Binge - watched the entire season in one day!
jebophos2 January 2020
I found this series brilliant! It has great characters, plenty of action and excitement, and gets you thinking. In today's age of political correctness, it's sad to see so many people get all worked up about the subject matter. If you are easily offended over any little thing, just save yourself the trouble and skip it. Otherwise, I highly recommend watching this series!

its bingeable, interesting its a fiction but i like the idea , ask yourself what if jesus comes during these times..messiah took it to the next level
johnpebenito2 January 2020
Ask yourself what if jesus comes during these times..messiah took it to the next level, its a smart tv series by letting people decide if he is true or not, by letting viewers decide if he is a hoax or the truth, and love the idea that he doesnt come in a specific religion he always say i walk with everyone , so no religion affiliation when it comes to al mesi, however the tv series looks expensive location shooting and all and authenthic , israelites speaks hewbrew, arabic countries speaks arabic i love it , it looks authenthic , its bingeable , not perfect but really is interesting, again this is a fictional tv series i hope we get a seaSON 2, im atheist but i enjoyed it ...

Intriguing!
dpoland-765891 January 2020
Of course this will be sensitive viewing for devoutly religious people and some are automatically going to hate it because many parts rely on subtitles. A pity.

Give it a try. It is a different and interesting premise, well acted and well filmed.

SEASON 2 PLEASE!!!! Thought provoking and so well written!
sovericoool15 May 2020
I was hooked from episode one. Actually binged the whole series in 2 nights. And the final episode was so great it left me scrambling to find the release date of season 2. And then I find out they are cancelling it??!! This is crazy to me!!!. I thought the characters and casting were perfect. The writing is so well done, the storyline was such an interesting mix of religion, human struggle and an honest look at society today. Perhaps that why self-absorbed critics didn't like it? Maybe it was too much of a look in the mirror for some?

All I know is that if Netflix doesn't "resurrect" this series I am going to be hugely disappointed. Unlike many series that get renewed with no real reason for another season, Messiah clearly has a bigger story to tell, I could see the trajectory and the momentum this series was building. This story is far from finished!!

I know there was some controversy and criticism from some religious groups as well as some Arab countries. Perhaps Netflix doesn't think the pushback is worth it? Last I checked, art was meant to move people, provoke controversy...takes courage to support a religious themed series in todays liberal, somewhat Godless society.

I for one have not given up hope, maybe Netflix will read all these positive reviews and bring it back. Just like in Messiah, miracles can happen!

Thoughtful, Respectful, and Seriously Entertaining
SaveTheRepublic3 January 2020
As an ordained clergyperson myself, religion movies are often hard to watch because they get so many things wrong or treat subjects with an overly simplistic take. The writers of Messiah have not only crafted a well-written, compelling story with interesting characters and terrific acting, they've included real substance and authentic representation of religion.

The religious characters--Muslim, Christian, Jewish--are sympathetically presented with dignity and complexity. The religious texts and varying theologies are sensitively handled and respectfully addressed. Nor are religions presented in stereotypical ways: for example, Islam does believe that Jesus will return to herald in the end times, something not often known outside of Islam. But here, in Messiah, it is Muslims who first begin to follow al-Masih, believing him to be Isa (Jesus) returned.

At no point did I hear a character say something about a religious idea or do something in the guise of religion that was outlandish or the usual Hollywood version. The writers of this show clearly know what they're talking about and should be commended for that.

Further, the geopolitical, cultural, economic, and other issues are addressed in thoughtful ways that are not dumbed-down or simplified. They even manage to take on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in thoughtful ways.

In addition to all of that, the story is gripping and keeps you guessing all the way through. As one who believes that authentic faith requires embracing uncertainty and doubt, in many ways, this representation of lots of different people struggling to figure out whether al-Masih is the messiah or a charlatan was pitch perfect.

Brilliant
palacerevolution20003 January 2020
I loved this show. I had no intention of watching it, liking it, but kind of fell into it. From the very start I was captivated. By the superb writing; the great acting. I loved that many of the principals were not well known. And I have to say that Avi, and especially the Messiah were awesome. It has to be very daunting to cast these roles. The Messiah was utterly believable, mesmerizing. In the episodes there were so many iconic scenes and lines. I had to binge watch the whole show; good thing I was off work for the day. I am still reeling from it. That is why my review is so scattered. The warring religions, the nations, the tribes and races were all handled with insight and respect. This is not a show about a cause, or a point of view. It is about the arrogance of humanity, and maybe about a reckoning to come. I'd like to add a few points. I thought his speech early on ( I think Episode 2) on the steps in Jerusalem was very powerful. "History has ended"; and "no more bargaining with God; that day has passed; step forward and it will begin". There are other quotes by him. Matter of fact I wonder who wrote much of that dialogue. Also it there was a point made through out the series of young people, children in key places. Jibril and Rebecca with the eyes of the world upon them in Epi. 9. Neither one sure of what they were going to say, and both transcending. But everywhere you look in the show you see young replacing, needing to replace old. The era of old white men, and their running order must end. I don't say this as an opinion. It is stated as fact. And re. a Season 2 - yes of course, one wants to see more of this high caliber of writing and acting. But do we need things wrapped in a bow, Hollywood style? Are we that shallow? This tale has been told. Part of the narrative is just this - that we don't know, can't know. It is a call to action. That we are the actors of Season 2.

