Here's one of the almost four dozen series of photographs that Eadward Muybridge shot to demonstrate movement in the days before anyone figured out how to string them together and project them. He had done the first one, taken of a galloping horse using an elaborate series of tripwires, to decide a bet between some rich Californians. Afterwards, he got interested in the process and wound up touring with them. Later, they were assembled by other hands into very short movies, like this one.
