe opposition or keep playing the game but being denied the reward. Most families whose sociopath became a criminal say they never had a clue. Look at Scott Peterson.

Nathan told everyone in the first few minutes of the film why he did it, he said, "I was mad." But then he goes on to act like it's a huge question mark. This is another very typical sociopathic trait, being dumbfounded by their own actions so that others will feel bad for them. Aww, poor thing! Imagine trying to kill your parents and not knowing why. That shrink is not worth her salt because this is classic sociopathic behavior. Classic. That grandmother was not the one trying to control Nathan, so she was safe. He'll do his time and then he'll get out and punish whoever tries to control him later, possibly in a similar way. Maybe even his parents and finish the job. You don't empty a gun into someone and not intend to kill them. Nor do you try to kill someone and not have some kind of serious deficit going on in your brain. He's probably a model inmate making all kinds of friends to call on for favors later.

This film is truly shocking in how blind it is to what actually happened. And imagine being the mother and wondering if you were too strict. Well, yes, you went too far in punishing him, but that's not why he tried to kill you. And another symptom of dealing with a sociopath is always trying to make sense of things that don't make sense, which describes these parents. God bless them. I hope they get it before they let him back in their lives.

Testament to America's love of Guns
markcornwell-318182 April 2021
The documentary that never asks: should we have a full cabinet of various firearms unlocked in the house?

There is zero insight to this documentary. Just a documentation of how dumb and armed we are as a society.
