And so it continues...
highmarksreviews9 May 2018
I was very skeptical when a Karate Kid TV show was announced. The first movie has become an all-time classic and while its two sequels or reboot have not been well-received and have not aged well, there was always that healthy dose of corny nostalgia, powerful character moments and Pat Morita's Mr. Miyagi to bring any moviegoer back to the franchise. So I was pleasantly surprised when "Ace Degenerate", the launch of Cobra Kai was such a home-run. William Zabka really soled me on Johnny Lawrence and the fact that we are getting a reverse-plot is even better. The show really aims to portray Johnny as an anti-hero of sort, and succeeds in doing so. Seeing Ralph Macchio also co-star is just as fun as it was seeing him in the movies and the rest of the teenage cast help modernise the otherwise those occasional wacky 80's vibes. That's one gripe I have with the series so far. It seems a little to stuck in its time-period to move forward and thus the entire premise feels a little forced. However, when you take into account the fun story, well-written characters and the surprising amount of respect for the source "material", Cobra Kai is shaping up to be something special.

Cobra Kai never dies

Warning: Spoilers
From the trailers it was clear that there was a comedic slant to the material (and I got half a dozen solid laughs from it), but the humor doesn't undermine the dramatic aspects. The balance is just right, delivering something that's at once fresh and familiar. This first episode is very Johnny-centric, and Zabka is very good at being likeably gruff. It sets the stage for an interesting character study. In this case; the lifelong fallout from a single event and its effects on those involved.

A shift in entertainment.
mm-391 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I was skeptical of the new series. The 84 classic is hard to replicate. My prof told me once about changing social forces in society , and the best way to check the public's temperature is with entertainment. After years of watching Politically correct cookie cutter entertainment which has complaints of getting old and changing. The old flat characters of rich, blond, bad guys (Raiders, Diehard etc) with a lecture of good against evil scripts have been turned upside down. In the age of Trump, we now have fresher, but harsher entertainment similar to the Sopranos. Ace Degenerate breaks all the rules and is ugly. There are racial, political, sexual stereo-types, miss conceptions, realism and characters which have depth. The Johnny Lawrence character is lost in the 80's, a bit of a jerk, but there are reasons why, and sometimes Johnny needs to be, and yet Johnny is his own worse enemy. There are shots at P C culture, millenniials, and we find out Daniel Larusso is a nice guy with character faults (temperament arrogance etc). Audiences have a hunger for real life and depth, not social lectures which gets across as self-righteous and Ace Degenerate delivers. There is a convenience store scene which had to happen in real life. One cannot write such material. Lawrence only gets involved with characters out of selfish reasons when Lawrence's car get involved. Many friendships start out like Lawrence as a protege for a younger version of himself. The viewer sees what happens when an alpha male loses his alphaness, becoming a wreck. We see the home environment which helped create the flawed hero with the viewers help. There is a clash of the two schools of Karate one offensive/military (Lawrence), and the reasons, qualities for it. There is the arguments for defensive karate which Larusso represents with the spiritual side of, balance/peace and examples for it. What I thought would be a cheesy spin off turns into a deep series about people and society.

Priceless twist on one of my top childhood movies. LaRusso plays the the clown sporting a combover/toupe and Johnny the antihero is still living in the past.

I love the story and am just now watching episode 2. So far its great!

Honestly a pretty good start!

While i did not grow up watching the 1984 Karate Kid movie, i have watched it a couple of times and enjoyed it quite a bit for its underdog story and 80's vibe!

Therefore i was both surprised by this episode and I actually oiked it quite a lot! Shifting focus over to Johnny was a brilliant idea! Him living in the shadow of his former self, miserable, really shows how much has happened and it helps us understanding him a lot more than the original movie!

Him struggling with life, while Daniel achieved succes, makes perfect sense, and offers some great dynamic between the two and helps keep things fresh and interesting!

The episode also manages to keep the 80's vibe that made the movie so good!

Overall a great pilot with some interesting themes and a great way to continue off from the movie!

80's nostalgia with an up-to-date flavor

Was not expecting this to be as good as it was. Great kick-off to the series. The 80s nostalgia is thick in this episode. Great handling of the cannon of the series. This is definitely more comedy than I expected, but it works.

Miyagi have hope for you.

I don't have time to write a review for each episode. This is for Season One as a whole.

Somehow, they've recreated the magic of The Karate Kid while doing it in a modern and surprising way. This is terrifically entertaining television programming. It has just the right amount and level of 80s nostalgia. It deals with modern issues in an expert way, which seems like it wouldn't be possible with characters pulled straight from a mid-80s movie.

Thankfully, they aren't in your face with any political issues that would alienate half the audience. It's just a fun show. Yet, at the same time I have teared up more than once, which shows that they caused me to care for these characters more than I ever did in the movies. Quite a feat.

Enjoyable unambitious light entertainment!

Do you need bad taste to get through the show? - Clearly!

Is it trashy, and completely unpretentious? - For sure!

Is it a cheap production ? - By every standard; - comes close to some Carpenter movies ( "They live", et al)

But, tell me, is it better than the original? - By miles!

  • The simple twist, to make the angry and unlikeable prototypical anti-hero the hero, in company with the dry, yet not all-too subtle, humour, really saves it.
To be honest: For me, the simple good- vs. evil plot, influenced strongly by George Lucas, of the original, connected with its terrible 80s presentation, was always completely unbearable. So. the Ace Degenerate certainly deserves his revenge!