Shame on Netflix!
kevscratch-932-59594229 March 2020
I just read the article that Netflix has decided against a second season of this amazing series. Why on earth would Netlfix basically cancel it? Let us hope that another network picks up this amazing series so that the story can be continued. When I see all of the mediocre materail Netflix currently is producing, I am stunned to see they are dropping this ground-breaking series. Shame.

Some people are going to give zero because of their religious believes and some people are going to give 10 because they don't like those religious people. So just watch it by yourself and don't look at the reviews.

TV show which showing beliefs of three major religions
bosnjoman2 January 2020
I don't understand Muslim people who would say that this show offends Islam. Me, as a Muslim, believe that something like this will happen. A man will appear who will claim that he is a messiah and he would have abilities to cure the sick, alive the dead and much more. He will come from the East and he will have followers from all religions. That's what Islam says. Of course, the true Muslims will know that he is a Dajjal, but also some Muslim will be his followers. This show is from Christian or Jewish side of story, and for them this guy will be messiah. Message for Muslims which disapprove this show: If you couldn't recognize Dajjal in TV show, how would you recognize him in real life.

Peace to all good people.

Must be watch
qubeck2 January 2020
As a Muslim, I would like to thank the producer and author of the series. And thanks for the respect he has for Muslims. The understanding of Messiah is not in our religion. But I would like to thank you for their beautiful and level approach to each religion and for their humanistic view of the world. It's a production that needs to be watched and respected. It's the best show I've seen in a long time. Worth every minute I spend at the beginning.

An at times confusing incendiary thriller.
eelen-seth1 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The religious-based thriller series, Messiah, is one of the first new Netflix Originals of 2020. Created by Michael Petroni, known for writing films such as, The Book Thief and The Rite, the story unfolds from the points of view of multiple narrators.

When CIA officer Eva Geller (Michelle Monaghan) uncovers information about a man (Mehdi Dehbi) gaining international attention through acts of public disruption, she begins an investigation into his origins. As he continues to cultivate followers who allege he's performing miracles, the global media become increasingly beguiled by this charismatic figure. Geller must race to unravel the mystery of whether he really is a divine entity or a deceptive con artist capable of dismantling the world's geopolitical order.

It's interesting to see a series about politics and religion, and the criticism on both subjects being made by a platform like Netflix, in the way they present it like they do, with Messiah. Not only do they cover different religions and similarities between them, but also the locations in which the entire story takes place, is on a more international level, to which at least one third of the series is subtitled, due to different languages (in this case Hebrew and Arabic) being spoken by our main characters. This way the series reaches a broader audience, and discussion leads to word of mouth, which leads to more viewers checking out the series.

As the story unfolds, multiple perspectives are interwoven including that of an Israeli intelligence officer (Tomer Sisley), a Texas preacher (John Ortiz) and his daughter (Stefania LaVie Owen), a Palestinian refuge (Sayyid El Alami) and the journalist (Jane Adams) who covers the story. All of these very diverse characters have an important role in how the "Messiah"'s actions will develop and in to which extent the world will try and stop or encourage his message. This influences the viewer to go either way in believing this mysterious man's vision, when more and more weirdly inexplicable phenomena take place all over the world.

A sandstorm of biblical proportions is the start of a political, military and religious shift in the world, but with social media and videos/news going viral in no time, what is real and what has been altered to entertain and push the masses into believing what governments or criminals want you to believe?Messiah makes you think about religion and politics, without ever judging anyone's beliefs.

One of the stars of the series, Michelle Monaghan (Mission: Impossible - Fallout), as the driven CIA officer Geller, brings us a composed and strong female character with her own personal problems, who's constantly worrying about her sick father and questions everything she's ever believed in. She's here to ask the real questions and investigate if this isn't all just part of a cult or some sort of apocalyptic propaganda. Monaghan gets to showcase some of her dramatic talent early on in the series. She does seem to be presented as the poster child of the series in earlier news articles and trailers, but this isn't the case. She shares most of her precious screen time with other international actors who have a big part to play in the whole of the story. Tomer Sisley (We're The Millers) is one hell of an actor, he plays a seriously troubled Israeli intelligence officer, who has to deal with some personal issues. His performance is pretty typical for the character he's playing, but with his accent and rough looks, it gives him that extra edge at being tough and menacing, ready to shoot anyone that looks in his direction.

