The Slayer is here!
highmarksreviews3 May 2019
Whether you thought Brendan Fletcher was annoying or off-putting in Slabside early on in the season, after seeing "Star City Slayer", I'm sure all of us can agree on the former. The Slayer wasn't just one of Arrow's best one-off bad guys, but maybe one of the better Arrowverse villains of the week.

A huge part of this episode's success came from Fletcher's performance. It was a whole other league of disturbing, crazed and obsessed. His interactions with the Queen family during the climax was a season highlight.

This also marked Arrow's first time really tackling a horror-style episode, which it did decently enough. It certainly had the atmosphere, but the trailers gave away Dinah's (Juliana Harkavy) ordeal with Stanley, which I was kind of disappointed by. Nevertheless, a little more blood helped further the seriousness of the episode.

By and large, the narrative was placed firmly on Fletcher's maniacal raves and rants to carry it through. Aside from a major player leaving the show and one big flash-forward reveal, it was all drama and little action. The final bunker fight in the post-apocalyptic Star City didn't really impress me.

From what I wrote above, it is evident that with all the slaying going on, Arrow managed to further itself while focusing on a new bad guy from Oliver's (Stephen Amell) not-so-distant past. "Star City Slayer" broke the curse of lame one-off bad guys and delivers on its premise accordingly, despite a little inconsistency.

Mia Smoak

Warning: Spoilers
So, our worst fears came true, Stanley returned as a villain of an episode. However, luckily, it seems to be a one-off and hopefully we never have to see him again. His character never quite fit the tone of the show, and as hard as they tried, this wasn't their best effort to have a 'Horror' themed episode.

Just as I did last week, I should give credit that the writers are at least trying new things, unlike their Central City counterparts. They tried to do their best 'Se7en' impression this week as Stanley ripped through a few of his victims and nearly killed Dinah in the process. Meanwhile, as an audience, we went through an entirely different horror, as William took center focus and his grandparents came to take guardianship of him. Phew, at least that arc is over, for now.

Curtis is apparently taking a new job and exiting the show, in real life. Which gave me two reactions: for one, it makes sense. For the last 4 seasons now, he's essentially just played Felicity 2.0, just out in the field. There's no real point in having two tech based characters do the same thing week to week. The second thought being that it felt very anticlimactic. Maybe that's because they have already said Echo Kellum will likely return at some point or because it was episode 13, but besides Felicity, he didn't really get a proper goodbye with anyone.

The double reveal came at the end of the episode as Felicity found out she was pregnant just as the future showed Maya to instead be "Mia Smoak". Why they decided to give her Felicity's last name instead of Oliver's, I'm not sure, but it's surely an interesting choice to add a baby into the mix. But that's what happens when a 23 episode a year show goes on for 7 seasons, and counting.

It's getting back to normal, and that's what I'm scared of.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode was okay. It wasn't outrageously bad like some of the other episodes but it wasn't fantastic. I hope the show doesn't go in the direction that it looks to be, with Diaz and the whole plotline centered around him. I loved the last episode. They need to go in that direction with Oliver fighting a mysterious new foe. I did LOVE, however, THAT CURTIS SEEMS TO FINALLY BE LEAVING THE SHOW!!!!!! I wish they had killed him in Season 6 and I wish they actually killed him in that episode with Diaz and the VR thing. I was sooooo happy for a moment until I realized the CW didn't have the balls to do that. All in all, it was an okay episode elevated by the apparent departure of Curtis.

A memorable episode

I donno about you but I quite liked this episode. I think the feeling I had after watching this episode was like when I watched Kapushion episode from season 5. Stanley brings a type of charisma Adrian Chase had. Probably that's why Diaz isn't that good of a vilian for me.

I would've disliked this episode if they kept dragging on the Teen-William drama but I liked that atleast it had some good acting from Stephen Amell. Overall I wouldn't mind if they do episodes like this. I liked this horror/thriller format and Arrow is at its best when it focuses on the team at a personal level regarding the villain. That final confrontation between Stanley and Oliver was awesome. A+

Restores my hope for the season

Warning: Spoilers
After two mediocre episodes, this one was really great to watch. Stanley was convincing and scary to watch and although the haunted house was a little over the top, it still worked for me. Also Curtis left so that's always a win

This episode was the second best episode after Slapside!! The twists and turns and reveals in this episode were mind blowing, with what happened to Dinah and to Blackstar's reveal!!

Ouch!
rabihwaked-213-68458131 October 2019
The theme of this episode is totally different! I felt like I was watching a horror movie, and I totally loved it. The writers this season are way better than seasons 4,5,6 and I am actually enjoying the conversations among the characters. Even the annoying felicity seems to have changed, in a more interestingly complex role. Well done writers! Also well done fight choreographers, this show can finally rival some fights in daredevil! But not top them though! Still, much better than before, bravo! I love the future flashbacks as they bring a breath of fresh air to the show. I hated the repetitive island's flashbacks before. They got to the point where they became super boring. But not anymore, all's good now.

Insane killer idea but boring flash forward.
cruise0115 August 2019
3 out of 5 stars.

The insane killer roaming the city that has vigilantes after is an interesting villain. But was very short lived. The flash forward is dull and has a surprising twist which feels incoherent.

Split up? Have you never seen a horror movie before?!
samofnine28 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Besides that rusty gag this episode fails to generate thrills despite its contents. The topic William was so clearly predictable and the return of Stanley was a bit overwritten. But the most confusing and impossible thing is, that the future kids are all kind of the same age! Diggle jr. was a toddler a few years back and Felicity just got pregnant while William looks like 10 years older than now and Zoe should be a bit older too. And when that future shall play in 2040 then they must be 20 years older than now. And yet they all meet in the future in nearly the same age!? I say it's bad casting and the makeup for the older actors just doesn't look natural. And where was Emiko?! She could've helped Oliver, but obviously she was erased from existence in this episode. That's also bad writing.

I'm glad Arrow is finished next year.
I have followed Arrow from the beginning, but since season 4, it has got progressively worse. This season is by far the worse. It's a complete mess and instead of flashbacks they are showing the future which just confuses the whole thing. I would actually be happy if they ended it now...

Curtis leaves. Best episode ever!
juggalojack7 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Title says it all really. Worst character in the series, even years after it ended, still the best because it's the last time I have to endure his bad jokes or him trying to shoehorn his way into saying "suit up" every episode. I realise a lot of this show contains whining and character development at the same time but his was terrible. A fine costume attempt, I'll give them that, but the actor was just wrong from the start. There are plenty of other DC characters they could have used as a side kick but they stuck with him for far too long. It could be worse though, he could have turned up in the final crisis event!