34 years later!
yaszi-832969 November 2021
This episode is great, it beautifully shows that Johnny Lawrence's life hasn't been going to good at all, he is just a pretty depressed alcoholic now, he doesn't care about the outside world and he's just still living in the 80s. This episode is great because after showing us now Johnny's life is going he decides to help a kid and get back into karate, this is the at the end of the episode and it perfectly sets up the next episode.

So basically now we have seen how Johnny's life is going and we know he's gonna help a kid learn karate, this is great, this invest's people into the show, they wanna se what happens to this kid Johnny's decided to help!

Ace Degenerate
Prismark1016 May 2018
Well I was not expecting sequel television series to The Karate Kid films set over 30 years later.

The first episode centres on Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) the antagonist from the original film and the films reminds of the characters from 35 years back as we get flashbacks to the events of the original movie.

Lawrence is a gruff loser, a low level racist, doing menial jobs. He is definitely put out each time he sees a billboard or an advert featuring Daniel LaRusso's (Ralph Macchio) beaming smile as he advertises his car showroom.

When his new neighbour, high school kid Miguel is bullied by some thugs, Johnny springs into action using his karate moves. Migues asks Johnny to teach him karate. At first he says no but later, Johnny decides to resurrect Cobra Kai, his old karate school.

It looks like this might be the reversal of the plot of The Karate Kid, especially now it is LaRusso who is rich and successful.

The Karate Kid was a rather cheesy movie with enough fun factor. The first episode of Cobra Kai bathes on nostalgia but delivers a fun comedy drama.

At LaRusso Auto Group, we KICK the competition!
Hey_Sweden24 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The adversaries of the classic 1984 martial arts drama "The Karate Kid" are re-united 34 years later for this interesting series which gets off to a fine start with this debut episode. It sees a reversal of fortune take place, as Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) is now living the life, owning & operating a series of car dealerships in Encino. Meanwhile, his high school / tournament nemesis, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) is having it rough. Johnny loses his handyman job after mouthing off to a snippy customer, and gets his car badly damaged by a hit-and-run driver. He's also living in a rather seedy complex.

But, inspired by the movie "Iron Eagle" of all things, Johnny is motivated to get his life back in order, and thanks to a cheque from his crusty stepfather (an amusing cameo by Edward Asner), he has the funds to re-open the infamous Cobra Kai dojo. Initially wary of his chatty, friendly teen neighbor Miguel (Xolo Mariduena), he decides that he will teach the put-upon kid some karate and begin looking out for him.

Sometimes trading on 80s nostalgia (with a soundtrack including Poison and Foreigner tunes), and utilizing unused footage from the original movie, 'Ace Degenerate' does a very good job of getting us to invest in Johnny as a reasonably sympathetic character for whom to root. And it also commendably turns Daniel into a not-so-sympathetic person, who's become fairly obnoxious, with a couple of truly hilarious TV spots for his business. Johnny understandably still resents him, especially when he seemingly can't turn on his TV without seeing one of those ads.

A likeable supporting cast and a compelling story have given this viewer hope that this series does indeed build on the original film series & its characters in interesting ways. It really is fun to see the various unused footage from the 1984 film, including a scene where the unforgiving Kreese (Martin Kove) *severely* admonishes Johnny for losing the tournament.

One may indeed miss the late, great Pat "Mr. Miyagi" Morita a lot, but I have no doubt that 'Cobra Kai' will do a fine job of honoring his memory.

Eight out of 10.

Warning: Spoilers
COBRA KAI seasons 1 and 2 and parts of season 3 are a great mix of 1980's nostalgia and with the heart of what made the 1st 3 KARATE KID movies fun to watch and even THE NEXT KARATE KID movie which was the last onscreen appearance of PAT MORITA .R. I. P. As Mr MIYAGI , but this series shows him respect by including footage of him teaching DANIEL how to grow as a person without becoming the thing he's fighting against -- seeing JOHNNY'S FRIENDS return was a great tribute to their enduring legacy and sad that it was the last acting performance of ROB GARRISON .R. I. P. , as TOMMY , and the deleted scenes with them are funny and worth watching -- but after season 3 it kinda goes too far by bringing back TERRY SILVER who it seems has split personality issues because at first he's NEW and IMPROVED and at peace with being a businessman but after JOHN KREESE basically bullies TERRY SILVER he seems to revert back to his KARATE KID 3 personality of NO MERCY which makes him seem like Dr JEKYLL and Mr HYDE in a way that's disturbing to watch especially when he sets out to CONQUER the VALLEY with COBRA KAI DOJOS everywhere -- the unnecessary characters are : KYLER his arc ended when MIGUEL beat him up , KENNY is COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY, STINGRAY his arc ended in season 3, and the various TERRY SILVER SENSAIS that he brings in that seem like they're going to be the focus for season 4 and 5 and maybe more -- my SCORE for seasons 1 , 2 , 3 is 10 STARS ⭐ -- my SCORE for season 4 is 8 STARS ⭐ --

Love the vibe... too bad this pilot is too short
JustHavingALook28 January 2023
Ah... the good old 1980s nostalgia vibe, I guess they took inspiration from stranger things, but anyway... how come this pilot is just 20 min?? One less star because of that

Regardless of that: great job in setting up the situation with Johnny as a main lead. The dude is down his luck (big time) and of course we expect him to go back to do some karate stuff.

For some reason I enjoyed the way they put together his apartment, a credible mess. Everything smell cheesy and I like that.

Love the fact that they did not sugar coated him, he's a tough guy who understandably doesnt care about the political correct stuff millennials breath in every day. He's a selfish loser who lives in a past that was never glorious, and he knows that. The flashbacks are on point and necessary, like the fight scene at the mall (good job, editing team).

I expect him to become more open and warm and kind in the coming episodes, and of course to see a fight with Daniel.