The real star of the show is Mehdi Dehbi (Tyrant). The man he plays is smart, he's highly educated and knows everything about everyone - he sees you like you really are. Dehbi, with his piercing eyes, is perfectly cast as the main character. The looks and somewhat arrogant confidence, make him seem dangerous, when he tries to portray himself as someone safe and someone you can confide in. He makes mistakes, but this could all be part of a bigger plan he has in his mind. Dehbi embodies his character and steals the spotlight in each scene he's in, even with the most established actors, such as Monaghan herself.

The writing isn't as focused as one might hope for. It's confusing at times, while jumping between different locations and following several different main characters at the same time. This does get better later on in the series, when everything starts to come together and settles down. The writers do make an effort at keeping everything eventful and exhilarating, with a few spectacular special effects heavy scenes, which are designed wonderfully.

Messiah is an incendiary thriller that explores the power of influence and disbelief in the age of social media, made to provoke and look beyond what's right in front of you. A geopolitical scam or a miraculous resurrection?

Did I watch the same thing that everyone else did?
NS-movie-reviews30 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm really puzzled by how this show has an almost 8 rating.

Literally nothing happened... I love/am all for slow burn, higher level thinking, introspective shows. But this gave me nothing to work with. Nothing at all. The Messiah himself did nothing. He spent like 60% of the episodes in a hotel room. I am so perplexed. I thought the concept of the show seemed intriguing and that there would be suspense, action, events that would hook me in. But I was bored for 10 hours.

Aside from that, there were no good characters to attach to, root for, or feel all that compelled by. The most interesting was Aviram who got much less screen time than many other less interesting characters. For example Felix, who was by far the most annoying character I've seen in awhile.

I'll give a 2 star for some rare moments of intrigue, but honestly I can't find too many redeeming qualities.

Awesome show
urbanspider1 January 2020
This show is brilliant, I'm totally captivated and can't stop watching. It's phenomenal, your either a follower or a hater, just like in the show. It's totally unique, and I sincerely hope they haven't created a scam out of the messiah, that would be a cynical washout. The low rating is certainly not reflective on the show, or acting. The subject matter was always going to divide people. Brilliant. More seasons please!

One of the best shows Netflix has ever done
idhondia2 January 2020
Just became a member so I can post a review Messiah. Finished watching the whole series in 2 days and it is utterly brilliant. The cast are just fantastic, almost every character is brilliantly played and very believable. The story grips from the start and some of the scenes, especially when the Messiah is in chains and being interrogated, are up there in intensity with the best scenes from Breaking Bad.

The production and location shooting, not sure how they got permission to film at the Dome of Rock in Jerusalem, adds to the intense realism. I was really impressed that it took no sides between Israelis and Palestinians but showed both to be flawed in their own ways as well showing some background and context to the whole political situation in that region.

Would definitely recommend.

Definitely Binge worthy! Captions On!
billyt334 January 2020
I normally don't like to use captions, but you will need them for about half the time through this series, and it didn't bother me at all! It's a very intriguing series that makes you want to know "what's going to happen next". Makes you think and is very entertaining. If you need a series to get away and enjoy, I would recommend you give it try.

Not answers, no suggestions. Only a respectful serie to different cultures and religious, well crafted, careful about details, good acting and a large liberty to give your answers to a reality- so expected and imagined by Christian- , a hoax or only a seductive - provocative serie. Its basic virtue- in special manner it represents a serie about its audience.

Intriguing for many muslims
zahranedian18 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to share some reflections about the controversial new series, "The Messiah", as I believe there is a lot of confusion surrounding it. But what is more important than the disputed identity of the so called "messiah" is what's happening around him.

There is, of course, the typical political agenda of the show. For example, it isn't the Israeli military occupier that is shown killing people in Israel. It is only the Muslim suicide bombers. In fact, the Israeli army is shown to be so benevolent that they allow hundreds of Muslim refugees safe passage into Israel, and never harm a single one of them. Even the one Israeli intelligence agent who has harmed people, is humanized and multi-dimensional. We meet his little daughter and her mother, and we see him tormented by what he had to do in his line of work. We even get an explanation of why he harmed the boy (because his father was a terrorist who killed the Isreali agent's mother). The violent Isreali agent is shown as redeemable and is told by the "Messiah" that God loves him.

In contrast to the Isreali character, we see a "Muslim" character who teaches Quran at a madrasa (school). We know absolutely nothing about him, except that he has a long beard and walks around in a thowb, looking angry and reciting Quran in Arabic. And this leads to what is most disturbing and sinister about this series.

This "Quran teacher" never speaks about politics. He expresses no political views or even grievances. There is no "political brainwashing". No grooming. No training. Just Quran. One verse in particular:

"O you who have believed, what is (the matter) with you that, when you are told to go forth in the cause of Allah , you adhere heavily to the earth? Are you satisfied with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But what is the enjoyment of worldly life compared to the Hereafter except a very little." (9:38)

The man just walks around reciting this verse a few times. And that's it. That's all it took. Reciting the Quran in Arabic a few times and he has created a mass killer. His "student" suddenly transforms from being a benevolent boy, into a suicide bomber--just by reciting Quran. No political manifesto or ideas. No manipulative brainwashing. Just Quran.

And this is the most poisonous narrative which need to recognize, reject, and speak out against.

Awesome story that takes you on a rollercoaster of mind and emotions
skip-987564 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this story a great deal and love that it tackled how might someone with abilities beyond the norm be percieved in todays society... !st off people are so eager to Follow and not think for themselves..we want a figure, be it religious or political ect to Fix the world and our lives because we dont want to take the responsibility to do it ourselves...Spoilers ahead ,be warned..It became clear early on that the figure himself never claimed to be "the messiah" nor did he try to aquire followers or want cults, christian or otherwise forming around him...the minister had this idea in mind, thought the character knew all the answers, and tried to form a christian cult around him with of course, the minister at its head... the ego in this! it has been going on from time immemorial that the church formed a cult around christ and his teachings and placed its popes at the head ect ect.. This man here, was a rebel..he was not to be anyones puppet..he turned to the crowds at washington dc and said point blank that if you are here for answers you will not find them, if you expect me to give you something you will be dissapointed... he was discouraging followers, and pushing people back upon themselves..any real teacher would do the same thing..so we are left with a scene of a man walking on water before 1,000's of people on camera...Im certain that if the people claiming he was hoaxing it wanted to prove if it was genuine, they could Easily retrace his steps in the pond and see if there was a substructure under there ..yes or no...it could easily be laid to rest whether that was genuine or fake...heck if people really wanted to know, just follow his path in the water! wade on in there after him..either you will sink or you wont but it would end the debate on whether it was hoaxed.. so the story takes you in one direction, then swings in with doubt to discredit the idea and does this back and forth many times..great writing here! and in the end, you see the character predict and tell the israeli guy that he would see the boy he killed as his last thoughts b4 he died and thats exactly what happenned...the very final scene of him being unscathed after the crash and bringing the 2 men back to life was awesome and laid to rest as to whether he had genuine abilities or not.... was he Christ returned? maybe or maybe not..but was he just a fake? no I dont think so after how that ending played out and likely he Did walk on water... there Are extraordinary human beings out there with abilities that are staggering and far beyond even what you see in movies like this..anything is possible! very thought provoking series that Really could take off with another season. thumbs up!

Where is this going?
navidn137812 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The idea is interesting and unique and that's what made me watch it. But there are so many plot holes and weak character developments that do not make sense and leave you confused. The main question is what is this guy's mission/message and is he truly connected to a divine/spiritual source? Why is he so hesitant and vague in his interactions with people? If he has a mission to save the world then why doesn't he express it properly and confuses everyone? Also why would he have such a naive approach to the concept of world peace? America withdrawing all its troops sounded like quite a stupid thing to ask for. Even in reality we know doing such a thing wouldn't result in world peace. World peace would be possible when nations' and leaders' reach such high level of maturity to come and strive together to save the world from its turmoil. We are way far from that level of maturity and still a lot of education needs to be done around this matter.

Great original concept and intriguing storyline. I'm not religious, so I look at this as Sci-fi, but let's just imaging there is a god and a messiah. Is this how the world would react? Is he just a fake? Love the mystery.

Warning: Spoilers
Excellent show that grabs you from the beginning. Compelling character arch's, smart writing, and a message that you'd hope the second coming would bring. However as a Christian the part when the Messiah said to a character that her dead loved ones watch over her, I had a problem with. Bringing current events like the tensions in the Middle East was great and loved that they used middle eastern actors but the immigration crisis in America as a sub plot was very lefty narrative. That's said, it did make you think.

Disappointing
bcorzine14 January 2020
Show reminds me of single-word named network television shows that try to lure you in with an interesting plot, but fail to deliver on the script and cinematography. I found myself watching the next episodes because of the cliffhangers at the end of each episode, but being mostly bored for the majority of the time. Such a waste of potential.
